Wheeled Skid Steers Are Losing Unit Share to Track Loaders but Gaining Value Through Bigger, Vertical-Lift Machines
Global sales of new wheeled skid steer loaders reached USD 2.85 Billion in 2025, and Radial Insights expects USD 2.95 Billion in 2026 and USD 3.98 Billion by 2035, a 3.40% CAGR. The United States still buys close to half of all machines, but buyers there now pick compact track loaders far more often.
We define the skid steer loaders market as the value of new wheeled skid steer loaders sold worldwide at manufacturer selling price, covering radial-lift and vertical-lift machines, diesel and battery-electric units, and rated operating capacities from under 1,750 lb to above 3,000 lb. Compact track loaders, stand-on mini track loaders, used machines, attachments sold separately and aftermarket parts are excluded, although we track compact track loader sales because they compete for the same buyers.
The skid steer loaders market is concentrated in North America. Equipment Data Associates counted 9,465 new financed skid steers sold in the US in the twelve months to April 2026, down 9.6%, while new financed compact track loaders rose 1.2% to 56,157 units in the same period. Skid steers made up only 14.5% of the combined new compact loader volume, yet the wheeled machine keeps a loyal base on paved sites, farms, recycling yards and warehouses where tires wear less than tracks and travel speed matters.
Electric skid steers are the fastest-growing segment at an 18.40% CAGR, from a very small base, and Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at 4.60% a year. Machines above 3,000 lb of rated operating capacity grow at 4.20%, helped by the large-frame vertical-lift launches from Manitou, Gehl and Bobcat between 2025 and 2026.
Our forecast assumes flat to slightly rising unit volumes in the US and Europe, higher average selling prices as the mix shifts to larger machines, and steady volume gains in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East where contractors are adopting compact equipment for the first time.

Machines Above 3,000 lb Rated Capacity Grow at 4.20%, Almost Twice the Rate of the Smallest Class
Large-frame skid steers grow at 4.20% a year because contractors use them to load highway trucks and run high-flow attachments such as cold planers, mulchers and trenchers. Manitou's 3600 V, launched in September 2025, carries 3,600 lb at 114 hp, and Bobcat's Pro-tier S86-2 offers 115 hp and a 12 ft lift height. The 2,201 to 3,000 lb class, home to best-sellers such as the Kubota SSV75, grows at 3.55%. Machines below 1,750 lb grow at only 2.40% because stand-on mini track loaders and compact wheel loaders now win many small landscaping jobs.
Vertical-Lift Designs Grow at 3.85% Against 2.70% for Radial Lift
Vertical-lift arms keep the bucket closer to the machine at full height, which gives more reach over truck sides and more capacity at the top of the lift. Every large-frame launch from Manitou and Gehl in 2025 used vertical-lift arms, and JCB's 290 launched in September 2026 rates 3,029 lb. Radial-lift machines remain popular for digging, grading and pushing material at ground level, but they grow more slowly at 2.70%.
Electric Skid Steers Grow at 18.40% From a Small Base
Battery-electric machines grow at 18.40% a year because they suit indoor, food-processing, livestock and urban night work where exhaust and noise are banned or unwelcome. California's off-road fleet rules, which barred adding Tier 3 engines from January 2024 and require large fleets to retire Tier 1 engines by January 2026, push public and rental fleets in the state toward cleaner machines. Diesel models grow at 3.05% and still account for the great majority of units in 2035.
Industrial and Material Handling Leads End Use at 3.75%
Industrial users such as recycling yards, foundries, ports and warehouses grow at 3.75% because they prefer wheels on concrete and run machines many hours a year. Landscaping and grounds care grows at 3.60%, supported by attachment variety. Construction grows at 3.30% as general contractors shift part of their purchases to track loaders, and agriculture and livestock grows at 3.20%, steady demand from dairy and feedlot operators who value a machine that cleans barns and moves feed.
Rental Companies Grow at 4.10% While Dealer Sales to End Users Grow at 2.95%
Rental fleets buy a rising share of new compact loaders because contractors prefer to rent machines for short jobs rather than own them. Doosan Bobcat said rental-company demand helped its compact equipment sales recover in 2026. Sales to owner-operators and farms grow at 2.95%, held back by higher machine prices and tariffs on imported steel.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Manufacturers Split Ranges Into Value and Premium Tiers
In March 2026 at ConExpo, Bobcat revealed a new lineup of skid steers and compact track loaders split into a Classic tier, replacing the M-Series, and a Pro tier, replacing the R-Series, with dealer arrival planned for summer 2026. Classic skid steers range from the S70 to the S770, while Pro machines run from the S64-2 to the 115 hp S86-2. The move lets dealers sell simpler machines to price-sensitive buyers and feature-rich machines to rental and contractor fleets.
Large-Frame Vertical-Lift Machines Return to the Market
In September 2025, Manitou launched five large-frame loaders, including the 3250 V, 3350 V and 3600 V skid steers with 72 to 114 hp and up to 3,800 lb of capacity with counterweights. Its sister brand Gehl launched the matching V325, V335 and V360 skid steers in 2025, built in Madison, South Dakota. These launches show that the skid steer loaders market still rewards bigger machines even as unit volumes fall.
