Aluminum and Electric-Truck Fitments Are Lifting Commercial Vehicle Wheel Value Faster Than Truck Output

Radial Insights sizes the global commercial vehicle wheels market at USD 6.42 Billion for 2025, rising to USD 6.70 Billion in 2026 and USD 9.84 Billion by 2035 at a 4.36% CAGR, as fleets trade steel for lighter aluminum.

The study covers disc wheels fitted to trucks above 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, buses and coaches, and trailers and semi-trailers, sold both to vehicle makers and as replacements. It includes steel, forged aluminum, cast and flow-formed aluminum and emerging composite or hybrid wheels. It excludes light commercial van wheels, off-highway and mining wheels, aircraft wheels, hubs, bearings and fasteners, which Radial Insights covers in separate reports.

Truck output was mixed in 2025. China sold about 1.137 million heavy trucks, up 26% and the highest level in four years, while EU truck registrations fell 6.2% to 307,460 units and North American Class 8 orders totaled only about 224,000. Wheel value held up better than units because aluminum pass-through raised prices and fleets kept specifying lighter wheels.

The fastest-growing segment is battery electric and fuel cell trucks at a 14.60% CAGR, because heavier battery packs make every kilogram saved at the wheel worth more payload. The fastest-growing region is Africa at 5.20%, from a small base, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds the largest share at 46.80% of 2025 value.

Supply structure changed sharply in 2025. In February 2025, Accuride Wheels Europe and Asia filed for insolvency in Germany, and in November 2025, Maxion Wheels announced a 350,000 wheel per year forged aluminum truck wheel plant in Manisa, Turkey. Those moves shift capacity from older steel plants toward aluminum near growing truck markets.

Forged Aluminum Wheels Grow at 5.90% as Fleets Chase Payload

Steel wheels still ship in the largest numbers because they cost less and dominate China, India and most trailer fleets, but they grow at only 3.40% a year. Forged aluminum wheels grow at 5.90% because a 24.5 inch Alcoa LvL ONE wheel weighs about 30 lbs less than a steel equivalent and saves about 540 lbs on an 18-wheel rig. Cast and flow-formed aluminum grows at 5.20% in buses and medium trucks. Composite and hybrid wheels grow at 7.40% from a tiny base as OEMs test carbon and aluminum-composite designs.

Buses and Coaches Grow at 4.90%, Ahead of Heavy Trucks

Heavy-duty trucks remain the largest vehicle group and grow at 4.30%. Medium-duty trucks grow at 4.10%, held back by weak North American freight demand. Buses and coaches grow at 4.90% as EU bus registrations rose 7.5% in 2025 to 38,238 units and city fleets electrify. Trailers and semi-trailers grow at 4.50%, as each trailer carries eight to twelve wheels.

Wide-Base Single Wheels Grow at 6.20% on Fuel Savings

The 22.5 inch size is the global standard and grows at 4.40%. The 17.5 and 19.5 inch sizes grow at 4.20% with medium trucks and low-floor buses. The 24.5 inch size grows at 3.30% because it is a North American specialty. Wide-base single wheels, which replace dual assemblies on drive and trailer axles, grow at 6.20% as fleets seek lower rolling resistance and weight.

Aftermarket Wheels Grow Faster Than OEM Fitments at 4.80%

OEM wheels grow at 4.10% and track truck build cycles, which swung sharply in 2025. Aftermarket wheels grow at 4.80% because fleets replace damaged and corroded wheels and upgrade from steel to aluminum during refurbishment, and because the large installed fleet keeps replacement demand steady when new truck orders fall.

Battery Electric and Fuel Cell Trucks Grow at 14.60%

Diesel and gas trucks grow at 2.90% as their share of new sales declines. Battery electric and fuel cell trucks grow at 14.60%, with electrically chargeable trucks reaching a 4.2% share of EU registrations in 2025, up from 2.3% in 2024. Their higher axle loads and payload penalties favor high-strength aluminum wheels.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Wheel Capacity Is Moving Toward Aluminum and Lower-Cost Regions

In November 2025, Maxion Wheels announced serial production of forged aluminum truck wheels from January 2026 at a 24,500 square meter plant in Manisa, Turkey, built with Inci Holding and sized at about 350,000 wheels a year. New forged capacity outside the traditional US and Hungarian centers gives European truck and trailer makers a closer source.

