SUVs, Electric Crossovers and Leisure Towing Push Tow Hitch Sales Ahead of Vehicle Output

Buyers spent USD 3.15 Billion on automotive tow hitches in 2025; Radial Insights expects USD 3.28 Billion in 2026 and USD 4.71 Billion by 2035, a 4.10% CAGR, as more crossovers, pickups and electric SUVs leave the factory ready to tow.

The automotive tow hitches market covers the coupling hardware that lets a light vehicle pull a trailer, caravan, boat or bike carrier: receiver hitches, fixed, detachable and retractable tow bars, gooseneck and fifth-wheel hitches for pickups, and weight-distribution hitches. We count factory-fitted and dealer-installed hitches as well as aftermarket units sold through retailers, installers and e-commerce. Trailer couplers and axles, heavy truck fifth wheels for semi-trailers, standalone wiring kits, brake controllers and bike racks are excluded.

North America is the largest region because of its pickup and RV culture. US RV wholesale shipments rose 2.5% to 342,220 units in 2025, according to the RV Industry Association, and the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram together sold more than 1.78 million pickups in the US that year. Europe follows with a dense network of caravan owners and a strong habit of fitting detachable tow bars to family cars.

Battery electric vehicles are the fastest growing powertrain segment at an 11.20% CAGR, as models such as the Tesla Model Y and Rivian R1S offer factory tow packages. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest growing region at 5.80% a year, led by Australia's caravan market and rising SUV ownership in China.

The supply base was shaken in 2025 and 2026. First Brands Group, owner of Reese and Draw-Tite, filed for Chapter 11 in September 2025, and its case moved to Chapter 7 liquidation in September 2026, while Flex-N-Gate bought the North American Horizon Global towing brands and Westfalia-Automotive Group became independent in Europe.

Retractable Tow Bars Grow Fastest Among Product Types

Receiver hitches are the standard in North America and grow at 3.80%. Retractable and swiveling tow bars, which fold out of sight behind the bumper, grow fastest at 6.10% because European premium brands and electric crossovers offer them as factory options. Weight-distribution hitches grow at 4.80% as heavier travel trailers need load leveling, and gooseneck and fifth-wheel hitches grow at 4.50% on heavy-duty pickups. Fixed and detachable tow bars grow at 3.50%.

Light-Duty Classes Gain From Crossovers

Class I and II hitches rated up to 3,500 lb grow at 4.60% because crossovers and electric SUVs mostly carry bike racks or small trailers. Class IV and V hitches grow at 4.20% on heavy-duty pickups that pull large fifth-wheel RVs and horse trailers. Class III, the common half-ton pickup and midsize SUV rating, grows at 3.90%.

SUVs and Crossovers Lead Vehicle Type Growth

SUVs and crossovers grow at 5.10% as they replace sedans in every major market and are often marketed with tow ratings. Light commercial vans grow at 4.00% on trades and delivery fleets. Pickup trucks grow at 3.70% from a large base, and passenger cars grow at 3.20%, mainly in Europe where family cars still tow caravans.

Electric Vehicles Need New Hitch Designs

Battery electric vehicles grow at 11.20% and hybrids at 6.40%, while internal combustion vehicles grow at 2.60%. Electric models need hitches designed around battery packs, rear motors and heavier curb weights, and their software must manage range while towing.

Factory Fitment Outpaces the Aftermarket

OEM and dealer-installed hitches grow at 4.60% against 3.70% for the aftermarket, as car makers bundle tow packages with integrated wiring, trailer sway control and camera views that are harder to add later.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Towing Brands Change Hands After the First Brands Collapse

First Brands Group, owner of Reese, Draw-Tite, Tekonsha and Bulldog, filed for Chapter 11 in September 2025. In May 2026 Flex-N-Gate bid USD 64 million for Horizon Global's North American towing business, and in September 2026 the court converted the First Brands cases to Chapter 7. In October 2026 Flex-N-Gate's Horizon Automotive Trading said shipments of the licensed Reese, Draw-Tite, Tekonsha, Bulldog and Fulton brands were resuming.

Europe's Towbar Leader Becomes Independent

In February 2026 the former Horizon Global Europe became Westfalia-Automotive Group, headquartered in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, with the Westfalia, Siarr and Witter brands. The transfer released it from First Brands claims and brought about USD 246 million of debt forgiveness, giving Europe's largest towbar maker a cleaner balance sheet.

