ABS adoption in Asian commuter bikes is turning motorcycle braking into a higher-value, electronics-led market

Motorcycle braking systems represented a USD 7.46 Billion global market in 2025; Radial Insights forecasts USD 7.94 Billion in 2026 and USD 13.87 Billion by 2035, a 6.40% CAGR. Growth outpaces two-wheeler volumes because safety rules and buyer preference are moving commuter models from drum brakes to discs with anti-lock control.

This motorcycle braking systems market study covers brake hardware and control systems fitted to motorcycles and scooters: disc and drum brakes, calipers, brake discs, master cylinders and lines, brake pads and shoes, combined braking systems (CBS) and single-channel, dual-channel and cornering ABS modulators with their control units. It includes original equipment and aftermarket replacement. Bicycles, e-bikes with pedal assist, three-wheelers, all-terrain vehicles and brake fluid are excluded.

Electric two-wheelers are the fastest-growing segment at 11.20% a year, because their higher curb weight and regenerative braking push makers toward disc brakes and electronic control as standard. Single-channel ABS grows at 9.60% as the entry point for regulation-driven fitment. Africa is the fastest-growing region at 7.64% a year, while Asia Pacific (APAC) generates most revenue.

Regulation sets the pace of the motorcycle braking systems market. India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways published a draft in June 2025 proposing ABS on all new two-wheelers from January 2026, although reports in November 2025 said the rule for models up to 125cc could be deferred. Singapore will require ABS on all motorcycles from April 2027, and Endurance Technologies is adding 1.2 million units of annual ABS capacity in India by September 2026.

Disc brakes replace drums across commuter motorcycles and scooters

Disc brakes grow at 7.30% a year and already dominate mid-size and premium motorcycles; the main source of new volume is the shift of commuter motorcycles and scooters from front drum to front disc. Drum brakes grow at 2.40%, held up by rear wheels on low-cost commuter bikes in India, Southeast Asia and Africa, where price sensitivity remains high. Endurance Technologies' Chennai plant, sized for 3 million disc brake assemblies and 4 million brake discs a year, shows how suppliers are preparing for the transition.

Single-channel ABS is the fastest-moving system as rules reach smaller bikes

Conventional brakes without electronic or linked control grow at 2.20%, and combined braking systems grow at 4.10%, since CBS was India's minimum requirement for models up to 125cc from 2019 but is gradually being displaced by ABS. Single-channel ABS grows fastest at 9.60%, as it is the cheapest way for makers to meet ABS requirements on commuter models. Dual-channel and cornering ABS grows at 8.40%, supported by mid-size models; Endurance scheduled dual-channel ABS production for Bajaj Auto to start in June 2026, with sales potential of 120,000 units a year.

ABS modulators and control units capture the largest gain in value per bike

ABS modulators and control units grow at 9.10%, the fastest component rate, because each unit adds far more value than mechanical parts. Brake discs grow at 6.70% and calipers at 6.20% as disc fitment spreads. Brake pads and shoes grow at 5.60%, driven by the large installed base of two-wheelers needing regular replacement, while master cylinders and lines grow at 5.10%.

Commuter motorcycles add the most new braking content while premium bikes grow slowly

Commuter motorcycles up to 125cc grow at 7.20% because they carry the largest upgrade gap between drum or CBS brakes and ABS. Scooters grow at 6.90%, supported by urban demand and disc-brake fitment on newer models. Mid-size motorcycles from 126cc to 500cc grow at 6.10%, and premium motorcycles above 500cc grow at 4.30%, since they already use dual-channel or cornering ABS and their volumes are under pressure in Europe and North America.

Electric two-wheelers specify more advanced braking from launch

Braking demand from combustion two-wheelers grows at 5.30%, while electric two-wheelers grow at 11.20%. Electric models are heavier for their size and use regenerative braking that must be blended with friction brakes, so makers often specify discs and ABS as standard. In Kenya, 25,277 of 168,286 new motorcycles registered in 2025 were electric.

