Electric Drive Bearings Push the Automotive Bearings Market to USD 38.97 Billion by 2035

Radial Insights sizes the automotive bearings market at USD 26.48 billion in 2025, rising to USD 27.52 billion in 2026 and USD 38.97 billion by 2035, which equals a 3.94% CAGR for 2025-2035.

The study covers rolling and plain bearings sold for use in road vehicles: wheel hub units, transmission and driveline bearings, engine bearings, bearings for electric motors and e-axles, steering and suspension bearings, and bearings in auxiliary systems such as pumps, alternators, turbochargers and air conditioning compressors. It includes passenger cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles and two-wheelers, and both factory fitment and aftermarket sales. Bearings for off-highway machines, rail, aircraft and industrial equipment, and loose bearing components such as balls and rollers sold to other bearing makers, are excluded.

Vehicle output sets the base. OICA reported world production of 96.4 million vehicles in 2025, up 3.9%, and China alone built 34.53 million, including 16.626 million new energy vehicles. Every car uses 100 or more bearings, but the mix is changing: an electric drive unit removes most engine and multi speed gearbox bearings while adding high speed motor bearings with electrical insulation, which carry higher prices per unit.

That is why bearings for e-motors and e-axles grow fastest at 11.20% a year, far ahead of engine bearings at 0.95%. Africa is the fastest growing region at 5.25% a year. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the largest region, with close to half of global revenue.

The supplier base is being rebuilt. SKF set 1 December 2026 for the Nasdaq Stockholm listing of its automotive business, SKF Vertevo, and NSK and NTN agreed in May 2026 to combine their businesses under a joint holding company from October 2027. These moves will reshape how the automotive bearings market is served for the next decade.

Ball Bearings Gain as Electric Motors Spread

Ball bearings grow at 4.25% a year, the fastest bearing type, because deep groove ball bearings are the standard choice for electric motor rotors and auxiliary units. NSK's March 2025 compact deep groove bearing for EVs, which is 51% lighter and runs above a dmn value of 2.14 million, shows how makers are tailoring this type for high speed motors. Cylindrical and spherical roller bearings follow at 3.90%, needle roller bearings at 3.70% and tapered roller bearings at 3.35%. Plain bearings grow slowest at 2.40% because they are tied to engine crankshafts and connecting rods.

E-Motor and e-Axle Bearings Lead All Applications

E-motor and e-axle bearings rise at 11.20% a year from a small base, as every battery electric and hybrid vehicle needs at least two motor bearings plus reduction gear bearings. Wheel hub units grow at 3.85%, close to vehicle output, with extra value from heavier EVs that need stronger hub bearings. Steering and suspension bearings grow at 3.55% and auxiliary systems at 3.40%. Transmission and driveline bearings slow to 2.65% because single speed EV reducers use fewer bearings than six to ten speed automatic gearboxes, and engine bearings barely grow at 0.95%.

Two-Wheelers and Light Commercial Vehicles Outpace Cars

Two-wheelers grow at 4.80% a year, supported by high motorcycle and scooter output in India, Southeast Asia and Africa and by electric scooters. Light commercial vehicles grow at 4.10% as delivery fleets expand. Passenger cars, the largest segment, grow at 3.95%, and heavy commercial vehicles at 3.30%.

Battery Electric Vehicles Drive Propulsion Mix

Bearings for battery electric vehicles grow at 9.65% a year and those for hybrids at 7.40%, while bearings for vehicles with only a combustion engine grow at 0.85%. Hybrids keep many engine and gearbox bearings and add motor bearings, so they carry the highest bearing content per vehicle.

Aftermarket Grows Faster Than OEM Sales

Aftermarket sales grow at 4.40% a year against 3.75% for OEM sales. The global car fleet is ageing, and wheel hub bearings, the most common replacement item, wear faster on heavier vehicles. Schaeffler's Vehicle Lifetime Solutions division grew 2.6% to EUR 3,038 million in 2025, while its Powertrain and Chassis division fell 7.8%, which reflects this gap.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Bearing Makers Are Separating or Combining Their Automotive Units

Leading suppliers are changing their structure to deal with low margins in automotive. SKF confirmed in September 2026 that its automotive business, SKF Vertevo, would list on Nasdaq Stockholm on 1 December 2026; the unit had net revenues of SEK 25.9 billion and adjusted EBITDA of SEK 1.6 billion in 2025. In May 2026, NSK and NTN signed a basic agreement to set up a joint holding company in October 2027, with both firms kept as subsidiaries. Radial Insights expects these moves to lead to more plant consolidation and price discipline in the automotive bearings market.

Product Design Is Shifting to High Speed and Insulated Bearings

Electric motors run at 15,000 to 20,000 rpm or more and can pass stray currents through bearings, which damages raceways. Suppliers are responding with ceramic balls, insulated coatings and new cage designs. NSK's March 2025 EV deep groove ball bearing is 10% smaller in outer diameter, 38% narrower and has 25% lower torque than earlier products, and NSK says it can cut 4.4 kilograms from a coaxial e-axle.

