Hard and Powered Bed Covers Lift Tonneau Covers Spending to USD 5.37 Billion by 2035
Pickup owners spent USD 3.26 billion on tonneau covers worldwide in 2025, a figure Radial Insights sees rising to USD 3.43 billion in 2026 and USD 5.37 billion by 2035 at a 5.12% CAGR. Growth comes more from higher-value hard and powered covers than from extra units.
The Tonneau Covers market covers every bed cover sold for pickup trucks and utes: soft roll-up and soft folding vinyl covers, hard folding aluminum and composite panels, retractable roll-top covers, hard one-piece and hinged lids, and powered covers driven by electric motors. We count both covers installed by automakers and dealers and covers sold through installers, retail chains and online stores. Truck caps and canopies, bed liners, cargo management systems and roller shutters sold as part of a full canopy are excluded, although several leading brands sell all of them.
North America is the heart of the market. Ford sold 828,832 F-Series trucks in the US in 2025, up 8.3%, plus a record 155,051 Maverick compact pickups, and GM said its Silverado and Sierra had their best year in two decades. SEMA's 2026 market report estimates that nearly 13 million US pickups were accessorized in 2025, with more than USD 15 billion spent on pickup accessories. A tonneau cover is often the first purchase after a new truck because it protects cargo and locks the bed.
Powered covers are the fastest-growing segment at an 8.95% CAGR, as retractable designs add motors and remote control. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at a 7.05% CAGR, led by Australia, Thailand and new Chinese and Korean utes. North America holds a 62.80% share in 2025.
Costs moved sharply in 2025. US duties on aluminum rose to 50% in June 2025, which raised input costs for hard folding and retractable covers made from extruded aluminum, and patent disputes between the largest brands intensified as hard folding designs became the profit center of the industry.

Retractable and Hard Folding Covers Outgrow Soft Covers
Retractable covers grow at 6.40% because they leave the full bed usable and lock at any position, a feature RealTruck highlighted with the Retrax FRC-4000 manual retractable cover at SEMA 2025. Hard Folding covers grow at 5.85% and are now the profit center of the category, which explains the patent suits RealTruck filed against Rough Country in 2025. Hard One-Piece and Hinged covers grow at 4.10%, steady in fleet and painted-to-match uses. Soft Folding, at 3.95%, and Soft Roll-Up, at 3.60%, remain the entry price points but lose share as buyers trade up.
Aluminum Leads Material Growth Despite Higher Duties
Aluminum panels and slats grow at 5.75%, tracking hard folding and retractable covers, even though US aluminum duties rose to 50% in June 2025. Worksport cited aluminum cost pressure on its AL3, AL4 and HD3 covers in its 2025 results. Fiberglass and Composite grows at 4.55% for one-piece lids, and Vinyl and Fabric grows at 3.70%.
Powered Covers Expand Fastest From a Small Base
Powered covers grow at 8.95% as brands add motors, key fob control and integration with vehicle electrical systems, and as Kia priced an electric roller shutter for the Tasman in Australia at A$6,005 in June 2025. Manual covers, at 4.70%, still make up the large majority of units.
Mid-Size and Compact Pickups Outpace Full-Size Trucks
Mid-Size and Compact Pickups grow at 5.95%, helped by Ford Ranger US sales rising 53.6% and Maverick reaching a record in 2025, plus new utes such as the Kia Tasman and BYD Shark 6. Full-Size Pickups grow at 4.80% from the largest base.
Online Sales and OEM Programs Gain on Traditional Installers
Online and Direct-to-Consumer channels grow at 6.20% as fit data and easy clamp-on designs reduce the need for installation. OEM and Dealer Installed covers grow at 5.30%, supported by programs such as the RealTruck Advantage hard rolling cover sold through Ford for the 2026 Ranger. Aftermarket Retail and Installers grow at 4.75%.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Patent Enforcement Shapes Hard Cover Competition
In August 2025 RealTruck won the claim construction phase of its patent case against Rough Country over hard folding covers in the Western District of Tennessee, and in September 2025 it filed a second suit over hard roll-up covers. With a portfolio of more than 1,000 patents, the market leader is using intellectual property to protect pricing in its highest-margin designs.