Restructuring Is Reshaping Steel Wheel Supply

In February 2025, Accuride Wheels Europe and Asia filed for insolvency in Germany, and by May 2025 the US parent had completed a Chapter 11 restructuring that removed more than USD 400 million of funded debt and refocused it on North American wheels. In September 2025, customers were told the European business would trade as Kronprinz after a sale to strategic investors. The episode shows how thin steel wheel margins have become.

Aluminum Pass-Through Supports Value as Volumes Fall

In February 2026, Howmet Aerospace reported fourth quarter 2025 Forged Wheels revenue of USD 264 million, up 9%, even though commercial transportation volumes fell 10%, because aluminum cost pass-through lifted prices. Full-year segment revenue held at about USD 1.0 billion with adjusted EBITDA of USD 296 million.

Regional Truck Cycles Are Diverging

In January 2026, preliminary data showed China's 2025 heavy truck sales up 26% to about 1.137 million, while ACEA reported EU truck registrations down 6.2% and ACT Research put North American Class 8 orders at about 224,000. Wheel makers with plants in several regions are using that spread to keep utilization steady.

Restraints and Challenges

North American Freight Weakness

Weak freight rates and tariff uncertainty cut US Class 8 and trailer demand in 2025, and FTR reported US trailer production of 11,801 units in December 2025, the lowest since September 2010. OEM wheel orders follow those builds closely, and the December 2025 trailer backlog of 84,501 units was down 21% year on year, which points to a soft first half of 2026 for North American wheel shipments.

Aluminum Price Swings and Tariffs

Aluminum prices and US Section 232 tariffs on aluminum raise and destabilize input costs. Pass-through clauses protect large suppliers, but smaller wheel makers absorb timing gaps of one to three months that erode margin, and trailer builders sometimes switch back to steel when the aluminum premium widens.

Thin Margins in Steel Wheels

Accuride's 2025 restructuring and the insolvency of its German plants show how energy costs, steel prices and low-cost imports squeeze steel wheel producers. Capacity exits can cause short supply gaps for trailer builders, which typically qualify only one or two wheel sources per platform and need several months to approve a new one.

Uneven Electric Truck Adoption

The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association reported a 4.2% electric share of EU truck registrations in 2025, still far below what CO2 targets need. Slower electric adoption would delay the lightweight wheel upgrade cycle.

Growth Drivers

Payload and Fuel Economy Pressure on Fleets

Every kilogram removed from a tractor-trailer can be carried as freight or saved as fuel. Alcoa's 24.5 inch LvL ONE wheel is rated at 7,850 lbs, 450 lbs more than steel alternatives, while weighing about 30 lbs less, and an 18-wheel rig fitted with it saves roughly 540 lbs. US Phase 2 greenhouse gas rules and EU CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles both reward weight reduction, and fleet buyers such as large less-than-truckload carriers specify aluminum across tractors and trailers to meet their own fuel targets. Howmet's Forged Wheels business held about USD 1.0 billion of revenue in 2025 despite 13% lower commercial transportation volumes, which shows how sticky aluminum demand has become. We estimate the lightweighting shift adds about +1.1% of annual growth to commercial vehicle wheel value through 2035.

Electric and Fuel Cell Truck and Bus Adoption

Battery packs add several tonnes to a heavy truck, which raises axle loads and makes wheel weight more valuable. Electrically chargeable trucks took 4.2% of EU truck registrations in 2025, up from 2.3% in 2024, and EU bus registrations rose 7.5% to 38,238 units as city operators buy electric buses. The EU weights and dimensions revision allows extra weight for zero-emission trucks, and makers such as Daimler Truck, Volvo Group and BYD are scaling electric models. Battery electric and fuel cell fitments are the fastest-growing segment at 14.60% a year, and we credit this driver with roughly 0.9 percentage points of the market's 4.36% CAGR.

Asian Truck Production Growth

China's heavy truck sales reached about 1.137 million in 2025, up 26%, supported by vehicle replacement subsidies and record exports. India's commercial vehicle retail sales reached 463,695 units in the first half of fiscal 2026, up 2%, according to FADA, and infrastructure spending keeps tipper and tractor-trailer demand firm. Local wheel makers such as Wheels India and Steel Strips Wheels are adding capacity, and global suppliers are localizing aluminum lines in the region. Asian truck volume contributes about +0.7% to yearly market growth, concentrated in steel and cast aluminum wheels.

