Hybrid and dual-clutch gearboxes now carry clutch growth as manual sales fade

Global spending on automotive clutches reached USD 15.36 Billion in 2025 by Radial Insights' estimate, and should rise to USD 15.84 Billion in 2026 and USD 20.88 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 3.12%. The automotive clutch market is shifting from foot-operated dry clutches toward wet clutches inside hybrid and dual-clutch transmissions.

Scope covers clutch kits (driven disc, pressure plate and release bearing), dual-mass flywheels, dry and wet clutch packs for dual-clutch and automated manual transmissions, clutches inside dedicated hybrid transmissions, and the hydraulic and electric actuators that operate them. It covers passenger cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles and two-wheelers, sold to automakers and in the aftermarket. Torque converters, lock-up clutches inside conventional automatic gearboxes, and industrial or agricultural power take-off clutches are excluded.

Demand rests on vehicle output, which OICA put at about 96.4 million units in 2025, up 3.9%, and on a large installed base of manual cars that need clutch replacement every 100,000 km or so. Asia Pacific (APAC) leads, with India, Southeast Asia and much of China's commercial fleet still using manual or automated manual gearboxes. Europe is losing manual volume fast but gains value from dual-mass flywheels and remanufactured dual-clutch units.

Clutches for hybrid dedicated transmissions are the fastest growing segment at 6.80% a year, following the rise of plug-in hybrids in China. Africa is the fastest growing region at 4.20% a year from a small base, while APAC holds 47.80% of global revenue.

Battery electric cars without multi-speed gearboxes remove clutch content entirely, which is why total growth in this market trails vehicle output. Suppliers are responding with e-clutch actuators for motorcycles and hybrids and with aftermarket programs, where margins are higher.

Dual-clutch modules and actuators outgrow classic clutch kits

Dual-clutch transmission clutches rise at 5.20% and actuation systems at 4.40%, while clutch kits grow at 2.10% and dual-mass flywheels at 2.85%. Clutch kits remain the largest product line because of the manual car park in India, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa, but each new DCT or hybrid gearbox carries a clutch module worth several times a manual kit. BorgWarner won two DCT clutch programs in China in May 2025, one built in Tianjin and one in Taicang, a sign of where volume is moving.

Wet multi-plate clutches gain as gearboxes get more torque

Wet multi-plate clutches grow at 4.80% against 2.30% for dry friction clutches. Wet packs handle the high torque of hybrid systems and are used in most DCTs above compact size. Electromagnetic clutches, used in compressors and some hybrid disconnect units, grow at 3.40%.

Hybrid dedicated transmissions lead while manuals barely grow

Clutches inside hybrid dedicated transmissions grow at 6.80%, the fastest of any segment, followed by dual-clutch at 4.95% and automated manual at 4.10%. Schaeffler started mass production of a hybrid transmission family in Taicang in March 2026. Manual transmission clutches grow at only 1.40%, because new manual car sales fall in Europe and China, though replacement demand in older fleets keeps the segment from shrinking.

Two-wheelers grow fastest among vehicle types

Two-wheeler clutches grow at 4.60%, well ahead of passenger cars at 2.55%. India sold about 2.17 crore two-wheelers in FY2025-26, almost all with wet clutches, and Honda and Yamaha are adding automated clutch systems that raise content per bike. Light commercial vehicles at 2.95% and heavy commercial vehicles at 2.70% grow with freight, as trucks move from manual to automated manual gearboxes.

The aftermarket grows faster than OEM supply

The aftermarket expands at 3.75% and OEM supply at 2.70%. Clutch kits and flywheels wear out, and the global manual car park will keep needing them well after new manual sales fall. Schaeffler's aftermarket division grew 5.0% in 2025 while its powertrain division fell 5.2%.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Automated clutches are reaching motorcycles

Honda launched its E-Clutch on the CB650R and CBR650R in 2024 and in November 2025 extended it to five more 2026 models, including the XL750 Transalp, CB750 Hornet and NX500. In Australia about two thirds of CB650R and CBR650R buyers chose the E-Clutch version. Yamaha put the MT-07 Y-AMT on sale in Japan in February 2025 at JPY 1,056,000, about JPY 88,000 more than the standard bike, which shows riders will pay for automated clutch control.

Remanufactured dual-clutch units are entering the aftermarket

Valeo won the EQUIP AUTO Paris 2025 aftermarket innovation award in October 2025 for a remanufactured DQ250 dual wet clutch. The DQ250 gearbox is fitted to more than 5 million vehicles in Europe, and Valeo planned Europe-wide supply from the end of November 2025. Remanufacturing lets garages replace an expensive DCT clutch at lower cost and gives suppliers a second revenue stream from each unit.

Longer warranties are becoming a selling point

ZF Aftermarket gave SACHS clutches a three-year warranty from January 1, 2025, aimed at independent garages. In the heavy truck sector, Eaton launched an aftermarket kit for the Endurant automated transmission in January 2025 that pairs its Advantage automated clutch with a Cummins flywheel in one box, which reduces mismatched parts and repeat repairs.

China's plug-in hybrid boom is pulling clutch investment east

OICA reported that China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, including 16.6 million new energy vehicles, up 29%. Many Chinese plug-in hybrids use dedicated hybrid transmissions with one or more wet clutches. BorgWarner's Taicang plant began a new DCT clutch module for a Chinese transmission maker by late 2025, and Schaeffler opened hybrid transmission production in the same city in March 2026.

Restraints and Challenges

Battery electric cars carry no clutch

Most battery electric cars use a single-speed reduction gear with no clutch, so every BEV sold in place of a petrol car removes clutch content. China's NEV output of 16.6 million units in 2025, reported by OICA, includes a growing share of pure electric models that need no clutch at all.

