Lightweighting in heavy trucks and premium EVs lifts forged aluminum wheel demand to USD 8.21 Billion by 2035

Radial Insights sizes the global Forged Aluminum Wheels market at USD 4.85 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 5.11 Billion in 2026 and USD 8.21 Billion by 2035 at a 5.40% CAGR. Growth comes from fleets chasing payload and fuel savings, and from carmakers fitting larger, lighter rims on battery electric vehicles.

The study covers wheels made by hot or warm forging of aluminum alloy billet (mostly 6061 and proprietary 6xxx grades), followed by machining, flow finishing and surface treatment. It includes one-piece monoblock wheels and multi-piece wheels whose centers are forged, sold to vehicle makers and into the replacement and upgrade aftermarket. Cast aluminum wheels, flow-formed cast wheels, steel wheels, magnesium and carbon fiber wheels, and aircraft wheels sit outside the scope, as do tires and tire pressure sensors fitted to the rim.

Commercial vehicles remain the anchor. Howmet Aerospace, which sells under the Alcoa Wheels brand, states that its aluminum wheels can save up to 59% of wheel weight per tractor-trailer versus standard steel. Each kilogram removed converts into payload for bulk haulers or range for battery electric trucks, which is why heavy-duty trucks and tractors still account for the largest revenue pool in the forged aluminum wheels market.

The fastest wheel diameter class is 19 to 21 Inch, expanding at 6.40% a year as premium SUVs and electric sedans move up in rim size while needing low unsprung mass. By region, Asia Pacific (APAC) grows fastest at 6.30%, supported by Chinese forging capacity, India's truck build and export flows into Europe and North America.

Supply is concentrated. Howmet, Accuride, Maxion Wheels, Ronal, BBS and a group of Chinese forgers such as CITIC Dicastal hold most of the installed press capacity, and new entrants face a high entry ticket: Maxion's Manisa plant in Turkey alone represents about USD 150 million of investment since 2021 across aluminum and steel lines.

Passenger Cars and SUVs grow fastest by vehicle type at 5.90%, while trucks keep the largest base

Heavy-Duty Trucks and Tractors remain the leading vehicle type because fleets in North America and Europe already specify aluminum on most new Class 8 tractors, and replacement cycles of eight to ten years keep volumes steady. The segment grows at 5.10%, held back by the 2025 freight downturn: Howmet reported commercial transportation volumes 16% lower in Q3 2025. Passenger Cars and SUVs expand at 5.90% because premium electric models from Chinese, German and US makers increasingly specify forged rims to offset battery weight. Buses and Coaches grow at 5.70% as electric city buses push axle loads close to legal limits. Trailers trail at 4.60% because many trailer fleets still buy steel on price, and Motorcycles and Powersports grow at 4.90%.

Monoblock construction leads and grows at 5.60%

Monoblock wheels dominate because every forged truck wheel and most OEM passenger fitments are one piece, which is cheaper to machine and easier to certify. Two-Piece wheels grow at 4.40% and Three-Piece wheels at 3.70%, both tied to the custom and motorsport aftermarket where buyers pay for size flexibility but volumes are small.

19 to 21 Inch rims are the fastest diameter class at 6.40%

Rim sizes of 19 to 21 inches are now standard on many electric SUVs, and the weight penalty of casting such large rims pushes engineers toward forging. The 22.5 Inch and Above class, which covers truck, trailer and bus wheels, grows at 5.20%. Wheels Up to 18 Inch grow at 4.30%, the slowest, because cast wheels already serve that size band well at a lower price.

OEM channel grows at 5.70%, ahead of the aftermarket

The OEM channel leads because truck makers and premium car brands specify forged aluminum at the factory and lock in multi-year supply deals. The Aftermarket grows at 4.80%, supported by fleets switching steel to aluminum at tire change and by enthusiasts buying lighter upgrade wheels, a channel that Ronal entered with its first forged wheel in February 2025.

Coated and Painted finishes expand at 6.10%

Polished wheels lead the truck market by installed base, yet grow at only 4.50% because fleets want lower upkeep. Coated and Painted finishes grow at 6.10% on demand for black and bronze looks plus corrosion protection, as seen in Alcoa's Dura-Black line. Machined finishes grow at 5.30%.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

New forging capacity is moving closer to European truck makers

Maxion Wheels presented forged aluminum truck wheels at transport logistic in Munich in June 2025 and confirmed at SOLUTRANS in Lyon in November 2025 that serial production in Manisa, Turkey would start in January 2026. The 24,500 square meter plant has an initial installed capacity of about 350,000 forged truck wheels a year, built with partner Inci Holding, and uses a 10,000 tonne press in its forging line. Capacity could roughly double with extra flow forming, machining and polishing lines. A second large source of forged wheels within trucking distance of European assembly plants will shorten lead times and add price competition for importers.

Aluminum cost pass-through is shaping revenue more than unit volume

Through 2025 and early 2026, forged wheel revenue tracked aluminum prices as much as demand. Howmet's Forged Wheels revenue was USD 247 million in Q3 2025, up slightly year over year even though volumes fell 16%, because higher aluminum costs were passed to customers. In Q2 2026 revenue climbed 14% to USD 316 million while volumes were still 8% lower, again lifted by metal pass-through. For buyers, this means contract indexation to aluminum benchmarks now matters as much as the base wheel price.

