Air disc brakes and electric compressors lift a mature air brake market to USD 11.63 Billion by 2035
At USD 7.42 Billion in 2025, the global commercial vehicle air brake systems market is forecast to grow to USD 7.76 Billion in 2026 and USD 11.63 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 4.60%.
Radial Insights defines the Commercial Vehicle Air Brake Systems market as factory and replacement revenue from compressed-air braking used on heavy and medium trucks, buses, coaches and trailers. Scope covers air compressors (engine-driven and electric), air dryers and air processing units, foot, relay and parking valves, ABS and EBS modulators and control units, brake chambers and spring brake actuators, and air-actuated foundation brakes, both disc and drum. We exclude hydraulic brakes on light commercial vehicles, friction linings sold separately, retarders and engine brakes, and rail air brakes, which Radial Insights tracks elsewhere.
Truck cycles shape the Commercial Vehicle Air Brake Systems market from year to year. In 2025 EU truck registrations fell 6.2% while China's heavy truck sales rose 26% and India posted record commercial vehicle sales. Over the decade, value per vehicle rises as fleets move from drum to disc brakes, as safety rules mandate emergency braking and electronic stability, and as electric trucks replace engine-driven compressors with electric ones.
Battery electric vehicles are the fastest-growing propulsion segment at 19.80% a year, and air disc brakes outpace drum brakes at 7.30% against 1.60%. Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest region and the fastest-growing one, at 5.50% a year.
Knorr-Bremse, ZF Commercial Vehicle Solutions, Cummins Meritor and SAF-Holland's Haldex hold most of the market. They compete on electronics and on aftermarket coverage as much as on hardware.

Electronic brake systems lead component growth
Electronic brake systems, including ABS and EBS modulators and control units, grow at 6.60%, the fastest of any component. Emergency braking and stability rules in Europe, India and China need electronic control of each axle, and trailers are moving from basic ABS to EBS. Air dryers and air processing units grow at 5.20% because electric trucks combine drying, pressure control and compressor management in one unit. Air compressors grow at 4.90%, helped by electric scroll compressors such as ZF's e-comp. Valves and modulators grow at 4.10%, and brake chambers and actuators grow at 3.80%, close to vehicle volume.
Disc brakes replace drums
Air disc brakes grow at 7.30% a year, while air drum brakes grow at just 1.60%. Disc brakes stop shorter, fade less and are easier to service, and Cummins has cited 60% market penetration for air disc brakes. Europe already uses disc brakes on almost all new trucks. Growth now comes from North America, China and India. Drum brakes remain common on trailers and in cost-sensitive markets.
Buses and trailers grow faster than trucks
Buses and coaches grow at 5.30%, supported by electric city buses and by EU GSR2 rules for buses from July 2026. Trailers grow at 4.90% as trailer EBS and wear monitoring spread. Heavy trucks grow at 4.40% and medium trucks at 4.10%, following freight cycles.
Electric trucks change the air supply
Battery electric vehicles grow at 19.80%, the fastest-growing propulsion segment, because every electric truck or bus needs an electric compressor and new air processing. Hybrid and fuel cell vehicles grow at 14.60% from a very small base. Diesel and natural gas vehicles, which make up most of today's fleet, grow at 2.20%.
Aftermarket outgrows OEM fitment
The aftermarket grows at 5.00% because air brake parts wear and must be replaced several times over a truck's life, and the global fleet keeps rising. OEM fitment grows at 4.30%. Products such as Cummins' Meritor MFLEX4 pad, which covers about 70% of the Class 8 truck and trailer market, show how suppliers target the replacement business.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Lower-emission disc brakes for Euro 7
In September 2026, at IAA Transportation, ZF Commercial Vehicle Solutions gave the MAXX Uniper single-piston air disc brake its world premiere, promoting lower brake dust emissions ahead of Euro 7 limits. Euro 7 is the first EU standard to cover brake particle emissions, so suppliers now design calipers and pads for low dust as well as stopping power.
Electric air supply for electric trucks and buses
At the same show, ZF presented an Air Supply Unit with its e-comp Scroll electric compressor. EU data shows electrically chargeable trucks rose to 4.2% of new registrations in 2025 from 2.3% in 2024. An electric truck has no engine to drive a compressor, so it needs an electric compressor, controller and air dryer, which raises the value of air supply hardware per vehicle.
