Polyester is cementing its role as the carcass fiber of the radial tire

Radial Insights values the global Polyester Tire Cord market at USD 3.46 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 3.63 Billion in 2026 and USD 5.61 Billion by 2035 at a 4.95% CAGR, as car and SUV tire output grows in Asia (values in USD billion unless stated).

The Polyester Tire Cord market covers high-tenacity polyester (PET) industrial yarn made for tire reinforcement, the twisted and adhesive-dipped cord fabric woven from it, and single-end dipped cord sold to tire makers. It includes virgin and recycled PET grades and covers carcass ply, cap ply, overlay, bead and chafer uses. It excludes nylon 6 and nylon 66 tire cord, rayon, aramid, steel cord, bead wire, polyester used in hoses and belts, and general textile yarn.

Polyester holds this position because it offers low shrinkage and stable dimensions at a lower cost than rayon or aramid, which makes it the standard carcass material for radial passenger and light truck tires. Steel and textiles together make up about 18% of the materials in a passenger car tire, according to Continental, and polyester accounts for most of the textile share in radial car tires.

Asia Pacific (APAC) dominates with a 58.40% share in 2025, since most PET tire cord is spun and dipped in South Korea, China, Vietnam, India and Turkey's export hubs feeding Asian tire plants. Africa is the fastest growing region at a 5.50% CAGR from a small base, while recycled PET (rPET) cord is the fastest segment at a 14.60% CAGR as tire makers chase recycled content targets.

Supply is concentrated. HS Hyosung Advanced Materials says it holds about half of the global polyester tire cord market, and Kolon Industries ranks second with about 15% of the wider tire cord market, so pricing moves with a few suppliers' capacity decisions. This report tracks the Polyester Tire Cord market through 2035 by product form, grade, tire type, tire position and end use, across six regions.

Single-end dipped cord leads product form growth

Single-end dipped cord grows at 6.20% a year, faster than dipped tire cord fabric at 5.10% and greige polyester tire yarn at 4.40%. Single-end cord feeds automated strip-winding and cap-ply application lines that tire makers install in new plants, and it reduces fabric waste at the cutting stage. Kordsa added a second single-end cord dipping unit in Turkey to serve this demand. Greige yarn grows slower because more tire cord makers now dip in-house and sell finished fabric rather than yarn.

Recycled PET cord grows from a small base at the fastest rate

Recycled PET (rPET) cord expands at 14.60% a year. Continental's recycled PET yarn process, developed with OTIZ, turns used PET bottles into tire carcass yarn and cuts CO2 emissions by about 28% compared with fossil-based PET tire cord fabric, a figure verified by SGS. HMLS (high modulus, low shrinkage) polyester grows at 5.85%, carried by premium and EV tires that need tight dimensional control. Standard high-tenacity grades grow at 3.90% as HMLS and rPET take share.

Two-wheeler and SUV tires post the quickest tire-type gains

Two-wheeler tires grow at 5.60%, led by radialization of motorcycle tires in India and Southeast Asia. SUV and light truck tires grow at 5.30% as SUVs keep taking share of new car sales, and each SUV tire uses more carcass fabric than a compact car tire. Passenger car tires grow at 4.75%. Off-highway tires grow at 4.10%, and truck and bus tires at only 3.20%, since all-steel radial truck tires use little polyester.

Cap ply and overlay are the fastest tire positions

Cap ply and overlay uses grow at 6.90% a year. Nylon 66 still dominates cap ply, but hybrid and HMLS polyester constructions are gaining in cost-sensitive high-speed tires. Carcass ply, which accounts for most volume, grows at 4.80%. Bead and chafer uses grow at 4.20%.

Replacement tire production outpaces OE tire production

Polyester Tire Cord for replacement tire production grows at 5.15% a year versus 4.60% for OE tire production. Replacement tires outnumber OE tires by roughly three to one worldwide, and the growing car fleet in Asia and Africa adds replacement volume each year.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Recycled PET moves from pilot to production tires

In October 2025 Continental said ContiRe.Tex polyester from recycled bottles is used in the carcass of its UltraContact NXT tires, where one tire can use up to 15 bottles depending on size. Kordsa showed rPET tire cord fabric at Tire Technology Expo 2025 in Hannover in March 2025. We expect recycled grades to make up close to 10% of polyester tire cord volume by 2035, up from low single digits in 2025.

Formaldehyde-free adhesive dips replace RFL systems

Traditional resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex (RFL) dips are under pressure from chemical rules in Europe. Kordsa and Continental jointly presented the Cokoon formaldehyde-free bonding technology in March 2025, and Continental said in October 2025 that it is expanding its use. Dip chemistry is becoming a selling point in supplier tenders.

Capacity moves closer to tire plants in India and Vietnam

In January 2025 Kolon Industries announced a 30 billion won (about USD 20.5 million) project to lift its Vietnam tire cord capacity from 36,000 to 57,000 tonnes a year, with the expanded plant expected to run from 2027, partly by moving idle equipment from Nanjing. In November 2025 HS Hyosung Advanced Materials announced a USD 30 million polyester tire cord plant in Nagpur, India, on a 230,000 square meter site, with construction due by 2027.

Pricing power returns to cord suppliers

After two soft years, cord prices rose in 2026. Shinhan Investment Securities reported in August 2026 that HS Hyosung Advanced Materials lifted tire cord selling prices 17% quarter on quarter in Q2 2026 and that tire reinforcing materials earned 64.8 billion won in operating profit, up 82% from a year earlier.

Restraints and Challenges

High supplier concentration

With one supplier holding about half of global polyester tire cord supply and a second holding about 15% of the wider tire cord market, tire makers face limited bargaining power and concentration risk. Patent disputes between HS Hyosung and Kolon over tire cord technology have run in Korea and the US since 2022.

