EV coolant lines and recycled-content rules are pulling TPV beyond its weatherseal base

Sales of Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPV) totaled USD 2.84 Billion in 2025 and should reach USD 3.02 Billion in 2026 and USD 5.29 Billion by 2035, according to Radial Insights, a 6.42% CAGR for 2025-2035. The market stood near USD 2.23 Billion in 2020.

A TPV is a blend in which a rubber phase, most often EPDM, is fully crosslinked while being mixed into a thermoplastic matrix, usually polypropylene. The result behaves like vulcanized rubber in use but can be extruded, injection molded and reground like a plastic. That combination lets automakers and Tier 1 suppliers replace thermoset EPDM in glass-run channels, belt-line seals, air ducts, boots and grommets, cutting cycle times and scrap.

Our study covers EPDM/PP, NBR/PP and other dynamically vulcanized grades sold as compounds by producers and compounders. It excludes styrenic block copolymer TPE (TPS), thermoplastic polyolefin blends without dynamic vulcanization (TPO), copolyester (TPC) and polyurethane (TPU) elastomers, and finished seals and hoses. Values are at compound selling prices.

The Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPV) market is led by Celanese, which owns the Santoprene brand, followed by Mitsui Chemicals (Milastomer), Teknor Apex (Sarlink), LCY Chemical and a growing group of Chinese producers such as Shandong Dawn Polymer. Light vehicle production of 92.9 million units in 2025, per S&P Global Mobility, keeps automotive the dominant buyer.

Recycled and mass-balance certified grades are the fastest segment at an 11.20% CAGR, and Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest region at 7.35% a year.

EPDM/PP dominates, while specialty chemistries grow faster

EPDM/PP grades account for most tonnage because they match the weathering and compression set of EPDM seals at lower processing cost. Their 6.20% rate follows vehicle output and window-seal content. NBR/PP grades grow at 6.85% where oil and fuel contact rule out EPDM. Other TPV types, including butyl-based grades for low gas permeability and silicone-based TPVs for medical and high-heat parts, rise fastest at 7.30% from a smaller base.

Extrusion leads because seals and hoses are continuous profiles

Extrusion grows at 6.55% as coolant hoses join glass-run channels and belt-line seals as extruded TPV parts. Injection molding, at 6.30%, covers grommets, boots, plugs and soft-touch overmolding. Blow molding grows at 5.90%, mostly for air ducts and CV-style protective boots, where competing copolyester grades hold part of the demand.

Coolant hoses and fluid lines outpace every other application at 9.60%

Weatherseals remain the anchor application but grow at only 5.80% because seal content per car is close to its ceiling. Under-the-hood parts and air ducts grow at 6.10%. Coolant hoses and fluid lines jump to 9.60% because battery electric and hybrid vehicles need many more thermal-management lines than combustion cars, and recyclable TPV hoses avoid the curing step needed for EPDM hose. Industrial and building seals grow at 5.40%, consumer and medical goods at 6.30%, and wire and cable at 6.90%.

Certified recycled and mass-balance grades grow at 11.20%

Virgin grades still supply most demand at a 5.95% rate. Recycled and mass-balance grades, such as Teknor Apex's Sarlink Rx 4100 with up to 30% post-consumer content and ISCC PLUS certified lines at LCY and Teknor Apex, grow at 11.20% as European recycled-plastic quotas approach.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Electric vehicle thermal management is creating a new hose market

In June 2026 Teknor Apex reported multi-year validation of Sarlink TPV grades 4100, 6100 and Rx 4100, plus a 25585 tie layer, for coolant hoses in new energy vehicles. The company noted that such vehicles use 25 to 45 coolant hoses compared with 8 to 15 in combustion cars. Extruder maker Maillefer partnered on the process, showing that the supply chain for TPV hose is being built now.

Circularity certification has become a selling point

LCY Chemical received ISCC PLUS certification in January 2025 for TPEs and recyclable TPV made in Taiwan and Huizhou, and Teknor Apex's Sarlink TPV and Monprene TPE plants in Belgium and Germany were certified around the same time. Cooper Standard's FlexiCore body seal, made entirely of TPV and polypropylene, points to all-thermoplastic seal systems that can be recycled as a single material family.

Repeated price increases from the market leader

Celanese raised Santoprene TPV prices by USD 0.20 per kg in Asia and the Americas and EUR 0.18 per kg in EMEA from June 2025, again by up to EUR 0.25 per kg from April 2026, and by EUR 0.30 per kg in EMEA from June 2026. Each round passes higher polypropylene, EPDM and energy costs to compounders and seal makers.

