Recreational Vehicles Shift Toward Motorhomes and Camper Vans as North American Towable Demand Cools

Radial Insights sizes the global recreational vehicles market at USD 34.75 Billion in 2025, with value reaching USD 36.35 Billion in 2026 and USD 54.48 Billion by 2035 at a CAGR of 4.60%. US wholesale shipments rose 2.5% to 342,220 units in 2025, but shipments through September 2026 were down 13.7%, led by weaker towable demand.

This study covers new recreational vehicles sold at manufacturer level: towable units such as travel trailers, caravans, fifth wheel trailers, folding camping trailers and truck campers, motorized units including Class A, Class B (camper vans) and Class C and semi-integrated motorhomes, plus park model RVs. Used RV sales, dealer service and parts revenue, campground fees, RV rental income, aftermarket accessories and manufactured housing are excluded.

Electric and hybrid motorhome powertrains are the fastest-growing segment at an 18.50% CAGR from a very small base, and Class B motorhomes and camper vans lead product types at 6.40%. Motorized RVs as a group grow at 5.30%, faster than towables at 4.10%, a pattern already visible in Thor Industries' fiscal 2026 results, where North American motorized sales rose 12.8% while towable sales fell 16.1%.

North America holds the largest share at 52.00% in 2025. Asia Pacific (APAC) grows fastest at a 7.40% CAGR, helped by Australia's large caravan base of about 937,000 registered RVs and a young but rising camper market in China, Japan and South Korea. Europe, where about 215,000 new caravans and motorhomes were registered in 2025, remains the second-largest region.

Consolidation is reshaping the supply chain. Patrick Industries and LCI Industries agreed an all-stock merger in June 2026 that creates a component group with pro forma revenue of about USD 8.1 Billion, and Winnebago announced plant consolidation in August 2026, both responses to a softer recreational vehicles cycle.

Motorized RVs Grow at 5.30% Against 4.10% for Towables

Towable RVs remain the volume base, with 306,191 US wholesale units in 2025, but demand is more sensitive to interest rates and entry-level buyer confidence. RVIA data show towable shipments down 15.6% through September 2026, while motorhome shipments rose 2.0% to 28,151 units. Thor's North American motorized sales rose 12.8% in fiscal 2026, while its North American towable sales fell 16.1%. In Europe, motorhome registrations rose 0.6% to about 161,000 in 2025 while caravan registrations fell about 11%. This gap supports a higher motorized growth rate.

Class B Camper Vans Lead Product Types at 6.40%

Camper vans built on Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster, Fiat Ducato and Volkswagen platforms are the fastest product type at 6.40%. Class C and semi-integrated motorhomes, the core of the European market, grow at 5.10%. Park model RVs grow at 5.60%, with 3,804 US units shipped through September 2026, about 19% higher. Travel trailers, caravans and folding campers grow at 3.80%, the same pace as Class A motorhomes, while fifth wheel trailers trail at 3.70%.

Electric and Hybrid Powertrains Expand at 18.50% From a Small Base

Diesel remains the main powertrain for European motorhomes and large Class A coaches and grows at 4.60%, while gasoline, common in US Class A and Class C units, grows at 4.40%. Electric and hybrid motorhomes grow at 18.50% as van chassis makers add battery-electric versions and RV builders test range-extended designs. Range and charging along remote routes still limit adoption, so most electric units through 2030 will be compact camper vans.

Rental Fleets Grow Faster Than Private Ownership

Rental fleets grow at 6.80%, against 4.30% for private owners, as peer-to-peer platforms and fleet operators in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand buy motorhomes in bulk. Rental exposure brings new buyers into the category and shortens replacement cycles, because fleets typically sell units after two to four seasons.

Direct and Online Sales Grow at 7.10%

Dealerships remain the dominant channel and grow at 4.40%. Camping World, the largest US RV retailer, sold 74,458 new units in 2025, up 5.6%, through 196 stores. Direct-to-consumer and online sales grow at 7.10% as smaller van builders sell through websites and showrooms.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

US Shipments Rose in 2025, Then Fell Sharply in 2026

RVIA reported 342,220 US wholesale shipments in 2025, up 2.5%, and forecast a 2026 median of 349,300 units in December 2025. Actual 2026 shipments have run well below that forecast: September 2026 shipments fell 9.2% to 23,320 units, and year-to-date shipments were down 13.7% at 230,511 units. Towables drove the decline, while motorhome shipments stayed slightly positive. Winnebago had guided to 315,000-345,000 North American wholesale shipments for calendar 2026 in October 2025.