PTA and MEG feedstock price swings

PET yarn is made from purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and mono ethylene glycol (MEG), both tied to crude oil and paraxylene prices. Cord makers usually pass costs through with a lag of one or two quarters, which compresses margins when feedstock rises quickly.

Recycled content still costs more

Recycled PET bottle flake competes with food and textile buyers, and sorting, cleaning and repolymerizing it to tire-grade strength adds cost. Continental limits bottle sourcing to regions without closed bottle recycling loops (Continental, October 2025), which narrows the supply pool. The industry's Tire Industry Project definitions for renewable and recycled material, shared by ETRMA, now set how such content is counted. Continental's renewable and recycled material share averaged 26% in 2024 against a target of at least 40% within five years.

Tariffs and trade measures on tires and inputs

The US began collecting a 25% Section 232 tariff on imported automobile parts, including tires, on 3 May 2025, and extended 25% duties to medium and heavy truck parts from 1 November 2025. Tariffs on finished tires shift where tires are built, which can strand cord capacity tied to export-oriented tire plants.

Growth Drivers

Rising radial car and SUV tire output in Asia

Polyester is the default carcass ply for radial passenger and light truck tires. We estimate each passenger tire uses roughly 0.4 to 0.7 kilograms of textile reinforcement, and an SUV tire uses more. Asian tire capacity keeps expanding: Kolon's Vietnam expansion to 57,000 tonnes a year and Hyosung's Nagpur plant both target tire makers building new plants in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and India. Hyosung Advanced Materials reported 2024 consolidated sales of 3.3112 trillion won, with operating profit up 26.2% to 219.7 billion won, and analysts at NH Investment & Securities expected about a 10% operating margin for tire cord in 2025. We estimate radial car and SUV tire growth contributes about +1.4 percentage points to the Polyester Tire Cord CAGR.

Recycled and lower-carbon material targets at tire makers

Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone and Goodyear have all published targets to raise renewable and recycled material shares in tires. Continental reported a 26% average in 2024 and aims for at least 40% within five years. Swapping virgin PET for rPET in the carcass is one of the fastest ways to raise that share without changing tire performance, since the polymer is chemically the same. Continental says one tire can carry up to 15 recycled bottles, and Kordsa and other suppliers now offer rPET fabric commercially. We expect these programs to add roughly +0.7% a year to market value, because rPET cord sells at a premium to virgin grades.

Capacity shift toward India and Southeast Asia

Tire makers want cord supply close to their plants to cut freight and lead time and to meet local content rules. HS Hyosung Advanced Materials said in November 2025 that local tire cord demand in India is steadily increasing, and its USD 30 million Nagpur plant will be its first in the country. India's SRF Limited already supplies polyester and nylon tire cord to Indian tire makers such as Apollo Tyres and MRF. As tire output in India, Vietnam and Thailand grows faster than in Europe and North America, regional cord plants capture new demand that would otherwise be imported. This shift is worth about +0.5% on the CAGR through 2035.

Opportunities

EV tire constructions

Electric vehicles need tires that carry more weight with low rolling resistance and low noise. Kordsa's REV Technologies brand targets EV tire reinforcement, and HMLS polyester with tighter shrinkage control is gaining in EV carcass designs. Suppliers that qualify grades with tire makers' EV programs early can win multi-year supply.

Chemical recycling of PET

Enzymatic and glycolysis-based PET recycling could supply tire-grade polymer from colored or mixed bottles and textiles that mechanical recycling cannot use, widening the rPET feedstock base after 2028.

Asia Pacific (APAC) supplies most of the world's polyester tire cord

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 58.40% share of the Polyester Tire Cord market, worth USD 2,020.64 Million in 2025, and should reach USD 3,402.78 Million in 2035 at a 5.35% CAGR. South Korea, China, Vietnam and India host most Asia Pacific capacity. Kolon's Vietnam plant will reach 57,000 tonnes a year in 2027, and Hyosung's Nagpur plant adds Indian capacity the same year.

North America

North America accounts for 13.60% of 2025 revenue, or USD 470.56 Million, rising to USD 716.90 Million by 2035 at a 4.30% CAGR. Tire plants in the US South and Mexico draw cord from Kordsa's Chattanooga, Tennessee site, Firestone Fibers & Textiles and imports. Tariffs on imported tires since May 2025 encourage more North American tire production, which supports local cord demand.

Europe

Europe holds a 16.20% share, worth USD 560.52 Million in 2025, and grows to USD 825.73 Million in 2035 at a 3.95% CAGR. Turkey, Czechia and Germany are the main European production bases, with Kordsa in Izmit and Indorama's Kordarna Plus in Czechia. European demand leans toward HMLS and recycled grades because of tire makers' sustainability targets.

Latin America

Latin America represents a 5.90% share, or USD 204.14 Million in 2025, reaching USD 327.80 Million by 2035 at a 4.85% CAGR. Brazil is the main Latin American market, with tire plants run by Pirelli, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Michelin and Continental, and Kordsa operates a cord plant there.

Middle East

The Middle East holds a 3.40% share, worth USD 117.64 Million in 2025, growing to USD 195.30 Million in 2035 at a 5.20% CAGR. New tire projects in Saudi Arabia, including plans backed by the Public Investment Fund, could lift Middle East cord demand later in the decade.

Africa

Africa holds a 2.50% share, or USD 86.50 Million in 2025, and rises to USD 147.75 Million in 2035 at a 5.50% CAGR, the fastest regional rate. African demand comes from tire plants in South Africa, Egypt and Morocco and is mostly met by imported fabric.
