Quad bikes are losing unit share to side-by-sides, yet ATV revenue keeps growing on bigger engines, Chinese exports and electric models

At USD 3.86 Billion in 2025, the global ATV market is set to reach USD 4.02 Billion in 2026 and USD 5.80 Billion by 2035, expanding at a 4.15% CAGR. Growth is slower than in side-by-side vehicles, but price mix, utility demand from farms and ranches, and a new class of electric quads keep the market moving.

Radial Insights defines the All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) market as the factory value of new straddle-seat, handlebar-steered four-wheel vehicles (quad bikes) built for off-road use, including utility, sport, youth and two-up touring models. The estimate covers gasoline and battery-electric units sold through dealers, fleet contracts and government tenders. It excludes side-by-side vehicles (UTVs), three-wheel vehicles, used units, parts, garments, accessories and aftermarket service.

Electric ATVs are the fastest-growing segment at a 14.80% CAGR from a small base, led by BRP's Can-Am Outlander Electric revealed in August 2025. Two-up and touring ATVs grow at 5.60% within type, and engines above 700cc grow at 4.90%. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at a 6.10% CAGR.

North America is the core of the market with a 57.40% share in 2025. Polaris's FY2025 annual report puts North American ATV retail at about 255,000 units in 2025, down from 265,000 in 2024, while side-by-side retail rose to about 525,000. Fewer units at higher prices is the main pattern: 2026 Honda Foreman Rubicon pricing starts at $9,749, against $6,249 for the Rancher.

Outside North America, the strongest force is China's export industry. CFMOTO reported 2025 ATV revenue of CNY 9.608 billion on 197,000 units, up 33.3%, with 69.8% of company revenue earned overseas. That volume, plus Japanese makers building in the US, keeps the global ATV market more competitive on price than at any point in the last decade.

Utility ATVs lead the type mix, while two-up models grow fastest at 5.60%

Utility ATVs, such as the Polaris Sportsman, Honda Foreman and Yamaha Grizzly, remain the largest type and grow at 3.70% on farm, ranch and hunting demand. Two-up and touring ATVs grow at 5.60% because buyers want a second seat without moving to a side-by-side. Youth ATVs grow at 4.90%, helped by Polaris youth models from $2,999, but they face more CPSC enforcement against non-compliant imports. Sport ATVs grow at only 2.60% as racing-style quads lose buyers to sport side-by-sides.

Engines above 700cc grow at 4.90% as buyers trade up

The above-700cc class grows at 4.90% because towing, plowing and two-up riding need torque, and premium trims with power steering command higher prices. The 400cc to 700cc class grows at 4.40% and covers most mid-range work machines, including Kawasaki's 2026 Brute Force 450 EPS at $7,999. Units below 400cc grow at 3.10%, held back by youth and entry-level price competition.

Electric ATVs grow at 14.80% against 3.60% for gasoline units

Electric ATVs grow at 14.80%, the fastest of any segment, from a low starting point. BRP's Outlander Electric offers 47 hp and up to 50 miles of range, and electric quads appeal to farms, hunters and parks that need quiet operation. Gasoline ATVs grow at 3.60% and still account for most units through 2035, because range, refueling speed and price favor engines in remote work.

Military and public safety buyers grow fastest by application at 5.10%

Military and public safety users grow at 5.10% as defense forces, border agencies and search-and-rescue teams buy light patrol vehicles. Forestry and commercial work grows at 4.60%, agriculture and ranching at 4.20%, and recreation and trail riding at 4.00%. Agriculture remains the anchor use in Australia, New Zealand and rural North America, where the ATV is a daily tool.

4WD and AWD models dominate and grow at 4.50%

4WD and AWD ATVs grow at 4.50% and take nearly all utility demand. 2WD models grow at only 1.90%, limited to entry-level, youth and some sport machines, and many makers have dropped them from mid-range lines.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Electric quads move from concept to dealer floor

Battery power is the newest theme in the all-terrain vehicle industry. In August 2025 BRP revealed the Can-Am Outlander Electric, its first electric ATV, with 47 hp, up to 50 miles of range and a Rotax E-Power drivetrain. BRP also introduced the Outlander MAX 6x6 and Smart-Shox semi-active suspension. Dealers told us early electric demand comes from hunters, vineyards and estates that value low noise, and that range anxiety matters less on private land than on trail systems.

Chinese makers scale exports while US brands cut China content

CFMOTO's 2025 revenue rose 31.3% to CNY 19.746 billion, with overseas sales at 69.8% of the total and 197,000 ATVs sold. The company already runs a plant in Nuevo León, Mexico, with 100,000 units of annual capacity. At the same time, Polaris cut China's share of its material costs to about 14% from 18%, according to trade coverage of its January 2026 results, as tariffs raised the cost of Chinese parts.

