Pickups Lead Value, but Mini Trucks and Light Trucks Grow Faster
Pickup trucks are the leading vehicle type by value because of high US and Australian prices, yet they grow at only 3.80%. Mini trucks grow fastest at 6.20%, led by India and Southeast Asia, where Tata Motors launched the Ace Pro in June 2025 from Rs 3.99 lakh. Light trucks and chassis cabs grow at 5.10% with Chinese light truck volumes above 2 million, and vans grow at 4.90% as purpose-built electric vans arrive.
Internal Combustion Still Leads, While Battery Electric Grows at 17.40%
Diesel vans still took 80.7% of EU registrations in 2025, so internal combustion engines remain the leading propulsion type, though they grow at just 1.60%. Battery electric LCVs grow at 17.40% as Kia's PV5, the Mercedes-Benz VLE and the Renault Trafic Van E-Tech arrive. Hybrids grow at 9.30%, mainly in pickups, and fuel cell models grow at 12.80% from pilot fleets in Korea, Japan and Europe.
Smaller Payloads Gain in Cities
The 1 to 2 tonnes class is the largest payload band and grows at 4.40%. Vehicles up to 1 tonne grow fastest at 5.60% on mini trucks and compact electric vans for urban delivery. Vehicles above 2 tonnes grow at 4.20%, tied to construction and large-van demand. Low-emission zones in European cities also favor smaller vans that fit narrow streets and loading bays.
Parcel and E-commerce Delivery Is the Fastest End Use
Construction and trades is the leading end use, but it grows at 4.00%. Parcel and e-commerce delivery grows fastest at 6.10%; Amazon ran more than 30,000 Rivian electric vans by February 2026. Utilities and field services grow at 4.30% as telecom and energy networks expand, passenger transport at 3.90% with shuttle and taxi vans, and agriculture at 3.70%, where pickups remain the main farm vehicle.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Purpose-Built Electric Van Platforms Replace Converted Designs
In November 2025, Kia completed its Hwaseong EVO Plant, a KRW 4 trillion investment with capacity for 250,000 purpose-built vehicles a year, of which 100,000 are for the PV5. The PV5 passed 53,530 cumulative sales by the end of July 2026, about 60% overseas. In September 2025, Mercedes-Benz Vans began pre-series production of the VLE on its VAN.EA platform in Vitoria, Spain, and revealed the 115 kWh, 800-volt model in March 2026.
Pickups Are Gaining Electric and Hybrid Options
In November 2025, Toyota unveiled the ninth-generation Hilux in Thailand with its first battery electric version, using a 59.2 kWh battery and a 315 km NEDC range. Pickup makers are adding hybrid drivetrains first because buyers still need towing range, which keeps hybrid growth above 9% a year.
Consolidation Around Shared Van Platforms
In February 2026, Renault Group agreed to take full ownership of Flexis by buying Volvo Group's 45% stake and CMA CGM's 10% stake. Trafic Van E-Tech production at Sandouville is due by the end of 2026, and Renault Trucks will sell the vans from 2027. Stellantis Pro One already holds 28.7% of the EU30 van market, so scale on shared platforms is becoming the key to profit.
Fleet Electrification Led by Parcel Carriers
Large delivery fleets buy in volume and charge at depots. Amazon grew its Rivian electric delivery van fleet by more than 50% in 2025 to over 30,000 vans. In March 2026, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles reported that 2025 revenue rose 11% to EUR 16.9 billion on 428,000 deliveries, with more than 60,000 ID. Buzz vehicles delivered.
Restraints and Challenges
European Van Demand Is Falling
The ACEA full-year 2025 data show EU van registrations fell 8.8%, and SMMT reported a 10.3% drop in UK LCV sales to 315,422 units. Small businesses delayed purchases because of weak construction activity and uncertainty about electric van costs.
Electric Van Uptake Lags Regulatory Targets
UK battery electric vans took 9.5% of sales in 2025 against a ZEV mandate target of 16%, which rises to 24% in 2026. The UK government responded in April 2025 by letting makers trade van credits for car credits and by allowing hybrid vans until 2035. Missing targets forces makers to discount electric vans, which squeezes margins.
Margins Are Under Pressure
Ford Pro's 2025 EBIT fell to USD 6.84 billion from USD 9.0 billion, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles earned a 1.5% return on sales. Tariffs, warranty costs and electric van price cuts all weigh on profit, which may slow platform investment.
