Zonal Architectures Make Ethernet the Backbone of the Software-Defined Vehicle

Zonal wiring and software-defined vehicles put the automotive Ethernet market at USD 3.12 Billion in 2025, with Radial Insights projecting USD 3.61 Billion in 2026 and USD 13.53 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 15.80% for 2025-2035.

The USD 3.12 Billion base covers in-vehicle Ethernet hardware: physical layer transceivers (PHYs), switches, bridges and Ethernet-capable controllers, plus the unshielded and shielded twisted-pair cables and connectors that carry 10 Mb/s to multi-gigabit traffic inside cars, vans, trucks and buses. Test and measurement equipment, network software licenses and off-board charging or diagnostic Ethernet links are excluded. Proprietary serializer links such as GMSL and FPD-Link are tracked as competing technologies, not as part of this market.

Content per vehicle is rising quickly. Infineon has said today's cars carry up to 75 electronic control units and more than 20 Ethernet ports running at up to 1 Gb/s, while zonal designs reach up to 70 ports with a 1 to 10 Gb/s backbone. OICA counted 96.4 million vehicles built worldwide in 2025, so even modest gains in port count translate into large unit volumes.

10BASE-T1S is the fastest-growing bandwidth class at an estimated 27.30% CAGR, as Microchip, Texas Instruments, NXP and Analog Devices launched endpoint and PHY parts that let Ethernet replace CAN and LIN at the vehicle edge. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the largest region with a 44.60% share and the fastest-growing at 16.90% a year.

Competing serializer links, cost pressure on entry vehicles and new US connected-vehicle sourcing rules shape the outlook, but the automotive Ethernet market still expands more than fourfold over the decade.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

10BASE-T1S Moves Into Production Parts

Microchip introduced its LAN866x 10BASE-T1S endpoint devices in November 2025, using a Remote Control Protocol to create software-less bridges for lighting, audio and sensors. Texas Instruments launched the DP83TD555J-Q1 10BASE-T1S PHY with integrated MAC and power over data line at CES in January 2026. NXP began production of its TJA1410 10BASE-T1S transceiver in February 2026, and Rohde & Schwarz added 10BASE-T1S decoding for Analog Devices E2B edge nodes in April 2025.

Consolidation Among Chip Suppliers

Marvell agreed in April 2025 to sell its automotive Ethernet business to Infineon for USD 2.5 billion in cash, and Infineon completed the deal in August 2025. The Brightlane portfolio covers PHYs, switches and bridges from 100 Mb/s to 10 Gb/s and has design wins at 45 automakers, including 8 of the top 10. Infineon now offers Ethernet alongside its microcontrollers, which lets it sell complete zonal controller chipsets.

Multi-Gig Connectors and Asymmetric Links

TE Connectivity's GEMnet connector supports 100BASE-T1 through 25GBASE-T1 and up to 56 Gb/s, and Molex launched its 25 Gb/s HSAutoLink G connector in June 2026. The IEEE 802.3dm asymmetric Ethernet project, with parts sampling in June 2025, targets up to 10 Gb/s downstream over 15 meters with up to four inline connectors, giving cameras and displays an Ethernet option.

Test Tools Follow New Standards

Keysight launched a 10BASE-T1S receiver test solution built with BitifEye and an nGBASE-AU optical test solution in March 2026, aligned with OPEN Alliance TC14 and IEEE 802.3cz. Faster compliance testing shortens qualification cycles for new PHYs and connectors.

Restraints and Challenges

Competition From Serializer Links

Cameras and displays often use point-to-point serializer links such as GMSL. An Analog Devices executive said in November 2025 that about 50% of software-defined vehicle network data runs over GMSL and called Ethernet a small slice of that data. Until asymmetric Ethernet is standardized and priced competitively, serializers will keep much of the high-bandwidth sensor traffic.

Connected-Vehicle Sourcing Rules

The US Commerce Department's connected-vehicle rule, finalized in January 2025, bans vehicle connectivity hardware and software linked to China or Russia, with the software ban from model year 2027 and the hardware ban from model year 2030. Network chips and modules sold into US vehicles need clean supply chains, which raises qualification work for suppliers and limits some Chinese vendors.

Cost Pressure on Entry Vehicles

CAN and LIN transceivers cost far less than Ethernet PHYs and switches. Automakers under margin pressure in 2025 and 2026 delayed some zonal programs on entry models. Infineon's fiscal 2025 results showed its Automotive segment down 4% to EUR 7,402 million, with fiscal 2026 automotive growth guided below the group average.