OEM fitment outgrows the aftermarket as content per new bike rises

OEM supply grows at 6.70% a year, faster than the aftermarket at 5.50%, because ABS modulators, discs and calipers are mainly sold with new vehicles. The aftermarket remains large, built on brake pads, shoes and discs for a global fleet of several hundred million two-wheelers.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Indian suppliers are building ABS capacity ahead of regulation

In May 2026, Endurance Technologies announced a plant expansion adding 1.2 million units of annual ABS capacity by September 2026, taking total capacity to 1.84 million units from 640,000. It also scheduled dual-channel ABS production for Bajaj Auto from June 2026, with a second program of similar size planned for the second quarter of fiscal 2027. Suppliers are investing even though the final timing of India's broader ABS rule remains under discussion.

ABS rules are spreading to smaller motorcycles

Motorcycle braking performance is set internationally under UN Regulation No. 78, maintained by the UNECE World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29). The European Union has required ABS on motorcycles above 125cc since 2016 and India since 2018. In June 2025, India's road transport ministry proposed extending ABS to all new two-wheelers from January 2026, and Bosch noted in November 2025 that Singapore will require ABS on all motorcycles, including those under 125cc, from April 2027.

Mature markets are shifting toward smaller, lighter motorcycles

The Motorcycle Industry Council reported in February 2026 that United States new motorcycle sales fell 8% in 2025, while sport bikes rose 13%, with all growth from models under 750cc, and touring bikes fell 13%. ACEM data show European registrations in five key markets fell 12.9% in 2025. Smaller bikes use lighter calipers and single or dual-channel ABS rather than the most expensive cornering systems.

Stability control and electronic braking reach the mid-range

Bosch marked 30 years of motorcycle ABS at EICMA in November 2025, noting that its Motorcycle Stability Control evaluates vehicle dynamics up to 100 times per second and that its research suggests such systems could prevent or mitigate 30% of injury-causing crashes in Germany. In November 2025, Bosch also launched a 3 kW in-hub drive control unit with regenerative braking and a 6 kW integrated electric drive at the same show. Suppliers are now packaging these functions for mid-size models at lower cost.

Restraints and Challenges

Cost sensitivity in entry-level two-wheelers

Indian two-wheeler makers warned in 2025 that mandatory ABS could add more than INR 5,000 to the price of entry-level motorcycles and scooters. In November 2025, reports said the government was considering deferring the requirement for models up to 125cc, which could delay the largest single source of ABS volume.

Weak premium motorcycle demand in Europe and North America

According to ACEM, motorcycle registrations in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom fell to 1,002,848 units in 2025 from 1,150,852, with Germany down 35.7%. United States new motorcycle sales fell 8%, reducing demand for high-value braking systems.

Supplier margin pressure

Brembo reported preliminary 2025 revenue of EUR 3,704 million in January 2026, down 1.6% at constant exchange rates, and expects 2026 sales to be roughly flat. Flat volumes in premium segments limit pricing power for braking suppliers serving European brands.

Market volatility in emerging regions

Turkey's motorcycle registrations fell 42.3% in the first quarter of 2025 to 143,029 units, according to the Motorcycle Industry Association (MOTED), because of rising costs and tighter credit. Sharp swings in demand make capacity planning difficult for brake suppliers.

Growth Drivers

Regulation extending ABS to commuter two-wheelers

The largest pool of two-wheelers without ABS is in South and Southeast Asia, where commuter motorcycles and scooters up to 125cc make up most sales. India's June 2025 draft proposed ABS on all new two-wheelers, and even with the timing for small models under review, makers and suppliers are preparing: Endurance Technologies is lifting ABS capacity to 1.84 million units a year and building disc brake capacity of 3 million assemblies in Chennai. Singapore's requirement from April 2027 adds another rule for small motorcycles. Each step from drum or CBS to single-channel ABS multiplies braking content per vehicle, since the upgrade adds a front disc, a modulator, wheel-speed sensors and a control unit. India alone sold millions of commuter two-wheelers in fiscal 2025-26, so even partial ABS adoption in this class creates demand well beyond today's installed supplier capacity. Radial Insights estimates that regulation-driven ABS fitment adds about +1.6% of annual growth to the motorcycle braking systems market through 2035.

