Metal Ore Projects and Higher Rated Belts Take Steel Cord Conveyor Belts to USD 3.28 Billion by 2035

Demand for steel cord conveyor belts generated USD 2.14 billion in 2025, according to Radial Insights, and the market is set to reach USD 2.23 billion in 2026 and USD 3.28 billion by 2035, growing at a 4.36% CAGR over 2025-2035.

The steel cord conveyor belts market covers rubber conveyor belts reinforced with longitudinal galvanized steel cables, sold by tensile class from below ST1000 to ST10000 and above, for long distance and high lift bulk handling. It includes new belts for greenfield conveyors and replacement belts, across mining, cement and aggregates, ports and bulk terminals, and power and steel plants. Textile ply (EP and nylon) belts, aramid reinforced belts, PVC and solid woven belts, light duty food and logistics belts, splicing services and conveyor hardware such as idlers and pulleys are excluded.

Steel cord belts are chosen when a conveyor runs several kilometres, climbs a steep incline or carries thousands of tonnes per hour, because steel cables stretch far less than fabric plies. That makes the market a direct play on mine expansions and long overland conveyors that replace haul trucks. ContiTech's Phoenocord ST10000, made in Germany and in Ponta Grossa, Brazil, sits at the top of the strength range, and a 13 kilometre conveyor at Codelco's Chuquicamata copper mine moves 10,000 tonnes of ore per hour.

Belts above ST6300 are the fastest growing class at 6.20% a year, and metal and ore mining is the fastest growing end use at 5.85%, while coal mining grows only 2.35% as coal demand plateaus. Africa is the fastest growing region at 5.30% a year. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the largest region, led by China, India and Australia.

Ownership is shifting at the top. In July 2026, Continental agreed to sell ContiTech to Lone Star Funds for EUR 4.0 billion, and Fenner Conveyors, part of Michelin, opened a 40 million dollar materials hub at Kwinana in March 2026 to support its steel cord belt lines in the steel cord conveyor belts market.

Belts Above ST6300 Gain From Longer and Steeper Conveyors

Belts above ST6300 grow at 6.20% a year as miners build longer single flight conveyors that need fewer transfer points. ContiTech's ST7800 belt at Minera Los Pelambres and its ST8000 belt at Vale's S11D iron ore operation show where this demand comes from, and Fenner Conveyors delivered an ST6300 belt to an underground gold mine in New South Wales. The ST4000 to ST6300 class grows at 5.05%, the ST2000 to ST4000 class, which serves most coal and cement conveyors, at 4.10%, and belts up to ST2000 at 3.40%.

Energy Saving Covers Lead Cover Grade Growth

Low rolling resistance covers grow at 6.10% a year because they cut conveyor drive power on long overland systems, where energy is the largest operating cost. Heat resistant covers grow at 4.55% in cement and steel plants, oil and chemical resistant covers at 4.30%, and general purpose and abrasion resistant covers at 4.05%. Fire resistant covers, used mostly in underground coal, grow at 3.80%, though the ISO 15236-3 revision for underground belts keeps safety specifications in focus.

Metal and Ore Mining Outpaces Coal

Metal and ore mining grows at 5.85% a year, driven by copper, iron ore, gold and phosphate projects, including the 120 million tonne a year Simandou iron ore project in Guinea. Ports and bulk terminals grow at 4.95% as ore export volumes rise, and cement and aggregates at 4.40%. Power and steel plants grow at 3.20%. Coal mining, still a large user, grows at 2.35% because the IEA expects global coal demand to plateau and edge down by 2030.

Wider Belts Expand Faster

Belts above 2,000 mm wide grow at 5.30% a year because high capacity mine conveyors increasingly use 2,400 to 3,200 mm widths. Belts from 1,200 to 2,000 mm grow at 4.40%, and belts up to 1,200 mm at 3.65%.

Replacement Sales Edge Ahead of New Installations

Replacement belts grow at 4.50% a year against 4.15% for new installations. A steel cord belt in hard rock service often lasts five to ten years, and the large base of installed conveyors in China, Australia and Chile creates steady replacement orders, such as the recent replacement of the Chuquicamata belt.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Ownership Changes at the Largest Belt Makers

The leading supplier is changing hands. In July 2026, Continental agreed to sell ContiTech to Lone Star Funds for EUR 4.0 billion, plus up to EUR 250 million in later payments. ContiTech had fiscal 2025 sales of about EUR 4.4 billion, roughly 80% from industrial customers, and employs about 22,000 people. Radial Insights expects private equity ownership to bring a sharper focus on high margin mining belts, where ContiTech's Phoenocord range leads the steel cord conveyor belts market.

Recycled Content and Circular Belt Programs

Belt makers are starting to reuse rubber from worn belts. On 19 March 2026, Fenner Conveyors opened its K-MIX Materials Innovation Hub in Kwinana, Western Australia, a project valued at 40 million dollars that adds a rubber mixing plant next to its steel cord belt lines. It launched the InfinitySeries belt, its first with recycled material, through a partnership with Tyrecycle that recovers end of life conveyor belts.

