Trucks, Off-Highway Machines and Tighter Particle Rules Keep Diesel Particulate Filter Demand Growing Despite Falling Diesel Car Sales

Global spending on diesel particulate filters stood at USD 13.85 Billion in 2025; Radial Insights projects USD 14.24 Billion in 2026 and USD 18.34 Billion by 2035, a 2.85% CAGR. Commercial vehicles, rather than passenger cars, now set the direction of the market.

Our scope includes wall-flow filter substrates made of cordierite, silicon carbide, aluminum titanate and sintered metal, the washcoats and catalysts applied to them, the canned filter assemblies supplied to vehicle and engine makers, and replacement filters sold through the aftermarket. We cover passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, medium and heavy trucks and buses, and off-highway engines in construction, agriculture and mining. Gasoline particulate filters, stationary generator filters and standalone cleaning services are excluded, though we discuss gasoline filters where they share substrate capacity.

Diesel's role in cars is shrinking fast. ACEA data show diesel took only 8.9% of EU new car registrations in 2025. Yet diesel still powered 93.2% of new EU trucks, 80.7% of vans and 62.1% of buses in 2025, and every one of those vehicles carries a filter. India's draft BS-VII rules, Euro 7 and the US 2027 heavy-duty rule all keep particle limits tight.

SCR-coated filters lead filter coatings with a 4.60% CAGR as engine makers combine NOx and soot control in one brick to save space. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles grow at 3.95%, the fastest vehicle type. Africa posts the fastest regional CAGR at 3.80%, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds the largest regional share at 41.30% in 2025.

Supplier results show a mature but profitable business. NGK Insulators' environment unit, which makes honeycomb filters and sensors, posted April to December 2025 sales of JPY 294.6 billion and operating income of JPY 54.1 billion. Corning reports its filter business inside an automotive segment that sold USD 1,794 million in 2025.

Silicon Carbide Gains on Heat Tolerance While Aluminum Titanate Slows

Cordierite remains the most widely used material on heavy-duty engines because of its low cost and thermal shock resistance, and it grows at 2.40%. Silicon carbide, favored by Ibiden and others for compact light-duty and high-temperature applications, grows faster at 3.30% as SCR coatings demand higher heat tolerance. Aluminum titanate, used mainly in car filters, slows to 1.90%. Sintered metal and other niche filters for retrofit and off-highway machines grow at 3.70%.

SCR-Coated Filters Combine Two Functions

Uncoated filters grow only 1.80% as most new systems add a catalyst layer. Catalyzed filters, which burn soot at lower temperatures, rise 2.95%. SCR-coated filters lead at 4.60% because engine makers facing the US 0.035 g/bhp-hr NOx limit and Euro 7 want NOx reduction and soot capture in a single close-coupled unit.

Heavy Trucks and Machines Replace Cars as the Growth Engine

Passenger car filters grow just 0.85%, held up by hybrids and markets such as India where diesel SUVs remain popular. Light commercial vehicles grow 2.60%, off-highway equipment 3.60% and medium and heavy commercial vehicles 3.95%, since battery trucks reached only 4.2% of EU truck registrations in 2025.

Aftermarket Outgrows OEM on an Aging Fleet

OEM filter demand rises 2.45%, following new engine builds. The aftermarket grows at 3.85% because the global diesel fleet is aging and filters on high-mileage trucks need cleaning or replacement, and because enforcement against tampered systems continues at the state level.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Particle Counting Moves to 10 Nanometers

Euro 7, Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, applies to new car and van types from 29 November 2026, to all new cars and vans from 29 November 2027, to new truck and bus types from 29 May 2028 and to all heavy vehicles from 29 May 2029. It shifts particle counting from 23 nm to 10 nm. India's October 2026 draft BS-VII notification adopts the same PN10 threshold, with cars from April 2029 and heavy vehicles phased to April 2035.

US Heavy-Duty Rule Stays on Schedule With Lower Cost

In November 2025 the EPA declined to delay the model year 2027 heavy-duty NOx rule to 2031. Its July 2026 proposal keeps the 0.035 g/bhp-hr NOx limit but cuts warranty from 450,000 to 100,000 miles, delays the 650,000-mile useful life to 2030 and replaces DEF derates with alerts. Engine makers still need upgraded aftertreatment, including filters, for 2027 engines.