Japanese brands build in the US and refresh core models

Honda confirmed in May 2025 that its 2026 FourTrax Rancher, Foreman 4x4 and Foreman Rubicon are designed in Ohio and built in North Carolina. Yamaha's 2026 lineup, released in September 2025, includes 70th-anniversary editions, and every full-size Yamaha ATV is built in Newnan, Georgia. Kawasaki added the Brute Force 450 EPS in January 2026. Local assembly shields these brands from part of the tariff cost that hits imports.

The industry is consolidating around fewer, larger players

Textron halted all Arctic Cat production in December 2024 and sold the brand in April 2025 to an investor group led by ARGO chief executive Brad Darling. Polaris reported its sixth straight quarter of share gains in October 2026 with Q3 sales of $2,042.6 million, up 11%. Smaller brands without US plants or strong dealer networks are finding it harder to compete on price and service.

Restraints and Challenges

Side-by-sides keep taking unit share from quads

Polaris's FY2025 annual report estimates North American side-by-side retail at about 525,000 units in 2025 against about 255,000 for ATVs. The ATV share of North American off-road units has fallen to roughly one third, and Australia's ACCC also notes that new quad bike purchases are falling while side-by-side purchases rise.

Safety rules and injury data weigh on youth and farm demand

A CPSC commissioner reported 990 off-highway vehicle deaths in 2020 and more than 100,000 emergency-room injuries a year from 2018 to 2022. In December 2025 the CPSC announced a recall of about 2,290 Luyuan youth ATVs sold on Walmart.com, Amazon and Temu for violating the mandatory ATV standard. In Australia, the Quad Bikes Safety Standard took full effect in October 2021, and the ACCC's May 2026 submission says collisions have overtaken rollovers as the leading cause of deaths.

Tariffs squeeze margins and dealer pricing

Tariffs cut Polaris's Q4 2025 gross margin by about $37 million, and BRP guided for a 50% to 60% fall in Q3 FY2027 earnings per share, mainly because of tariffs. Makers pass part of the cost to buyers, which pushes entry-level ATV prices higher and slows first-time purchases.

Emission certification raises engineering costs

The California Air Resources Board requires off-highway recreational vehicles, including ATVs, to be certified for emissions before sale in California, and US EPA rules apply nationally. Meeting evaporative and exhaust limits on small engines adds cost, especially for low-volume sport models.

Growth Drivers

Farms, ranches and rural workers depend on the utility ATV

Work use is the steadiest source of all-terrain vehicle demand. Utility ATVs are the daily work vehicle on livestock farms, vineyards and rural properties in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. They cost less than a side-by-side, fit narrow gates and tow sprayers, feeders and trailers. Polaris launched its 2026 Sportsman range in July 2025 from $6,999, and Honda's 2026 Foreman 4x4 sells at $8,199. Polaris's FY2025 annual report puts worldwide off-road vehicle retail at about 970,000 units in 2025, up from 945,000, which shows that work-led demand held up even in a weak consumer year. We estimate that utility and agricultural demand adds about +1.2% to the market's yearly growth through 2035.

Chinese exports widen access in emerging and price-sensitive markets

CFMOTO sold 197,000 ATVs in 2025 and grew ATV revenue 33.3% to CNY 9.608 billion. Value-priced models from CFMOTO, Segway Powersports, Hisun and Linhai reach buyers in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia who could not afford Japanese or North American brands. Dealers in these regions told us Chinese ATVs now offer power steering and fuel injection at prices close to older carbureted models. Our model gives export-led volume growth roughly 1.1 percentage points of the 4.15% CAGR, and it is the main reason APAC and Latin America outgrow North America.

Bigger engines, power steering and electric drive raise revenue per unit

Even with flat units in North America, revenue rises because buyers choose larger engines, electronic power steering and premium trims. BRP added Smart-Shox semi-active suspension to Outlander XT-P and MAX Limited packages in August 2025, and the Outlander Electric opened a new price tier. BRP's Year-Round Products revenue rose 33.3% to $1,485.1 million in Q2 FY2027, driven mainly by off-road volume and mix. We credit trade-up and electrification with about +0.9% of yearly value growth, with the above-700cc class growing at 4.90% and electric ATVs at 14.80%.

Opportunities

Electric ATVs for parks, estates and defense users

Quiet electric quads suit national parks, estates, resorts and military reconnaissance, where noise and emissions matter more than range. With electric ATVs growing at 14.80% a year, early movers can build service networks and battery partnerships before the segment scales.

