Recyclable Elastomers Are Taking Share from Vulcanized Rubber and PVC, Lifting TPE Demand at 5.10% a Year

At USD 29.40 Billion in 2025, the global thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) market is on course for USD 30.90 Billion in 2026 and USD 48.35 Billion by 2035, compounding at 5.10% a year. TPEs behave like rubber in use but process like plastics, so they can be molded in seconds and remelted, which is why vehicle makers, footwear brands and medical device firms keep switching parts to them.

This study covers the six main TPE families: styrenic block copolymers (TPS or SBC), thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO), thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPV), thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), copolyester elastomers (TPC) and polyamide elastomers (TPA), sold as neat polymers or compounds. Values are at producer and compounder selling prices. Thermoset rubbers such as EPDM, NBR and silicone, and rigid engineering thermoplastics, are outside the scope; SBC grades sold into asphalt and adhesives are included.

Automotive remains the anchor buyer. OICA reported 96.4 million vehicles built worldwide in 2025, up 3.9%, and the EU End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation adopted in June 2026 counts thermoplastic elastomers toward its recycled-plastic content targets. That rule favors melt-recyclable TPV and TPO over cured rubber in seals, skins and boots.

Thermoplastic polyurethanes are the fastest-growing type at a 6.20% CAGR, and medical applications are the fastest-growing end use at 6.80%. Bio-based and recycled-content grades grow fastest by source at 9.80%. Africa is the fastest-growing region at 6.00% from a small base. Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for 52.80% of 2025 revenue.

Supply is consolidating: ADNOC's XRG completed its EUR 14.7 billion acquisition of Covestro in November 2025, and HEXPOL has bought several TPE compounders since April 2025, which shapes pricing in the thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) market.

TPU Is the Fastest-Growing Type as Capacity Moves to China

Thermoplastic polyurethanes grow at 6.20%, polyamide elastomers at 5.90% and TPV at 5.75%, while styrenic block copolymers grow at 4.30%. TPU gains from cable jacketing, films, footwear midsoles and medical tubing, and Covestro's Zhuhai site, which began production in January 2026 with about 30 kt a year and a plan for 120 kt, shows where new capacity is going. SBC volumes stay large in asphalt, adhesives and soft-touch compounds, but those uses track construction and packaging cycles, so growth is slower. TPV grows faster than TPO because it replaces EPDM rubber in automotive weatherseals and under-hood parts.

Medical Leads Applications, Footwear Trails

Medical applications grow at 6.80%, wire and cable at 5.60% and automotive at 5.35%. BASF's April 2025 GMP qualification of its Shanghai TPU plant for food-contact and medical tube grades shows how suppliers are certifying sites for regulated uses, and medical TPEs replace PVC in tubing and bags to avoid plasticizers. Footwear grows at 4.20%, since global output was roughly flat at about 24.6 billion pairs in 2025, and adhesives and bitumen modification trail at 4.10%.

Injection Molding Leads Volume, Other Methods Grow Fastest

Injection molding grows at 5.25%, driven by two-shot soft-touch parts and airbag covers, and extrusion at 5.05% for seals, tubing and cable. Other methods, including 3D printing filaments, calendered films and foamed beads, grow at 6.10% as TPU powders and filaments move from prototypes to production parts. Blow molding grows at 4.60%, mainly for CVJ boots and air ducts.

Bio-Based and Recycled-Content Grades Grow at More than Twice the Fossil Rate

Bio-based and recycled-content TPEs grow at 9.80%, against 4.70% for fossil-based grades. Kuraray gained ISCC PLUS certification for SEPTON and HYBRAR made at Kashima in March 2025, and the EU ELV Regulation's recycled-plastic targets give automotive buyers a reason to pay for certified mass-balance and recycled grades.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Large Owners Are Consolidating TPU and Compounding Capacity

ADNOC's investment arm XRG completed its EUR 14.7 billion acquisition of Covestro in November 2025, adding a EUR 1.17 billion capital increase to fund growth. Covestro then started production at its Zhuhai TPU site in January 2026. HEXPOL completed its buyout of almaak international in April 2025, began consolidating Turkish cable compounder Kabkom in May 2025 and acquired 80% of Izmir TPE compounder Symplast, with about EUR 34 million of sales and 135 staff, in October 2026. Larger owners are using scale to supply global automotive and cable customers.

Styrenic Producers Are Raising Prices and Trimming Grades

Kuraray announced price increases for SEPTON, HYBRAR and TU-Polymer in January 2025 and again on April 30, October 3 and December 2, 2025. Kraton announced in October 2025 a plan to stop hydrogenated SBC production at Berre, France and focus that site on unhydrogenated grades, and in February 2026 announced a global increase of USD 330 per metric ton across SBS, SIS and HSBC lines. Producers are protecting margins after weak demand in 2024 and 2025.