Opportunities

Wide-Base Single Wheels for Long-Haul Fleets

Wide-base single wheels grow at 6.20% a year. Suppliers that pair them with matched tire programs from tire makers can win fleet conversions in North America and Europe where fuel savings justify the switch.

Aftermarket Steel-to-Aluminum Upgrades

The aftermarket grows at 4.80% a year. Distributors and wheel makers that offer refurbished-fleet upgrade packages, including corrosion-resistant finishes, can capture value even when new truck builds are weak.

Asia Pacific Holds Nearly Half of Commercial Vehicle Wheel Value While Africa Grows Fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held 46.80% of 2025 commercial vehicle wheels value, about USD 3.00 Billion, and is forecast to reach USD 4.88 Billion by 2035 at a 4.98% CAGR. China's heavy truck sales rose 26% in 2025 to about 1.137 million units. The region still relies mostly on steel wheels, so aluminum conversion adds value on top of volume.

North America

North America accounted for 21.40% of 2025 value, or USD 1.37 Billion, rising to USD 1.93 Billion by 2035 at 3.45% a year. Class 8 orders totaled about 224,000 in 2025 and US trailer net orders reached 173,144, up 5%. North American fleets use aluminum wheels far more than any other region.

Europe

Europe represented 20.60% of the 2025 market, about USD 1.32 Billion, and is forecast at USD 1.90 Billion in 2035, a 3.70% CAGR. EU truck registrations fell 6.2% to 307,460 in 2025 while bus registrations rose 7.5%. Hungary hosts Alcoa forged wheel capacity and Turkey now hosts Maxion's new forged plant.

Latin America

Latin America held 6.10% of 2025 value, about USD 0.39 Billion, and is expected to reach USD 0.60 Billion by 2035 at 4.40% a year. Brazil is the regional truck hub, and Maxion Wheels, part of Brazil's Iochpe-Maxion, supplies steel and aluminum wheels from local plants.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 3.20% of 2025 value, roughly USD 0.21 Billion, growing to USD 0.33 Billion by 2035 at a 4.80% CAGR. Saudi Arabia's construction and logistics projects support tipper, tanker and trailer demand, and high temperatures favor durable steel and aluminum finishes.

Africa

Africa held 1.90% of 2025 value, or USD 0.12 Billion, and is forecast to reach USD 0.20 Billion by 2035, the fastest-growing regional rate at 5.20%. South Africa assembles trucks and trailers, and mining corridors in Zambia and the DRC keep heavy haul demand rising.

A Handful of Global Wheel Makers Compete With Strong Regional Steel Specialists

The commercial vehicle wheels market combines a concentrated forged aluminum tier and a fragmented steel tier. Forged aluminum requires heavy presses, metallurgy know-how and finishing technology, which limits the number of credible suppliers. Steel wheels are produced by many regional players close to truck and trailer plants, and competition there is mainly on price and delivery.

Global Aluminum Leaders

Howmet Aerospace, through its Alcoa Wheels brand, is the best-known forged aluminum truck wheel supplier, with about USD 1.0 billion of 2025 Forged Wheels revenue and plants in the United States and Hungary. Its Dura-Bright surface treatment and LvL ONE lightweight wheel are widely specified by North American fleets. Maxion Wheels, part of Iochpe-Maxion, makes both steel and aluminum wheels on several continents and added forged capacity in Turkey.

Steel Wheel Specialists

Accuride, after its 2025 restructuring, focuses on North American steel and aluminum wheels. Kronprinz, the former Accuride European business, supplies steel truck and trailer wheels from Germany. Gianetti Ruote in Italy, sold by Accuride, makes steel wheels for trucks and agricultural vehicles. Topy Industries in Japan supplies steel wheels to Japanese and Asian truck makers.

Asian Volume Producers

Wheels India and Steel Strips Wheels lead the Indian market for truck and bus wheels and export to Europe and North America. Zhengxing Wheel Group is a large Chinese steel truck wheel maker. These producers compete on cost and benefit from rising local truck output.

Adjacent and Off-Highway Players

Titan International supplies wheels and tires mainly for agricultural, construction and off-highway equipment, a field outside this report's scope that still competes with on-road products for steel wheel capacity and engineering talent. Truck makers such as Daimler Truck, Volvo Group and PACCAR set wheel specifications, run approval testing and award multi-year supply contracts, which gives them strong buying power. Their electric truck programs, including the Mercedes-Benz eActros and Volvo FH Electric, are now the main route for new wheel designs to reach volume production.
