Spray Drones and Camera-Guided Booms Are Lifting Agricultural Sprayer Sales Out of the 2025 Farm Equipment Trough

Radial Insights sizes the agricultural sprayers market at USD 9.35 Billion in 2025, moving to USD 9.92 Billion in 2026 and USD 16.90 Billion by 2035 on a 6.10% CAGR. That outlook starts from a weak year: Deere's Production and Precision Ag sales fell 17% in fiscal 2025, AGCO's net sales dropped 13.5%, and CNH expects global farm equipment demand to slip about 5% more in 2026 before a 2027 recovery.

The study covers machines that apply crop protection products and liquid fertilizer in the field: self-propelled sprayers, trailed and three-point mounted boom sprayers, orchard and vineyard air-blast sprayers, agricultural spray drones, and handheld and backpack units used in smallholder farming. Values include factory-fitted boom control, nozzle control, cameras and guidance sold with the machine. We exclude aerial application by manned aircraft, stand-alone guidance displays, replacement nozzles and parts, and the chemicals themselves.

Agricultural spray drones are the fastest-growing segment at a 13.20% CAGR. DJI said more than 600,000 of its agricultural drones were in use worldwide by the end of 2025, and China's agriculture ministry counts more than 300,000 drones treating about 30.7 million hectares a year. Targeted spot-spraying systems, led by John Deere See & Spray, follow at 12.40%.

Asia Pacific (APAC) is the largest regional market with a 36.40% share in 2025.

Asia Pacific (APAC) is also the fastest-growing region at a 7.40% CAGR, as drone spraying spreads from China to Southeast Asia, India and Japan. In the agricultural sprayers market, value is moving from steel tanks and booms toward sensors, software and autonomy, which raises the price per machine and changes who competes.

Spray Drones Lead Product Types at 13.20%

Self-propelled sprayers remain the largest product type by value in the Americas and Europe, with machines from John Deere, Case IH, Fendt and Agrifac and the highest price per unit of any sprayer type. They grow at 5.20% as large farms and contractors upgrade to wider booms and better cabs. Drones grow far faster because a single operator can treat small, wet or steep fields that ground rigs cannot reach, and because prices for a 50-100 L drone are a fraction of a self-propelled machine. DJI's Agras T100, launched in July 2025, carries a 100 L spray tank. Trailed sprayers expand at 4.30% in Europe's mid-size farms, mounted sprayers at 3.90%, and handheld units at 3.10% as smallholders in Asia and Africa move to drone services.

Small Tanks Below 1,000 L Grow at 7.20%

The below-1,000 L class includes drones and compact orchard units, so it grows fastest at 7.20%. Tanks above 3,000 L rise at 5.40% because large row-crop farms want fewer refills; Case IH's Patriot 50 series offers tanks up to 4,000 L and Hardi's Arex self-propelled carries 5,000 or 6,000 L. The middle class of 1,000-3,000 L expands at 5.10%.

Targeted Spot Spraying Rises at 12.40%

Conventional broadcast spraying grows only 2.80% as buyers shift spend to precision. Section and nozzle control, now standard on most new booms, grows at 6.30%. Camera-based spot spraying grows at 12.40%: Deere reported that See & Spray cut non-residual herbicide use by about 50% in 2025, and Gen 2 for model-year 2027 extends the system to wheat, barley, canola, sugar beets and peanuts.

Rice and Paddy Spraying Grows Fastest by Crop at 8.30%

Rice paddies are hard for ground sprayers to enter, so drone spraying has spread fastest there, mainly in China, Southeast Asia and Japan. Orchards and vineyards grow at 7.10% as autonomous air-blast sprayers such as GUSS reach more farms. Fruits and vegetables expand at 6.60%, row crops and cereals at 5.40% and turf and other uses at 4.20%.

Battery-Electric Units Lead Power Sources at 12.10%

Battery-electric sprayers, mostly drones and small autonomous robots, grow at 12.10%. Fuel-powered self-propelled machines expand at 4.40% and PTO and hydraulic-driven trailed and mounted units at 4.10%, following tractor sales cycles.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Camera-Guided Spot Spraying Moves to More Crops

In January 2026 John Deere announced See & Spray Gen 2 for model-year 2027 sprayers in its 408R to 616R range, adding wheat, barley, canola, sugar beets and peanuts to the supported crops. In 2025 the system covered more than 5 million acres and saved an estimated 31 million gallons of herbicide mix, figures that give farmers a clear return to weigh against the upgrade price.

Bigger Spray Drones Are Taking Acres From Ground Rigs

DJI launched the Agras T100, T70P and T25P worldwide in July 2025, starting in Southeast Asia and Latin America, with the T100 carrying a 100 L spray tank. By April 2026 DJI said more than 600,000 of its agricultural drones were in use in over 100 countries and on more than 300 crops, and XAG is pairing its P-series drones with ground robots.