Charging Access for Small Fleets
Sole traders and small firms often park on the street and cannot charge overnight. Without workplace or public charging close to home, these buyers stay with diesel, which caps electric growth outside large fleets.
Growth Drivers
E-commerce and Last-Mile Delivery Volumes
Online retail keeps adding delivery routes in every region, and carriers need more vans per city. Amazon's Rivian fleet passed 30,000 vans in early 2026 after growing more than 50% in 2025, and Kia sold over 53,000 PV5 vans within about 13 months of launch. Parcel fleets replace vans every four to six years, which gives steady repeat demand. We estimate this driver contributes about +1.2% of annual growth to the light commercial vehicles market through 2035.
Emerging Market Commercial Activity in China, India and Southeast Asia
China sold 4.296 million commercial vehicles in 2025, up 10.9%, and light trucks passed 2 million units, led by Foton. India set a record of about 1.08 million commercial vehicles in fiscal 2025-26, up 12.6%, and Tata Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra serve small traders with mini trucks and pickups. Rising incomes, road building and rural logistics lift demand for low-cost vehicles that carry under 2 tonnes. This adds roughly 1.0 percentage point a year to the market CAGR and explains why Asia Pacific grows faster than North America.
CO2 Rules and Fleet Electrification Programs
In May 2025, the European Parliament adopted three-year averaging of CO2 compliance for 2025 to 2027 for cars and vans, giving makers time but keeping the targets. The UK ZEV mandate rises to 24% for vans in 2026. These rules push makers to launch electric vans at lower prices, and battery electric vans carry higher average selling prices than diesel models, which lifts market value even when unit growth is modest. We put the value effect of this shift at around +0.8% of yearly growth.
Opportunities
Software-Defined Vans and Fleet Services
Ford Pro earns a growing share of profit from telematics, charging and service subscriptions. Makers that bundle software, charging and maintenance with each van can lift lifetime revenue per vehicle.
Electric Mini Trucks for Asia and Africa
Low-cost electric mini trucks such as the Tata Ace Pro EV, with a 155 km range, suit short urban routes in India, Southeast Asia and African cities, where fuel costs weigh heavily on small operators.
North America Leads Light Commercial Vehicle Value While Emerging Regions Grow Faster
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 33.40% share of the light commercial vehicles market, worth USD 113.14 Billion in 2025, and reaches USD 196.96 Billion by 2035 at a 5.70% CAGR. China's light trucks passed 2 million units in 2025, and India sold about 1.08 million commercial vehicles in fiscal 2025-26. Asia Pacific also builds the Hilux in Thailand and the PV5 in Korea.
North America
North America accounts for 37.20% of 2025 value, or USD 126.02 Billion, and grows at 3.70% to USD 181.22 Billion by 2035. Ford Pro wholesaled 1.488 million vehicles in 2025 at about USD 44,600 of revenue per unit, and Stellantis Pro One holds 14.8% of North American commercial vehicles. Amazon's Rivian van fleet is the largest North American electric delivery fleet.
Europe
Europe represents 21.60% of the market, at USD 73.17 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 111.47 Billion by 2035 at a 4.30% CAGR. EU van registrations fell 8.8% in 2025, while electrically chargeable vans reached 11.2% of European Union sales. Stellantis Pro One holds 28.7% of the EU30 van market.
Latin America
Latin America takes a 4.30% share, worth USD 14.57 Billion in 2025, and grows at 4.90% to USD 23.50 Billion by 2035. Stellantis Pro One holds 33.6% of South American commercial vehicles, and Latin American demand centers on Brazil's Fiat Strada and Toro and Argentina's pickup plants.
Middle East
The Middle East holds a 2.30% share, or USD 7.79 Billion in 2025, and grows at 5.40% to USD 13.18 Billion by 2035. Toyota Hilux and Hiace dominate Middle East fleets, and Gulf logistics hubs are adding electric delivery vans from Chinese and Korean makers.
Africa
Africa is the smallest region at a 1.20% share, worth USD 4.07 Billion in 2025, but grows fastest at 6.10% to USD 7.35 Billion by 2035. South Africa builds the Hilux, Ranger and Isuzu D-Max for African and export markets, and mini trucks are gaining in Nigeria and Kenya.