New Grades Target Cable, Film and Roofing Uses

Lubrizol previewed ESTANE ZHF 87HP8 TPU for thin halogen-free cables and ESTANE D91T86 aliphatic TPU for films ahead of K 2025 in September 2025. ExxonMobil launched Vistamaxx Tough T1600 in November 2025 for roofing membranes, artificial leather and medical tubing. These launches aim at uses where TPEs replace PVC or cured rubber on recyclability and processing cost.

Certified Sustainable Grades Move into the Mainstream

Kuraray's March 2025 ISCC PLUS certification for its Kashima SEPTON and HYBRAR output, and the inclusion of TPEs in the EU ELV recycled-content calculation confirmed by the Council in June 2026, push sustainability from marketing claims to purchase specifications. Automotive buyers now ask suppliers for mass-balance certificates alongside technical data sheets.

Restraints and Challenges

Weak Demand in Western Automotive and Industrial Markets

According to OICA, Europe built 17.2 million vehicles in 2025, down 0.8%, and the Americas 18.74 million, down 2.1%. HEXPOL reported 2025 group sales of SEK 19,324 million, down from SEK 20,437 million, with organic sales about 4% lower and weaker sales to automotive customers. TPE compounders exposed to these markets face slow volume.

Feedstock Volatility Drives Repeated Price Changes

Kuraray raised SBC prices four times in 2025, and Kraton announced a USD 330 per metric ton increase in February 2026. Styrene, butadiene, isoprene, polyols and MDI prices move with oil and gas costs, so TPE buyers face frequent price resets that complicate annual supply contracts.

Recycled-Content Rules Raise Qualification Costs

The EU End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation, documented by the Council of the EU, requires 15% recycled plastic in new vehicles after 6 years and 25% after 10 years, with 20% of that from end-of-life vehicles. TPEs count toward the target, but supplying recycled-content grades with consistent quality and full traceability requires new sorting, testing and certification investment.

Performance Limits at High Temperature

Most TPEs soften above their service temperature range, which keeps cured EPDM, silicone and fluoroelastomers in the hottest under-hood seals and gaskets. Suppliers must prove long-term compression set and heat aging before vehicle makers will switch, which slows substitution in demanding uses.

Growth Drivers

Automotive Lightweighting and Recyclability Requirements

OICA counted 96.4 million vehicles produced in 2025, up 3.9%, with Asia Pacific building 59.2 million. Each vehicle uses TPEs in weatherseals, glass run channels, airbag covers, CVJ boots, interior skins and cable insulation, and TPV replaces heavier EPDM rubber in many seals. The EU End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation adopted in June 2026 counts TPEs toward recycled-plastic targets of 15% after six years and 25% after ten years, which gives melt-recyclable elastomers a regulatory edge over thermoset rubber. Automotive applications grow at 5.35% in our model, and this driver contributes about +1.3% to the annual growth of the thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) market, the largest single share.

Medical and Hygiene Uses Replacing PVC and Latex

Medical applications grow at 6.80%, the fastest end use. BASF qualified its Shanghai TPU plant under GMP in April 2025 for food-contact and medical tube grades, and ExxonMobil's November 2025 Vistamaxx Tough T1600 targets medical tubing alongside roofing and artificial leather. Hospitals and device makers are moving away from plasticized PVC and natural rubber latex because of plasticizer and allergy concerns, and TPEs offer clarity, softness and sterilization resistance. We estimate this shift adds roughly +0.6 points to the market's 5.10% CAGR, a modest share of volume but a high share of value because medical grades sell at a premium.

Cable, Electronics and Energy Infrastructure

Wire and cable applications grow at 5.60%. Lubrizol's September 2025 ESTANE ZHF 87HP8 TPU for thin halogen-free cables and HEXPOL's May 2025 move into Turkish cable compounding through Kabkom show suppliers targeting EV charging cables, data center wiring and renewable energy cables. TPU and TPC jackets resist abrasion and oil while staying flexible at low temperatures, which suits charging and robotics cables. This driver accounts for about +0.7% of yearly market growth, supported by Covestro's planned expansion to 120 kt of TPU capacity at Zhuhai.

Opportunities

Certified Bio-Based and Recycled-Content Grades

Bio-based and recycled-content TPEs grow at 9.80% a year. Kuraray's ISCC PLUS certification in March 2025 shows the route: mass-balance grades that drop into existing molds. Suppliers that can document recycled content for the EU ELV targets can win automotive and consumer brand contracts at premium prices.