Dealer and fleet programs in Latin America and Africa

Mining camps, plantations and utilities in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, South Africa and Kenya buy ATVs for inspection and staff transport. Fleet contracts with service and parts packages can give makers steady demand in regions where retail financing is limited.

North America still holds well over half of ATV revenue, while Asia Pacific grows fastest on Chinese production and new buyers

North America

North America held a 57.40% share of the global market in 2025. North America's revenue was USD 2.22 Billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach USD 3.13 Billion by 2035, a 3.50% CAGR. North America recorded about 255,000 ATV retail units in 2025 and about 780,000 total off-road vehicle units, according to Polaris. Honda builds its ATVs in North Carolina and Yamaha in Georgia, which keeps much of North America's supply local despite tariffs.

Europe

Europe accounted for an 18.00% share in 2025. Europe's revenue was USD 694.8 Million in 2025 and is expected to reach USD 1.02 Billion by 2035, a 3.90% CAGR. Demand in Europe comes from farms in France, the UK, Ireland and the Nordics and from road-registered quads used in Central Europe. Chinese and Taiwanese brands such as CFMOTO, Linhai, TGB and Kymco hold a larger share of Europe than of the US.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) represented a 15.60% share in 2025. APAC revenue was USD 602.2 Million in 2025 and is forecast to reach USD 1.09 Billion by 2035, the fastest regional CAGR at 6.10%. Australia and New Zealand are the largest farm markets in APAC, with Australia's Quad Bikes Safety Standard in full effect since October 2021, while China hosts CFMOTO, which sold 197,000 ATVs in 2025. Rising leisure demand in China, Japan and Southeast Asia adds new buyers in APAC.

Latin America

Latin America held a 4.60% share in 2025. Latin America's revenue was USD 177.6 Million in 2025 and is forecast at USD 294.8 Million by 2035, a 5.20% CAGR. Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile drive demand in Latin America from farms, mining sites and beach tourism, and CFMOTO's plant in Nuevo León, Mexico, with 100,000 units of yearly capacity gives Latin America a regional supply base.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for a 2.50% share in 2025. Middle East revenue was USD 96.5 Million in 2025 and is projected at USD 154.2 Million by 2035, a 4.80% CAGR. Desert tourism in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Jordan, plus security and border patrol fleets, support Middle East demand for sport and utility quads above 500cc.

Africa

Africa held a 1.90% share in 2025. Africa's revenue was USD 73.3 Million in 2025 and is forecast at USD 115.0 Million by 2035, a 4.60% CAGR. South Africa is the largest market in Africa, with game farms, mines and agriculture using utility quads, while Kenya, Namibia and Morocco add tourism and plantation demand, often for value-priced 400cc to 700cc models.

Polaris and the Japanese big four still lead ATV sales, but CFMOTO has become a global volume leader

The all-terrain vehicle market is concentrated among a handful of established brands in North America and more fragmented in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Scale in engines, dealer coverage and US assembly decide who can absorb tariffs, while Chinese makers win on price and fast product cycles.

North American leaders: Polaris and BRP

Polaris sells the Sportsman range, marked its 40th year of ATVs with the 2026 lineup, and leads North American off-road vehicle share. It reported 2025 sales of $7,152.0 million and said it gained share for six straight quarters through Q3 2026. BRP, through Can-Am, sells the Outlander and Renegade families and pushes technology with Smart-Shox suspension, the Outlander MAX 6x6 and the Outlander Electric.

Japanese manufacturers with US plants

Honda builds the FourTrax Rancher, Foreman and Rubicon in North Carolina and is known for durable utility machines with automatic DCT options. Yamaha builds the Grizzly, Kodiak and Raptor in Newnan, Georgia. Kawasaki sells the Brute Force utility line and KFX youth models, and Suzuki serves farm buyers with the KingQuad range.

Chinese and Taiwanese volume players

CFMOTO sold 197,000 ATVs in 2025 under its CFORCE line and has a Mexican plant with 100,000 units of capacity. Segway Powersports sells the Snarler range, while Hisun Motors and Linhai offer low-cost utility models that are strong in Europe and Latin America. TGB and Kymco of Taiwan sell road-registered and utility quads in Europe.

Challengers and restructured brands

Arctic Cat, now owned by an investor group led by ARGO's chief executive after its April 2025 sale by Textron, is rebuilding its Alterra line and dealer base. Massimo Group sells value ATVs and UTVs in the US, and Volcon targets electric off-road buyers. We expect further consolidation, more US and Mexican assembly, and more electric launches from the large makers before 2030.