Software and Security Complexity

Moving to Ethernet means time-sensitive networking, secure boot and MACsec encryption on many nodes. Each new layer adds validation time, and automakers with limited software teams move slowly, which delays volume ramps of new network designs.

Growth Drivers

Zonal Architectures Multiply Ports Per Vehicle

Infineon has said current cars carry up to 75 ECUs and more than 20 Ethernet ports, while zonal designs reach up to 70 ports with a 1 to 10 Gb/s backbone and a 25 Gb/s backbone targeted around 2030. Rivian's second-generation R1T and R1S cut ECUs from 17 to 7 and removed 1.6 miles of wiring, roughly 44 pounds, by moving to zonal controllers on a high-speed network. Infineon cites a design-win pipeline of about USD 4 billion by 2030 for the former Marvell business. Radial Insights estimates zonal adoption adds about +1.6% of annual growth to the automotive Ethernet market, since each zonal car needs several switches and many more PHYs.

10BASE-T1S Replaces CAN and LIN at the Edge

A single 10BASE-T1S multidrop segment can link many low-speed nodes, and the endpoint parts launched by Microchip in November 2025, Texas Instruments in January 2026 and NXP in February 2026 remove the need for a microcontroller at each light or sensor. This turns body and comfort functions, the largest node count in a car, into Ethernet sockets. OICA's count of 96.4 million vehicles built in 2025 means each added 10BASE-T1S node per car adds close to 100 million units a year. Radial Insights credits edge Ethernet with roughly 1.2 percentage points of the 15.80% CAGR.

ADAS Sensors Need Higher Bandwidth

Driver assistance systems combine data from many cameras, radars and lidars, and central compute needs synchronized, high-bandwidth links. Texas Instruments launched its 10BASE-T1S PHY alongside new TDA5 SoCs and the AWR2188 radar in January 2026, showing how network and sensor roadmaps are now tied. Multi-gig connectors from Molex and TE Connectivity rated to 25 Gb/s and above prepare cars for these loads. Higher-speed links carry higher prices per port, which lifts the market by close to 0.9% a year in Radial Insights' model.

Opportunities

Commercial Vehicle and Bus Networks

Trucks and buses are adding camera monitor systems, fleet telematics and driver assistance. Rugged multi-gig links for long cable runs in heavy vehicles offer suppliers a niche with fewer competitors.

Combined Microcontroller and Network Chipsets

After the Infineon and Marvell deal, chipmakers that pair zonal microcontrollers with Ethernet switches and PHYs can sell full reference designs. NXP's S32 platforms paired with its 10BASE-T1S parts show this model, which reduces integration work for Tier-1 suppliers.

Asia Pacific Leads Automotive Ethernet on China's EV Platform Volume

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 44.60% share of the automotive Ethernet market in 2025, worth about USD 1.39 Billion. The APAC market is set to reach USD 6.63 Billion by 2035 at a 16.90% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, and Chinese EV makers launch new zonal platforms on short cycles; Realtek in Taiwan expects stronger 2026 results driven by its automotive Ethernet products.

North America

North America accounted for 23.80% of 2025 revenue, about USD 743 Million. The North America market should reach USD 2.95 Billion by 2035 at 14.80% a year. Rivian's zonal R1 platform shows how US EV makers are moving to Ethernet backbones, while the US connected-vehicle rule from January 2025 shapes which chips can be used from model year 2027.

Europe

Europe represented 25.40% of 2025 revenue, about USD 793 Million, and is forecast to reach USD 3.10 Billion by 2035 at a 14.60% CAGR. Infineon, NXP, Rosenberger and Rohde & Schwarz are European, and German premium brands were early adopters of 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 networks, so Europe has a high base and slightly slower growth.

Latin America

Latin America held a 3.10% share in 2025, about USD 97 Million, and is projected to reach USD 423 Million by 2035 at 15.90% a year. Mexico builds many US-bound vehicles with Ethernet-equipped ADAS, and Brazil's plants are adopting global platforms with Ethernet gateways.

Middle East

The Middle East captured 1.90% of 2025 revenue, about USD 59 Million, and is expected to reach USD 271 Million by 2035 at a 16.40% CAGR. Regional demand comes from imported premium and Chinese EVs, and new assembly projects in Saudi Arabia add local content.

Africa

Africa accounted for 1.20% of the 2025 market, about USD 37 Million, rising to about USD 182 Million by 2035 at a 17.10% CAGR. South Africa and Morocco assemble export models for Europe that carry Ethernet networks, which gives the region a small but fast-growing base.