3D Printing and Specialty Processing

Other processing methods, including 3D printing, foamed beads and calendered films, grow at 6.10%. TPU powders and filaments for printed footwear lattices, orthotics and industrial parts give compounders a high-margin outlet beyond injection molding.

Asia Pacific Holds Over Half of TPE Revenue, with Africa the Fastest-Growing Region

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 52.80% of the thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) market in 2025, worth USD 15.52 Billion. APAC revenue grows to USD 27.41 Billion by 2035 at a 5.85% CAGR. The region built 59.2 million vehicles in 2025, more than 61% of world output, and China alone produced 34.53 million. Asia also made about 88% of the world's footwear in 2024. Covestro's Zhuhai TPU site, Kuraray's Kashima plant and producers such as LCY, Asahi Kasei and Sinopec make APAC the main production hub.

North America

North America held an 18.60% share in 2025, equal to USD 5.47 Billion. North American revenue reaches USD 8.33 Billion by 2035, a 4.30% CAGR. European vehicle output fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025, but the EU ELV Regulation's 25% recycled-plastic target after ten years supports TPV and TPO adoption. KRAIBURG TPE, HEXPOL, BASF and Covestro are major suppliers, and Kraton is reshaping its Berre, France site.

Latin America

Latin America held 3.90% of 2025 revenue, about USD 1.15 Billion. Latin American TPE sales rise to USD 1.86 Billion by 2035 at a 4.95% CAGR. Brazil and Mexico are the region's two largest vehicle producers, and Brazil is also among the largest footwear producers outside Asia, which makes automotive seals and shoe soles the main local uses.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 2.40% of 2025 revenue, about USD 0.71 Billion. Middle East demand reaches USD 1.19 Billion by 2035, a 5.40% CAGR. The UAE's XRG, part of ADNOC, completed its EUR 14.7 billion acquisition of Covestro in November 2025, linking Gulf feedstock to TPU production, while construction projects in Saudi Arabia and the UAE use TPE seals, roofing and cable.

Africa

Africa held a 1.60% share in 2025, equal to USD 0.47 Billion. African revenue rises to USD 0.84 Billion by 2035 at a 6.00% CAGR, the fastest of any region. Vehicle assembly in Morocco and South Africa drives automotive TPE use, and growing footwear, cable and consumer goods production in Egypt, Ethiopia and Nigeria adds compound demand.

Chemical Majors Own the Polymers, While Compounders Win on Application Know-How

The thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) market has two layers. Polymer producers make SBC, TPU, TPV and copolyester base resins at large scale, and compounders blend them with oils, fillers and additives into grades for specific parts. Ownership changes at Covestro and acquisitions by HEXPOL are reshaping both layers.

Styrenic Block Copolymer Producers

Kraton, owned by DL Chemical, is the best-known SBC maker and supplies SBS, SIS and hydrogenated grades for adhesives, asphalt and compounds. Kuraray makes SEPTON and HYBRAR hydrogenated styrenic polymers, and its Isoprene segment grew sales 6.4% to JPY 39,944 million in the first half of 2025. Asahi Kasei (Tuftec), LCY Chemical and Sinopec add large SBC capacity in Asia.

TPU, TPC and TPV Producers

Covestro, now owned by ADNOC's XRG, is a leading TPU maker and is building up to 120 kt at Zhuhai. BASF sells Elastollan TPU and Lubrizol sells ESTANE and Pearlbond TPUs for cables, films and adhesives. Celanese owns Santoprene TPV, bought from ExxonMobil for USD 1.15 billion in 2022, with about 40% of global TPV capacity, and Hytrel copolyester elastomers. ExxonMobil remains in the market with Vistamaxx propylene-based elastomers, and Dow supplies ENGAGE and INFUSE polyolefin elastomers. Mitsui Chemicals offers olefinic TPE and TPV grades for automotive parts.

Specialist Compounders

Avient, through its GLS business, offers soft-touch and overmolding TPEs within a Specialty Engineered Materials segment that sold USD 1,231.3 million in 2025. HEXPOL, with 2025 group sales of SEK 19,324 million, has grown TPE compounding through almaak, Kabkom and Symplast. KRAIBURG TPE focuses on automotive, consumer and medical compounds in Europe, Asia and the Americas, and Teknor Apex is known for its Medalist medical TPEs.

How Suppliers Compete

Large producers compete on feedstock integration and capacity, while compounders compete on color matching, adhesion to rigid plastics, regulatory approvals and speed of grade development. Certified sustainable grades are becoming a tender requirement, which favors suppliers that already hold ISCC PLUS or similar certification.