Trade fairs are shifting focus to Asia and light-effect automotive grades

Mitsui Chemicals showed Milastomer at K 2025 in Duesseldorf in October 2025, while Kraiburg TPE announced in January 2026 that it would launch automotive light-effect and polypropylene-adhesion grades at CHINAPLAS 2026 in Shanghai in April 2026. Suppliers increasingly debut automotive grades in China, where most EVs are built.

Restraints and Challenges

Flat light vehicle output caps seal volumes

S&P Global Mobility puts 2025 light vehicle production at 92.9 million units and expects 92.6 million in 2026, essentially flat. With weatherseal content per vehicle near saturation, TPV growth in seals depends on share gains from thermoset EPDM rather than on more cars being built. We estimate this caps the weatherseal segment about 0.6 points below the market average.

Margin pressure at producers and compounders

HEXPOL reported 2025 sales of SEK 19,324 million against SEK 20,437 million in 2024, with lower sales to automotive customers. Celanese booked a USD 1.3 billion operating loss in its Engineered Materials segment in the third quarter of 2025 because of impairments, as shown in its SEC filing, and sold its Micromax unit to raise cash. Weak margins can slow investment in new TPV capacity outside China.

Recycled-content rules raise qualification costs

The EU Council formally adopted the End-of-Life Vehicles regulation in June 2026, setting at least 15% recycled plastic in new vehicles by year 6 after entry into force and 25% by year 10, with at least 20% of that from end-of-life vehicles, according to the Council press release. Recycled TPV must still pass compression set, UV and odor tests, and the closed-loop share requires collection systems that do not yet exist at scale.

Competition from other thermoplastic elastomers

Copolyester elastomers dominate many CV joint boots and some air ducts, styrenic TPEs win soft-touch interior parts, and EPDM thermoset remains cheaper for some dense seal profiles. TPV producers need to prove total system cost, not polymer price, to win each application.

Growth Drivers

Electrified vehicle thermal management

The IEA's Global EV Outlook 2026 reports more than 20 million electric cars sold in 2025, about a quarter of new car sales, and projects about 23 million, a 28% share, in 2026. Each battery electric vehicle needs coolant circuits for the battery, motor, inverter and cabin heat pump. Teknor Apex's June 2026 Sarlink validation cites 25 to 45 coolant hoses per new energy vehicle, two to three times the count in a combustion car. TPV hoses can be extruded and cut without a vulcanization oven and use multilayer tie layers to bond to polyamide barrier layers. We estimate thermal-management lines add about +1.2% of annual growth to the TPV market through 2035, the largest single driver. China, where nearly 55% of 2025 EV sales took place, captures most of this gain first. Hose suppliers that qualify on one Chinese battery platform often carry the same part number to export models, which spreads the gain to Europe within two or three model years.

Recycled plastic quotas in Europe

The ELV regulation agreed in December 2025 and adopted in June 2026 sets 15% and then 25% recycled plastic targets for new vehicles sold in the EU. TPV is one of the few rubber-like materials that can be reground and reprocessed, which gives seal and hose makers a route to count recycled content in parts that are now thermoset EPDM. Certified mass-balance grades from Teknor Apex and LCY, and Celanese's Santoprene range, are positioned to serve these targets. We expect recycled-content rules to lift the market by roughly 0.7 percentage points a year after 2028, with the effect concentrated in Europe and in global platforms built to EU specifications. Automakers selling in Europe are already asking seal suppliers to quote recycled-content options for programs launching after 2028, which pulls certified TPV into sourcing decisions years before the quota applies.

Thermoset-to-thermoplastic conversion in seals and boots

Seal makers such as Cooper Standard are moving to all-thermoplastic designs: its FlexiCore body seal uses only TPV and polypropylene, cutting weight and allowing scrap to be reground. Conversion removes curing ovens, reduces energy use and shortens line changeovers, savings that matter as HEXPOL and other compounders report weaker automotive volumes. Mitsui Chemicals and Kraiburg TPE are pushing grades with better adhesion to polypropylene so that seals and trims can be co-extruded. We estimate continued conversion contributes around +0.8% to annual market growth, spread across weatherseals, grommets, air ducts and industrial gaskets.

Opportunities

Charging infrastructure and cable jacketing

Wire and cable grows at 6.90%, with EV charging cables, connectors and solar cable jackets needing flexible, flame-retardant and weather-resistant compounds. Celanese's separate pricing for halogenated flame-retardant Santoprene grades shows that specialty cable grades carry a premium worth pursuing.

