Plug-in Hybrids Keep Growing at 5.62% a Year as Longer Electric Range Wins Policy Support

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles generated USD 226.80 billion in new-vehicle sales worldwide in 2025, rising to USD 239.55 billion in 2026 and USD 391.84 billion by 2035 at a 5.62% CAGR, according to Radial Insights. Our estimate multiplies registrations by market and body type by average transaction prices.

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicles market in this report covers new passenger cars and light vehicles that combine an engine with a battery that can be charged from the grid, including extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) whose engine only generates electricity. It excludes conventional self-charging hybrids, mild hybrids, battery electric vehicles, commercial trucks and buses, used vehicles and charging equipment.

The IEA's Global EV Outlook 2026 reported that battery electric models took 65% of the more than 20 million electric cars sold in 2025, which leaves about 35%, or roughly 7 million units, for plug-in hybrids and EREVs. China remained the core of the market: CPCA counted 3.40 million plug-in hybrid and 1.17 million EREV retail sales in 2025. In the European Union, ACEA recorded 1,015,887 plug-in hybrid registrations, a 9.4% share.

Models with more than 100 km of electric range are the fastest-growing segment at 10.38% a year, helped by China's rule that from 2026 a plug-in hybrid needs over 100 km of electric range to keep new energy vehicle status. Africa is the fastest-growing region at 13.60%. Asia Pacific (APAC) holds the largest share at 58.40%.

Policy has turned more favorable in Europe and Latin America and less favorable in North America. The European Commission's December 2025 proposal would let plug-in hybrids stay on sale after 2035, while Stellantis stopped building its Jeep and Chrysler plug-in hybrids for North America in January 2026 after US tax credits ended.

Extended-range models outgrow conventional plug-in hybrids

EREVs grow at 7.04% against 5.18% for conventional plug-in hybrids. Adamas Intelligence found that EREV packs averaged 39.3 kWh in the first half of 2025, nearly twice the 20.3 kWh of other plug-in hybrids, so each EREV carries more value. Li Auto, AITO and Leapmotor built their ranges around this layout, and Western brands are now adding range extenders to large SUVs and pickups.

Pickups and SUVs lead body-style growth

Pickup trucks grow fastest at 9.74%, followed by SUVs and crossovers at 6.08% and MPVs at 5.86%, while sedans and hatchbacks grow at only 3.42%. Ford began building the Ranger plug-in hybrid at Silverton, South Africa, in March 2025 for export to Europe. SUVs remain the largest body style, led by BYD's Song family and the Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid.

Short-range models decline as rules tighten

Models with more than 100 km of electric range grow at 10.38% and those with 50 to 100 km at 4.92%, while models below 50 km shrink at -3.86% a year. China's 100 km rule from January 2026 and the Euro 6e-bis utility factor, which raises the official CO2 of short-range plug-in hybrids in Europe, both push makers toward bigger batteries. Adamas reported the average plug-in hybrid pack rose to 24.1 kWh in the first half of 2025, up 40% from 17.2 kWh in 2022.

Mass-market models grow faster than premium ones

Mass-market plug-in hybrids grow at 6.24%, ahead of premium at 5.11% and luxury at 4.36%. Chinese brands sell long-range plug-in hybrids at prices close to petrol cars, while European premium brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are shifting more of their mix to battery electric models.

Fleets grow faster than private buyers

Corporate and rental fleets grow at 6.46% against 5.37% for private buyers. Company-car tax rules in several European countries still favor plug-in hybrids, and rental firms like the flexibility of an engine for long trips.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Electric range keeps getting longer

China told carmakers in October 2025 that from 1 January 2026 a plug-in hybrid needs more than 100 km of electric range to keep new energy vehicle tax status, up from 43 km. Toyota revealed the 2026 RAV4 plug-in hybrid in May 2025 with an estimated 50 miles of electric range, up from 42. Average pack sizes have risen as a result, and many Chinese models now exceed 150 km.

Europe turns back to plug-in hybrids

ACEA data show EU plug-in hybrid registrations rose to a 9.4% share in 2025 from 7.2% a year earlier, with Spain up 111.7%, Italy up 86.6% and Germany up 62.3%. Benchmark, formerly Rho Motion, put European plug-in hybrid growth at 38% in 2025, faster than battery electric growth of 31%. Chinese brands helped: Chinese hybrid exports to the EU tripled to USD 7.5 billion in the first half of 2026, because the 2024 EU duties applied only to battery electric cars.

