Electric autos from India lift three-wheeler revenue to USD 28.47 Billion by 2035 even as global unit sales reset

Radial Insights values three-wheeler sales at USD 15.60 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 16.57 Billion in 2026 and USD 28.47 Billion by 2035, which equals a 6.20% CAGR over the forecast period.

The three-wheeler market in this report covers new passenger and cargo three-wheelers with a driver in front, sold as auto-rickshaws, tuk-tuks, e-rickshaws and cargo trikes, at ex-showroom prices including the battery for electric models. It excludes two-wheelers with sidecars, three-wheeled leisure motorcycles such as reverse trikes, used vehicles, battery leasing fees billed separately, spare parts and tires.

About 4.5 million three-wheelers were sold worldwide in 2025 according to the International Energy Agency, and more than 1.2 million of them were electric, a share above 25%. India alone sold 801,431 electric three-wheelers in 2025, about 67% of the global electric total, and recorded 830,819 electric units in FY2026. Electric models carry higher prices than CNG or petrol autos, so the three-wheeler market grows faster in value than in units, and average selling prices rise through the forecast even where volumes are flat.

Lithium-ion electric three-wheelers are the fastest-growing segment at 14.60% a year, and high-speed L5 electric models grow at 13.80%. Cargo carriers grow faster than passenger carriers, at 6.90% against 5.70%, because of e-commerce and parcel delivery in Indian and Southeast Asian cities.

Africa is the fastest-growing region at an 8.40% CAGR as Kenya, Nigeria and Egypt add electric tuk-tuks, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 79.30% of revenue, driven by India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Passenger carriers lead revenue while cargo carriers grow faster

Passenger autos remain the bulk of the three-wheeler market in India, Bangladesh, Egypt and Southeast Asia and grow at 5.70%. Cargo carriers grow at 6.90% because parcel, grocery and water-can delivery firms in Indian cities are buying electric cargo models such as Euler's HiLoad and Bajaj's Riki C4005, which launched at Rs 2.01 lakh in November 2025. Cargo buyers also replace vehicles more often because daily distances are longer.

Electric L5 autos are the fastest-growing fuel type

High-speed L5 electric autos grow at 13.80% a year, led by Mahindra's UDO launched in February 2026 at Rs 3.59 lakh with an 11.7 kWh battery, Piaggio's Apé E-City Ultra with a 236 km range and 10.2 kWh LFP pack, and Montra's Super Auto with 160 km of range. Low-speed e-rickshaws grow at 7.60%, slower because many are sold unregistered and cheaper lead-acid models dominate. CNG and LPG autos slow to 2.40% after EVs took about 60% of Indian three-wheeler registrations in January to September 2025, when CNG fell to 25%, while petrol grows at 1.20% and diesel at only 0.60%.

Lithium-ion batteries replace lead-acid at 14.60% a year

Lithium-ion three-wheelers expand at 14.60% versus 1.90% for lead-acid models. LFP packs of 5.4 to 11.7 kWh, as used in the Bajaj Riki, Piaggio and Mahindra models, give ranges of 149 km to more than 200 km, which lets drivers complete a full shift on one charge. Lithium packs also last several years longer than lead-acid batteries, lowering lifetime cost for owners.

Fleet operators outgrow owner-drivers

Fleet operators grow at 8.10% against 5.40% for individual owner-drivers. Battery swap and leasing models, such as the Skoot and Sun Mobility service in Nairobi priced from KES 1,200 a day, lower the entry cost for drivers who rent rather than buy. Delivery companies and ride-hailing aggregators also buy in batches, which favors large OEMs with fleet sales teams.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Electric share passes 60% of Indian three-wheeler retail

FADA retail data show 13,63,412 three-wheelers sold in India in FY2026, up 11.68% and a third straight annual record, with electric models taking 60.95% of retail. Electric three-wheeler sales reached a record 797,729 units in calendar 2025 and 830,819 units in FY2026, when Mahindra sold 101,905, Bajaj 89,604 and TVS 27,831. The FY2026 electric total was 19% above the 698,914 units of FY2025.

Large ICE makers enter the e-rickshaw segment

Bajaj Auto entered e-rickshaws with the Riki range in November 2025, pricing the P4005 passenger model at Rs 1.91 lakh with a 5.4 kWh battery and 149 km of range, and TVS Motor grew electric three-wheeler sales by 1,541% in FY2026. Their entry brings dealer networks, warranties and financing to a segment once led by small assemblers such as YC Electric, Saera and Dilli Electric.

Exports from India accelerate

Three-wheeler exports rose about 2% to roughly 3.1 lakh units in FY2025, then jumped 43% to 219,276 units in the first half of FY2026 and about 70% in the October to December 2025 quarter. In April 2026, exports reached 50,655 units against 27,524 a year earlier, while production climbed to 108,461 units. Bajaj's commercial vehicle exports, mainly three-wheelers, rose 49% to 2,82,373 units in FY2026, with demand from the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Battery swapping and city replacement programs in Africa

Skoot, Car and General and Sun Mobility launched a battery-swap electric tuk-tuk in Nairobi in February 2026, with energy costs about 30% below diesel. In Egypt, Giza began replacing tuk-tuks with small cars in November 2025 and Cairo followed in December 2025 at about EGP 200,000 per car, targeting part of an estimated 5 million unlicensed tuk-tuks.

