Sensor-Equipped and Automated Couplings Are Adding Value to a Fifth Wheel Market Tied to Tractor Builds

Global spending on fifth wheel couplings reached USD 1.68 Billion in 2025, by Radial Insights' estimate, and should reach USD 1.75 Billion in 2026 and USD 2.52 Billion by 2035, a 4.12% CAGR, as tractor fleets add sensors and automation.

Fifth wheel couplings are the plate-and-jaw assemblies mounted on a tractor chassis that lock onto a semi-trailer kingpin and carry part of the trailer load. This study covers fixed, sliding and fully oscillating fifth wheels, mounting plates and slide rails sold with them, and sensor or automated coupling systems, supplied to truck makers or sold as replacements. It excludes kingpins sold separately, drawbar and pintle couplings for full trailers, gooseneck hitches for pickups and RV fifth wheel hitches.

Demand follows tractor production, which split sharply in 2025. China's heavy truck sales, which include tractors, rose 26% to about 1.137 million units, while EU truck registrations fell 6.2% to 307,460 and North American Class 8 orders totaled about 224,000. US trailer net orders still rose 5% to 173,144, keeping coupling replacement and fleet upgrades active.

The fastest-growing segment is automated coupling systems at a 10.90% CAGR, ahead of sensor-equipped smart couplings at 8.60%. The fastest-growing region is Africa at 5.10%, while Asia Pacific (APAC) keeps the largest base at 44.20% of 2025 value.

The supplier base consolidated in 2025. In February 2025, JOST closed its USD 398 million purchase of Hyva, and in March 2026, JOST reported 2025 revenue of EUR 1,534.2 million while SAF-HOLLAND reported EUR 1,734.4 million. Those two groups, with Fontaine in North America, set the pace on fifth wheel coupling technology.

Fully Oscillating Fifth Wheels Grow at 4.80% With Off-Road and Heavy Use

Fixed fifth wheels are the largest type by units because most long-haul tractors run a single trailer type, but they grow at only 3.60%. Sliding fifth wheels grow at 4.30% because North American fleets adjust axle weight distribution to meet bridge laws and to fit different trailer lengths. Fully oscillating fifth wheels lead at 4.80% because construction, logging and heavy haul tractors need articulation in two axes on uneven ground.

Couplings Rated Above 30 Tonnes Grow Fastest at 4.90%

Couplings rated up to 20 tonnes grow at 3.50% and serve medium tractors and city distribution. The 20 to 30 tonne class is the mainstream long-haul rating and grows at 4.10%. Couplings above 30 tonnes grow at 4.90%, helped by heavier electric tractors and by mining and project cargo routes in Australia, Africa and the Middle East.

Automated Coupling Systems Grow at 10.90%

Conventional mechanical fifth wheels grow at 3.20%, carried by replacement demand. Sensor-equipped smart couplings grow at 8.60% because they confirm jaw lock and kingpin position and feed telematics, which cuts miscoupling incidents. Fontaine's TechLock uses a jaw height sensor to stop the coupling closing if the kingpin enters at the wrong height. Automated coupling systems, which connect air and electrical lines and release the jaw without the driver leaving the cab, grow at 10.90% as autonomous and yard truck programs need hands-free hookups.

Yard and Terminal Tractors Grow at 6.10%

Long-haul tractors remain the largest application and grow at 4.00%. Regional and vocational tractors grow at 4.20%. Yard and terminal tractors grow at 6.10% because ports and distribution centers couple and uncouple dozens of times per shift, which wears fifth wheels faster and rewards automation. Heavy haul and off-road units grow at 4.70%.

Aftermarket Fifth Wheels Grow at 4.60%, Ahead of OEM at 3.90%

OEM sales track tractor builds and grow at 3.90%. Aftermarket sales grow at 4.60% because jaws, locks and plates wear and must be rebuilt or replaced over a tractor's life, and because SAF-HOLLAND expects stable aftermarket demand from the large vehicle population built in earlier years.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Coupling Suppliers Are Consolidating Into Broader Truck Component Groups

In February 2025, JOST announced that it had closed the purchase of Netherlands-based Hyva for USD 398 million, adding a business with more than 40% of the world market for front-end tipping cylinders. The combined group employs more than 7,500 people in more than 35 countries. Fifth wheel makers are widening their product baskets to sell more content per truck.

