Hybrids, Not Battery Pickups, Now Carry the Fastest Growth in a Market Still Anchored in North America
New pickup trucks sold worldwide generated USD 241.36 Billion in 2025, a total we expect to reach USD 248.89 Billion in 2026 and USD 328.17 Billion by 2035, a 3.12% CAGR over the decade.
Radial Insights sizes the pickup trucks market as the factory-level value of new light and heavy-duty pickups with an open cargo bed, sold to private, commercial and government buyers. That covers compact and midsize models such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max, full-size models such as the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500, and heavy-duty three-quarter-ton and one-ton versions. We exclude used vehicle sales, chassis cabs sold without a factory bed to body builders, aftermarket accessories, and medium-duty trucks above Class 3.
Growth is steady rather than fast. North American demand is mature, prices rose sharply between 2021 and 2024, and tariffs on imported vehicles and parts added cost in 2025. Yet buyers keep choosing pickups: Ford reported that its 2025 US sales rose 6% to about 2.2 million vehicles, its best year since 2019, with F-Series sales up 8.3%.
The fastest-growing segment is hybrid and plug-in hybrid propulsion at an 11.40% CAGR. Automakers have moved investment away from pure battery pickups, and Ford ended F-150 Lightning production in December 2025 in favor of an extended-range version, while BYD, Toyota and Ford push plug-in hybrid utes in Australia and Asia.
The fastest-growing region is Africa at a 4.80% CAGR, followed by Asia Pacific (APAC) at 4.45%. North America remains the largest region by value through 2035, because its full-size trucks sell at much higher prices than the one-ton utes common elsewhere.

Electrified Midsize Crew-Cab Pickups Outgrow the Traditional Diesel Workhorse
Four segment views explain where pickup trucks market value moves through 2035. The common thread is that buyers want family-friendly crew cabs with lower fuel bills, and automakers are answering with midsize platforms and hybrid drivetrains rather than with new full-size diesel engines.
| Dimension | Segment | CAGR 2025-2035 |
|---|---|---|
| Size Class | Compact and Midsize | 3.85% |
| Size Class | Full-Size | 2.70% |
| Size Class | Heavy-Duty | 3.05% |
| Propulsion | Diesel | 0.95% |

| End Use | Personal | 3.30% |
| End Use | Commercial and Fleet | 2.90% |
| End Use | Government and Defense | 2.40% |
Compact and Midsize Pickups Grow Fastest by Size at 3.85%
Full-size pickups produce the most revenue because of high US transaction prices, but they grow at 2.70% as the US market matures. Compact and midsize pickups grow faster at 3.85%. Ford said in August 2025 that it will build an affordable midsize electric pickup at its Louisville plant from 2027, and Hyundai, Honda and Toyota sell smaller pickups to buyers who want a bed without full-size cost. Outside North America, almost every pickup sold is in this class. Heavy-duty models grow at 3.05%, helped by fleet demand from utilities, construction and towing.
Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Pickups Lead Propulsion Growth at 11.40%
Diesel still powers most utes in Asia, Africa and Latin America, but it grows at just 0.95% as emissions rules tighten. Gasoline grows at 2.10%. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid pickups grow at 11.40% because they cut fuel use without the range and towing limits of battery trucks. Ram dropped its battery-electric 1500 REV in 2025 to focus on the range-extended Ramcharger, and Ford is replacing the F-150 Lightning with an extended-range version. Battery electric pickups still grow at 9.80% from a small base, supported by Rivian, Tesla Cybertruck and Toyota's first electric Hilux.
Crew and Double Cabs Gain Share at 3.65%
Pickups are now family vehicles in the United States, Australia and Thailand, and four-door crew and double cabs grow at 3.65%. Extended cabs grow at 2.20%, while regular cabs, used mostly by fleets and farms, grow at 1.60%. Higher trims on crew-cab models lift average prices, which supports value growth even when unit volumes are flat.
Personal Buyers Drive Demand at 3.30%
Personal use grows at 3.30% as lifestyle buyers trade into well-equipped pickups. Commercial and fleet demand grows at 2.90%, tied to construction, mining, agriculture and utility spending. Government and defense purchases grow at 2.40%, led by police, forestry and military light utility fleets.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Automakers Retreat from Battery Pickups toward Extended-Range Designs
In December 2025, Ford ended production of the F-150 Lightning and said a next-generation extended-range electric F-150 would replace it, citing an eroded business case for the battery-only version. Ram had already moved its focus from the battery-electric 1500 REV to the range-extended Ramcharger. These decisions reflect weak demand for heavy, expensive battery pickups among towing buyers, and they shift supplier volume toward generators, smaller battery packs and hybrid transmissions.
