A Weak 2025 Gives Way to a Product Renewal Cycle Led by Bigger, Smarter and First Electric Articulated Haulers

After a soft year in which global unit sales fell to just over 9,000, the articulated dump trucks market was worth USD 4.95 Billion in 2025. Radial Insights projects USD 5.14 Billion in 2026 and USD 7.22 Billion by 2035, a 3.85% CAGR, as every major brand renews its range.

We define the articulated dump trucks market as the value of new articulated haulers sold worldwide at manufacturer selling price. It covers 4x4 and 6x6 machines, diesel and battery-electric models, and payloads from below 30 tonnes to about 55 tonnes. Rigid off-highway haul trucks, on-road tipper trucks, used machines, rebuilds, tires and aftermarket parts sold separately are excluded.

Articulated haulers move dirt, rock and aggregate over soft, steep or wet ground where rigid trucks and road tippers cannot work. Rokbak estimated that the global market would close above 9,000 units in 2025, down from 10,300 in 2024, as North America weakened while the United Kingdom, Africa and Italy grew. North America is the largest single market, with Hitachi estimating annual demand at 5,000 to 6,000 units.

Electric articulated haulers are the fastest-growing segment at a 21.30% CAGR, starting from Volvo CE's A30 Electric and A40 Electric rental programs in Europe in 2026. Trucks above 40 tonnes of payload grow at 4.35% as new models such as Volvo's next-generation A60 and Komatsu's HM460-6 push capacity higher. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at 5.20% a year from a small base.

Our forecast assumes a cyclical recovery in North American construction from 2026, steady quarry and mining demand, and slowly rising adoption in Asia, Africa and the Middle East where contractors are moving from tipper trucks to articulated haulers on large earthmoving jobs.

Larger 6x6 Haulers and Electric Models Outgrow Smaller Trucks as Quarries and Mines Seek Lower Cost per Tonne

Segment growth in the articulated dump trucks market follows a simple calculation by buyers: cost per tonne moved. Bigger trucks, better transmissions and electric drive all lower that cost, and they grow faster than the smaller trucks that dominate general construction. Radial Insights reports CAGR only for each segment, with no segment values or shares.

Trucks Above 40 Tonnes Grow at 4.35% Against 2.90% for Machines Below 30 Tonnes

The largest haulers grow fastest because quarries and mines want more payload per operator. Volvo CE's next-generation A60 carries about 55 tonnes, Komatsu's HM460-6 raises payload to 46.3 US tons from 44.2 on the model it replaces, and Develon's DA45-7 carries 89,508 lb. The Cat 745 was the best-selling articulated truck in the US with 251 financed units in the year to September 2025. The 30 to 40 tonne class, which includes the Cat 730 and Volvo A30G, grows at 3.70%. Trucks below 30 tonnes grow at 2.90% because smaller sites often use tracked dumpers or road tippers instead.

Electric Haulers Grow at 21.30% From a Very Small Base

Battery-electric articulated haulers grow at 21.30% a year as contractors under zero-emission site rules in Scandinavia, the Netherlands and other European cities test them. Volvo CE showed the A30 Electric in April 2025 and plans to rent it and the A40 Electric to select European customers in 2026. Diesel trucks grow at 3.55% and still account for nearly every unit sold in 2035.

6x6 Trucks Grow at 3.90% While 4x4 Models Grow at 3.10%

Six-wheel-drive haulers with three axles are the industry standard because they keep traction on mud and steep ramps. Volvo describes its A60 as the largest 6x6 articulated hauler, and nearly every new model launched in 2025 and 2026 uses the 6x6 layout. Two-axle 4x4 haulers are offered in smaller numbers for firmer ground, and they grow more slowly at 3.10%.

Mining Leads Application Growth at 4.30%

Mining grows at 4.30% as small and mid-sized mines, especially in Africa and Latin America, use articulated haulers where rigid trucks cannot climb wet ramps. Quarrying and aggregates grows at 4.05% on road-building demand. Construction and earthmoving, the largest application, grows at 3.60% and swings with housing and infrastructure cycles. Waste and landfill grows at 3.40%.

