SUVs Passed Half of Global Car Sales in 2025 and Head for USD 2.44 Trillion by 2035

New sport utility vehicles sold worldwide were worth USD 1,598.40 billion in 2025, and Radial Insights expects USD 1,667.61 billion in 2026 and USD 2,442.18 billion by 2035, a 4.33% CAGR. Our estimate multiplies new SUV registrations by market and size class by average transaction prices drawn from dealer and manufacturer data.

The sport utility vehicles market in this report covers new subcompact, compact, midsize and full-size SUVs and crossovers sold to private and fleet buyers, across gasoline, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric powertrains. It excludes pickup trucks, minivans and MPVs, used SUV sales, aftermarket parts and financing revenue. Where Indian data group SUVs and MPVs as utility vehicles, we remove the MPV share.

SUVs became the majority body style worldwide in 2025. An analysis of 149 markets by Motor1 counted almost 43 million SUV sales, up 6%, or 52% of global light-vehicle sales, while sedans, compacts and estates fell 2%. S&P Global Mobility put total light-vehicle sales at about 91.7 million for the year.

Battery-electric SUVs are the fastest-growing segment at 11.28% a year. The IEA reports that more than 55% of SUVs sold in China in 2025 were electric. Africa is the fastest-growing region at 5.66% from a small base, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds the largest share, 45.20%, led by China and India.

Price and policy shape the next decade. US tariffs of 25% on imported vehicles since April 2025, the EU's December 2025 proposal to soften its 2035 CO2 target, and China's renewed trade-in subsidy for 2026 all affect where SUVs are built and how they are powered. These policies matter most for compact models, which make up the bulk of global volume.

Compact SUVs grow fastest because they replace sedans and hatchbacks

Subcompact and compact SUVs grow at 4.86%, ahead of midsize at 4.12% and full-size at 3.18%. The five best-selling SUVs of 2025, led by the Toyota RAV4 at 1.16 million and the Tesla Model Y at 1.11 million, are all compact models. In the US, compact SUVs alone held 21% of new-vehicle sales in early 2025.

Battery-electric and plug-in SUVs lead powertrain growth

Battery-electric SUVs grow at 11.28% and plug-in hybrids at 8.94%. The IEA's Global EV Outlook 2026 found that SUVs made up more than 60% of electric car sales in China in 2025 and that large cars and SUVs were almost 70% of the global EV market. Hybrids grow at 7.36%, helped by models such as the sixth-generation RAV4 and the first hybrid Hyundai Palisade, while combustion-only SUVs grow at just 0.74%. Combustion SUVs still account for most units outside China, but their value grows slowly because tighter CO2 rules in Europe and fuel economy pressure in Asia move new launches to hybrid or electric versions.

Luxury SUVs edge ahead of mass-market models

Luxury SUVs grow at 4.95% and premium at 4.58%, against 4.21% for mass-market models. Buyers in the US, China and the Gulf continue to trade up to better-equipped trims and larger battery options. Luxury makers also add electric SUVs at the top of their ranges, where higher battery cost is easier to pass on to buyers.

All-wheel drive gains with electrification

All-wheel and four-wheel drive SUVs grow at 4.71% against 4.04% for two-wheel drive, because dual-motor electric layouts make all-wheel drive cheaper to offer.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

SUVs become the default body style

Motor1's 149-market study found SUV sales rose 6% to almost 43 million in 2025, passing half of light-vehicle sales for the first time. In Europe SUVs reached about 59% of new car sales in 2025, up from 41% in 2020, and in India utility vehicles took 67% of passenger vehicle sales in FY2026.

Electric SUVs at price parity in China

The IEA reported that battery-electric SUV prices in China fell almost 10% in 2024 and that more than half of electric SUVs sold for less than the average petrol SUV. Tesla's six-seat Model Y L, launched in China in August 2025 at RMB 339,000, and Geely's Xingyue L and Boyue L show how crowded the segment has become.

Hybrids return as a bridge technology

Toyota revealed the sixth-generation RAV4 in May 2025, sold in more than 180 countries, with a new hybrid system and its first Arene software platform. Hyundai priced the first hybrid Palisade from about USD 46,000 in November 2025, rated at 34 mpg combined, roughly 50% better than the V6. Japanese and Korean makers see hybrids as the lowest-risk path to lower fleet emissions in markets where charging networks remain thin.

Localization in response to tariffs

The US 25% tariff on imported vehicles, effective 3 April 2025, pushed brands to build SUVs in the US. Hyundai Motor Group raised its 2025-2028 US investment to USD 26 billion in August 2025, while Maruti Suzuki began exporting the e Vitara electric SUV from Gujarat to 23 countries the same month.

Restraints and Challenges

Affordability pressure

SUV prices have climbed faster than incomes. Kelley Blue Book reported a record US average transaction price of USD 50,326 in December 2025, and JATO found C-SUV prices in Europe rose about EUR 10,100 between 2018 and 2024. High prices push some buyers toward used vehicles or smaller cars. Higher interest rates have raised monthly payments further, so lenders and brands rely on longer loan terms and incentives to keep SUV volume moving.