V8 Engines Return to Meet Buyer Demand
In June 2025, Ram announced that the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 would return to the 2026 Ram 1500 after the engine had been dropped, with its chief executive saying the brand had made a mistake. The move followed loosened US fuel economy enforcement and strong dealer feedback. It shows how US full-size demand still centers on engines with high towing capacity.
Global Utes Electrify through Plug-in Hybrids
BYD began Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute deliveries in Australia in January 2025, entering a market long led by the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. In November 2025, Toyota revealed the ninth-generation Hilux with a battery electric version for the first time, plus diesel and petrol options. Ford sells a Ranger plug-in hybrid in Europe and Australia. Plug-in utes are spreading across Asia Pacific (APAC), Europe and the Middle East as fuel and emissions costs rise.
Affordable Electric Pickups Target First-Time Buyers
In August 2025, Ford announced a USD 5 billion investment, including about USD 2 billion at Louisville Assembly, to build a Universal EV Platform and a midsize electric pickup priced around USD 30,000 from 2027. Start-ups such as Slate Auto are also targeting low-priced electric pickups. A lower entry price could widen the buyer pool for small trucks in North America during the second half of the forecast.
Restraints and Challenges
Tariffs Raise the Cost of Imported Trucks and Parts
US Section 232 tariffs of 25% on imported vehicles and auto parts took effect in 2025, on top of the long-standing 25% US tariff on imported light trucks. A separate proclamation in October 2025 set 25% tariffs on medium and heavy trucks and their parts from November 1, 2025. Even pickups built in the United States use imported parts, so tariffs lift prices and squeeze margins. Ford's 2025 US sales rose, but higher costs limit how far automakers can cut prices to win new buyers.
Affordability Limits the Buyer Pool
The average full-size pickup in the United States sells for well above the average new vehicle price, and high interest rates since 2023 have raised monthly payments. Younger buyers and small businesses are delaying purchases or moving to used trucks, which caps new-vehicle growth in North America, the largest region.
Emissions Rules Pressure Diesel Utes
In the United States, pickups are covered by the NHTSA Corporate Average Fuel Economy program, even after enforcement was loosened in 2025. Australia's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, Euro 7 in Europe and tighter fuel rules in Thailand and other Asian markets push makers to cut fleet emissions. Diesel utes, the core product in most markets outside North America, face higher compliance costs, and makers must sell more hybrids or pay penalties.
Volatile Demand in Key Production Hubs
Thailand, a global ute export hub, saw pickup production fall 42.10% in February 2025 as tight auto lending hit domestic demand, and full-year 2025 vehicle output was about 1.45 million units. Swings like this affect Toyota, Isuzu, Ford and Mitsubishi, which all build pickups in Thailand for export to Australia, the Middle East and Africa.
Growth Drivers
Steady North American Replacement and Upgrade Demand
North American pickup owners replace trucks on a regular cycle, and the installed base is large. Ford's F-Series rose 8.3% in 2025 as Ford's total US sales climbed 6% to about 2.2 million vehicles, its best year since 2019. General Motors and Stellantis are refreshing the Silverado, Sierra and Ram lines, and Ram's return of the Hemi V8 for 2026 brought back buyers who had held off. High-trim crew-cab models lift average prices. Radial Insights estimates this replacement and upgrade demand contributes about +1.4% of annual growth to the 3.12% CAGR, the largest single driver because of the region's 68.40% share.
Electrified Utes Open New Buyers in Asia Pacific and Europe
Plug-in hybrid utes such as the BYD Shark 6, Ford Ranger PHEV and upcoming Toyota Hilux variants let fleet and private buyers meet emissions rules while keeping payload and towing ability. BYD started Australian deliveries in January 2025, and Toyota revealed a battery electric Hilux in November 2025. Chinese brands including Great Wall Motor and BYD are adding pickups for export markets. We estimate that electrified utes add roughly 0.9 percentage points to yearly pickup revenue growth, with the effect rising after 2028 as more markets adopt fleet emissions targets.
Infrastructure, Mining and Farm Spending in Emerging Markets
Pickups are the default work vehicle across Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Governments in Saudi Arabia, India, Indonesia and South Africa are spending on roads, housing and mining, and fleets that serve these projects buy one-ton utes in large numbers. Mahindra and Tata Motors sell low-cost pickups in India, and Toyota builds the Hilux in South Africa, Argentina and Thailand for regional demand. This work-vehicle demand lifts the emerging-market share of revenue and accounts for close to +0.8% of yearly expansion through 2035.
Opportunities
Affordable Midsize Electric Pickups
Ford's planned USD 30,000 midsize electric pickup, due in 2027, points to an underserved price point in North America. A lower-cost truck with a small battery could pull in buyers who now choose compact crossovers, and suppliers of cheaper LFP batteries and simplified platforms stand to benefit.
