SUV and Pickup Fleets Push Highway Terrain Tires Toward USD 42.96 Billion by 2035

Highway terrain tires generated USD 27.40 Billion worldwide in 2025, and Radial Insights expects USD 28.66 Billion in 2026 and USD 42.96 Billion by 2035, a 4.60% CAGR for the decade. These are the quiet, long-wearing all-season tires fitted to most crossovers, SUVs and pickups that spend their lives on paved roads.

The Highway Terrain Tires market covers H/T and highway all-season tires in P-metric, LT-metric and Euro-metric sizes for crossovers, SUVs, pickups and light vans, sold both as original equipment and in the replacement channel. Examples include the Michelin Defender LTX M/S, Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza, Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse HT and BFGoodrich Advantage Control HT. We exclude all-terrain (A/T), mud-terrain (M/T) and rugged-terrain tires, dedicated winter tires, and passenger car touring tires fitted to sedans and hatchbacks. Values are at manufacturer selling prices.

Demand rests on the vehicle mix. Light trucks, which in US data include SUVs, crossovers and pickups, made up 13,598,345 of the 16,348,337 light vehicles sold in the United States in 2025, or about 83.2%. Worldwide, the International Energy Agency reported that SUVs reached 48% of global car sales in 2023. USTMA counted 37.7 million replacement light truck tires shipped in the US in 2025, one of the largest single pools of H/T demand anywhere.

Battery electric vehicles are the fastest-growing segment at an 11.40% CAGR, as Hankook's iON HT and Kumho's Road Venture HT bring EV-rated highway designs to electric pickups and large SUVs. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at 5.75% a year, while North America holds the largest share at 38.60%.

Two forces shape pricing in the Highway Terrain Tires market. Rim sizes keep rising: Hankook said tires of 18 inches and larger were 47.8% of its 2025 passenger and light truck sales. Trade policy also matters, with the US 25% Section 232 tariff on imported auto parts in force from May 2025 and USITC sunset reviews of tire anti-dumping orders opened in June 2026.

Compact and Mid-Size Crossovers Lead and Grow Fastest at 5.20%

Compact and mid-size SUVs and crossovers are the leading vehicle type, because models such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Tesla Model Y sell in the millions each year and ride on highway designs from the factory. They also post the fastest rate at 5.20%. Full-size SUVs grow at 4.30% and pickups at 4.10%, held back by a higher share of A/T fitments on trucks. Vans and light commercial vehicles grow slowest at 3.80%.

Euro-Metric Sizes Gain at 5.00% While P-Metric Keeps the Lead

P-metric sizes lead because most crossovers and SUVs use passenger-load tires, and they grow at 4.30%. LT-metric sizes grow at 4.70% as heavier electric pickups need higher load ranges; Kumho's Road Venture HT, for example, carries a 50,000-mile warranty on LT sizes and 75,000 miles on P-metric sizes. Euro-metric and XL sizes, common on European and Asian SUVs, grow at 5.00%.

Twenty-Inch-Plus Fitments Expand at 6.80%

The 18 to 19 inch group leads today and grows at 5.10%. Tires of 20 inches and above grow fastest at 6.80% as full-size SUVs and EVs move up in wheel size, while the 15 to 17 inch group grows at only 2.10% as older vehicles leave the fleet. Goodyear's Lawton, Oklahoma expansion is aimed at larger rim diameters for this reason.

Battery Electric Vehicles Post an 11.40% CAGR

Internal combustion engine vehicles remain the leading powertrain but grow at 3.20%. Hybrids grow at 6.10%, and battery electric vehicles grow fastest at 11.40% because EVs need higher load capacity, low rolling resistance and noise control. Hankook launched the iON HT for electric light trucks in July 2025 with up to 80,000-mile treadlife and a 900 UTQG treadwear grade.

Replacement Outpaces OE at 4.95%

Replacement is the leading channel and grows at 4.95%, supported by an aging SUV fleet and 37.7 million US replacement light truck tire shipments in 2025. Original equipment grows at 3.70%, tied to vehicle production cycles.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

EV-Specific Highway Terrain Designs Arrive

Tire makers now build H/T lines for electric trucks and SUVs. Hankook showed the iON HT at Electrify Expo in June 2025 and put it on sale in August 2025 in 5 sizes from 18 to 22 inches. Kumho introduced the Road Venture HT in May 2026 in more than 40 sizes from 15 to 22 inches, marketed as EV compatible. These products carry higher prices than standard H/T tires and lift average revenue per unit in the Highway Terrain Tires market.