Consolidation Across Bed Covers and Caps
In August 2026 RealTruck acquired LEER Group assets from JB Poindexter, including LEER, SnugTop, Century and Pace Edwards. The deal gives the largest tonneau supplier control of the leading truck cap brands too, so dealers can buy covers, caps and liners from one source.
Solar and Energy-Storage Covers
Worksport began commercial launch of its SOLIS solar tonneau cover and COR portable energy system from January 2026, after mentioning a Hyundai partnership in its November 2025 results. Covers that generate power for camping or job sites point to a new premium tier, especially for electric pickups.
New Utes Spread the Category Outside North America
Toyota revealed the ninth-generation Hilux in November 2025 with battery-electric and 48-volt mild-hybrid versions, and Kia priced Tasman accessories in Australia in June 2025, from a A$1,065 soft tonneau to a A$2,343 aluminum cover. Factory accessory catalogs make covers part of the new-vehicle sale in markets where aftermarket coverage used to lag.
Restraints and Challenges
Aluminum Tariffs and Input Costs
Section 232 duties on steel and aluminum were set at 25% in March 2025 and raised to 50% in June 2025, and Commerce added 407 derivative product codes in August 2025. An April 2026 proclamation changed the duty basis again. Covers made from imported extrusions or finished in Asia saw landed costs climb, and LEER Group's sale was linked to rising manufacturing costs.
Fewer Federal Fuel-Economy Incentives
Tonneau covers can cut aerodynamic drag on pickups, which once helped automakers chase fuel-economy targets. In February 2026 the US Environmental Protection Agency rescinded federal vehicle greenhouse gas standards and eliminated all off-cycle credits, reducing the pressure on automakers to fit aerodynamic aids at the factory.
Softer Pickup Demand in Thailand and Australia
Thailand's domestic pickup sales fell 12.41% to 143,072 units in 2025, and Australia's top two utes both declined, with the Ford Ranger down 9.6% and the Toyota HiLux down 4.1%. Weak ute sales slow first-fit cover demand in two of the largest markets outside North America.
Price Competition From Imports and Private Label
Low-cost soft and hard folding covers sold online compress prices at the entry level, and patent disputes add legal costs. Smaller brands without fit data or warranty networks struggle to keep margins.
Growth Drivers
Strong Pickup Sales in the United States
Pickup sales set the size of the addressable fleet. Ford sold 2,204,124 vehicles in the US in 2025, including 828,832 F-Series trucks, up 8.3%, 155,051 Mavericks and 70,960 Rangers, up 53.6%. GM reported its best Silverado and Sierra year in 20 years and called itself the full-size pickup leader for the sixth year in a row. Every new pickup is a likely tonneau buyer within the first year of ownership, and buyers of mid-size and compact trucks are now adding covers at rates close to full-size owners. We estimate the expanding pickup parc adds roughly +1.6% to the yearly growth rate of the Tonneau Covers market through 2035.
Rising Accessory Spending Per Truck
SEMA's 2025 market report put 2024 US accessory spending at about USD 52.65 billion, with pickups making up about one-third of the market, and its 2026 report put 2025 spending at USD 52.92 billion, with more than USD 15 billion spent on almost 13 million accessorized pickups. Average spend per truck is rising as owners choose hard folding, retractable and powered covers that cost several times more than soft covers. Worksport, a smaller listed maker, grew 2025 net sales 91% to USD 16.2 million and reported a record second quarter of USD 5.23 million in 2026. Trading up from soft to hard covers contributes about 1.1 percentage points of CAGR in our model.
Factory Accessory Programs and New Ute Launches
Automakers want accessory revenue, and tonneau covers are among the easiest items to sell with a new truck. Ford sells a RealTruck Advantage hard rolling cover for the 2026 Ranger, Kia launched a full Tasman accessory range in Australia in June 2025, and Toyota's new Hilux reaches UK showrooms in June 2026. New entrants such as the BYD Shark 6, which sold 18,073 units in Australia in 2025, bring fresh fitment demand. OEM programs and ute launches add an estimated +0.8% of annual growth, most of it outside the United States.
Opportunities
Covers for Electric Pickups
Electric pickups gain range from lower drag and can power motorized and solar covers. Brands that design for battery-electric utes such as the Hilux BEV, with its 59.2 kWh battery, can sell higher-value products.