Safety Sensing Is Becoming Standard on Premium Couplings

Sensor kits that confirm jaw closure and kingpin height are moving from options to standard fitments on premium tractors. Fontaine showed its TechLock jaw height sensor at IAA Hannover, and JOST offers sensor-equipped fifth wheels that report coupling status to the cab. Fleets value the data because a dropped trailer can destroy a tractor and its cargo.

Driverless Trucks Need Hands-Free Coupling

In May 2025, Aurora Innovation began driverless commercial trucking runs between Dallas and Houston in Texas. Autonomous routes still need trailers to be coupled and uncoupled at hubs, and automated coupling systems that connect air and power lines without a driver are part of the engineering work that driverless freight requires. Hub operators want the coupling to report lock status to the vehicle computer before the truck can move, which turns the fifth wheel into a data point in the safety case.

India Is Becoming a Growth Market for Tractor-Trailers

In October 2025, FADA data showed Indian commercial vehicle retail sales of 463,695 units in the first half of fiscal 2026, up 2%, and in March 2026 SAF-HOLLAND said it expects positive APAC development driven mainly by India. Tractor-trailer combinations are gaining share from rigid trucks on Indian highways, which adds fifth wheel demand.

Restraints and Challenges

Weak North American Tractor and Trailer Builds

FTR reported US trailer production of 11,801 units in December 2025, the lowest since September 2010, and ACT Research put 2025 Class 8 orders at about 224,000. SAF-HOLLAND's 2025 sales fell 7.6% to EUR 1,734.4 million, with weak OE demand particularly in the Americas. OEM fifth wheel orders track these builds month by month.

Regulatory Uncertainty on US Emissions Rules

SAF-HOLLAND noted that North American demand could improve depending on possible changes to EPA 2027 emissions rules and the USMCA renegotiation. Until those are settled, fleets delay tractor purchases, which defers OEM coupling sales.

Steel Costs and Price Pressure

Fifth wheels are made largely of cast and fabricated steel. Steel price swings and tariffs raise input costs, while large truck makers push annual price-downs, which squeezes supplier margins. Lightweight aluminum and forged-steel designs cut tractor weight but cost more, and many price-sensitive buyers in China, India and Africa still choose basic cast units.

Certification and Liability

Couplings must meet UNECE Regulation No. 55 in Europe and many other markets, and product liability exposure after a trailer separation is high. New sensor and automated designs face long validation cycles before truck makers approve them.

Growth Drivers

Tractor Fleet Renewal in Asia and Emerging Markets

China's heavy truck sales rose 26% in 2025 to about 1.137 million units, the highest in four years, helped by scrappage-linked replacement and record exports, and tractor-trailer combinations make up a large part of that fleet. In India, highway logistics is shifting from rigid trucks to tractor-trailers, and SAF-HOLLAND expects India to drive APAC growth in 2026. Chinese tractor makers such as Sinotruk export across Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, taking fifth wheels with them. Every new tractor needs one fifth wheel, and replacement follows over the tractor's life. We estimate fleet renewal in Asia and emerging markets adds about +1.4% of annual growth to the fifth wheel couplings market through 2035.

Safety Sensing and Automation Content Per Coupling

A sensor-equipped or automated fifth wheel sells for several times the price of a basic mechanical unit. Fontaine's TechLock prevents the jaw from closing when the kingpin is at the wrong height, JOST offers sensor packages that report lock status to the cab, and automated systems connect air and electrical lines without the driver leaving the cab. Autonomous truck operators, including Aurora Innovation, which began driverless commercial runs in Texas in May 2025, need couplings that report their status to the vehicle computer. Sensor-equipped smart couplings grow at 8.60% a year and automated systems at 10.90%, and together we credit them with roughly 1.0 percentage point of the market's 4.12% CAGR.

Heavier Loads and Electric Tractors

Battery electric tractors weigh more than diesel units, and the EU's revised weights and dimensions framework allows extra weight for zero-emission trucks. Electrically chargeable trucks reached 4.2% of EU truck registrations in 2025, up from 2.3% in 2024, and Daimler Truck, Volvo Group and Traton are expanding electric tractor lines. Heavier gross combination weights push buyers toward higher-rated couplings and stronger mounting plates, lifting the above-30-tonne class to a 4.90% CAGR. This load shift contributes about +0.5% a year to market growth.