Catalyst Groups Refocus Their Portfolios

Johnson Matthey completed the GBP 1.325 billion sale of its Catalyst Technologies business to Honeywell in July 2026, leaving its Clean Air emission control unit as a larger part of the group. Tenneco Clean Air India listed in November 2025 after a INR 3,600 crore IPO that was subscribed 58.83 times, showing investor appetite for clean air hardware in India.

Suppliers Adjust to Peak Combustion Volumes

Umicore said in February 2026 that global combustion engine production has peaked, while its Catalysis unit held 2025 revenue flat at EUR 1,668 million. Eberspaecher's 2025 revenue fell 6.6% to EUR 4,979.8 million. Suppliers are shifting capacity toward trucks, off-highway and replacement parts.

Restraints and Challenges

Electrification of Cars and Vans

Diesel's share of EU new car registrations fell to 8.9% in 2025, and diesel vans slipped to 80.7% from 84.4% in 2024. Each lost diesel car removes a filter from OEM demand, and the IEA counted more than 20 million electric cars sold globally in 2025.

Weak Truck Cycle

Cummins' Components segment, which includes aftertreatment, posted Q3 2025 sales of USD 2.3 billion, down 15%, with North America down 24% on weaker truck demand. EU truck registrations fell 6.2% to 307,460 units in 2025. Fewer new trucks mean fewer OEM filters.

Regulatory Softening and Tampering

The EPA's July 2026 proposed amendments allow nonconformance penalties from model year 2027 and let up to 5% of trucks meet older standards. In January 2026 the Department of Justice said it would stop criminal prosecution of emissions tampering, though civil enforcement continues. The EPA has estimated that more than 550,000 diesel trucks had controls removed over a decade, which cuts replacement filter sales.

Cost and Regeneration Problems

Filters clog when vehicles run short, cool duty cycles, forcing active regeneration that burns fuel and causes downtime. Fleet complaints about cost and reliability fuel political pressure to relax rules, and a filter replacement on a heavy truck can cost several thousand dollars.

Growth Drivers

Tighter Particle Number Limits in Europe and India

Euro 7 lowers the particle size counted to 10 nm and extends durability requirements, which pushes automakers toward finer-pore substrates and coated filters with higher filtration efficiency. India's draft BS-VII rules apply the same PN10 threshold and a real-driving conformity factor of 1.0 from April 2030. India is one of the few large markets where diesel SUVs and pickups still sell in volume, so the rules lift both content and price per filter. NGK and Corning, the two largest substrate makers, supply most of these programs. We estimate tighter particle rules add about +0.9% of annual growth to the diesel particulate filter market through 2035.

Diesel Remains the Default for Heavy Freight and Machines

ACEA data show diesel powered 93.2% of new EU trucks and 62.1% of new buses in 2025, while electric trucks reached only 4.2%. The US EPA kept its model year 2027 heavy-duty NOx standard of 0.035 g/bhp-hr, which requires upgraded aftertreatment systems including SCR-coated and catalyzed filters. Cummins, Daimler Truck, Volvo and PACCAR are launching 2027 engines with new aftertreatment packages. Off-highway engines in construction and farm equipment follow similar Stage V and Tier 4 rules. This heavy-duty base contributes roughly 1.1 points to yearly market expansion.

Replacement Demand From an Aging Diesel Fleet

Hundreds of millions of diesel vehicles built since filters became standard are now aging, and filters reach end of life after ash loading, cracking or repeated failed regenerations. Fleet operators in Europe and North America increasingly swap or professionally clean filters instead of risking roadside inspection failures. Tenneco, Bosal, Dinex and Eberspaecher sell replacement filters through parts distributors, while state-level civil enforcement against deletes continues in the US. Aftermarket replacement adds an estimated 0.7 percentage points to the overall growth rate.

Opportunities

SCR-Coated and Multi-Function Filters

Combining SCR catalyst and filter in one brick saves space on 2027 US trucks and Euro 7 vans. Suppliers with coating know-how, such as Umicore, BASF and Johnson Matthey's Clean Air unit, can capture more value per unit.

Localization in India

BS-VII will require PN10 filters on Indian cars from 2029. Tenneco Clean Air India's November 2025 listing and local canning plants give Indian suppliers a chance to build substrate and coating capacity before the rules start.

Asia Pacific (APAC) Leads Diesel Particulate Filter Revenue on Truck and Machinery Output

Regional demand follows diesel truck production, emission rule timing and the size of the aging diesel fleet.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 41.30% of the diesel particulate filter market, worth USD 5.72 Billion in 2025. The Asia Pacific (APAC) market grows to USD 8.11 Billion by 2035 at a 3.55% CAGR. China VI heavy trucks, Japanese substrate production by NGK and Ibiden, and India's draft BS-VII rules from 2029 drive the region.