Manual gearboxes are disappearing from new cars in mature markets

Vehicle Data Global figures cited by Fleet News show manuals at 13.7% of new UK cars, and the manual share among petrol and diesel buyers fell from 55% in 2019 to 34% in 2025. In India, CRISIL expects the manual share of passenger vehicle sales to fall from 71-73% in FY2023 to 55-60% by FY2028.

Weak truck markets cut OEM orders

The EU registered 307,460 new trucks in 2025, down 6.2%, according to ACEA, and van registrations fell 8.8%. Exedy's revenue fell 3.7% in the six months to September 2025, with its Americas revenue down 25.1% after the closure of a loss-making US subsidiary.

Restructuring at large suppliers

Schaeffler's powertrain and chassis division, home of LuK clutches, saw revenue fall 5.2% to EUR 8,900 million in 2025. Suppliers must keep funding wet clutch and actuator development for hybrids while classic clutch volumes shrink, which strains engineering budgets.

Growth Drivers

Hybrid and dual-clutch transmissions add higher-value clutch content

Hybrid gearboxes in China and Europe use wet clutches to connect the engine, motor and wheels, and DCTs need two clutches with an actuator. BorgWarner signed a seven-year extension in May 2025 to supply DCT clutch assemblies from Tianjin to a German automaker for petrol and mild hybrid cars, plus a new DCT clutch module from Taicang for a Chinese transmission maker. Schaeffler began mass production of a dedicated hybrid transmission family in Taicang in March 2026 for China and Europe. With China producing 16.6 million NEVs in 2025, a large share of them plug-in hybrids, Radial Insights estimates that hybrid and DCT adoption adds about +1.2% of annual growth to the clutch market through 2035.

A large manual car and truck park drives steady aftermarket demand

Even as new manual sales fall in Europe, the global fleet of manual cars, vans and trucks is huge and ages each year. Manuals still made up 63% of new light commercial vehicles in the UK last year according to Vehicle Data Global, and most cars in India, Brazil, South Africa and Southeast Asia still use a clutch pedal. Schaeffler's Vehicle Lifetime Solutions division, which sells LuK RepSet kits and dual-mass flywheels, grew 5.0% in 2025 to EUR 3,038 million with a 14.8% EBIT margin. ZF Aftermarket and Valeo are using warranties and remanufactured units to win garage business. This replacement cycle contributes roughly 0.9 points to the market's yearly growth.

Two-wheeler volume and automated clutches lift Asian demand

India sold about 2.17 crore two-wheelers in FY2025-26, up 10.7%, and exported a record 51.8 lakh units, up 23.4%, according to SIAM data reported by Acko Drive. Every geared motorcycle and many scooters use a wet multi-plate clutch made by suppliers such as FCC and Exedy. Honda's E-Clutch and Yamaha's Y-AMT add actuators and sensors to the clutch, raising content per bike, and Honda extended E-Clutch to five more models in November 2025. Schaeffler India grew revenue 13.9% in the third quarter of 2025 on strong local demand. Radial Insights credits this driver with close to 0.7 points of the market's annual growth rate.

Opportunities

Remanufactured DCT and flywheel programs

Valeo's remanufactured DQ250 dual wet clutch targets a gearbox fitted to more than 5 million European vehicles. Similar programs for other DCT families and for dual-mass flywheels could give suppliers higher margins in an aftermarket that grows at 3.75% a year.

Clutch actuators for hybrids and motorcycles

Clutch actuation systems grow at 4.40% a year. Electric actuators for hybrid disconnect clutches, automated manual truck gearboxes and motorcycle systems like E-Clutch let suppliers sell electronics and software alongside friction parts.

APAC holds almost half of clutch revenue while Africa grows fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025 and India 6.49 million, and India sold about 2.17 crore two-wheelers in FY2025-26. Hybrid gearbox production in Taicang by Schaeffler and BorgWarner adds wet clutch demand in APAC.

North America

North America holds an 18.60% share in 2025. North American revenue is about USD 2.86 Billion in 2025 and USD 3.59 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 2.30%. US vehicle production was 10.24 million units in 2025, but few US cars use manual gearboxes. Heavy trucks matter more here, and Eaton's Endurant automated transmission with Advantage clutch is a common fit in North American Class 8 trucks.

Europe

Europe holds a 22.40% share in 2025. European revenue is about USD 3.44 Billion in 2025 and USD 4.14 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 1.86%. Europe produced 17.2 million vehicles in 2025, down 0.8%, and UK manual share among petrol and diesel car buyers fell to 34% in 2025. Europe still has a large manual car park, which supports Valeo, ZF and Schaeffler aftermarket sales.

Latin America

Latin America holds a 5.60% share in 2025. Latin American revenue is about USD 0.86 Billion in 2025 and USD 1.17 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 3.10%. Brazil produced 2.644 million vehicles in 2025, up 3.5%, and exported 528,800 units, up 32.1%, according to Anfavea. Manual gearboxes remain common on entry cars and pickups in Brazil and Argentina.

The Middle East holds a 3.30% share in 2025. Middle East revenue is about USD 0.51 Billion in 2025 and USD 0.72 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 3.60%. Saudi Arabia sold 857,247 new vehicles in 2025, up 3.6% and its best year in a decade. Pickups, vans and buses with manual gearboxes are widely used in the Gulf, and hot climates shorten clutch life.

Africa

Africa holds a 2.30% share in 2025 and grows fastest. African revenue is about USD 0.35 Billion in 2025 and USD 0.53 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 4.20%. South Africa sold 596,818 new vehicles in 2025, up 15.7%, with light commercial sales of 143,637 units. Most African cars and bakkies use manual gearboxes, and used imports from Japan and Europe add replacement clutch demand.
