Battery power and autonomy add about USD 14 Billion to mining truck revenue by 2035

Mine operators spent USD 22.40 Billion on mining trucks in 2025, and Radial Insights projects the category at USD 23.54 Billion in 2026 and USD 36.84 Billion by 2035, a 5.10% CAGR.

The mining trucks market in this report covers new rigid haul trucks, articulated dump trucks sold into mine sites and underground mining trucks, valued at the factory gate and including factory-fitted autonomy kits, trolley pantographs and traction batteries. It excludes used-truck sales, aftermarket parts, tires, rebuild services, autonomy software subscriptions billed separately and on-highway dump trucks used only in road construction.

Demand is anchored by copper, iron ore and gold. Komatsu commissioned its 1,000th ultra-class autonomous truck in April 2026, and Fortescue has lined up 300 to 400 zero-emission haulers from Liebherr and XCMG for delivery through 2030. Those two programs alone show how buyers are paying for higher-spec machines, which pushes average selling prices up faster than unit volumes.

Battery-electric and trolley-assist trucks are the fastest-growing segment, rising at 18.40% a year from a small base, while autonomous operation grows at 12.60%. By payload, the 200-300 ton class leads growth at 5.90% because it matches the 240 ton battery trucks now being validated in Australia.

Africa is the fastest-growing region at a 6.10% CAGR, helped by copper expansion in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds the largest share at 38.60% on the back of Australian iron ore, Indonesian nickel and Chinese coal fleets.

Rigid haul trucks lead revenue while underground trucks grow fastest by type

Rigid haul trucks such as the Caterpillar 793 and Komatsu 930E dominate open-pit copper and iron ore sites and expand at 5.30%. Underground trucks grow faster at 5.70% because deep mines are adopting battery units first: Sandvik booked about SEK 750 million from South32 for Hermosa in April 2025, and Epiroc sold a Minetruck MT42 SG to Hudbay in March 2025 as part of a SEK 100 million order. Articulated dump trucks, at 4.60%, serve smaller pits and are tied more closely to construction cycles.

The 200-300 ton class gains share as 240 ton battery trucks reach mines

Trucks of 200-300 tons grow at 5.90%, ahead of the 5.20% rate for trucks above 300 tons. Liebherr's T 264 Battery Electric and XCMG's 240 ton unit for Fortescue both sit in this band, and many miners prefer it for trolley lines and charging infrastructure. Trucks of 100-200 tons grow at 4.80%, and trucks below 100 tons grow at 4.20%, held back by quarry and coal exposure.

Battery-electric and trolley-assist trucks compound at 18.40% from a small base

Diesel-electric drive remains the installed standard and grows at 4.70%, while pure diesel mechanical trucks slow to 1.90% as orders shift. Battery-electric and trolley-assist trucks rise at 18.40% once validation fleets at Jimblebar, Kansanshi and Fortescue's Pilbara sites move into series production after 2027. LNG dual-fuel and hydrogen trucks grow at 9.80%, led by the BELAZ-7513W gas-diesel prototype shown in September 2025, which can replace up to 50% of diesel with LNG.

Autonomous trucks grow almost four times faster than manned units

Autonomous operation expands at 12.60% against 3.20% for manned trucks. Komatsu's FrontRunner fleets have moved more than 11.5 billion tons since 2008, and Caterpillar MineStar Command is standard on most new large orders in Australia. Labor shortages in remote sites, plus safety rules on powered haulage, keep this gap wide.

Metal mining outpaces coal by nearly three points of annual growth

Metal mining grows at 5.80% on copper, lithium and gold expansion, while coal mining slows to 2.10%; Caterpillar noted parked coal trucks in its 2025 commentary. Quarrying and aggregates grow at 4.30%, and oil sands and other minerals at 3.90%.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Validation fleets for 240 ton battery trucks are running in three continents

BHP, Rio Tinto and Caterpillar began trialing two Cat 793 XE Early Learner battery-electric trucks at Jimblebar in June 2026, two of seven such trucks being tested worldwide, after more than 100 hours and 200 laps. In Zambia, Hitachi Construction Machinery and First Quantum demonstrated a full-battery EH4000-based truck with trolley assist in April 2026 after a trial covering over 4,000 km and 30,000 tons hauled. Liebherr is validating the T 264 Battery Electric, which carries a 3.2 MW battery and charges at up to 6 MW in under an hour.

Autonomy has crossed from pilot to fleet standard

Komatsu commissioned its 1,000th ultra-class autonomous truck, a 930E-5AT at Nevada Gold Mines, in April 2026, with more than 500 autonomous 930E units in service. Caterpillar already reported 550 autonomous trucks across 23 sites as early as September 2022. New tenders in the Pilbara and Chile now assume autonomy-ready trucks, which lifts the value of each order.

Chinese OEMs win large export orders

Fortescue ordered 150 to 200 battery-electric 240 ton trucks from XCMG in September 2025, described as China's largest green mining equipment export order, with deliveries phased over 2028-2030. SANY and other Chinese makers are moving from domestic coal sites into Africa, Latin America and Australia with lower-priced electric models.

Underground mines electrify first

Sandvik won about SEK 160 million from Eldorado Gold in December 2025 to grow the Lamaque fleet from 2 to 12 battery units, following its record SEK 750 million South32 order in April 2025. Ventilation savings make battery trucks pay back faster underground than in open pits.

