Electrified Thermal and Battery Systems Are Taking Over From Engine Sensing as the Growth Engine for Automotive Pressure Sensors

Radial Insights values the global automotive pressure sensors market at USD 9.62 billion in 2025, rising to USD 10.23 billion in 2026 and USD 17.81 billion by 2035, a 6.35% CAGR over 2025-2035. The value pool is shifting away from intake manifold and fuel rail sensing toward refrigerant loops, brake-by-wire modules and sealed battery enclosures.

Our scope covers pressure sensing elements and packaged sensor modules fitted to passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks, whether supplied to vehicle makers and Tier 1 system builders or sold as replacement parts. It includes manifold absolute pressure (MAP), barometric (BAP), fuel, oil, brake, transmission, refrigerant, tire pressure monitoring (TPMS) and battery pack pressure devices. We exclude standalone test and calibration equipment, workshop pressure gauges, the radio and receiver electronics of TPMS kits, and industrial or off-highway sensors that never enter an on-road vehicle.

Battery pack safety sensing is the fastest-growing application at a 13.80% CAGR, because pressure is one of the earliest measurable signals of a cell venting event and Chinese, European and US safety rules are pushing makers to detect thermal runaway before smoke reaches the cabin. HVAC and thermal management follows at 9.30%, carried by heat pumps that run refrigerant at far higher pressures than legacy air conditioning. Engine and powertrain sensing still holds the largest installed base, yet its rate falls to 3.10% as combustion volumes plateau.

Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest and the fastest-growing region, expanding at 7.10% a year. China alone built 34.531 million vehicles in 2025 according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, and new energy vehicles passed half of domestic sales. Europe ranks second on value, helped by Euro 7, which applies to new car and van types from 29 November 2026 and tightens on-board monitoring.

Supplier results confirm the direction. Sensata Technologies reported Automotive segment revenue of USD 2,111.7 million for 2025, and its third quarter 2026 Automotive revenue climbed to USD 555.8 million. Melexis launched 19 products in 2025 and reported annual sales of EUR 839.6 million. The automotive pressure sensors market is therefore growing faster than vehicle output, which CAAM expects to rise only about 1% in China during 2026.

MEMS Capacitive Sensing Outpaces Piezoresistive Designs on Power Budget

MEMS piezoresistive dies remain the workhorse for MAP, BAP and brake booster sensing, and they grow at 6.10% because almost every new electronic brake and thermal loop adds at least one. MEMS capacitive sensors grow faster at 7.20% since their very low current draw suits battery-powered TPMS modules and always-on battery enclosure monitors; Infineon's XENSIV KP464 and KP466 barometric parts, for example, use capacitive measurement over SPI. Ceramic thick-film elements, common in oil and fuel lines, slow to 4.90% as combustion content stalls. Thin-film strain gauge sensors on steel diaphragms grow at 5.60%, supported by high-pressure brake-by-wire and CO2 refrigerant circuits that need media isolation above 100 bar.

Battery Pack Safety Is the Fastest Application at 13.80%

Battery pack pressure sensors are a young category, so a small base compounds quickly at 13.80%. Each pack needs at least one, and makers increasingly specify two for redundancy. HVAC and thermal management grows at 9.30% because heat pumps add high-side and low-side pressure-temperature sensors plus coolant loop monitoring. TPMS rises at 6.90% as mandates spread and sensors migrate to Bluetooth and smart-tire functions. Brake systems grow at 6.40% on brake-by-wire. Engine and powertrain trails at 3.10%, while transmission and others grows at 3.60%.

Heavy Commercial Vehicles Grow Fastest Among Vehicle Types

Heavy trucks carry air-brake, tire, fuel, exhaust aftertreatment and battery pressure points, and electric trucks add more, so the heavy commercial segment grows at 6.80%. Light commercial vehicles follow at 6.50% as electric vans scale in Europe and China. Passenger cars grow at 6.20%, the lowest rate but on by far the largest volume base.

Battery Electric Content Growth Offsets Lost Engine Sensors

A battery electric car loses MAP, fuel, oil and exhaust sensors, yet gains refrigerant, coolant, brake and pack sensors, which is why the battery electric segment grows at 12.60%. Hybrid electric models carry both sets and rise at 8.40%. Combustion-only vehicles grow at just 1.90% as their production share shrinks across China and Europe.

