New tire plants from Egypt to Malaysia are lifting orders for steel cord and fabric calender lines

Radial Insights sizes the rubber calendering machines market at USD 512.40 Million in 2025, with sales of USD 534.74 Million in 2026 and USD 785.14 Million by 2035, a CAGR of 4.36% over 2025-2035. Tire makers buy most of these machines, and their capacity drive in Southeast Asia, North Africa, Mexico and India sets the pace.

Scope covers new rubber calenders and complete calendering lines: two-, three- and four-roll calenders in I, L, inverted L, S and Z layouts, steel cord and textile cord calendering lines for tire plies and belts, inner liner calenders, and sheeting calenders for conveyor belts, hoses, roofing membranes and footwear. It includes let-off, cooling, gauge control and wind-up units sold as part of a line. Plastic film and PVC calenders, used machines, spare rolls and service contracts are excluded.

The rubber calendering machines market is small but tied to large capital projects. A single steel cord line can cost several million dollars, and a new radial tire plant typically needs at least one steel cord line, one textile line and inner liner capacity. The ERJ Tire and Rubber Machinery Survey 2025 found that suppliers reporting in both years grew combined machinery sales by 14.1% to USD 3,735 million, with Chinese firms such as MESNAC and Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery near the top.

Digitally connected calender lines are the fastest growing segment at 7.20% a year, as buyers want closed-loop gauge control and AI-based monitoring. Africa is the fastest growing region at 5.60% a year, led by tire plant projects in Egypt and Morocco, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 56.20% of sales.

Demand is lumpy. Orders rise when tire makers commit capex and slow when utilization drops, so the forecast assumes plant projects announced in 2025 and 2026 move ahead on roughly their stated schedules.

Four-roll calenders lead because they coat both sides of cord in one pass

Four-roll calenders grow at 5.10%, against 3.70% for three-roll and 2.80% for two-roll machines. A four-roll calender applies rubber to both sides of steel or textile cord in a single pass, which tire plants need for belts and body plies. Two-roll machines still serve small sheeting jobs in footwear and general rubber goods, where budgets are tight.

S-type layouts gain from multi-purpose tire lines

S-type calenders grow at 5.40% and Z-type at 4.60%, ahead of L-type at 4.10% and I-type at 2.90%. Comerio Ercole's TRIPLE 4-roll S-type calender, shown at Tire Technology Expo 2026, handles textile cord, steel cord and sheeting on one line, which appeals to new plants that want flexibility while volumes ramp up.

Steel cord lines grow fastest because radial truck and car tires need steel belts

Steel cord calendering lines rise at 5.30%, inner liner lines at 4.80%, textile cord lines at 4.40% and sheeting calenders at 3.10%. Every new radial plant needs steel belt capacity, and truck and bus radial plants such as Sailun's Egypt project use steel cord for the full carcass. Comerio Ercole says its FASTEEL system cuts steel cord setup time by up to 95%, a key cost point for buyers running many cord constructions.

Digitally connected lines lead automation upgrades

Digitally connected calender lines grow at 7.20%, the fastest of any segment, while automated lines with gauge control grow at 4.30% and conventional machines at only 1.60%. Buyers want thickness scanning, closed-loop roll gap control and data links to plant systems. Comerio Ercole now markets CELEMETRY and MINERV-AI software alongside its lines.

Tire manufacturing outpaces other end uses

Tire manufacturing grows at 4.85%, ahead of conveyor belts at 3.90%, roofing membranes at 3.60%, hoses and industrial rubber goods at 3.40% and footwear at 2.70%. Conveyor belt demand follows mining capex, and Linglong's planned Egypt complex includes conveyor belt production alongside tires. Footwear grows slowly because shoe sole production has shifted to injection molding.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Chinese tire makers are building plants abroad and buying Chinese machines

Prinx Chengshan is building a USD 300 million plant in Kedah Rubber City, Malaysia, with a first phase of 6 million car tires and 600,000 truck tires a year. The company told ERJ in October 2025 that more than 95% of the equipment comes from Chinese suppliers and that it expects operation in the fourth quarter of 2026. Sailun broke ground on a USD 1 billion plant at Sokhna, Egypt, in September 2025, and Linglong signed an MoU for a roughly USD 2 billion complex at Borg El Arab, Egypt, in September 2026. These projects favor MESNAC, Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery and other Chinese line makers.

Multi-purpose calender lines are replacing single-task machines

Comerio Ercole showed its TRIPLE platform at Tire Technology Expo 2026 in Hannover in March 2026, with one 4-roll S-type calender for textile cord, steel cord and sheeting. Its ZEUS modular line won Innovation of the Year at the Tire Technology International Awards 2026. Buyers want fewer machines that can switch between products quickly.

Software and AI are becoming part of the calender sale

Comerio Ercole now sells CELEMETRY monitoring and MINERV-AI tools with its lines, and Rodolfo Comerio opened a Calendering Technology Center in Solbiate Olona, Italy, in May 2025 with two 4-roll lines rated up to 2,000 kg/h for customer trials. Data from gauge scanners and roll drives helps plants cut scrap on high-value steel cord plies.

Indian tire makers are back in a capex cycle

Indian tire makers were running at about 85% to 90% utilization or more in June 2026 and lined up new investment. Apollo planned about Rs 3,500 crore of capex for FY27, CEAT Rs 1,300 to 1,400 crore and BKT Rs 1,500 to 1,800 crore. JK Tyre approved Rs 4,980 crore in May 2026 for car and truck radial expansion at Chennai and Mysuru, adding about 24% capacity by December 2029.