Europe Held Steady as Motorhomes Replaced Caravans

European new registrations reached just over 215,000 units in 2025, down 2.6% from more than 221,000 in 2024, according to European Caravan Federation figures published by CIVD in January 2026. Motorhomes rose about 0.6% to roughly 161,000 units, while caravans fell about 11% to 54,200. Germany registered 94,134 units, France 33,504 and the UK just under 26,000. Sweden's motorhome registrations jumped 46.6% to 4,201 units, and Italy rose more than 10% to 7,709 motorhomes.

Manufacturers and Suppliers Consolidated Capacity

REV Group sold its Lance Camper towable business to Vision Kore in June 2025 to focus on motorized RVs. Winnebago announced in August 2026 that it would close its Winnebago Towables campus in Middlebury, Indiana and its Lake Mills, Iowa motorhome plant, moving production to existing sites. Thor recorded USD 25.2 Million of European restructuring costs in fiscal 2026, and Knaus Tabbert realigned production to demand in 2025. On the supplier side, Patrick Industries and LCI Industries agreed to merge in June 2026.

Used RV Sales Surged at Retail

Camping World's used RV unit sales rose 24.6% to 63,574 in 2025, far faster than new unit growth of 5.6%. Strong used demand shows that interest in RV travel remains high, even as price-sensitive buyers trade down from new units.

Restraints and Challenges

High Interest Rates and Affordability Weigh on Towable Demand

Most RVs are bought with financing, and higher interest rates since 2022 raised monthly payments for entry-level buyers. RVIA data show US towable shipments down 15.6% through September 2026, and the RVIA September 2026 shipment report tracks total shipments 13.7% below the prior year. Thor's North American towable sales fell 16.1% in fiscal 2026.

Tariffs Raise Chassis and Component Costs

A Section 232 proclamation in October 2025 placed a 25% tariff on medium and heavy-duty trucks and parts, including chassis, from November 2025. RV makers depend on imported appliances, aluminum, electronics and van chassis, so trade measures raise costs and squeeze margins at a time when dealers resist price increases.

Safety, Recall and Compliance Costs

Motorized RVs in the US must meet federal motor vehicle safety standards, and builders file defect recalls with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Complex supply chains with hundreds of component suppliers make quality control costly, and recalls can damage brand reputation with first-time buyers.

Campground Capacity and Dealer Inventory Cycles

Popular parks in North America, Europe and Australia face crowding at peak periods, and booking difficulty can discourage new owners. Dealer inventory swings also amplify shipment cycles: when dealers destock, wholesale shipments fall faster than retail sales, as seen in the 2026 US decline.

Growth Drivers

Lasting Demand for Outdoor and Flexible Travel

RV travel gained a large new customer base during 2020-2022, and the 2025 data show that interest has held up. US wholesale shipments rose 2.5% to 342,220 units in 2025, Camping World's revenue grew 4.4% to USD 6.4 Billion, and its used RV unit sales jumped 24.6%. In Europe, registrations stayed above 215,000 units for a second year, and Germany alone registered 94,134 caravans and motorhomes. Australia counted about 937,000 registered RVs in 2025, up 4%, according to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia. Remote work, multi-generational travel and the cost of hotels all support RV holidays. Buyers in their 30s and 40s are a growing share of first-time owners. We estimate that sustained outdoor travel demand contributes about +1.5% to the recreational vehicles market's annual growth.

Premiumization and Motorhome Mix Lift Average Selling Prices

Motorhomes sell for several times the price of a typical travel trailer, so the shift toward motorized units lifts market value faster than unit counts. Thor's North American motorized sales rose 12.8% to USD 2.46 Billion in fiscal 2026, and its European segment, which includes Erwin Hymer Group, grew 9.0% to USD 3.30 Billion. Winnebago, which owns Grand Design, Newmar and Barletta, guided fiscal 2026 revenue of USD 2.75 to 2.95 Billion after posting USD 2,798.2 Million in fiscal 2025. Lithium battery systems, solar panels, connected controls and premium interiors raise content per unit. This richer mix adds roughly +1.2 percentage points to yearly value growth.