Localized supply for Chinese and Indian automakers

Chinese producers such as Shandong Dawn Polymer already supply Asian plants of global automakers. Suppliers that pair local compounding with global grade specifications can win share as Chinese EV brands expand assembly abroad.

Asia Pacific holds nearly 45% of TPV demand and grows fastest on EV production

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) takes a 44.80% share of 2025 TPV sales, worth USD 1,272.32 Million. APAC demand reaches USD 2,585.93 Million by 2035 at a 7.35% CAGR. China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, per OICA, and accounted for nearly 55% of global electric car sales, per the IEA. LCY Chemical produces TPV in Taiwan and Huizhou, Shandong Dawn Polymer in Longkou, and Mitsui Chemicals in Japan, giving APAC buyers deep local supply.

Europe

Europe holds a 24.30% share, or USD 690.12 Million, in 2025. European TPV revenue rises to USD 1,167.70 Million by 2035 at a 5.40% CAGR. Europe accounted for 28% of global electric car sales in 2025, and the ELV regulation adopted in June 2026 sets the world's first recycled-plastic quota for vehicles. Teknor Apex runs ISCC PLUS certified TPV plants in Belgium and Germany, and Kraiburg TPE is based in Waldkraiburg, Germany.

North America

North America represents a 22.10% share, valued at USD 627.64 Million in 2025. North American demand climbs to USD 1,092.60 Million by 2035 at a 5.70% CAGR. The US took just under 10% of global electric car sales in 2025, and pickups and SUVs carry long seal profiles. Celanese is headquartered in Dallas, Teknor Apex in Rhode Island and Cooper Standard in Michigan, and Celanese raised Americas Santoprene prices by USD 0.10 per pound in April 2026.

Latin America

Latin America accounts for a 4.60% share, worth USD 130.64 Million in 2025. Latin American revenue grows to USD 236.17 Million by 2035 at a 6.10% CAGR. Mexico's assembly plants, which build vehicles largely for the US under USMCA rules, and Brazil's flex-fuel car industry drive seal and hose demand in Latin America.

Middle East

The Middle East holds a 2.70% share, or USD 76.68 Million, in 2025, rising to USD 141.26 Million by 2035 at a 6.30% CAGR. Building and construction seals in the Gulf, and new vehicle assembly in Saudi Arabia such as Lucid's plant at King Abdullah Economic City, support Middle East demand.

Africa

Africa holds a 1.50% share, or USD 42.60 Million, in 2025, reaching USD 82.25 Million by 2035 at a 6.80% CAGR. Vehicle plants in Morocco, including Renault at Tangier and Stellantis at Kenitra, and in South Africa supply Europe and drive African demand for TPV seals.

Celanese sets the price, while certified and Chinese suppliers gain ground

The Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPV) market is moderately concentrated. Dynamic vulcanization requires twin-screw know-how, controlled cure chemistry and long automaker approval lists, so a handful of brands supply most global platforms, while regional compounders compete on price and service.

Global brand owners

Celanese owns Santoprene, the best-known TPV brand, and sells it through its Engineered Materials segment, which earned adjusted EBIT of USD 720 million in 2025. Its repeated price notices show its role as price setter. Mitsui Chemicals sells Milastomer, strong with Japanese automakers, and Teknor Apex sells Sarlink from plants in the USA, Singapore and Belgium, now with a focus on EV coolant hose grades.

Asian challengers

LCY Chemical, with ISCC PLUS certified production in Taiwan and Huizhou, and Shandong Dawn Polymer, whose Dawnprene TPV is distributed in Europe by Lehmann & Voss, offer competitive pricing and local supply to Asian plants of global OEMs. Kumho Polychem, a major EPDM producer, supplies the rubber phase used by many TPV compounders in Korea and China.

TPE compounders

Kraiburg TPE, HEXPOL TPE and Avient supply a broad range of thermoplastic elastomer compounds, including TPV-based and competing styrenic grades, with strength in custom colors, adhesion grades and fast sampling. HEXPOL's 15.2% EBITA margin in 2025 shows compounding remains profitable despite weaker automotive volumes.

Seal and hose system makers

Cooper Standard is the clearest example of a buyer that shapes demand, with its FlexiCore all-TPV body seal. Seal makers decide whether a part moves from EPDM to TPV, so producers that co-develop profiles with them win long platform contracts. We expect the competitive gap through 2035 to be set by recycled-content capability, EV hose approvals and the ability to supply China at local cost. Brand owners that combine all three will hold pricing power even as Chinese capacity expands.