Flex-fuel plug-in hybrids in Latin America

BYD's plant in Camaçari, Brazil, opened in October 2025, and in August 2026 it launched the Song Pro, the first Brazilian-made flex-fuel plug-in hybrid, with 60 to 120 km of electric range. The IEA notes plug-in hybrids outsold battery electric cars in Brazil in 2025 and that Mexican plug-in hybrid sales rose about sevenfold.

Scrutiny of real-world emissions

The ICCT reported in June 2026 that European plug-in hybrids emit about five times their official CO2, and a September 2026 study found the real electric driving share was about 21% rather than the 80% assumed in official tests. These findings support stricter utility factors and favor long-range models that drivers actually charge.

Restraints and Challenges

Tighter CO2 accounting in Europe

Under the Euro 6e-bis rules, a new utility factor applied to new plug-in hybrid types from January 2025 and to all new plug-in hybrids from January 2026, raising their official CO2 values. A further step is planned for 2027. This reduces the compliance value of short-range models, and ACEA's 2025 registration data show makers already shifting toward longer-range versions to keep up.

Loss of US incentives

The federal clean vehicle credit ended for vehicles acquired after 30 September 2025. Stellantis ended production of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrids for North America in January 2026, removing some of the best-selling US models.

Trade restrictions on Chinese exports

In October 2026, China and the EU agreed steps to curb the rapid growth of Chinese hybrid exports, which had tripled in the first half of the year. Quotas or price floors would slow the cheapest route into European plug-in hybrid demand and raise average prices.

Falling battery electric prices

As battery electric cars approach the price of plug-in hybrids, the case for carrying two powertrains weakens. The IEA expects plug-in hybrids to fall from about 35% of available electric models in 2026 to about 30% by 2030, and China's plug-in hybrid growth of 8.8% in 2025 already trailed battery electric growth of 24.4%.

Growth Drivers

Charging gaps make plug-in hybrids the practical first step

Many buyers want lower fuel costs but cannot rely on public charging for long trips. Plug-in hybrids cover daily commuting on electricity and use the engine for longer drives. This is why they dominate electric sales where charging is thin: the IEA reports that plug-in hybrids made up about half of Latin American electric car sales in 2025, more than 70% in South Africa and about 60% in Mexico. In Brazil, where Chinese-built models took about 80% of plug-in hybrid sales, BYD now builds flex-fuel plug-in hybrids that can run on ethanol. Ford's Ranger plug-in hybrid, built in South Africa since March 2025, shows the same logic in pickups. We estimate that charging-constrained demand adds about 2.0 percentage points to annual growth in the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles market through 2035.

EREVs and long-range models win Chinese family buyers

China accounted for most global plug-in hybrid value in 2025. CPCA data show 3.40 million plug-in hybrid and 1.17 million EREV retail sales, and BYD alone sold 2,288,709 plug-in hybrids. Large family SUVs with range extenders, such as Li Auto's L series and the AITO M8 and M9 from Seres and Huawei, sell at higher prices than most battery electric cars. Seres sold 472,269 new energy vehicles in 2025, up 10.6%, with AITO above 420,000. The 100 km electric range rule from 2026 raises battery content per vehicle and therefore average selling prices. Long-range Chinese demand is worth roughly +1.7% of yearly value growth over the forecast period.

European policy keeps plug-in hybrids on sale after 2035

The European Commission proposed in December 2025 to cut the 2035 CO2 target for new cars to 90% instead of 100%, which allows plug-in hybrids and range extenders to remain on sale if makers offset the remaining emissions. EU plug-in hybrid registrations reached 1,015,887 in 2025, up from a 7.2% share to 9.4%, and Volvo Cars sold 171,464 plug-in hybrids, about 24% of its 710,042 total. BMW and Mercedes-Benz each sold close to 200,000 plug-in hybrids in 2025, mainly in Europe. Longer product life cycles for plug-in hybrid platforms give makers more time to earn back their investment. The European policy shift lifts our forecast by close to 1.2% a year.

Opportunities

Range-extended pickups and large SUVs

Pickups and full-size SUVs are hard to electrify fully because of towing loads and long trips. Range-extended versions with 150 km or more of electric range can serve buyers in North America, Australia and the Middle East who are not ready for battery electric trucks.

Flex-fuel and ethanol-compatible plug-in hybrids

Combining plug-in hybrid drives with ethanol or biofuel engines offers a lower-carbon option for Brazil, India and other markets with biofuel programs. BYD's Song Pro in Brazil is an early example that other makers can follow.