Emissions and efficiency rules

SUVs are heavier and use more fuel than sedans of the same size. The IEA tracks the SUV shift as a main reason car-fleet emissions fall slowly, and the EU still requires a 90% cut in car CO2 by 2035 under its December 2025 proposal. Several European cities also charge more to park heavier vehicles.

Trade barriers and tariffs

The US Section 232 tariff of 25% on imported cars and SUVs since April 2025 raises costs for Japanese, Korean, European and Mexican-built models. Retaliation risks and changing rules complicate global production plans for SUV platforms.

Slower demand in mature markets

Cox Automotive expects US new-vehicle sales to fall about 2.4% to 15.8 million in 2026, and S&P Global Mobility forecasts global light-vehicle sales growth of only 0.2% in 2026. SUV growth in mature markets increasingly comes from share gains rather than market expansion.

Growth Drivers

Shift away from sedans and hatchbacks

Buyers in nearly every market prefer the higher seating position, cargo space and perceived safety of SUVs. Global SUV sales grew 6% in 2025 while sedans, compacts and estates fell 2% to about 29.7 million, according to Motor1's 149-market count. In India, utility vehicle sales crossed 3 million for the first time in FY2026, rising 11% to 3,105,025 units, with Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Tata Motors as the top three. Toyota alone sold about 4.86 million SUVs in 2025. Higher ground clearance also suits the rough road surfaces common in India, Southeast Asia and Africa, and SUV body styles hold stronger resale values in most markets, which lowers the true cost of ownership for private buyers. We estimate this body-style shift contributes about 1.8 percentage points to the annual growth of the sport utility vehicles market through 2035.

Electrification lifts average selling prices

Electric and hybrid SUVs sell at higher prices than combustion models of the same size. The IEA's Global EV Outlook 2026 found electric car sales grew 20% to more than 20 million in 2025, with SUVs making up about half of all electric models available. China's 2025 passenger-car retail market of 23.744 million units was 53.9% new energy vehicles, and the US average EV transaction price was USD 54,813 in August 2026. Because battery packs in SUVs are larger than in small cars, each point of electric share in this segment adds more value per unit than it does for hatchbacks. Electrification is worth roughly +1.2% of yearly value growth over the forecast period.

Emerging-market income growth and local production

Rising incomes in India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa are bringing first-time buyers straight into compact SUVs. Mahindra's BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs took 30,179 bookings on their first day in February 2025, and Maruti Suzuki started building the e Vitara in Gujarat for export. China's trade-in subsidy, renewed on 31 December 2025 with support of up to RMB 20,000 per vehicle, keeps replacement demand high. Local assembly in India and Southeast Asia also cuts import duties, bringing compact SUVs within reach of more middle-income households. Emerging-market demand adds close to 1.0% a year to market growth.

Opportunities

Affordable compact electric SUVs

The EU's proposed small electric car category and falling LFP battery costs open space for compact electric SUVs priced below USD 30,000. Makers that reach this price first can win share in Europe, India and Southeast Asia. Compact electric SUVs built on shared small-car platforms can reach these price points while still offering the higher seating position buyers want.

Three-row family SUVs with hybrid drives

Families in the US, China and the Gulf want three-row SUVs with lower fuel cost. Models such as the hybrid Palisade and Model Y L show demand for larger electrified family vehicles.

Asia Pacific Holds the Largest SUV Value While Africa and the Middle East Grow Fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 45.20% of the sport utility vehicles market in 2025, worth about USD 722.48 billion, and is forecast to reach USD 1,190.36 billion by 2035 at a 5.12% CAGR. China's SUV retail sales rose 5.0% to about 11.878 million units in 2025, led by the Tesla Model Y with 425,337 units. India sold 3,105,025 utility vehicles in FY2026, and Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Australia add mature SUV demand.

The average US compact SUV sold for USD 37,722 in August 2026.

Europe

Europe represented 17.30% of 2025 revenue, about USD 276.52 billion, and is expected to reach USD 405.79 billion by 2035 at a 3.91% CAGR. SUVs reached about 59% of European new car sales in 2025, led by the Volkswagen T-Roc and Tiguan. The EU allowed carmakers to average CO2 compliance over 2025-2027 in May 2025.

Latin America

Latin America held a 4.60% share, about USD 73.53 billion in 2025, and is projected at USD 115.61 billion by 2035, a 4.63% CAGR. Brazil's Mover program supports local production of more efficient vehicles, and Mexican SUV plants that export to the US face the 25% Section 232 tariff on non-US content since April 2025.

Middle East

The Middle East took 3.10% of the market in 2025, worth USD 49.55 billion, rising to USD 79.49 billion in 2035 at 4.84% a year. Middle East buyers favor large four-wheel drive and luxury SUVs, and Chinese brands are expanding quickly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Africa

Africa held 1.40% of 2025 revenue, about USD 22.38 billion, and is expected to reach USD 38.81 billion in 2035. At 5.66% a year, Africa is the fastest-growing region, led by South Africa, Morocco and Egypt, where compact SUVs from Indian and Chinese makers are gaining share.
