Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Large Handlers Are Committing Capital to Electric Fleets
In July 2025, Swissport announced an investment of more than EUR 1.5 billion over five years in eco-technology and GSE electrification; its fleet of about 14,500 motorized units was 25% electric. In May 2025, dnata said it would add 800 new GSE units across 10 countries, worth USD 110 million. In May 2026, Menzies reported that it added more than 620 electric units over the prior year and spent USD 200 million on its fleet.
Automation and Remote Operation Arrive on the Apron
In September 2026, TLD carried out a remote-controlled pushback of an Airbus A350-900 at Hong Kong International Airport with an electric TPX-200-MTX-E tug, working with the Airport Authority Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific and HAECO. Remote and autonomous operation could ease staff shortages that slowed turnarounds after the pandemic.
New Electric Products Replace Diesel Workhorses
In July 2026, Textron GSE launched the TUG MX4, an 80-volt lithium-ion baggage tractor that tows up to 60,000 lb. In January 2026, Oshkosh AeroTech delivered its 7,000th LEKTRO electric towbarless tractor to Atlantic Aviation. In September 2025, Oshkosh AeroTech unveiled the Tempest-si compact deicer at the International GSE Expo in Las Vegas.
Private Equity Is Consolidating the Supplier Base
In July 2025, PAI Partners and a subsidiary of ADIA completed the purchase of a majority stake in Alvest, the parent of TLD, with Ardian keeping a minority stake. Alvest has more than 4,000 staff and 11 factories, and new owners are likely to fund further acquisitions and electric product lines.
Restraints and Challenges
High Upfront Cost of Electric Equipment
An electric tug or belt loader costs more to buy than a diesel unit, and dnata's 800-unit order implies an average of about USD 140,000 per unit. Smaller handlers at regional airports work on short contracts and often cannot finance electric fleets without airport support.
Charging Capacity at Airports
Electrifying a full apron fleet needs large grid connections and charging points near stands. Ontario International Airport in California needed a USD 5.53 million project, with a FAA VALE grant of USD 4.15 million, just to expand eGSE charging. Many airports lack the grid capacity to support full fleet conversion before 2030.
Compliance Deadlines Compress Investment Into Few Years
The EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 requires power at contact stands by the end of 2024 and at remote stands by the end of 2029, with no fossil-fueled supply from 2030. These deadlines compress spending for European airports and may strain supplier capacity and lead times.
Cold Climates and Heavy Duty Cycles Limit Batteries
De-icing vehicles and wide-body pushback tugs need high power for long shifts. Battery performance drops in cold weather, so Nordic, Canadian and northern US airports keep diesel or hybrid units longer, slowing electric uptake in those markets.
Growth Drivers
Record Passenger and Aircraft Movements
IATA reported 2025 passenger demand up 5.3%, with load factors at 83.6%, and forecast a record 5.2 billion passengers in 2026, up from 4.98 billion in 2025. ACI World counted 9.8 billion airport passengers in 2025, 6.5% above 2019, and more than 103.1 million aircraft movements. Each additional daily departure needs tugs, loaders and power units, and new terminals in India, China, Saudi Arabia and Southeast Asia come with full equipment fleets. We estimate traffic growth contributes about +2.4% of annual growth to the airport ground support equipment market through 2035.
Decarbonization Rules and Handler Targets
The EU AFIR rules end fossil-fueled aircraft power at stands from 2030, and airports with more than 4 million passengers must supply preconditioned air at contact stands by 2030 on the core network. Changi requires new airside tractors to be electric from March 2025 and all airside vehicles on cleaner energy by 2040. Swissport aims for 55% electric equipment by 2032, while Menzies has already reached 25%. Because electric units cost more than diesel ones, the shift raises spending per unit and adds about 1.9 percentage points a year to the market CAGR.
Fleet Replacement After Years of Deferred Spending
Handlers cut capital spending during 2020 and 2021 and ran older fleets through the traffic recovery. GSE typically lasts 10 to 15 years, so a wave of replacement is now due. Oshkosh airport products sales rose 13% to USD 975.3 million, and dnata already had USD 210 million in framework contracts signed in 2024. Catch-up buying lends the market close to +1.1% of yearly growth through 2030, fading after that.
Opportunities
Funded Airport Electrification Programs
FAA VALE grants cover up to 75% of eligible clean-equipment and charging projects at US airports, as Ontario's USD 4.15 million award shows. Suppliers that package equipment, chargers and grant support can win whole airport programs.
Autonomous and Remote-Controlled Equipment
Remote pushback trials at Hong Kong and autonomous baggage tractor pilots open a premium segment. Handlers facing staff shortages will pay more for equipment that reduces labor per turnaround.
North America Leads Airport Ground Support Equipment Value, but Asia Pacific Grows Fastest
Asia Pacific (APAC)
With a 28.60% share, Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for USD 1,853.3 Million of airport ground support equipment spending in 2025 and reaches USD 4,113.6 Million by 2035 at an 8.30% CAGR. New Asia Pacific airports in China and India and Changi's rule that new airside tractors be electric from March 2025 lift demand, and Weihai Guangtai leads Chinese supply.
North America
North America accounts for 31.50% of 2025 value, or USD 2,041.2 Million, and grows at 5.70% to USD 3,553.3 Million by 2035. Oshkosh AeroTech, Textron GSE and Global Ground Support are based in the United States, and FAA VALE grants, such as Ontario's USD 4.15 million award, fund North American electric GSE charging.
Europe
Airports across Europe represent 27.40% of the market, at USD 1,775.5 Million in 2025, rising to USD 3,270.8 Million by 2035 at a 6.30% CAGR. EU AFIR rules on stand power and preconditioned air drive European spending, and dnata already runs more than 40% electric fleets in Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the UK.
Latin America
Airports in Latin America take a 3.40% share, worth USD 220.3 Million in 2025, and grow at 6.50% to USD 413.6 Million by 2035. Airport concessions in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia require new equipment as Latin American traffic grows, and handlers such as Swissport and Menzies operate across the region.
Middle East
The Middle East holds a 7.30% share, or USD 473.0 Million in 2025, and grows at 8.10% to USD 1,030.8 Million by 2035. Middle East hub expansion in Dubai, Riyadh and Doha drives large orders, and dnata, based in Dubai, is rolling out 800 new units worth USD 110 million.
Africa
As the smallest region, Africa holds a 1.80% share, worth USD 116.6 Million in 2025, and grows at 7.20% to USD 233.8 Million by 2035. Terminal projects in Ethiopia, Nigeria and Egypt add African demand, though most African handlers still buy diesel equipment because of grid limits.

Primary Interview Insights
What drives your equipment replacement plans?
Handlers told us airport tenders now score emissions, so electric fleets help them win and keep contracts. Most plan to replace diesel tractors and belt loaders first because batteries already meet those duty cycles.
What limits faster electrification on the apron?
Airport engineers said grid capacity and charger placement near stands are the main bottlenecks. Several are applying for grants to fund substations before handlers bring in more electric units.
How have order patterns changed since 2024?
Manufacturers said multi-year framework contracts with global handlers now make up a larger share of orders. Lead times for electric tugs lengthened as demand outpaced battery supply.
Where does diesel still make sense?
Operators at northern airports said de-icers and wide-body tugs still need diesel or hybrid power for long winter shifts. They expect hybrids to bridge the gap until battery capacity improves.
What do new airports in Asia and the Middle East buy?
Buyers said new terminals order complete fleets at opening and increasingly specify electric units from the start. Price and local service support decide between Western and Chinese suppliers.