Rental and Sharing Platforms Bring in New Users

Peer-to-peer rental marketplaces and fleet operators let travelers try RVs without buying one. Rental fleets in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand renew motorhomes every few seasons, creating steady orders for manufacturers such as Thor, Trigano, Knaus Tabbert and Hymer. Trigano, Europe's largest leisure vehicle maker, reported fiscal 2025-26 revenue of about EUR 3.8 Billion, up 3.8%. Rental is also how many younger buyers first experience RV travel, which feeds later purchases. Rental fleets grow at 6.80%, and we estimate the rental and sharing model adds close to +0.6% to the market's yearly expansion.

Opportunities

Electric and Range-Extended Camper Vans

Electric and hybrid powertrains grow at 18.50% a year. As van chassis suppliers expand electric ranges and charging networks spread along European and North American highways, builders that design light, efficient camper vans can capture early adopters and urban buyers.

Asia Pacific Market Development

APAC grows at 7.40%, the fastest regional rate. Australia already builds about 24,000 RVs a year, and campground development in China, Japan and South Korea opens room for compact motorhomes and camper vans adapted to local roads and parking.

North America Holds Over Half of Recreational Vehicles Value While Asia Pacific Grows Fastest

North America

North America accounts for a 52.00% share of the recreational vehicles market in 2025, worth USD 18.07 Billion. The North American market grows at a 4.15% CAGR to USD 27.14 Billion by 2035. RVIA counted 342,220 US wholesale shipments in 2025, and Elkhart County, Indiana remains the world's main RV production hub for Thor, Forest River and Winnebago's Grand Design. US shipments through September 2026 fell 13.7% to 230,511 units, and Canada adds North American demand through its own dealer network and cross-border sales.

Europe

Europe holds a 36.50% share in 2025, worth USD 12.68 Billion, and is forecast to reach USD 19.51 Billion by 2035 at a 4.40% CAGR. European registrations totaled just over 215,000 units in 2025, with about 161,000 motorhomes. Germany registered 94,134 units and France 33,504, while makers such as Hymer, Knaus Tabbert and Trigano dominate supply. Knaus Tabbert reported 2025 revenue of EUR 1,002.1 Million.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds an 8.00% share in 2025, worth USD 2.78 Billion, and is the fastest-growing region at a 7.40% CAGR, reaching USD 5.68 Billion by 2035. Australia built 23,963 RVs locally in 2025 and imported 23,244 caravan trailers, up 16%, according to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia. About 937,000 RVs are registered in Australia, and campground investment in China and Japan adds new APAC demand.

Latin America

Latin America represents a 1.50% share in 2025, or USD 0.52 Billion, and grows at a 5.60% CAGR to USD 0.90 Billion by 2035. Brazil, Argentina and Chile have small domestic motorhome and trailer builders, and imported camper vans serve tourism in Patagonia and coastal routes. Import duties keep Latin American prices high.

Middle East

The Middle East holds a 1.20% share in 2025, worth USD 0.42 Billion, and reaches USD 0.75 Billion by 2035 at a 6.00% CAGR. Desert camping culture in Saudi Arabia and the UAE supports demand for off-road caravans and luxury motorhomes, and Saudi tourism investment is adding new camping destinations in the Middle East.

Africa

Africa accounts for a 0.80% share in 2025, worth USD 0.28 Billion, and grows at a 6.30% CAGR to USD 0.51 Billion by 2035. South Africa has a long caravan and off-road trailer tradition and local builders, and overland tourism in Namibia, Botswana and Kenya supports rental fleets of 4x4 campers across Africa.

Primary Interview Insights

RV Dealers, US Midwest

Why are towable shipments falling in 2026?

Dealers told us they are keeping lean inventory because floorplan interest costs are high. Retail traffic is steady, but buyers are choosing used units or smaller trailers.

European Motorhome Builders

What is driving motorhome demand over caravans?

Builders said buyers want flexibility to move daily without towing, and semi-integrated models on Fiat Ducato and Ford Transit chassis are the best sellers. Caravan demand is concentrated among older, repeat buyers.

Rental Fleet Operators

How are rental fleets changing purchase patterns?

Operators said they buy compact motorhomes in bulk and sell them after two to four seasons. Many renters later buy their own units, often from the same brands.

Component Suppliers

How are tariffs affecting costs?

Suppliers of appliances and electronics said tariff costs raised input prices in 2025-2026. They are shifting some sourcing to North American plants and passing part of the increase to OEMs.

Camper Van Upfitters

How strong is interest in electric camper vans?

Upfitters said inquiries are rising, especially from urban buyers, but range limits keep most orders on diesel and gasoline chassis. They expect electric demand to grow as van ranges improve.