Rental Companies Grow at 4.40% Against 3.60% for Dealer and Direct Sales

Contractors increasingly rent haulers for single projects rather than carry them on the balance sheet, and Volvo CE chose rental as the launch channel for its electric haulers. Dealer and direct sales to owners grow at 3.60%, held back by tariffs and high interest costs in North America.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

A Full Range Renewal Across the Major Brands

In January 2025, Volvo CE unveiled a new hauler lineup from the A25 to the A60, including an all-new A50 for selected markets, claiming up to 15% better fuel efficiency. In March 2025, John Deere launched its 260, 310, 410 and 460 P-Tier trucks, moving the two largest to the 13.6 litre JD14 engine. In October 2025, Caterpillar unveiled next-generation 725, 730, 730 EJ and 735 trucks with the Cat C13 engine, with production starting in January 2026.

Higher Payloads and Simpler Emissions Systems

In March 2026, Komatsu launched the HM460-6 with a 518 hp DBA127 engine without exhaust gas recirculation and a 9-speed transmission. In May 2026, Develon launched the DA45-7, its largest hauler, with about 483 hp from a Scania DC13 engine that meets Tier 4 Final without a diesel particulate filter. Fewer aftertreatment parts lower maintenance costs, which buyers rank alongside payload.

First Serial-Produced Electric Haulers

In April 2025 at bauma, Volvo CE showed the A30 Electric, which it describes as the first serial-produced battery-powered hauler in its size class, alongside an A40 Electric. Both are offered for rent to select European customers in 2026. The rental approach lets contractors test charging and duty cycles before buying.

New Distribution Partnerships in North America

In October 2026, Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas agreed to sell Bell-built articulated trucks under the LANDCROS brand in the US and Canada, starting with the ZD30, ZD45 and ZD50 in the 30 to 50 ton class in early summer 2027. Hitachi says the three models cover classes worth about 90% of North American demand. The deal gives Bell wider dealer reach without diluting its own brand.

Restraints and Challenges

Cyclical Construction Demand in North America

US new financed articulated truck sales fell 7.4% to 1,948 units in the twelve months to September 2025, and used sales fell 4.9% to 1,883. Because North America buys almost half of all haulers by value, a slowdown in US earthmoving cuts global revenue quickly, as shown by the drop from 10,300 units worldwide in 2024 to just over 9,000 in 2025.

Tariffs Hit Imported Haulers

Most articulated haulers sold in the US are built in Sweden, Scotland, Germany, South Africa, Japan or South Korea. Bell Equipment said US tariffs hurt manufacturers based outside the US, and it moved its German hauler plant to a four-day week from August 2025 because of lower output. Its revenue for the six months to June 2025 fell 4% to R6.1 billion and profit fell 30%.

High Cost of Emissions Compliance

Hauler engines above 130 kW must meet EU Stage V limits under Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 and US machines follow EPA nonroad Tier 4 rules. Aftertreatment systems add cost and require ultra-low-sulfur diesel, which is not always available on remote mine sites in Africa and Latin America.

Battery Cost and Charging on Remote Sites

Electric haulers carry large batteries that raise purchase prices, and most earthmoving sites lack high-power grid connections. Until charging and battery costs fall, electric models will stay limited to rental fleets and city projects with zero-emission rules.

Growth Drivers

Recovery and Replacement in North American Earthmoving

North America is the largest market for articulated haulers, with Hitachi estimating annual demand at 5,000 to 6,000 units. After a weak 2025, contractors face an aging fleet and new models from every major brand: Caterpillar's next-generation 725 to 735 entered production in January 2026, Volvo CE opened orders for its next-generation A60 in January 2026, and Komatsu launched the HM460-6 in March 2026. In the US, Caterpillar held 30.3% of new financed sales and Volvo 28.2% in the year to September 2025, and both are using new models to defend share. Highway, pipeline, data center and site development work all need haulers. We estimate fleet replacement and a construction recovery in North America add about +1.3% of annual growth to the global forecast.

Quarry and Mining Demand for Higher-Payload Trucks

Quarries supplying road aggregates and small and mid-sized mines use articulated haulers on ramps and wet pits where rigid trucks struggle. The largest models now carry 41 to 55 tonnes: Bell's B45E carries 41 tonnes and is its best-selling North American model, its B50E carries 44.5 tonnes, and Volvo's A60 carries about 55 tonnes with a 630 hp engine. Rokbak reported a 25-truck order for its RA30 from a US contractor in 2025 and new dealers in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland and Nigeria. Italy's hauler market has grown about 10% a year since 2021 to more than 100 units in 2025. We estimate quarry and mining demand contributes close to 0.9 percentage points of yearly growth, lifting trucks above 40 tonnes to a 4.35% CAGR.