Growing two-wheeler fleets in Latin America, Africa and Asia

Two-wheelers remain the main form of motorized transport for hundreds of millions of people. In Brazil, Abraciclo reported motorcycle production of about 1.98 million units in 2025, up 13.3%, and record registrations of 2.19 million, up 17.1%. In Kenya, 168,286 new motorcycles were registered in 2025. Delivery services and ride-hailing on motorcycles keep utilization high, which increases wear on pads, shoes and discs and supports both OEM and aftermarket demand. Africa adds further volume: motorcycle taxis in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania cover high daily distances on rough roads. Radial Insights credits fleet expansion in emerging markets with roughly +1.0 percentage point of yearly market growth.

Electrification of scooters and commuter motorcycles

Electric two-wheelers often launch with front discs, combined or anti-lock braking and electronic integration with regenerative braking. Kenya registered 25,277 new electric motorcycles in 2025, and Bosch introduced a 3 kW in-hub drive control unit with regenerative braking at EICMA 2025, aimed at compact urban vehicles. As electric models gain share in India, China, Southeast Asia and Africa, their richer braking specifications lift average content per vehicle. Electric scooter makers also tend to offer connected features, and several use the same control unit to manage ABS, traction control and regenerative braking, which raises the electronic value of each braking system. Because many electric brands are new to the market, they often source complete braking packages from a single supplier rather than buying parts separately. This shift contributes about +0.8% to the annual growth rate of the market.

Opportunities

Low-cost single-channel ABS for small motorcycles

Suppliers that can deliver compact single-channel ABS at a price that fits entry-level motorcycles stand to win large contracts once rules are finalized in India and adopted elsewhere in Asia.

Integrated braking for electric two-wheelers

Combining ABS, regenerative braking and traction control in one control unit offers electric two-wheeler makers lower cost and weight, an opening for Bosch, Continental, Endurance and new Asian entrants.

A handful of ABS specialists and regional brake makers control most motorcycle braking supply

The motorcycle braking systems market is split between global electronics suppliers that dominate ABS, premium brake specialists serving high-performance models, and regional manufacturers that supply calipers, discs and drums to high-volume commuter brands in Asia. Radial Insights estimates that the five largest suppliers hold close to half of global revenue, with ABS concentrated among even fewer companies. Competition turns on ABS cost, weight and packaging for small motorcycles, and on local production close to high-volume makers in India, China and Southeast Asia.

ABS and electronic braking leaders

Bosch pioneered motorcycle ABS, with the first production application on the Kawasaki GPZ1100 in 1995, and today supplies ABS and Motorcycle Stability Control to many global brands. Continental supplies motorcycle ABS units, mainly to European and Asian manufacturers. Nissin Kogyo, now part of Astemo, provides ABS and hydraulic brakes for Japanese motorcycle makers.

Premium brake specialists

Brembo, with 2025 revenue of EUR 3,704 million across cars and motorcycles, is known for high-performance calipers, discs and master cylinders used in racing and premium motorcycles, and sells its ByBre brand for smaller bikes in Asia. J.Juan, Brembo's Spanish unit, supplies brake lines and hydraulic components to European and Asian brands.

Asian volume suppliers

Endurance Technologies of India supplies disc brakes, CBS and ABS to Bajaj Auto and other Indian makers, with ABS capacity rising to 1.84 million units a year. Brakes India, Tokico (Astemo) and a group of Chinese and Taiwanese brake makers supply calipers, discs and drums at scale for commuter motorcycles and scooters.
