Polyurethane leads wheel materials and grows fastest at 6.42%

Polyurethane treads combine load capacity, low rolling resistance and floor protection, which is why Colson bought ESCO Plastics, a Houston polyurethane molder, in July 2025. Polyurethane grows at 6.42%. Nylon and polyolefin wheels, popular on light carts, grow at 5.12%. Rubber grows at 4.38%, phenolic at 4.21%, and cast iron and forged steel at 3.64%, as many plants replace iron wheels that damage floors and are hard to push.

Extra heavy duty casters grow at 5.94%

Light duty casters up to 100 kg grow at 4.86% and medium duty at 5.28%. Heavy duty casters from 500 to 2,000 kg grow at 5.71%. Extra heavy duty units above 2,000 kg post 5.94%, helped by tow trains and die carts; Caster Concepts rates some polyurethane casters at more than 100 tons.

Kingpinless and specialty casters grow at 6.18%

Swivel casters remain the core product and grow at 5.47%. Rigid casters grow at 4.92%. Kingpinless and specialty casters, such as Revvo models built for powered towing and multi-wheel ergonomic designs like the Caster Connection CC Nexus, grow at 6.18% because they last longer under impact and cut push force.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Roll-up acquisitions are concentrating North American supply

Colson Group bought ESCO Plastics in July 2025, Custom Engineered Wheels, with more than 950 products and plants in Baldwyn, Mississippi and Reynosa, Mexico, in July 2026, and Algood Caster Innovations of Toronto in September 2026. TENTE International had earlier bought Darcor of Toronto. Larger groups now control molding, machining and welding in-house.

Casters are being designed for robots

In May 2025 Foot Master announced its All-in-One AGV and AMR caster series, with dual swivel, anti-shock and tilting features and loads of 250 to 630 kg, shown at Automate 2025 in Detroit. Robot casters must keep contact on uneven floors so the drive wheels do not slip.

Ergonomic multi-wheel designs are spreading

In January 2025 Caster Connection added 6 inch and 10 inch sizes to its CC Nexus multi-wheel ergonomic caster, in which each wheel pivots on its own to cut push and pull effort. The 6 inch size is aimed partly at autonomous vehicles.

Trade shows point to strong intralogistics spending

ProMat 2025 in Chicago drew 52,223 registrants and 1,160 exhibitors. LogiMAT 2026 in Stuttgart set a record with 1,671 exhibitors from 46 countries and 69,856 visitors, and MODEX 2026 in Atlanta drew 50,000 registrants from 132 countries.

Restraints and Challenges

Polyurethane feedstock costs are rising

BASF raised Lupranate MDI and TDI prices by USD 250 per tonne in ASEAN and South Asia in September 2026. MDI and TDI are the base of cast polyurethane treads, so higher prices squeeze makers that sell on annual contracts.

Construction cycles drive cart and rack demand

New warehouses and factories buy carts, racks and casters in bulk. The US Census construction spending release put August 2026 private nonresidential spending at USD 773.0 Billion and manufacturing construction at USD 170.7 Billion; a slowdown in these lines would hit first-fit demand.

Low-cost imports pressure prices

Light duty casters are easy to copy, and imports compete mainly on price. Branded makers defend share with load-rated, tested products and faster delivery, but margins on commodity sizes stay thin.

Standards and testing add cost

ANSI ICWM-2018 sets vocabulary, performance and testing requirements for casters and wheels in North America. Testing to these rules, and to medical and food-safety listings such as NSF for food service casters, adds cost for smaller makers.

Growth Drivers

Warehouse robots need specialised casters

The IFR reported in September 2026 that almost 250,000 professional service robots were sold in 2025, up 24%, with 117,000 transport and logistics units. In 2024 the transport and logistics class had reached 102,900 units, up 14%. Most autonomous mobile robots ride on two drive wheels and four casters, so each unit adds several premium casters with shock absorption and precise swivel. Foot Master, Caster Connection and Colson all launched or extended robot-ready lines between 2025 and 2026. We estimate robot fleets add about +1.2% of annual growth to the caster wheels market through 2035, the main reason AGV and AMR casters grow at 11.36%.