Adoption in Africa, the Middle East and Asia

Rokbak reported growth in Africa in 2025, and large infrastructure and mining projects in Saudi Arabia, India, Indonesia and Australia are bringing articulated haulers into markets that once relied on tipper trucks. Bell Equipment, based in South Africa, sells across the continent, while XCMG and SANY offer lower-priced haulers in Asia. We expect this broader adoption to add roughly +0.5% to global growth, which is why Asia Pacific (APAC) grows at 5.20% and Africa at 4.90% a year.

Opportunities

Electric Haulers on Zero-Emission Sites

European cities and public clients are writing zero-emission requirements into construction tenders. Electric haulers grow at 21.30% a year, and suppliers that pair them with mobile charging and rental terms can win these contracts early.

Payload Management and Autonomy

On-board weighing, hill assist and collision warning raise productivity and safety. Quarries running fixed haul routes are natural early users of semi-autonomous haulers, opening a path to software and service revenue.

North America Buys Almost Half of All Articulated Haulers, While Asia Pacific Grows Fastest

North America

North America held 46.00% of articulated dump trucks revenue in 2025, worth about USD 2.28 billion. The North American market is forecast to reach USD 3.25 billion by 2035, growing at 3.62% a year. US new financed sales were 1,948 units in the year to September 2025, and Hitachi will launch LANDCROS haulers in the US and Canada in 2027.

Europe

Europe accounted for 27.50% of 2025 revenue, about USD 1.36 billion, and is projected to reach USD 1.87 billion by 2035 at a 3.22% CAGR. Volvo CE builds haulers in Braås, Sweden, Rokbak builds in Motherwell, Scotland, and Italy has grown about 10% a year since 2021 to more than 100 units in 2025.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) represented 9.80% of 2025 revenue, worth about USD 0.49 billion, and is expected to reach USD 0.81 billion by 2035, growing at 5.20% a year. Australia is the largest APAC buyer through mining and quarrying, and Japan's Komatsu and Korea's Develon both launched larger trucks in 2026.

Latin America

Latin America held 5.30% of 2025 revenue, about USD 0.26 billion, and is forecast to reach USD 0.40 billion by 2035 at a 4.40% CAGR. Chile, Peru and Brazil lead Latin American demand through mining and road work, and 2 of the largest suppliers, Volvo CE and Caterpillar, run strong dealer networks there.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 4.20% of 2025 revenue, about USD 0.21 billion, and is projected to reach USD 0.33 billion by 2035, growing at 4.70% a year. Saudi Arabia's giga-projects and mining expansion lead Middle East purchases, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Africa

Africa represented 7.20% of 2025 revenue, around USD 0.36 billion, and is expected to reach USD 0.58 billion by 2035 at a 4.90% CAGR. South Africa's Bell Equipment reported revenue of R11.7 billion for 2024, and Rokbak added a Nigerian dealer in 2025 as African demand grew.

Primary Interview Insights

Buying criteria

What do quarry and earthmoving contractors value most in an articulated hauler?

Contractors told us cost per tonne decides most orders, so payload, fuel use and uptime matter more than list price. Dealer parts availability is the next most important factor.

2025 slowdown

Why did hauler orders fall in 2025?

US dealers said high interest rates and tariff uncertainty made contractors delay fleet purchases. Several extended leases or rented trucks instead of buying.

Larger trucks

Why are buyers moving to 45 to 55 tonne haulers?

Quarry managers told us one larger truck needs one operator instead of two smaller ones. Labor shortages make that saving more valuable each year.

Electric haulers

How do contractors view electric articulated haulers?

European contractors said zero-emission tenders are pushing them to test electric trucks through rental. They worry about site charging and want proof of battery life over several seasons.

Brand competition

How will the Hitachi and Bell partnership change the US market?

Dealers expect more choice for Hitachi excavator customers who want a matched hauler. Most think it will take share slowly from smaller brands rather than from the two leaders.