Restraints and Challenges

High upfront cost of electric fleets and charging

A battery-electric haul truck needs multi-megawatt chargers, grid upgrades and often on-site renewables. Fortescue's plan to replace 300 to 400 trucks illustrates the scale of capital involved, and smaller miners struggle to fund similar programs before 2030.

Safety and compliance rules raise operating overhead

The US Mine Safety and Health Administration's Safety Program for Surface Mobile Equipment rule requires written safety programs for powered haulage. A July 2026 MSHA notice estimates 17,798 respondents and 190,732 burden hours a year, costs that fall on truck fleet operators.

Commodity cycles and coal weakness

Caterpillar's Resource Industries profit fell 19% to USD 499 million in Q3 2025 and 24% to USD 360 million in Q4 2025, even as sales rose, and Komatsu forecast lower mining equipment demand for the year ending March 2027. Coal truck orders are the most exposed.

Emission rules and trade barriers

The EU non-road engine law, Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 (Stage V), and EPA Tier 4 Final engine limits add after-treatment cost to diesel trucks, while tariffs on steel and imported machinery raise prices for buyers in North America.

Growth Drivers

Decarbonization targets at the largest iron ore and copper miners

Fortescue aims to remove diesel from its Pilbara operations and has contracted Liebherr for 360 battery trucks by the end of 2030 plus 150 to 200 units from XCMG. BHP and Rio Tinto are jointly testing Cat 793 XE trucks, and First Quantum is working with Hitachi and ABB on full-battery haulage at Kansanshi. Each battery truck carries a price premium that we estimate at 30% to 50% over a diesel-electric equivalent once batteries and pantographs are included. Radial Insights credits this driver with about +1.4% of annual growth for the mining trucks market through 2035, the largest single contribution in our model.

Autonomy economics and labor scarcity at remote sites

Komatsu's 1,000 ultra-class autonomous trucks and FrontRunner's 11.5 billion tons hauled show that autonomy is now bankable. Remote mines in Western Australia, northern Chile and Nevada face driver shortages and fly-in fly-out costs, and autonomous trucks can run close to 24 hours a day without shift changes. Barrick's Nevada Gold Mines, BHP and Rio Tinto all expanded autonomous fleets in 2025 and 2026. Autonomy kits and the sensors, computing and redundant braking they require raise the value of each truck. We estimate autonomy adds roughly 0.9 percentage points to the market's yearly expansion rate.

Copper and critical minerals demand for electrification

Grid build-out, electric vehicles and data centers are lifting copper demand, and new projects such as South32's Hermosa in Arizona and Eldorado's Lamaque expansion in Quebec need new truck fleets. Caterpillar's order backlog reached about USD 51.2 billion at the end of 2025, up from USD 30.0 billion a year earlier, and its Resource Industries orders in Q3 2025 were led by large mining trucks. Metal mining therefore grows at 5.80% in our forecast. This demand cycle accounts for close to +0.8% of yearly CAGR across the forecast period.

Opportunities

Retrofit kits for the installed diesel-electric fleet

Thousands of diesel-electric trucks in service can be converted to trolley assist or battery packs. Hitachi's trolley-assist experience and ABB's charging systems point to a retrofit business that lowers the entry cost for mid-tier miners, who cannot replace whole fleets at once.

Africa and Central Asia greenfield copper projects

Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kazakhstan are adding copper capacity, and these sites can be designed around electric and autonomous haulage from day one, giving OEMs larger first-fit orders. Africa grows at 6.10% a year in our forecast, the fastest-growing region for new trucks.

Asia Pacific holds the largest fleet while Africa grows fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for 38.60% of the mining trucks market, or USD 8.65 Billion in 2025, and grows at 5.20% to USD 14.36 Billion by 2035. Australia's Pilbara iron ore mines run the world's largest autonomous fleets, and the APAC region also includes Chinese coal fleets and Indonesian nickel pits where SANY and XCMG trucks are common.

North America

North America holds a 19.40% share, valued at USD 4.35 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 6.68 Billion by 2035 at a 4.40% CAGR. In North America, Nevada Gold Mines hosts Komatsu's 1,000th autonomous truck, while Canadian underground mines order battery units from Sandvik and Epiroc.

Europe

Europe takes an 8.20% share, worth USD 1.84 Billion in 2025, reaching USD 2.62 Billion by 2035 at 3.60% a year. Europe hosts major OEM plants, including Liebherr and Volvo CE, and its Nordic underground mines are early adopters of battery trucks.

Latin America

Latin America represents 15.30% of revenue, about USD 3.43 Billion in 2025, and grows at 5.40% to USD 5.80 Billion by 2035. Chilean and Peruvian copper mines drive Latin America demand for 300 ton class trucks and autonomy.

Middle East

The Middle East holds a 5.10% share, worth USD 1.14 Billion in 2025, and expands at 5.90% to USD 2.03 Billion by 2035. Phosphate, gold and copper projects in Saudi Arabia and Oman lift Middle East truck orders.

Africa

Africa holds a 13.40% share, about USD 3.00 Billion in 2025, and grows the fastest at 6.10% to USD 5.43 Billion by 2035. Africa demand is led by copper in Zambia, where Hitachi and First Quantum tested a battery truck at Kansanshi, and by gold and platinum mines in South Africa and Ghana.