Longer Warranties Become a Selling Point

Mileage warranties have moved up. BFGoodrich's Advantage Control HT, launched in April 2025 in 22 sizes, carries a 70,000-mile warranty, and the brand claims about 10% more tread life than the product it replaced. Hankook offers up to 80,000 miles on the iON HT. Longer warranties help premium brands defend share against value imports.

New Generations Roll Out Across Asia and Europe

Yokohama began selling the Geolandar H/T4, its fourth-generation highway design, in Australia and Thailand in April 2026 in 51 sizes, with 12 sizes reaching Europe in June 2026. Global launches show that H/T demand is spreading beyond North America as SUV sales rise in Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

Brand Portfolios Are Being Reshaped

Goodyear completed the sale of the Dunlop brand to Sumitomo Rubber in May 2025 for USD 735 million gross, and in October 2025 made Cooper its only second-tier brand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, keeping Cooper's 4x4 focus. Such moves change how H/T lines are priced and positioned across tiers.

Restraints and Challenges

Flat Replacement Volumes in Mature Markets

Michelin reported that global passenger and light truck replacement volumes rose only 1% in 2025 and were flat in North America. USTMA's July 2026 forecast, available on ustires.org, projects total US shipments falling from 336.3 million units in 2025 to 330.3 million in 2026, with replacement light truck shipments easing from 37.7 million to 37.1 million.

Tariffs and Trade Remedies Raise Costs

The US 25% Section 232 tariff on imported auto parts took effect in May 2025 and covers tires according to law-firm summaries. The USITC opened sunset reviews in June 2026 of anti-dumping orders on passenger and light truck tires from South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand and decided in September 2026 to run full reviews, which keeps sourcing costs uncertain for importers.

Competition From A/T Tires on Pickups

Pickup owners in North America increasingly choose all-terrain tires for looks and light off-road use. That trend caps H/T growth in pickups at about 4.10% a year, below the 5.20% rate for crossovers.

Weak Demand in Europe

Tyres Europe, the former ETRMA, reported consumer replacement tire sales down 2% in 2025 and down 5% in the fourth quarter, with summer tires down 7%. Soft European demand limits H/T growth there to 4.10% a year.

Growth Drivers

A Fleet Dominated by SUVs and Pickups

Light trucks accounted for 13,598,345 of the 16,348,337 light vehicles sold in the United States in 2025, about 83.2%, up from a record 82% reading reported for 2024. The International Energy Agency reported that SUVs reached 48% of global car sales in 2023. Each of these vehicles leaves the factory on four tires and returns to the replacement market every three to five years, and most of them run highway terrain designs. USTMA counted 6.4 million OE light truck tires and 37.7 million replacement light truck tires shipped in the US in 2025, before counting the P-metric tires fitted to crossovers. Toyota, Ford, General Motors and Hyundai keep adding SUV and crossover nameplates. Replacement demand follows this mix with a lag of three to five years, so the 2025 sales base keeps feeding H/T demand into the early 2030s. We attribute about +2.3 points of the 4.60% CAGR to this fleet mix effect.

Bigger Wheels and Heavier Vehicles

Larger wheels raise the value of every tire sold. Hankook said tires of 18 inches and larger made up 47.8% of its 2025 passenger and light truck sales. Goodyear is spending USD 320 million over four years at Lawton, Oklahoma to add about 10 million units of capacity aimed at larger rim diameters, and Hankook's Clarksville, Tennessee plant is expanding to 10 million passenger and light truck tires a year within a USD 2.2 billion local investment. A 20-inch H/T tire typically sells for well above a 17-inch equivalent. Retailers also earn higher margins on these sizes, which encourages them to stock premium H/T lines. The shift in size alone adds roughly +1.2 percentage points of annual value growth.

Electrification of Pickups and Large SUVs

Electric trucks and SUVs weigh more and deliver instant torque, which wears tires faster and demands higher load ratings. Hankook launched the iON HT for electric light trucks and full-size SUVs in July 2025 with an XL load rating and up to 80,000 miles of treadlife, and Kumho's Road Venture HT, introduced in May 2026, is sold as EV compatible across more than 40 sizes. Ford, Rivian, General Motors and Tesla all sell electric pickups or large SUVs that use highway designs. Fleet buyers report faster wear on EV pickups than on gasoline versions. Shorter replacement cycles and premium pricing for EV-rated tires add about +1.1 points a year to growth in the Highway Terrain Tires market.