OEM Fitment Leads, Aftermarket Follows the Vehicle Parc

OEM supply grows at 6.50% because new content arrives first in factory programs. The aftermarket grows at 5.40%, driven by TPMS sensor replacement after battery depletion, typically within 5 to 10 years, and by MAP and oil pressure replacements on an aging combustion fleet.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Heat Pumps Push Refrigerant Pressure Sensing Into Every Electric Platform

Electric vehicles reuse cabin heat pumps to protect winter range, and R744 (CO2) systems run at pressures several times higher than R1234yf air conditioning. Each loop needs pressure-temperature sensors on both sides of the compressor. Melexis built its Triphibian technology to measure gas and liquid media from 2 to 70 bar in an SO16 package, a range that fits refrigerant and coolant loops. With China producing more than 16 million new energy vehicles in 2025, per CAAM data published in January 2026, this trend alone adds millions of sensing points a year.

Battery Enclosure Monitoring Moves From Option to Requirement

Pack makers now treat a sudden pressure rise inside the enclosure as an early warning of cell venting. Honeywell's BPS series is one of the dedicated automotive-grade battery pressure sensors aimed at this job. China's GB 38031-2025 battery safety standard, which requires that packs do not catch fire or explode after thermal runaway, takes effect for new type approvals in July 2026, and it is the strongest single push behind our 13.80% CAGR for battery pack safety sensing.

Sensor Suppliers Are Leaning on Automotive While Industrial Demand Recovers

Sensata's October 2026 results showed third quarter revenue of USD 1,003.6 million, up 7.7%, with Automotive at USD 555.8 million and a 28.4% segment margin. Melexis reported 2025 sales of EUR 839.6 million in February 2026, down 10%, but guided to second-half 2026 growth. Infineon closed fiscal 2025 in November 2025 with revenue of EUR 14.662 billion and guided to moderate growth in fiscal 2026. These figures show auto sensing holding up better than broader semiconductor demand.

Digital Interfaces and Functional Safety Replace Analog Outputs

Buyers want SENT, SPI and LIN outputs with diagnostics instead of ratiometric analog signals. Melexis's MLX90824 provides SENT output and an NTC input, is developed as a Safety Element out of Context under ISO 26262, and supports ASIL B integration, with operation from -40 C to 160 C. This shift lifts the average selling price of a pressure channel even as die costs fall.

Restraints and Challenges

Combustion Content Is Disappearing Faster Than Some Suppliers Planned

Every battery electric car removes four to six engine-related pressure points. Suppliers with heavy exposure to MAP, fuel rail and oil pressure sensing face a shrinking core even while total market value rises. Our engine and powertrain CAGR of 3.10% hides steeper declines in markets such as Norway and China where electric share is highest.

Program Cancellations Create Revenue Volatility

Electric vehicle program changes can strand tooling and capacity. Sensata's third quarter 2026 earnings release includes a USD 24.0 million termination payment from a customer that cancelled an electric vehicle program, equal to 2.6 percentage points of organic growth. Such payments soften the blow for one quarter but signal that planned volumes did not arrive.

Price Pressure From Chinese Sensor Makers

Domestic Chinese suppliers have moved from TPMS into MAP, brake and refrigerant sensing, and they price aggressively for local vehicle makers that built 34.531 million vehicles in 2025. Price competition on mature MAP and TPMS parts is the main reason our value CAGR for engine sensing runs below unit growth.

Tariffs and Currency Swings Distort Margins

Sensata's Q1 2026 guidance included about USD 12 million of expected tariff recovery, and its Q4 2026 outlook reflects trade policies in effect as of 26 October 2026. Melexis estimated that EUR/USD movements cut 2025 sales by about 2%. Sensor makers with plants in Mexico, China and Europe must re-route flows each time a duty schedule changes, adding cost and qualification work.

Growth Drivers

Battery Safety Rules Turn Pack Pressure Sensing Into Standard Content

China's GB 38031-2025 standard requires that a battery pack gives occupants warning and does not catch fire or explode after a single cell enters thermal runaway. A pressure sensor inside the enclosure detects the gas release within seconds, well before temperature sensors on distant cells react. With China producing more than 16 million new energy vehicles in 2025 and exporting 2.615 million of them, pack makers such as CATL and BYD supply the largest base of enclosures in the world. Europe and North America follow as their own battery safety regulations converge on early detection. We assume one to two pressure sensors per pack, rising toward two as redundancy becomes common in premium models. This driver adds about +1.3% of annual growth to the automotive pressure sensors market over the forecast period, and it explains why battery pack safety is the fastest application at 13.80%. Suppliers including Honeywell, Infineon, Sensata and TE Connectivity now publish dedicated battery-safety sensor lines, which shows buyers have moved from pilots to series sourcing.