Restraints and Challenges

Subsidy reductions raise electric auto prices

India's PM E-DRIVE scheme, extended to 31 March 2028 in August 2025 according to a Press Information Bureau release, halved the electric three-wheeler incentive in March 2026 to Rs 2,500 per kWh with a cap of Rs 12,500, down from Rs 5,000 per kWh and Rs 25,000. The L5 incentive had already closed in December 2025 after reaching its target, and Bajaj said in its Q4 FY26 results that the phase-out hit margins on electric three-wheelers. By 27 January 2026, 2.93 lakh vehicles had been sold against a scheme target of 3.16 lakh.

Global unit sales are falling outside India

The IEA Global EV Outlook 2026 reports global three-wheeler sales of about 4.5 million in 2025, down about 16%, and China's electric three-wheeler sales fell about 3% to 290,000. Slower demand in China and parts of Southeast Asia limits volume growth and keeps price competition intense.

Urban bans and replacement programs

Cities such as Cairo and Giza are replacing tuk-tuks with four-wheel minicars, and other cities restrict three-wheelers on main roads for safety reasons. These rules cap passenger demand in some African and Middle Eastern markets and push makers toward cargo models.

Battery safety and quality concerns

Low-cost e-rickshaws with uncertified lead-acid and lithium packs face fire and quality complaints. Stricter battery safety testing raises costs for small assemblers and may push some out of the market, although this also benefits larger certified brands.

Growth Drivers

Lower running costs of electric autos for drivers

An electric auto costs far less to run per kilometer than a CNG or petrol model, which matters to drivers earning daily fares. Battery-swap services in Nairobi claim energy savings of about 30% against diesel, and Indian drivers report similar or larger savings against CNG. With Mahindra, Bajaj, TVS and Piaggio all selling L5 models with 150 km to 236 km of range, payback periods have shortened to two to three years. Radial Insights credits lower running costs with about +1.6% of annual growth in the three-wheeler market through 2035, the largest single effect in our model.

Last-mile logistics and e-commerce delivery

Parcel, grocery and food delivery networks in Indian, Indonesian and Philippine cities need small cargo vehicles that can enter narrow streets. Cargo three-wheelers such as Euler's HiLoad, Omega Seiki's electric models and Bajaj's Riki C4005 serve this demand, and fleet buyers often purchase dozens of units at a time. India's domestic three-wheeler sales reached 8.36 lakh units in FY2026, up 12.8%, according to SIAM data, after 741,420 units in FY2025. We estimate cargo and fleet demand adds close to 1.0 percentage point to yearly market growth.

Export demand from Africa, the Middle East and Latin America

Indian makers are winning orders abroad: three-wheeler exports rose 43% in H1 FY2026 and April 2026 exports reached 50,655 units against 27,524 a year earlier. Bajaj's commercial vehicle exports rose 49% in FY2026, and Africa is shifting toward electric tuk-tuks with swap networks. Exports add roughly +0.8% to annual CAGR, and they also explain why Africa grows the fastest among regions.

Opportunities

Battery swapping and leasing networks

Swap networks from Sun Mobility and others separate the battery cost from the vehicle price, which makes electric autos affordable for owner-drivers. Expanding these services across Indian tier-2 cities, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda opens recurring revenue for OEMs and energy partners, and gives lenders more confidence in electric vehicle loans. A driver who leases a battery from KES 1,200 a day avoids most of the upfront cost of a lithium pack.

Electric cargo trikes for Southeast Asia and Latin America

Indonesia, the Philippines, Peru and Colombia use three-wheelers for local delivery but still rely mostly on petrol models. Indian and Chinese makers can offer lithium-ion cargo trikes adapted to these markets, using the export channels already built for petrol models. Latin America grows at 6.70% a year in our forecast, so even a modest electric share there adds meaningful volume for exporters.

Asia Pacific dominates three-wheeler revenue while Africa adds share fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 79.30% of the three-wheeler market, about USD 12.37 Billion in 2025, and grows at 6.00% to USD 22.15 Billion by 2035. India's 830,819 electric three-wheeler sales in FY2026 anchor the APAC total, alongside China's cargo trikes and passenger autos in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia and the Philippines. India alone accounted for about 67% of global electric three-wheeler sales in 2025.

North America

North America accounts for a 0.90% share, about USD 0.14 Billion in 2025, and grows at 3.20% to USD 0.19 Billion by 2035. North America demand is limited to utility trikes, resort shuttles and small electric delivery vehicles on campuses and in tourist towns.

Europe

Europe holds a 2.40% share, worth USD 0.37 Billion in 2025, and grows at 4.10% to USD 0.56 Billion by 2035. Türkiye sold about 48,000 electric three-wheelers in 2025 according to the IEA, and Italy's Piaggio Apé keeps a niche in European cities.

Latin America

Latin America takes a 4.10% share, about USD 0.64 Billion in 2025, and grows at 6.70% to USD 1.22 Billion by 2035. Peru, Colombia and Mexico use mototaxis widely, and Indian exporters such as Bajaj and TVS supply much of Latin America demand.

Middle East

The Middle East represents a 5.60% share, valued at USD 0.87 Billion in 2025, and grows at 6.40% to USD 1.62 Billion by 2035. SIAM reported double-digit export growth to Middle East markets in FY2026, and cargo three-wheelers serve small traders across the Middle East.

Africa

Africa holds a 7.70% share, about USD 1.20 Billion in 2025, and grows the fastest at 8.40% to USD 2.69 Billion by 2035. Africa demand is led by Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda, and the Nairobi battery-swap launch in February 2026 points to a faster shift to electric tuk-tuks.