Connected brakes and wear monitoring
In March 2026, SAF-Holland launched Haldex BrakeSight at TMC 2026. It monitors pad and rotor wear in real time on ModulT air disc brakes, reports over J1939 and CAN, and can be retrofitted. Fleets want brake data in their telematics to plan maintenance and avoid roadside inspection failures.
Suppliers focus portfolios on braking
Knorr-Bremse completed the sale of GT Emissions Systems in January 2025 under its BOOST 2026 program and agreed to sell its Merak rail HVAC business in July 2026. In February 2025, Cummins renamed its Meritor unit Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems while keeping the Meritor brand. Suppliers are shedding non-core units to invest in brake electronics.
Restraints and Challenges
Truck demand is cyclical
Air brake revenue follows truck production. ACEA registration data show EU new truck registrations fell 6.2% in 2025 to 307,460 units, with heavy trucks down 5.4% and medium trucks down 9.9%. SAF-Holland's sales fell 7.6% to EUR 1,734.4 million in 2025. In North America, ACT Research recorded September 2026 Class 8 net orders of 19,172, down 7% year on year.
US emergency braking rule is still pending
NHTSA and FMCSA proposed automatic emergency braking for heavy vehicles in July 2023. The federal regulatory agenda moved the rule back to the proposed-rule stage, with a second proposal projected for December 2025, and we found no final rule. Without a firm date, US suppliers cannot plan the extra electronic brake content a mandate would bring.
Price pressure from local suppliers
In China and India, local makers such as SORL and Brakes India compete on price for valves, chambers and compressors. Global suppliers win on electronics, but standard air brake parts are under steady price pressure, which limits value growth in drum-brake and chamber segments.
Electrification can reduce air brake use in the long term
Electric trucks recover energy through the motor, so the friction brakes work less and wear more slowly. Some suppliers are also developing electromechanical brakes for commercial vehicles. Over a longer horizon this could reduce replacement demand and move value away from compressed air.
Growth Drivers
Safety mandates add electronic brake content
Rules that require emergency braking and stability control raise the value of the air brake system on each truck and bus. In the EU, GSR2 Level C became mandatory for newly registered buses on July 7, 2026, adding an improved emergency braking function. In India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued draft notification G.S.R. 184(E) in April 2025 to require AEBS, stability control and ABS on M2, M3, N2 and N3 vehicles, with proposed dates of April 1, 2026 for new models and October 1, 2026 for existing ones. India sold a record of about 1.08 million commercial vehicles in fiscal 2026, up 12.6%, according to SIAM. Each new requirement adds modulators, sensors and control units. We estimate safety mandates add about +1.4% to the market's annual growth through 2035.
Shift from drum to disc brakes outside Europe
Air disc brakes cost more than drum brakes and last longer, so each conversion raises revenue per axle. Cummins has cited 60% penetration for air disc brakes, and its MFLEX4 pad covers about 70% of the Class 8 truck and trailer market. ZF CVS launched the MAXX Uniper disc brake in September 2026, and SAF-Holland's Haldex ModulT brake now offers wear sensing. China's heavy truck sales rose 26% to about 1.137 million units in 2025, and Chinese fleets are starting to specify disc brakes on steer and drive axles. Radial Insights attributes roughly 1.1 points of the forecast CAGR to this conversion.
Electric trucks and buses raise air supply value
Electrically chargeable trucks reached 4.2% of new EU truck registrations in 2025, up from 2.3%, and EU bus registrations rose 7.5% to 38,238, led by electric city buses. Each electric vehicle needs an electric compressor, a dedicated controller and a matched air dryer. ZF presented its e-comp Scroll compressor in an integrated Air Supply Unit in September 2026, and Knorr-Bremse's Truck division posted 7.5% higher order intake in the first half of 2026. Global vehicle production reached 96.38 million in 2025, according to OICA production statistics. Commercial vehicles are a small part of that total, but their electric share is rising fast. This driver contributes around 0.9 percentage points of yearly growth in our model, rising after 2030.
Opportunities
Brake data services for fleets
Wear sensors such as Haldex BrakeSight let suppliers sell monitoring and predictive maintenance to fleets. Data services earn recurring revenue and tie fleets to a supplier's replacement parts.
Aftermarket growth in India and Southeast Asia
Rising fleets and stricter roadside inspections in India and Southeast Asia raise demand for genuine replacement valves, chambers and disc brake pads. Suppliers with wide distribution, such as ZF CV Control Systems India, can benefit.