Forged wheels are entering the passenger car aftermarket at scale

Ronal launched its first aftermarket forged wheel, the RF1 FORGED in a 9.0x20 inch size, in February 2025, made from high-strength 6061 alloy with 8.5x20 and 10.0x20 sizes to follow. Established forged brands such as BBS and Vossen already serve this channel, and the entry of a volume cast wheel maker signals that forged products are moving from niche tuning shops to mainstream wheel retail.

Commercial vehicle demand is turning upward after the 2025 trough

Howmet's CEO stated in August 2026 that the commercial transportation market had begun to recover, with second quarter volumes up 7% from the first quarter. Truck makers in North America cut production through 2025 as freight rates stayed weak, so the forged aluminum wheels market enters 2026 with low inventories and pent-up fleet replacement demand.

Restraints and Challenges

Price premium over steel and cast wheels

A forged aluminum truck wheel carries a clear price premium over a steel wheel, and forged passenger rims cost more than cast ones. Small fleets and trailer operators often cannot justify the payback, which keeps trailers growing at only 4.60% a year.

Aluminum price and tariff volatility

Metal is the largest cost item, and trade measures add to swings. Howmet's annual report on Form 10-K for fiscal 2025 notes that aluminum wheel suppliers from China, Taiwan, India, South Korea and Turkey are trying to enter its markets, and that demand depends on fleet age, fuel prices, regulation and trade agreements. Tariff changes on aluminum imports into the United States during 2025 made landed costs harder to forecast for importers.

High capital intensity and long qualification

Forging lines need very large presses, such as the 10,000 tonne unit in Maxion's line, heat treatment, CNC machining and fatigue test rigs. Maxion's Manisa site absorbed about USD 150 million of investment since 2021, and OEM approval of a new wheel requires lengthy rotary and radial fatigue testing.

Cyclical truck demand

Commercial transportation made up about 15% of Howmet's total revenue in 2025, down from 17% in 2024 and 21% in 2023, showing how fast truck build swings can move wheel volumes. A weak freight year can cut forged wheel unit demand by double digits.

Growth Drivers

Payload and fuel savings in heavy trucking

Weight is money in trucking. Howmet says its aluminum wheels deliver up to 59% wheel weight savings per tractor-trailer versus standard steel, which on an 18 wheel combination frees meaningful weight for cargo. Bulk haulers of fuel, cement, grain and milk count every kilogram because their loads hit weight limits before volume limits. Fleet operators in the United States such as large dedicated carriers often specify aluminum on all new tractors, and Accuride, Alcoa Wheels and Maxion all promote lighter forged designs to win those orders. Lower rotating mass also trims tire wear and fuel burn slightly. We estimate that payload economics alone contribute about +1.3% of annual growth to the forged aluminum wheels market over the forecast, the single largest driver.

Battery electric trucks, buses and cars need lighter wheels

Electric powertrains add mass. Battery packs add substantial mass to electric tractors, and electric city buses push axle loads close to legal limits, so every component is re-examined for weight. Forged aluminum wheels are one of the simplest swaps because they bolt on without redesign. On the passenger side, premium electric SUVs from brands such as Porsche, BMW, Tesla and a growing list of Chinese makers fit 20 and 21 inch rims, where forging gives the strength to keep the rim light. Cooper Standard and other suppliers report that most of their new awards now come from battery electric and hybrid programs, a pattern seen across chassis parts. This shift adds roughly 1.1 percentage points to the market's yearly expansion and is the main reason the 19 to 21 Inch class grows at 6.40%.

New regional capacity and aftermarket conversion

Capacity additions make forged wheels easier to buy. Maxion's Manisa plant adds about 350,000 forged truck wheels a year from January 2026, and the company plans to sell first to aftermarket vendors before OEM approvals follow. Accuride runs forged aluminum wheel lines in Camden, South Carolina, and Chinese forgers keep adding presses for export. More local supply cuts lead times from months to weeks and gives fleets the option to convert steel to aluminum at tire change rather than only at truck purchase. Ronal's February 2025 entry into forged aftermarket wheels shows the same pull on the car side. We attribute close to +0.8% of annual CAGR to this wider availability through 2035.

Opportunities

Recycled and low-carbon aluminum wheels

Truck makers and car brands are setting Scope 3 targets, and wheels made from high recycled content billet or low-carbon smelted aluminum can command a premium. Suppliers that certify carbon intensity per wheel can win OEM sourcing points as carmakers prepare for stricter recycled content rules in Europe.

Wheel-end integration for electric axles

E-axles and in-wheel braking designs need wheels engineered with the hub and brake package. Forgers that co-develop wheel-end modules with axle suppliers can move from commodity supply to engineered parts with longer contracts.