Industrial output and warehouse building lift cart demand

US industrial production rose 0.7% in September 2026 from August and 2.2% from a year earlier, with manufacturing up 1.1% year on year. Total US construction spending reached USD 2,203.1 Billion in August 2026 at an annual rate, including USD 773.0 Billion in private nonresidential work. Every new distribution center needs thousands of carts, dollies and racks, and replacement demand follows wear cycles of two to five years on busy floors. LogiMAT 2026 visitor numbers rose by 4,137. This driver is worth roughly +0.9 percentage points on the market CAGR.

Hospital capacity and ergonomic rules favor premium casters

US hospitals ran 907,216 staffed beds across 6,100 hospitals, according to AHA Fast Facts 2026, and the IFR counted about 16,700 medical robots sold in 2024, up 91%. Beds, carts and robots need quiet, non-marking casters with central locking, typically polyurethane or thermoplastic rubber. Employers are also cutting push forces to reduce strain injuries, which drives sales of multi-wheel and large-diameter casters such as the CC Nexus. MedCaster, a Colson brand, focuses on this segment. We attribute close to +0.6% a year of market growth to healthcare and ergonomics, lifting healthcare casters to 5.84%.

Opportunities

Robot OEM partnerships

Robot makers want casters co-designed with their chassis. Suppliers that offer suspension, sensors for wear and fast prototyping can lock in multi-year volumes as fleets grow from 117,000 units a year. Robot casters sell at a premium to standard industrial casters of the same size because they need tighter swivel tolerances, shock-absorbing rigs and treads that do not leave marks on sensor-guided floors. Replacement cycles on robots running two or three shifts are also shorter, which builds a steady aftermarket for suppliers that hold the original design.

Near-shoring in North America

Colson's Reynosa, Mexico polyurethane site and its Canadian acquisition show demand for local supply. Makers with plants in Mexico and Canada can serve US equipment makers with shorter lead times. Algood's in-house stamping, injection molding, CNC machining and robotic welding near Toronto give Colson a second North American base outside the United States. Buyers of carts, racks and hospital beds told us that lead time and stock depth now rank close to price when they pick a caster supplier, which favors makers with local plants and distribution centers.

Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest and the fastest-growing caster wheels region

A handful of multi-brand groups lead a caster wheels market still full of regional specialists

The caster wheels market combines a few global groups with hundreds of regional makers. Leaders compete on load ratings, wheel compounds, delivery speed and engineering support for equipment makers. We group the main players into four tiers.

Multi-brand consolidators

Colson Group, making casters since 1885, owns Colson, Albion Casters, Shepherd Caster, Jarvis Caster, MedCaster, Rhombus, Revvo Caster, IMSA and Pemco. Albion Casters covers heavy duty and custom work, Shepherd Caster light duty and low-profile units, Jarvis Caster NSF-listed food service casters, and Revvo Caster kingpinless casters for power towing. Its 2025 and 2026 deals for ESCO Plastics, Custom Engineered Wheels and Algood add polyurethane molding and capacity in Mexico and Canada. TENTE International of Cologne, founded in 1923, reported EUR 263.5 Million in 2025 revenue and owns Darcor and Bestway.

Heavy duty specialists

Hamilton Caster of Hamilton, Ohio builds extreme duty casters rated from 5,000 to over 30,000 pounds. RWM Casters of Roseland, New Jersey focuses on heavy and custom units. Caster Concepts of Albion, Michigan makes polyurethane casters rated over 100 tons and bought aerospace caster maker Aerol in 2020.

European engineering brands

Blickle of Germany is known for a wide catalog of industrial wheels and casters with in-house polyurethane. Rhombus, now part of Colson, is Europe's oldest industrial caster maker. Darcor, owned by TENTE, specializes in ergonomic casters for heavy carts.

Niche and innovation players

Faultless Caster of Evansville, Indiana serves institutional buyers. Foot Master, based in South Korea, targets AGV and AMR builders. Caster Connection, owned by River Associates since 2022, sells the CC Nexus ergonomic multi-wheel caster. Most of these firms sell through industrial distributors as well as direct to equipment makers, and catalog breadth matters: a cart builder may buy dozens of caster sizes and wheel compounds from one source. Price competition is strongest in light duty sizes, while robot, medical and extra heavy duty casters earn higher margins.