Stricter Safety Standards for Underground Belts

ISO is revising ISO 15236-3, the standard covering special safety requirements for steel cord belts used underground. The draft passed its DIS ballot in April 2025, the FDIS ballot ran from September to November 2025, and final text was resubmitted for approval in September 2026. Once published, the third edition will replace the 2017 version and push coal and underground metal mines to upgrade fire resistant belts.

Iron Ore and Copper Projects Shift Demand Toward Africa and Latin America

New ore projects need long, strong belts. The Simandou project in Guinea dispatched its first shipment in November 2025 and can handle up to 120 million tonnes a year, about 7% of global seaborne export loadings. In Chile, the 13 kilometre Chuquicamata conveyor, moving 10,000 tonnes of ore per hour, was recently re-belted. These projects favor belts above ST4000 and widths above 2,000 mm.

Restraints and Challenges

Coal Demand Has Reached a Plateau

Coal mines and coal fired power plants are among the largest users of steel cord belts. The IEA said in December 2025 that global coal demand would reach a record of about 8.85 billion tonnes in 2025 but then plateau and edge down by 2030, as explained in its Coal 2025 release. China's demand is expected to fall slightly, which limits new coal conveyor projects and keeps the coal segment at 2.35% annual growth.

Project Delays and Lumpy Orders

Large belt orders depend on mine investment decisions. Semperit reported that conveyor belt customers postponed projects in the first quarter of 2025, and its Semperit Engineered Applications division, which includes Sempertrans belting, saw revenue fall 4.4% to EUR 391.5 million in 2025. A single overland conveyor can need tens of kilometres of belt, so one delayed project can swing a supplier's annual sales.

Rubber and Steel Cord Costs

Steel cord belts use natural and synthetic rubber, carbon black and high tensile galvanized steel cable. Price swings in these inputs and in energy hit margins because belt contracts are often fixed for months. Producers also face long lead times for heavy calendering and press equipment when they add capacity.

Safety Compliance Costs

Underground belts must pass fire, drum friction and electrical resistance tests under the revised ISO 15236-3 standard and national mining rules. Testing and certification add cost and time, and smaller producers in China and India may struggle to qualify for underground contracts in Australia, Europe and North America.

Growth Drivers

Metal Mining Expansion and Ore Grade Decline

Copper, iron ore, gold and phosphate miners are expanding output, and falling ore grades mean more rock must be moved for each tonne of metal. The Simandou iron ore project in Guinea started shipping in November 2025 with capacity of up to 120 million tonnes a year. In Saudi Arabia, Ma'aden awarded contracts in January 2025 for phase one of its Phosphate 3 expansion, due for completion by the end of 2026, and set 2025 capital spending of SAR 7.6 to 9.6 billion. ContiTech's ST8000 belt at Vale's S11D operation and ST7800 belt at Los Pelambres show how these projects use the highest belt ratings. Radial Insights estimates that metal mining adds about +1.5% of annual growth to the steel cord conveyor belts market, which explains the 5.85% growth rate for metal and ore mining.

Replacing Haul Trucks With Overland Conveyors

Mines are replacing diesel haul trucks with conveyors to cut fuel use, labor and emissions. A single belt line such as the 13 kilometre Chuquicamata conveyor, which moves 10,000 tonnes per hour, can replace a large truck fleet. In-pit crushing and conveying systems need high strength, wide steel cord belts, often above ST4000 and up to 3,200 mm wide. Fenner Conveyors' K-MIX hub in Western Australia, opened in March 2026, was built to serve this kind of demand from local iron ore and gold mines. This shift contributes an estimated 1.0 percentage point to the market CAGR and lifts demand for belts above 2,000 mm wide, which grow at 5.30% a year.

Bulk Port and Terminal Investment

Ore, coal and grain exports need long conveyors from stockyards to ship loaders. The Simandou project added a new port at Morebaya served by Capesize carriers, and China's record 4.83 billion tonnes of raw coal output in 2025 kept domestic port and power plant conveyors busy. Port operators are also upgrading to wider and faster belts to load larger ships. Radial Insights credits port and terminal investment with close to 0.6 points of annual market growth, centered on the ports and bulk terminals segment at 4.95% a year.

Opportunities

Belt Monitoring and Service Contracts

Steel cord scanning, rip detection and splice monitoring help mines predict failures before a belt breaks. Suppliers that bundle belts with monitoring, splicing and maintenance can sell multi year service contracts and lock in replacement orders.

Low Rolling Resistance and Recycled Belts

Energy saving covers, which grow at 6.10% a year, can cut drive power on long conveyors, and recycled content belts such as Fenner's InfinitySeries help miners meet sustainability goals. Suppliers that prove lower energy use and lower carbon footprints can win tenders at large mining companies.