Asia Pacific (APAC) leads on share and growth, while North America stays the largest truck wheel market

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 38.20% share of the forged aluminum wheels market, worth USD 1.85 Billion in 2025. The APAC market is set to reach USD 3.41 Billion by 2035 at a 6.30% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China leads on both domestic premium EV fitments and export forging, Japan supplies high-end passenger wheels, and India's growing truck and bus build is starting to specify aluminum on long-haul tractors.

North America

North America accounts for a 27.40% share, or USD 1.33 Billion in 2025. Revenue in North America is forecast at USD 2.10 Billion by 2035, a 4.70% CAGR. US fleets are among the heaviest users of aluminum wheels on Class 8 tractors, served by Howmet plants in Barberton, Ohio and Monterrey, Mexico and by Accuride in South Carolina, and the region's growth depends heavily on the truck cycle that bottomed in 2025.

Europe

Europe represents a 22.60% share of the market, valued at USD 1.10 Billion in 2025. The European market is expected to reach USD 1.72 Billion by 2035, growing at 4.60% a year. Germany and Switzerland host premium forged car wheel brands such as BBS and Ronal, while Howmet forges in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, and Maxion's new Turkish plant adds supply for European truck and trailer builders.

Latin America

Latin America holds a 5.30% share, worth USD 0.26 Billion in 2025. The Latin American market is forecast at USD 0.43 Billion by 2035, a 5.20% CAGR. Brazil drives demand through its large heavy truck and bus fleet, and Mexico benefits from cross-border trucking fleets that already run aluminum wheels.

Middle East

The Middle East has a 4.10% share, or USD 0.20 Billion in 2025. Demand in the Middle East is projected at USD 0.35 Billion by 2035, growing at 5.90% a year. Premium SUV sales in the Gulf states and fuel tanker fleets in Saudi Arabia support forged wheel uptake.

Africa

Africa accounts for a 2.40% share, worth USD 0.12 Billion in 2025. The African market is forecast to reach USD 0.20 Billion by 2035 at a 5.60% CAGR. South Africa's mining haulage and long-distance freight corridors are the main users of aluminum truck wheels on the continent.

Five suppliers control most forged truck wheel capacity, while passenger forged wheels stay fragmented

The forged aluminum wheels market splits into two very different arenas. Truck, trailer and bus wheels are a scale business dominated by a handful of forgers with large presses and OEM approvals. Passenger and performance wheels are more fragmented, with premium brands, Chinese contract forgers and boutique makers competing on design, weight and lead time.

Commercial vehicle wheel leaders

Howmet Aerospace, through its Alcoa Wheels brand, is the global reference in forged truck wheels, known for its MagnaForce alloy, Dura-Bright surface treatment and Dura-Black finish, with machining and forging sites in Ohio, Mexico, Hungary, Japan and China. Accuride Corporation is its main North American rival, producing forged aluminum wheels in Camden, South Carolina, alongside steel wheels. Maxion Wheels, the world's largest wheel maker by units, added forging with its Manisa plant in 2026 and sells across Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Premium passenger and motorsport brands

BBS is known for multi-piece and monoblock forged wheels used in motorsport and as OEM fitment on German performance cars. Ronal Group, a leading cast wheel supplier, entered forged aftermarket wheels in 2025. Vossen, HRE Performance Wheels and Rotiform serve the custom segment with forged monoblock and multi-piece designs, often built to order. Otto Fuchs in Germany supplies forged wheels to Porsche and other premium brands.

Asian volume forgers

CITIC Dicastal, the largest Chinese wheel group, supplies forged and cast wheels to global carmakers and to truck makers through Dicastal North America, which Howmet names as a competitor. Japanese maker Washi Beam and Taiwanese and Korean forgers serve export markets, and Wheels India is listed by Howmet as another competitor in commercial wheels.

How suppliers compete

Truck wheel suppliers compete on weight per wheel, fatigue life, corrosion protection and dealer support, and they increasingly win on aluminum pass-through terms. Passenger forgers compete on design freedom, rim size and turnaround time. New capacity in Turkey and China is likely to pressure prices in Europe, while US tariffs shape import competition in North America.

Primary Interview Insights

Fleet buyers

What triggers a switch from steel to forged aluminum wheels?

Fleet maintenance managers told us payload is the deciding factor for tanker and bulk fleets. Most said the switch happens at new truck purchase, but a growing share now converts at tire replacement when lead times are short.

OEM purchasing

How do truck makers handle aluminum price swings?

Purchasing staff at truck OEMs said nearly all forged wheel contracts are now indexed to aluminum benchmarks quarterly. They described 2025 as a year where wheel prices rose even as volumes fell.

Passenger car engineering

Why forge rather than cast larger rims?

Chassis engineers said that above 20 inches a cast wheel needs extra material to pass impact tests. Forging lets them meet the same tests with a lighter rim, which matters for EV range.

Aftermarket distributors

Is demand for forged upgrade wheels growing?

Wheel distributors in Europe and the US reported more requests for forged monoblock sizes from 19 to 22 inches. They noted that new entrants from cast wheel brands are widening the price range buyers can choose from.

Suppliers

What limits new forging capacity?

Forging plant managers said press availability and OEM fatigue test approval are the biggest hurdles. They expect new plants in Turkey and Asia to take one to two years to reach full OEM qualification.