Opportunities

Asia Pacific SUV Growth

SUV sales are rising fast in India, Southeast Asia and Australia. Yokohama's April 2026 launch of the Geolandar H/T4 in Australia and Thailand, and growing SUV portfolios at Apollo, CEAT and MRF in India, point to strong H/T demand outside North America.

Local Production Behind Tariff Walls

Tariffs and trade remedies favor tire makers with US plants. Hankook's Clarksville expansion and Goodyear's Lawton project position both companies to supply H/T sizes without import duties.

North America Holds the Largest H/T Share While Asia Pacific Adds the Most Growth

North America

North America holds 38.60% of the Highway Terrain Tires market, worth USD 10.58 Billion in 2025, and is forecast to reach USD 14.92 Billion by 2035 at a 3.50% CAGR. US light trucks took about 83.2% of 16.35 million light vehicle sales in 2025, and USTMA counted 37.7 million US replacement light truck tires.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for 31.50% of 2025 value, about USD 8.63 Billion, and grows fastest at 5.75% a year to USD 15.10 Billion by 2035. Yokohama launched the Geolandar H/T4 in Australia and Thailand in April 2026 in 51 sizes, and SUV models now lead new car sales in India and Australia.

Europe

Europe represents 15.20% of the market, or USD 4.17 Billion in 2025, and should reach USD 6.22 Billion by 2035 at a 4.10% CAGR. Tyres Europe reported consumer replacement sales down 2% in 2025, while Yokohama brought 12 Geolandar H/T4 sizes to European buyers in June 2026.

Latin America

Latin America holds 6.40% of 2025 revenue, about USD 1.75 Billion, rising to USD 2.83 Billion by 2035 at a 4.90% CAGR. Brazil applied anti-dumping duties on Chinese passenger tires in December 2025, and pickups such as the Toyota Hilux and Fiat Toro are among the best sellers in Brazil and Argentina.

Middle East

The Middle East accounts for 5.20% of the market, worth USD 1.43 Billion in 2025, and should reach USD 2.43 Billion by 2035 at a 5.50% CAGR. Large SUVs such as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol dominate Gulf fleets in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and long desert highways favor durable H/T compounds.

Africa

Africa holds 3.10% of 2025 value, about USD 0.85 Billion, and grows at 5.40% a year to USD 1.44 Billion by 2035. South Africa's light pickup segment, led by the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger built locally, is the largest H/T user in Africa.

Five Global Brands Set the Pace in H/T Tires as Korean and Chinese Makers Push Value and EV Lines

The Highway Terrain Tires market is led by global premium brands with deep OE relationships, followed by Korean and Japanese challengers and a large value tier from China and India. OE fitments on popular SUVs often decide replacement choices, so winning a platform such as a best-selling crossover or full-size pickup can lock in years of aftermarket demand. Premium brands also lean on mileage warranties of 70,000 miles or more to justify higher prices.

Global Premium Leaders

Michelin sells the Defender LTX M/S range, a benchmark for SUV and pickup highway tires, and its BFGoodrich brand launched the Advantage Control HT in April 2025. Bridgestone's Dueler H/L Alenza targets premium SUVs. Goodyear offers the Wrangler Workhorse HT and Wrangler Steadfast HT, and after selling Dunlop in May 2025 it uses Cooper's Discoverer Road+Trail as its value 4x4 line. Continental sells the TerrainContact H/T, and its General brand offers the Grabber HTS60 for trucks.

Japanese and Korean Challengers

Yokohama Rubber's Geolandar H/T G056 and the new Geolandar H/T4 give it a strong position in Asia Pacific and Australia. Toyo Tire's Open Country H/T II and Sumitomo Rubber Industries' Falken Wildpeak H/T02 compete for pickup buyers. Hankook Tire sells the Dynapro HT and moved early into electric trucks with the iON HT in 2025, while Kumho Tire offers the Crugen HT51 and the 2026 Road Venture HT.

Regional and Value Suppliers

Nokian Tyres serves Nordic SUV owners with all-season and highway designs. Apollo Tyres, CEAT and MRF supply India's fast-growing SUV fleet, and Apollo's Apterra H/T is sold in several export markets. Sailun Group and Shandong Linglong Tire are leading Chinese value suppliers of light truck and SUV tires, though US trade remedies limit their access to the largest H/T market.