Autonomy Arrives in Orchards and Vineyards

Deere bought GUSS Automation in September 2025. GUSS builds autonomous orchard and vineyard sprayers, has more than 250 machines deployed, and lets one operator supervise up to eight units, which addresses the labor shortage in specialty crops.

Higher-Capacity Self-Propelled Machines From Specialists

At Agritechnica in November 2025, Case IH launched the Patriot 50 series with tanks up to 4,000 L and AIM Command FLEX II nozzle control, and Hardi showed its Arex self-propelled sprayer with 5,000 L and 6,000 L tanks. Amazone updated its Pantera 4504 in June 2026 with a new cab and Category 4 filtration, which protects operators from chemical exposure.

Restraints and Challenges

Farm Income and Equipment Demand Are Near a Trough

The USDA Economic Research Service forecast in September 2026 that US net farm income will fall to USD 158.4 billion in 2026, down 2.6% in nominal terms and 5.5% after inflation, according to the USDA ERS farm income forecast. CNH's agriculture sales fell 12% to USD 12.39 billion in 2025 and the company described 2026 demand as at historic trough levels.

Drone Spraying Faces Licensing Hurdles

In the United States, spray drones need a Part 137 agricultural aircraft operator certificate, exemptions and a certificate of authorization, with petitions filed at least 120 days in advance, as set out by the Federal Aviation Administration. Similar rules in Europe, where aerial spraying is restricted by default, slow adoption outside Asia and Latin America.

Drift and Pesticide Rules Add Compliance Cost

The US Environmental Protection Agency finalized its Insecticide Strategy under the Endangered Species Act in April 2025, with spray-drift buffers of up to 300 feet for aerial application and up to 100 feet for ground methods, plus a points system for runoff mitigation. Sprayer makers must add drift-reducing nozzles and documentation tools, and farmers lose treatable area near sensitive habitat.

Specialist Suppliers Are Losing Volume

Exel Industries, which owns Hardi, Berthoud, Tecnoma, Evrard and Agrifac, reported fiscal 2025/26 agricultural spraying sales of EUR 347.6 million, down 13.8%. Lower volumes squeeze the research budgets that mid-size specialists need to keep up with the camera and autonomy programs of Deere, CNH and AGCO.

Growth Drivers

Herbicide Savings From Precision Spraying

Herbicide is one of the largest variable costs on a row-crop farm, and resistant weeds keep pushing spend higher. Deere reported that See & Spray cut non-residual herbicide use by about 50% across more than 5 million acres in 2025 and saved about 31 million gallons of mix. A self-propelled sprayer with camera-based spot spraying sells at a premium, but on large farms the chemical savings can recover much of the premium within a few seasons. AGCO, through PTx and Precision Planting, and CNH, through its Patriot and Guardian lines, are offering their own nozzle control and sensor packages. Radial Insights estimates that precision upgrades contribute about +1.4% of annual growth to the agricultural sprayers market through 2035, mainly in North America, Europe and Brazil.

Drone Adoption in Asia and Latin America

Drones have changed spraying economics for small and wet fields. China's agriculture ministry said in March 2026 that more than 300,000 drones treat over 460 million mu, or about 30.7 million hectares, each year. DJI's global fleet passed 600,000 units by the end of 2025, and its Agras T100 lifts a 100 L tank. Service providers fly drones for smallholders who could never afford a ground rig, which turns handheld spraying into a paid service. We attribute roughly 2.1 percentage points of the market's yearly growth to drones, the largest single contribution, with Asia Pacific (APAC) and Latin America taking most of it.

Labor Shortages and Autonomous Machines

Farms in the US, Europe and Australia report persistent shortages of skilled sprayer operators, and specialty growers face the tightest labor markets. Deere's September 2025 purchase of GUSS Automation brought autonomous orchard sprayers into the largest dealer network in the industry, and one GUSS operator can supervise up to eight machines. XAG's R-series ground robots and autonomous kits from smaller firms follow the same logic. Autonomy and operator-assist features add close to +0.8% to annual market growth in our model, with orchards and vineyards growing at 7.10% as a result.

Opportunities

Spray-as-a-Service and Data Revenue

Drone service operators and dealers can sell treated hectares instead of machines, and sprayer makers can charge per-acre fees for spot-spraying software, as Deere does for See & Spray. Recurring revenue reduces the impact of equipment cycles.

Retrofit Kits for the Installed Fleet

Millions of trailed and mounted sprayers lack section or nozzle control. Retrofit kits for nozzle control, rate control and drift reduction let farmers meet tighter drift rules without buying a new machine, giving component suppliers a market that grows even when new-machine sales fall.

Asia Pacific Holds 36.40% of Agricultural Sprayer Revenue and Grows Fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for 36.40% of the agricultural sprayers market, worth USD 3.40 Billion in 2025. The region is projected to reach USD 6.95 Billion by 2035 at a 7.40% CAGR. China has more than 300,000 agricultural drones in operation treating about 30.7 million hectares a year, and Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and India are expanding drone spraying for rice. Australia adds demand for large self-propelled machines on broadacre farms.