Fleet and Commercial Buyers
Fleets want lockable, durable covers that cut theft and weather damage. One-piece and hard folding covers bundled with bed liners and cargo systems give suppliers a route into large fleet contracts.
North America Holds Most of the Value While Asia Pacific Grows Fastest
North America
North America held a 62.80% share of the Tonneau Covers market in 2025. The North American market was worth USD 2,047.3 million in 2025 and reaches USD 3,164.2 million by 2035 at a 4.45% CAGR. US sales of 828,832 F-Series and 155,051 Maverick pickups in 2025, and nearly 13 million accessorized pickups, keep North American demand the deepest in the world. RealTruck, with about 5,000 associates, 78 facilities and more than 12,000 dealers, anchors the region.
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 17.40% of 2025 value. Asia Pacific demand grows from USD 567.2 million to USD 1,121.1 million by 2035, the fastest-growing regional rate at 7.05%. Australia sold 212,513 4x4 utes in 2025, led by the Ford Ranger at 56,555 units, and Thailand built 893,921 one-ton pickups, 61.41% of its vehicle output. New entrants such as the Kia Tasman and BYD Shark 6 widen APAC fitment demand.
Europe
Europe held a 7.10% share in 2025. European value rises from USD 231.5 million in 2025 to USD 352.6 million by 2035, a 4.30% CAGR. The ninth-generation Toyota Hilux, with a 59.2 kWh battery-electric version and a 48-volt diesel hybrid, goes on sale in the UK in June 2026. Pickups in Europe are mostly work vehicles, so hard one-piece covers and roller shutters lead.
Latin America
Latin America represented 6.20% of the market in 2025. Latin American sales of USD 202.1 million grow to USD 356.9 million by 2035 at a 5.85% CAGR. Argentina builds the Ford Ranger at General Pacheco and the Toyota Hilux at Zárate, and Brazil and Mexico add large mid-size pickup fleets in Latin America.
Middle East
The Middle East held a 3.90% share in 2025. Middle East demand climbs from USD 127.1 million in 2025 to USD 229.8 million by 2035 at 6.10% a year. Thailand exported 728,219 one-ton pickups in 2025, up 2.0%, part of a supply base that serves Gulf buyers, and summer heat above 45 degrees Celsius favors UV-stable hard covers in the Middle East.
Africa
Africa accounted for 2.60% of 2025 value. African demand moves from USD 84.8 million in 2025 to USD 145.5 million by 2035, a 5.55% CAGR. South Africa builds the Toyota Hilux in Durban and the Ford Ranger at Silverton, and bakkies are among the country's best-selling vehicles, which makes South Africa the center of African cover demand.

RealTruck Dominates the Brand Portfolio While Challengers Compete on Price and Technology
The Tonneau Covers market is concentrated at the top. RealTruck owns most of the leading North American brands, and its August 2026 purchase of LEER Group added the main truck cap names. A second tier of listed and private challengers competes with lower prices, made-in-USA claims or new technology, while Australian and Asian makers serve the ute markets.
The Multi-Brand Leader
RealTruck, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, sells BAK hard folding covers such as the BAKFlip MX4, UnderCover hard folding and hinged one-piece covers, TruXedo soft and hard roll-up covers, Extang soft folding covers, and Retrax and Roll-N-Lock retractable covers. Primary Interview Insights
Which cover types are customers choosing now?
Installers told us hard folding and retractable covers now lead their sales by value. Buyers who chose soft roll-up covers a decade ago often trade up when they replace the truck.
How have aluminum tariffs affected pricing?
Suppliers said they raised prices on aluminum covers in steps through 2025 and 2026. Some shifted sourcing to North American extrusions to limit exposure.
Are automakers selling more covers at the dealer?
Dealer accessory managers said covers are among the easiest add-ons to finance with the truck. OEM-branded programs also reduce fitment questions for buyers.
Is there demand for powered or solar covers?
Retailers said powered covers sell mainly on premium and electric pickups. Solar covers draw interest from campers and trades, but buyers want proof of output and durability.
How do ute markets differ?
Australian distributors told us roller shutters and canopies compete directly with tonneau covers. Buyers there care most about dust sealing and load ratings.