Production Growth Has Moved East

OICA data released in April 2026 show Asia Pacific vehicle production rose 7.6% in 2025 to about 59.2 million units, more than 61% of world output, while Europe fell 0.8% to 17.2 million and the Americas fell 2.1% to 18.74 million. Bearing makers are following this shift by adding capacity in China and India and by competing with Chinese suppliers such as C&U Group and Wafangdian Bearing Group.

Trade Rules Are Pushing Local Sourcing

US tariffs of 25% on imported vehicles from April 2025, and on certain automobile parts from no later than 3 May 2025, have encouraged carmakers to buy more bearings from plants in North America. Suppliers with US plants, such as The Timken Company, Schaeffler and NSK, gain an edge with US assembly plants, while importers face higher costs.

Restraints and Challenges

Fewer Bearings per Electric Drivetrain

Battery electric vehicles remove the engine and most of the multi speed transmission, cutting the number of bearings per vehicle even though motor bearings cost more. Engine bearings grow at only 0.95% a year and transmission bearings at 2.65%. China's 16.626 million new energy vehicles in 2025, reported by OICA, show how quickly this shift is taking place in the largest market.

Weak Vehicle Output in Europe and the Americas

European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million in 2025 and production in the Americas fell 2.1% to 18.74 million. Schaeffler reported 2025 group revenue of EUR 23,492 million, down 3.4%, with its Powertrain and Chassis division down 7.8%. Lower volumes at Western plants squeeze margins for bearing makers with high fixed costs in Germany, France and the United States.

Price Pressure From Carmakers and Chinese Suppliers

Carmakers demand yearly price cuts of 1% to 3% on high volume parts such as wheel hub units. Chinese bearing makers, backed by their home market of 34.53 million vehicles a year, offer lower prices in export markets. This keeps margins thin; SKF's automotive unit earned adjusted EBITDA of SEK 1.6 billion on SEK 25.9 billion of revenue in 2025, a margin of about 6%.

Steel Costs and Tariffs

Bearings are made from high carbon chromium steel, so steel price swings and tariffs on steel and auto parts raise costs. Tariffs of 25% on many imported automobile parts in the United States from 2025 increased landed costs for bearings made in Asia and Europe and forced suppliers to rethink where they build.

Growth Drivers

Electrification of Drivetrains

Electric and hybrid vehicles need new kinds of bearings. Each e-motor uses at least two high speed bearings, and e-axles add reduction gear and differential bearings, many with insulation or ceramic balls that sell for several times the price of a standard bearing. China built 16.626 million new energy vehicles in 2025, up 29%, according to OICA, and Schaeffler's E-Mobility division grew 4.1% to EUR 5,015 million while its other automotive units shrank. NSK's March 2025 compact EV bearing, 51% lighter than earlier products, was designed for these motors. Radial Insights estimates that electrification contributes about +1.6% of annual growth to the automotive bearings market over 2025-2035, which is why e-motor and e-axle bearings grow at 11.20% a year.

Rising Vehicle Production and Fleet Size

OICA reported 96.4 million vehicles produced in 2025, up 3.9%, and 99.8 million sold, up 4.7%. US light vehicle sales reached 16.2 million in 2025, Brazil produced about 2.65 million vehicles, and Turkey built 1,419,464 units, up 4%. Each new vehicle carries a full set of wheel, steering and auxiliary bearings, and a larger vehicle park creates more replacement demand. Radial Insights credits volume growth with roughly 1.4 points of the market CAGR, with the strongest effect in Asia Pacific (APAC), where production rose 7.6% in 2025.

Heavier Vehicles and Longer Service Lives

SUVs, pickup trucks and battery electric cars weigh more than the sedans they replace, so wheel hub units must carry higher loads and last longer. Carmakers now ask for hub bearings that last the life of the vehicle, which raises bearing size, steel content and price. Ageing fleets in North America and Europe also push aftermarket sales, which grow at 4.40% a year. Schaeffler's Vehicle Lifetime Solutions division grew 2.6% in 2025 while the group overall fell. We estimate this driver lifts annual market growth by close to 0.6 percentage points.

Opportunities

Sensor Bearings for Advanced Vehicle Systems

Wheel bearings with built in speed and load sensors feed data to anti lock brakes, stability control and driver assistance systems. As automated driving features spread, carmakers want hub units that also measure wheel forces, giving bearing makers a way to sell higher value products.

Localized Supply in India, Mexico and Southeast Asia

Carmakers are adding plants in India, Mexico, Thailand and Indonesia to diversify supply away from single countries. Bearing makers that set up local plants close to these assembly lines can win new contracts and avoid tariffs, especially in two-wheelers and light commercial vehicles, which grow at 4.80% and 4.10% a year.