Tires, Wheels and Accessories for Heavier Pickups
Hybrid and electric pickups weigh more than gasoline versions, which raises demand for higher load-index tires, stronger wheels and suspension upgrades. All-terrain and mud-terrain tire makers, wheel suppliers and bed accessory brands can grow with a pickup fleet that is getting heavier and more lifestyle oriented.
North America Holds More Than Two Thirds of Pickup Revenue, While Africa and Asia Pacific Grow Fastest
North America
North America held a 68.40% share of the pickup trucks market in 2025. The North American pickup market was worth USD 165.09 Billion in 2025 and reaches USD 212.36 Billion by 2035 at a 2.55% CAGR. In North America, Ford sold about 2.2 million vehicles in the United States in 2025, with F-Series sales up 8.3%. North American supply will widen in 2027, when Ford starts building a midsize electric pickup at Louisville, Kentucky, under a USD 5 billion platform plan. North American growth is the slowest of the six regions because the market is already saturated with full-size trucks.
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) represented 15.20% of global pickup revenue in 2025. APAC revenue was USD 36.69 Billion in 2025 and is forecast at USD 56.70 Billion in 2035, a 4.45% CAGR. Thailand, the main APAC production hub, built about 1.45 million vehicles in 2025, and APAC buyers in Australia began taking BYD Shark 6 deliveries in January 2025. Toyota revealed the ninth-generation Hilux for APAC and global markets in November 2025, and Mahindra and Tata Motors lead low-cost pickups in India.
Europe
Europe accounted for 3.40% of the pickup trucks market in 2025. European pickup revenue was USD 8.21 Billion in 2025 and rises to USD 11.80 Billion by 2035 at 3.70% a year. Most European pickups are registered as light commercial vehicles, so European makers must meet EU van CO2 rules that require a 50% cut in fleet emissions by 2030 from 2021 levels. In Europe's largest pickup market, the United Kingdom began taxing double-cab pickups with a one-tonne payload as company cars from April 2025, which has slowed European business demand.
Latin America
Latin America held a 6.10% share of 2025 pickup revenue. Latin American revenue was USD 14.72 Billion in 2025 and reaches USD 21.69 Billion in 2035, a 3.95% CAGR. Latin America hosts one of the Hilux's 3 main global production bases at Zarate in Argentina, and Ford builds the Ranger for Latin American buyers at General Pacheco. Latin American pickups made in Mexico for the United States faced the 25% Section 232 tariff on non-US content from 2025, which pushes Mexican output toward regional sales.
Middle East
The Middle East took a 4.30% share of pickup revenue in 2025. Middle East revenue was USD 10.38 Billion in 2025 and grows to USD 15.51 Billion by 2035 at a 4.10% CAGR. Most Middle East utes are imported from Thailand, which built about 1.45 million vehicles in 2025, and Middle East fleet demand is tied to Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 construction program and oil field services. Chinese brands such as Great Wall Motor are gaining share in the Middle East against the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara and Isuzu D-Max.
Africa
Africa held a 2.60% share of the global pickup trucks market in 2025. African revenue was USD 6.28 Billion in 2025 and reaches USD 10.03 Billion in 2035, the fastest regional CAGR at 4.80%. Africa's production base is South Africa, where Toyota builds the Hilux in Durban and Ford added Ranger plug-in hybrid output at Silverton in 2025 for African sale and export. Mining, agriculture and road building across Africa keep demand for 1-tonne utes rising from a low base.
| Region | 2025 (USD Billion) | 2025 share | 2035 (USD Billion) | CAGR 2025-2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North America | 165.09 | 68.40% | 212.36 | 2.55% |
| Asia Pacific (APAC) | 36.69 | 15.20% | 56.70 | 4.45% |

Toyota Motor Corporation sells the Hilux in more than 180 markets and the Tacoma and Tundra in North America, and its new Hilux adds a battery electric option. Isuzu Motors builds the D-Max in Thailand and has introduced an electric version for Europe. Nissan sells the Navara and Frontier, and Mitsubishi Motors sells the Triton, both with strong positions in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Chinese and Indian Challengers
BYD entered the ute segment with the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid, launched in Australia in January 2025, and Great Wall Motor exports the Poer and Cannon pickups to Australia, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors serve India's commercial pickup buyers with low-cost diesel and CNG models.
Electric and Crossover Pickups
Rivian Automotive builds the R1T electric pickup, and Tesla sells the Cybertruck, both in North America. Honda's Ridgeline and Hyundai's Santa Cruz offer unibody pickups for buyers who want car-like handling. Ford's planned USD 30,000 electric pickup in 2027 will compete directly with start-ups in the affordable segment.