Restraints and Challenges

Order flow depends on lumpy tire capex

Calender demand rises and falls with new plant decisions. In Europe, ETRMA data showed consumer replacement tire sales down 1% to 110.3 million units in the first half of 2025, and truck tire sales down 4%, which slows brownfield investment in European plants.

Flat demand in mature tire markets

The USTMA forecast put 2025 US tire shipments at 337.4 million units, almost unchanged from 337.3 million in 2024. Flat volumes mean US and European plants mostly upgrade existing calenders rather than buy new lines.

Price pressure from Chinese line makers

When Prinx Chengshan sources more than 95% of its Malaysian plant equipment from Chinese suppliers, European calender makers face tough price competition on export projects. Western suppliers must win on uptime, software and service rather than machine price.

Long lead times and project risk

Large calender lines take many months to build, ship and commission, and some announced plants move slowly. Linglong's Egypt complex was still at feasibility stage in September 2026 with no capacity figures, so suppliers carry risk when they plan production around announced projects.

Growth Drivers

New radial tire plants in emerging regions need full calendering lines

A wave of tire plants is under way outside China. Sailun's Sokhna plant in Egypt starts with 3 million car tires and 600,000 truck tires a year in 2026 and is designed for more than 10 million tires at full build. Prinx Chengshan's Malaysian plant targets 6 million car tires and 600,000 truck tires in its first phase. The Sailun and Tire Direct joint venture produced its first tire in Irapuato, Mexico, on May 31, 2025, at a USD 400 million plant rated up to 6 million tires a year. In Saudi Arabia, a PIF company awarded a USD 167 million contract in September 2025 for a Pirelli plant of about 3.5 million tires a year. Each new radial plant needs steel cord, textile and inner liner calendering, so Radial Insights estimates this greenfield wave adds about +1.6% of annual growth to calender demand through 2030.

Indian capacity expansion is reaching its limit and forcing new lines

Indian tire makers were running at 85% to 90% utilization or more in mid 2026, according to Autocar Pro. JK Tyre approved Rs 4,980 crore of capex in May 2026 and has Rs 6,110 crore in its pipeline, while BKT plans about Rs 6,800 crore through FY29. Apollo planned about Rs 3,500 crore for FY27. India's two-wheeler sales of about 2.17 crore units in FY2025-26 and record exports also need more bias and radial tire capacity. Local suppliers such as L&T Rubber Processing Machinery, Kobelco's Indian unit and Bainite Machines compete with Comerio Ercole and Chinese makers for these projects. This driver lifts the market's growth rate by roughly 0.8 points a year.

Automation upgrades at existing plants

Plants in Europe, North America and Japan face flat volumes, so they invest in quality and labor savings instead of new capacity. Upgrading an older calender with thickness scanning, closed-loop roll gap control and fast changeover tools cuts scrap and setup time. Comerio Ercole's FASTEEL system claims up to 95% lower setup time on steel cord lines, and its ZEUS line won an industry award in March 2026. Troester and HF Group also sell upgrade packages for roller-head and calender systems. Radial Insights estimates retrofit and automation spending contributes about 0.7 points of the market's annual growth.

Opportunities

Packaged lines for first-time tire makers

New entrants in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Southeast Asia often lack in-house process engineers. Suppliers that can deliver a complete calendering line with training, recipes and remote support can win these projects, which explains Africa's 5.60% growth rate.

Software and service revenue

Digitally connected lines grow at 7.20% a year. Monitoring software, predictive maintenance and AI quality tools give machine makers recurring revenue between large orders.

APAC buys more than half of all calenders while Africa adds the most new capacity per year

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 56.20% share of the rubber calendering machines market in 2025. APAC sales are about USD 287.97 Million in 2025 and USD 464.62 Million by 2035, a CAGR of 4.90%. In APAC, Prinx Chengshan's USD 300 million Malaysian plant targets 6 million car tires in phase one, and Indian tire makers such as JK Tyre approved Rs 4,980 crore of new capex in May 2026. APAC is also home to the largest calender makers, including MESNAC and Dalian Rubber & Plastics Machinery.

North America

North America holds a 12.10% share in 2025. North America sales are about USD 62.00 Million in 2025 and USD 83.32 Million by 2035, a CAGR of 3.00%. USTMA expected North America's largest market, the United States, to ship 337.4 million tires in 2025, including 221.6 million replacement passenger tires. In North America, Mexico added the USD 400 million Sailun and Tire Direct plant in Irapuato in 2025 with capacity of up to 6 million tires a year.

In Europe, ETRMA reported consumer replacement tire sales of 110.3 million units in the first half of 2025, down 1%. Europe is home to Comerio Ercole, Rodolfo Comerio, Troester and HF Group, and Rodolfo Comerio opened a calendering center in Italy in May 2025.

Latin America

Latin America holds a 5.30% share in 2025. Latin American sales are about USD 27.16 Million in 2025 and USD 40.59 Million by 2035, a CAGR of 4.10%. Brazil, the largest market in Latin America, produced 2.644 million vehicles in 2025, up 3.5%, and exported 528,800 vehicles, up 32.1%, according to Anfavea. Latin American conveyor belt makers serving mining in Chile, Peru and Brazil also buy sheeting calenders.

Middle East

The Middle East holds a 4.90% share in 2025. Middle East sales are about USD 25.11 Million in 2025 and USD 42.08 Million by 2035, a CAGR of 5.30%. In the Middle East, a PIF company awarded a USD 167 million contract in September 2025 for a Saudi Pirelli plant of about 3.5 million tires a year, with production expected in 2026.