New Models Aimed at Attachment Work and Material Handling
In September 2026, JCB launched its 250 and 290 skid steers, built in Savannah, Georgia, both rated at 74 hp. The 250 offers 2,531 lb of rated operating capacity and the 290 offers 3,029 lb with a JCB 4.4 litre engine. JCB pitches both for pallet forks, grapples and other material handling attachments, an area where wheeled machines hold their advantage over tracks.
Global Brands Bring New Skid Steers to Europe
In April 2025 at bauma, Komatsu showed a new 4 tonne skid steer loader and a 5 tonne compact track loader with a 53.7 kW Stage V engine and diesel particulate filter, each rated above 1.6 tonnes. European buyers have long relied on Bobcat, JCB and Wacker Neuson for skid steers, and new entrants raise competition on cab comfort and emissions compliance.
Restraints and Challenges
Compact Track Loaders Keep Taking Share From Wheeled Machines
US new financed compact track loader sales reached 56,157 units in the year to April 2026, roughly six times the 9,465 skid steers sold in the same period. Track loaders float better on soft ground and work through wet seasons, so many contractors and landscapers now buy them first. This substitution caps the skid steer loaders market in North America, its largest region.
Tariffs Raise Machine and Parts Costs
In August 2025, the US Commerce Department added 407 product categories to the 50% Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum derivatives, including heavy equipment such as front-end loaders. In June 2026 a proclamation cut duties on construction equipment from qualifying trade-deal countries to 15% through the end of 2027, but higher input costs have already lifted list prices and slowed purchases by smaller contractors.
Emissions Rules Add Cost to Small Diesel Engines
Machines sold in the US must meet EPA nonroad diesel engine rules, while California's amended In-Use Off-Road Diesel-Fueled Fleets regulation requires renewable diesel from January 2024 and forces large fleets to retire Tier 2 engines by January 2028. Engines in the 50 to 75 hp band carry heavy aftertreatment costs relative to machine price.
Softer Used Values and an Aging Fleet
The average US used skid steer price was USD 39,599 in the fourth quarter of 2025 against USD 40,461 a year earlier, and average age rose from 6.9 to 7.3 years. Lower trade-in values make it harder for owners to finance a new machine, which lengthens replacement cycles.
Growth Drivers
Rental Fleet Expansion and Fleet Renewal in North America
Rental companies are the largest single buyer group for compact loaders, and their purchases set the pace of the skid steer loaders market. Doosan Bobcat, the category leader, reported 2025 revenue of USD 6.18 billion with compact equipment sales down 2%, then reported first-quarter 2026 revenue up 6.2% to USD 1.53 billion and second-quarter revenue up 4.1% to USD 1.63 billion, citing recovering demand and rental fleet orders. The company guided to USD 6.45 billion in 2026 revenue. Because the average US skid steer in service is now 7.3 years old, rental and contractor fleets face a growing replacement backlog. We estimate North American fleet renewal and rental purchasing add about +1.2% of annual growth to the global forecast.
The Shift to Larger, Higher-Value Machines
Average selling prices rise as buyers move up the size range. Manitou's 3600 V and Gehl's V360 deliver 3,600 lb of rated capacity at 114 hp, and Bobcat's S86-2 offers 115 hp and 12 ft of lift height. These machines carry far higher prices than the 1,500 to 2,000 lb models that once dominated volumes, and they compete directly with small wheel loaders on loading work. Bobcat's new plant in Monterrey, Mexico, a USD 300 million investment of about 700,000 square feet, was planned to add 20% to its North American loader capacity from early 2026. We estimate the move to large-frame, high-flow machines contributes roughly 0.9 percentage points of yearly value growth even with flat unit volumes.
First-Time Adoption in Emerging Markets
Contractors in India, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East are starting to replace manual labor and tractor-mounted loaders with skid steers for small sites, municipal cleaning and material handling. JCB, Bobcat, CASE, LiuGong and SANY all sell compact loaders in these regions, often through dealer financing. Doosan Bobcat said its Asia, Latin America and Oceania sales fell 13% in 2025, showing that the base is still volatile, but labor costs and urban construction keep rising. We expect emerging-market adoption to lift global growth by close to +0.6% a year, which is why Asia Pacific (APAC) grows at 4.60% against 3.40% worldwide.
Opportunities
Electric Skid Steers for Indoor and Urban Work
Food plants, livestock barns, greenhouses and city centers need quiet machines with no exhaust. The electric segment grows at 18.40% a year, and suppliers that offer swappable batteries and rental-friendly charging can win early fleet accounts.
Telematics and Attachment Packages for Rental Fleets
Rental companies want remote hour tracking, theft protection and quick-change attachments. Manufacturers that bundle telematics, attachment kits and service plans can raise revenue per machine and win repeat orders.