Heat Pumps and Integrated Thermal Modules Multiply Sensing Points

An integrated thermal module on a modern electric car routes refrigerant and coolant through valves, chillers and plates that each need pressure and temperature feedback. By our count, a conventional air conditioning loop uses one or two pressure sensors, while an R744 heat pump with a coolant manifold can use four to six. Melexis's Triphibian family covers 2 to 70 bar for gas and liquid media, and Infineon and Sensata market comparable parts. Heat pump fitment rises with every new electric platform in Europe, where winter range is a key buying factor, and in China, where makers such as BYD standardize integrated thermal units. We estimate this shift contributes roughly +1.1 percentage points to the overall CAGR and drives the 9.30% rate for HVAC and thermal management. Because high-pressure CO2 sensing requires steel or ceramic media isolation, it also lifts average prices per channel, a welcome offset to price erosion in mature MAP parts.

Brake-by-Wire, TPMS Expansion and Euro 7 Monitoring Lift Chassis Sensing

Brake-by-wire and integrated electronic brake units replace vacuum boosters, and each unit relies on several high-accuracy pressure sensors to modulate braking without a mechanical fallback. Bosch, Continental and ZF all supply such units at scale. TPMS adds a further layer: Infineon's SP49 sensor supports auto-positioning, inflation assistance, blowout detection and load detection, and it can scale to Bluetooth Low Energy, extending TPMS from a legal warning into a source of tire wear and load data. Euro 7, which applies to new car and van types from 29 November 2026 and all new cars from 29 November 2027, extends emissions oversight to brake particles and tire abrasion and demands longer durability for on-board monitoring. Together these chassis and compliance factors account for close to +0.9% of annual growth and keep brake systems at a 6.40% CAGR and TPMS at 6.90%.

Opportunities

Smart Tire and Load Sensing Services

TPMS sensors that measure acceleration, load and tread signals can feed fleet software. Melexis's MLX91805 smart tire sensor targets heavy-duty vehicles with load monitoring, and Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear and Continental all sell tire data services. Sensor suppliers that bundle firmware and data rights stand to earn recurring revenue on top of hardware.

Aftermarket Replacement of First-Generation EV Sensors

Electric vehicles sold in China and Europe between 2018 and 2022 are now entering their second ownership cycle. Their TPMS batteries, refrigerant sensors and coolant pressure sensors will need replacement through the 2030s. Distributors and remanufacturers that build catalogs for these platforms early can capture a share of a channel that grows at 5.40% a year.

Five Suppliers Control Most OEM Pressure Sensing, but Chip Makers Are Moving Up the Value Chain

The automotive pressure sensors market combines module makers that sell finished, media-isolated sensors to vehicle makers and Tier 1s with semiconductor firms that sell MEMS dies and sensor ICs. Scale in automotive qualification, long product lifetimes and functional safety documentation keep the top tier stable, while Chinese firms compete hard on price in TPMS and MAP sensors.

System and Module Leaders

Robert Bosch is one of the largest suppliers of MEMS pressure sensors to the auto industry and pairs them with its own brake, engine and thermal systems, which gives it captive demand. Sensata Technologies, which also owns the Schrader TPMS brand, is a leading independent supplier of brake, refrigerant, transmission and TPMS sensors; its Automotive segment earned USD 2,111.7 million in 2025. DENSO supplies pressure sensors inside its own engine and thermal products for Toyota and other Japanese makers, and Continental sells TPMS and brake pressure sensing tied to its chassis business.

Semiconductor Specialists

Infineon Technologies sells XENSIV MEMS pressure sensors, including the SP49 TPMS sensor with a 32-bit Arm M0+ core and the KP464 and KP466 barometric parts for engine control and pneumatic seat comfort. NXP Semiconductors supplies TPMS and MEMS pressure ICs, and STMicroelectronics offers automotive MEMS pressure dies. Melexis targets ASIL-capable pressure sensor ICs such as the MLX90822, MLX90824 and Triphibian MLX90833, and focuses on engine management, thermal loops and smart tire sensing.

Interconnect and Industrial Sensing Groups

TE Connectivity and Amphenol bring connector and harness know-how to pressure sensing, selling media-isolated sensors for brake, fuel and refrigerant lines, often with integrated connectors that reduce assembly steps. Honeywell offers the BPS series for battery enclosure pressure sensing, aimed at early thermal runaway detection. TDK supplies piezoresistive and ceramic sensing elements to module makers.

How Competition Is Shifting

Three moves define the next five years. First, chip makers are adding signal processing, diagnostics and digital interfaces so that a single IC replaces a small module. Second, module makers are chasing battery and thermal content to replace engine sensors. Third, Chinese suppliers are winning local OEM programs and starting to export, which keeps price pressure high. Suppliers with both functional safety credentials and low-cost manufacturing in Asia are best placed to gain share.