Opportunities

Yard Automation at Ports and Distribution Centers

Yard and terminal tractors grow at 6.10% a year. Suppliers that offer automated coupling for electric yard trucks can sell into ports and large distribution centers that run many coupling cycles per shift.

Aftermarket Rebuild and Retrofit Programs

The aftermarket grows at 4.60% a year. Rebuild kits, sensor retrofits and slide rail upgrades let suppliers earn revenue from the installed fleet even when new tractor orders are weak, as SAF-HOLLAND's stable aftermarket outlook for 2026 shows.

Asia Pacific Leads Fifth Wheel Coupling Demand and Africa Grows Fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held 44.20% of 2025 fifth wheel couplings value, about USD 0.74 Billion, and is forecast to reach USD 1.20 Billion by 2035 at a 4.90% CAGR. China's heavy truck sales rose 26% to about 1.137 million in 2025. India's shift toward tractor-trailers on national highways adds a second growth engine.

North America

North America accounted for 23.80% of 2025 value, or USD 0.40 Billion, rising to USD 0.54 Billion by 2035 at 3.10% a year. Class 8 orders totaled about 224,000 in 2025 and US trailer net orders reached 173,144. Sliding fifth wheels are common because fleets adjust axle loads for bridge formula rules.

Europe

Europe represented 22.10% of the 2025 market, about USD 0.37 Billion, and is forecast at USD 0.52 Billion in 2035, a 3.40% CAGR. EU truck registrations fell 6.2% to 307,460 in 2025, but SAF-HOLLAND expects a positive trend in trailers and heavy trucks there in 2026. JOST and SAF-HOLLAND are both headquartered in Germany.

Latin America

Latin America held 5.40% of 2025 value, about USD 0.09 Billion, and is expected to reach USD 0.14 Billion by 2035 at 4.20% a year. Brazil's agribusiness freight relies on long tractor-trailer and bitrem combinations, which need heavy-duty couplings.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 2.90% of 2025 value, roughly USD 0.05 Billion, growing to USD 0.08 Billion by 2035 at a 4.60% CAGR. Saudi Arabia's construction programs and Gulf port expansions support heavy haul and yard tractor demand.

Africa

Africa held 1.60% of 2025 value, or USD 0.03 Billion, and is forecast to reach USD 0.04 Billion by 2035, the fastest-growing regional rate at 5.10%. Mining corridors in Zambia and the DRC, and imports of Chinese tractors, lift demand for heavy-rated fifth wheels.

Two German Groups and One US Specialist Set the Standard in Fifth Wheel Couplings

The fifth wheel couplings market is concentrated. A small number of suppliers hold the approvals, casting capacity and service networks that truck makers require, and each truck maker typically releases only two or three coupling brands. Competition turns on weight, durability, ease of maintenance, sensor features and aftermarket parts availability.

Global Leaders

JOST Werke describes itself as the leading global producer of fifth wheel couplings and sells under the JOST and Rockinger brands. Its 2025 revenue rose to EUR 1,534.2 million after the Hyva deal, with organic growth of 1.7% and an adjusted EBIT margin of 9.5%. SAF-HOLLAND sells fifth wheels under the Holland and SAF brands alongside axles and suspensions, and reported 2025 sales of EUR 1,734.4 million. Its Indian business, York Transport Equipment, gives it a base in a fast-growing tractor-trailer market.

North American Specialists

Fontaine Fifth Wheel, part of Marmon Holdings under Berkshire Hathaway, is a major North American supplier. Its 260HD heavy-duty fifth wheel is tested to a 36-tonne imposed load and a 260kN D-value under ECE R55-02, and its TechLock sensor targets miscoupling.

Coupling and Component Specialists

VBG Group's Ringfeder brand is a long-established maker of drawbar couplings for truck-and-trailer combinations, which compete with tractor-semitrailer setups in Scandinavia and Central Europe. Scharmüller in Austria makes ball-head and drawbar couplings for agricultural and heavy haul combinations. Hyva, now part of JOST, adds hydraulic tipping systems that share tipper and construction customers with fifth wheels, which lets JOST bundle a coupling, landing gear and tipping cylinder into one offer to body builders and truck makers.

Truck Makers as Buyers

Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, PACCAR, Traton and Sinotruk decide which couplings are factory-fitted. Their electric and autonomous tractor programs set requirements for sensor outputs and automated connections, so supplier engineering roadmaps follow OEM platform timing.