Europe

Europe accounts for 26.10% of 2025 revenue, about USD 3.61 Billion. Europe reaches USD 4.38 Billion by 2035 at a 1.95% CAGR, the slowest rate, because diesel took only 8.9% of EU car registrations in 2025. Euro 7 PN10 limits and 307,460 new trucks a year keep demand steady.

North America

North America represents 23.70% of the market, valued at USD 3.28 Billion in 2025. North America rises to USD 4.12 Billion by 2035 at a 2.30% CAGR, supported by the EPA model year 2027 heavy-duty rule and diesel pickups, offset by a weak truck cycle that cut Cummins' North American component sales 24% in Q3 2025.

Latin America

Latin America takes 4.60% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 0.64 Billion. Latin America climbs to USD 0.86 Billion by 2035 at a 3.10% CAGR as Brazil's PROCONVE P8 and Mexico's truck rules spread filter fitment.

Middle East

The Middle East holds 2.50% of the market, or USD 0.35 Billion in 2025. The Middle East reaches USD 0.48 Billion by 2035 at a 3.40% CAGR, driven by imported trucks built to Euro VI standards and mining fleets.

Africa

Africa contributes 1.80% of 2025 revenue, about USD 0.25 Billion. Africa grows to USD 0.36 Billion by 2035 at a 3.80% CAGR, the fastest regional rate, as South Africa and Morocco tighten fuel quality and emission standards.

Two Substrate Makers Dominate While Canning and Coating Are Spread Across Many Suppliers

The diesel particulate filter value chain has three layers: ceramic substrate makers, catalyst coaters, and system integrators that can the filter and deliver it to engine makers. Substrate supply is concentrated, coating is shifting through acquisitions, and the aftermarket is fragmented.

Substrate Leaders

NGK Insulators and Corning supply most of the world's cordierite and silicon carbide wall-flow substrates. NGK's environment business posted April to December 2025 sales of JPY 294.6 billion. Corning, which reports filters within an automotive segment that sold USD 1,794 million in 2025, is the main cordierite supplier to North American heavy-duty engines. Ibiden is known for silicon carbide filters used in European and Japanese light-duty diesels.

Catalyst Coaters

Umicore, with EUR 1,668 million of Catalysis revenue in 2025, BASF's environmental catalyst business and Johnson Matthey's Clean Air unit apply the washcoats that turn a filter into a catalyzed or SCR-coated unit. Johnson Matthey sold its separate chemical Catalyst Technologies arm to Honeywell in July 2026 and is concentrating on heavy-duty emission catalysts.

System Integrators

Tenneco, Forvia, Eberspaecher and Bosal can filters into complete aftertreatment systems for automakers. Forvia's Clean Mobility unit posted 2025 sales of EUR 4,010 million. Cummins builds its own aftertreatment for its engines through its Components segment, which recorded USD 2.3 billion of Q3 2025 sales.

Aftermarket and Retrofit Specialists

Dinex, HJS Emission Technology and Donaldson serve replacement and retrofit demand for trucks, buses and off-highway machines, with Donaldson strong in filtration for construction and mining equipment. LiqTech makes silicon carbide filters for retrofit and marine uses.

Primary Interview Insights

Regulation

How did the July 2026 EPA proposal change your 2027 plans?

A North American engine maker told us the hardware plan is unchanged because the NOx limit stayed at 0.035 g/bhp-hr. The shorter warranty lowers expected claim costs but not filter content.

Technology

Why are SCR-coated filters gaining share in new designs?

An aftertreatment engineer said packaging space on vans and trucks is the main reason. Putting SCR on the filter lets them move NOx control closer to the engine where exhaust is hotter.

Aftermarket

What is driving replacement filter demand?

A European parts distributor said older Euro VI trucks are reaching the age where ash cleaning no longer restores performance. Fleets now replace filters during scheduled maintenance rather than waiting for failures.

Materials

Will silicon carbide or cordierite win under PN10 rules?

A substrate supplier said both will meet PN10 with finer pore structures. Silicon carbide wins where heat loads are high, while cordierite keeps its cost lead on large heavy-duty filters.

India

How are Indian suppliers preparing for BS-VII?

An Indian Tier 1 told us customers have asked for PN10 test data on current filters already. He expects localized coating and canning to expand before 2029 to avoid import costs.