North America

North America holds 26.80% of global revenue, or USD 2.51 Billion in 2025, and is expected to reach USD 4.04 Billion by 2035 at a 4.90% CAGR. Deere's See & Spray covered more than 5 million acres in 2025, and USDA forecasts 2026 net farm income at USD 158.4 billion, which keeps near-term buying cautious. The US also has the strictest drone licensing path through FAA Part 137.

Europe

Europe represents 22.60% of the market, valued at USD 2.11 Billion in 2025 and forecast at USD 3.38 Billion by 2035, a 4.80% CAGR. The region is home to Exel Industries, Amazone, Horsch, Kuhn and Lemken, and trailed sprayers dominate on mid-size farms. Exel's spraying sales fell 13.8% in fiscal 2025/26, and EU pesticide policy, including a December 2025 Commission proposal to make unlimited approvals the default for most active substances, shapes demand.

Latin America

Latin America takes 10.20% of global revenue, or USD 0.95 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 1.86 Billion by 2035 at a 6.90% CAGR. Brazil's soybean, corn and sugarcane farms use large self-propelled sprayers, and DJI chose Latin America as a launch region for its Agras T100 in July 2025. Argentina and Paraguay add contractor demand.

Middle East

The Middle East holds 2.30% of the market, valued at USD 0.22 Billion in 2025 and projected at USD 0.41 Billion by 2035, a 6.60% CAGR. Greenhouse vegetables, date palms and irrigated cereals in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran drive purchases of mounted, air-blast and drone sprayers.

Africa

Africa accounts for 1.70% of global revenue, or USD 0.16 Billion in 2025, and is forecast to reach USD 0.32 Billion by 2035 at a 7.10% CAGR. Backpack sprayers still dominate smallholder farming, but drone service businesses in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa are growing, and commercial farms in South Africa buy trailed and self-propelled machines.

Three Full-Line Groups and One Drone Maker Set the Technology Pace in Agricultural Sprayers

The agricultural sprayers market splits into full-line equipment groups, European spraying specialists and Chinese drone makers. Full-line groups win on dealer reach and integration with tractors and farm software, specialists win on boom engineering and product range, and drone makers win on price per treated hectare in small fields.

Full-Line Equipment Groups

John Deere leads in self-propelled sprayers in North America with its R-series machines, See & Spray camera system, Hagie high-clearance line and the GUSS autonomous orchard sprayers it bought in 2025. AGCO sells RoGator and Fendt Rogator self-propelled sprayers and precision kits through PTx. CNH offers Case IH Patriot and New Holland Guardian self-propelled sprayers, and Kubota owns Kverneland and Great Plains, giving it trailed and mounted sprayers under the Kverneland and Rau brands.

European Spraying Specialists

Exel Industries is the largest sprayer specialist and owns Hardi, Berthoud, Tecnoma, Evrard and Agrifac. Hardi of Denmark is known for trailed and mounted booms and its new Arex self-propelled machine, while Agrifac builds high-capacity Condor self-propelled sprayers. Amazone sells Pantera self-propelled and UX trailed sprayers, Horsch makes Leeb sprayers with BoomControl, Kuhn offers Lexis and Metris trailed sprayers, and Lemken sells Vega and Albatros trailed models. Bargam of Italy and Househam of the UK serve mid-size and contractor buyers.

Drone and Robotics Makers

DJI Agriculture is the global leader in spray drones, with more than 600,000 units in use and an Agras range topped by the 100 L T100. XAG competes with P-series drones and R-series ground robots and sells strongly in China and Southeast Asia.

How Competition Is Shifting

Software and sensors now decide many purchases. Specialists that lack in-house camera systems partner with technology suppliers or offer open interfaces, while full-line groups charge per-acre fees for their own systems. Drone makers face growing pressure from licensing rules in the US and Europe but keep prices low through scale.

Primary Interview Insights

Row-crop farmers

What would make you buy a new sprayer in a weak income year?

Large growers told us herbicide savings are the only argument that works right now. Several said they would rather pay for spot-spraying software than for a bigger tank.

Drone service providers

Where is demand for drone spraying strongest?

Operators in Southeast Asia and Brazil said rice, sugarcane and fungicide passes in wet weather keep their fleets busy. They want bigger tanks and faster battery swaps to cut cost per hectare.

Equipment dealers

How are inventories looking for 2026?

North American dealers said used self-propelled sprayer stocks are high and new orders are mostly for replacement. They expect buying to pick up in 2027 if crop prices improve.

Specialty growers

Why consider autonomous orchard sprayers?

Orchard and vineyard managers said they cannot hire enough tractor drivers for spray season. One operator supervising several machines was the main reason they were testing autonomy.

Component suppliers

What is selling in retrofit kits?

Nozzle and rate-control suppliers told us retrofit demand is steady because drift rules require better droplet control. Farmers keep older booms longer and upgrade the electronics instead.