RV and Leisure Demand Stays Firm

US RV wholesale shipments rose 2.5% to 342,220 units in 2025, and in September 2025 RVIA forecast 2026 shipments of 332,400 to 366,100 units. LCI Industries, parent of CURT, reported 2025 net sales of USD 4,122.0 million, up 10%, with aftermarket sales of USD 932.4 million.

Recalls Raise Attention to Hitch Safety

In January 2025 Horizon Global recalled more than 145,000 Reese hitch receiver locks, and in October 2025 Ford recalled 1,412 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles over loose hitch bolts. In October 2026 Roadmaster recalled 24,656 tow bars. Car makers and installers are adding torque checks and stronger fastener specifications.

Restraints and Challenges

Safety Recalls and Liability

A hitch failure can separate a trailer at highway speed, so recalls are costly. Roadmaster's October 2026 recall covered 24,656 tow bars whose roll pin could loosen (NHTSA recall 26E069), and Kuat recalled 3,845 swing-away hitch adapters the same month. Each recall raises testing and insurance costs.

Supplier Insolvency Disrupts Supply

The First Brands bankruptcy interrupted shipments of some of the best-known US hitch brands for months in 2025 and 2026. Retailers and installers had to switch to CURT, B&W and other suppliers, and some customers lost brand continuity.

RV and Caravan Demand Is Cyclical

European caravan registrations fell about 11% to 54,200 units in 2025, and Germany's caravan registrations fell 13.4%. RV shipments track interest rates and consumer confidence (RVIA shipment report), so hitch demand tied to leisure towing swings with the cycle.

Range Loss Limits Electric Towing

Pulling a trailer can cut an electric vehicle's range sharply, which discourages long-distance caravan trips. Many small electric cars are not homologated to tow at all, limiting fitment in the city car segment.

Growth Drivers

SUV and Pickup Sales Bring Tow-Ready Vehicles

Ford sold 828,832 F-Series pickups in the US in 2025, including the F-150 Lightning, while the Chevrolet Silverado sold 577,434, Ram 374,059 and GMC Sierra 348,222. Most of these trucks leave the dealer with a receiver hitch, and heavy-duty versions often add gooseneck or fifth-wheel prep. Crossovers and SUVs also keep taking share from sedans worldwide, and most are offered with a factory or dealer tow package. Because the hitch is often a paid option, rising SUV and pickup mix lifts attach rates per vehicle. Radial Insights estimates SUV and pickup mix adds about +1.4% of annual growth to the automotive tow hitches market through 2035.

Leisure Towing in North America and Europe

RV Industry Association data show 306,191 towable RVs shipped in the US in 2025, up 2.5%, and LCI Industries guides 2026 North American wholesale shipments at 335,000 to 350,000 units. In Europe, about 161,000 motorhomes and 54,200 caravans were registered in 2025, and Germany alone recorded 94,134 leisure vehicle registrations. Each towable unit needs a hitch on the tow vehicle, often a weight-distribution or detachable model worth several hundred dollars. Thule, a major carrier and towing accessory brand, grew 2025 net sales about 9% to SEK 10,429 million. We estimate leisure towing contributes roughly +0.8% a year to market CAGR.

Electrified Vehicles Offer Factory Tow Packages

Electric SUVs and pickups such as the Tesla Model Y, Rivian R1S and R1T, and Ford F-150 Lightning offer factory hitches, and plug-in hybrids in Europe are popular caravan tow cars because of their torque. These hitches must be engineered around battery packs and rear motors, which favors OEM-approved suppliers and raises unit value. Westfalia, Brink and ACPS Automotive (Oris) supply retractable tow bars for European premium electric models. Electrified fitments add an estimated 0.7 percentage points to annual market growth.

Opportunities

Bike Carriers on Electric Crossovers

E-bikes are heavy, and buyers increasingly carry them on hitch-mounted racks rather than roof racks. A Class I or II receiver on a crossover opens a recurring accessory sale for hitch makers and retailers.

Smart Hitches With Sensors

Weigh Safe and other suppliers offer hitches with built-in scales, and car makers add hitch cameras and trailer recognition. Hitches that report tongue weight and connection status can earn higher prices and help reduce misuse.

North America Holds Almost Half of Tow Hitch Revenue While Asia Pacific Grows Fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 15.40% share of the automotive tow hitches market in 2025. APAC revenue of about USD 485 Million in 2025 is forecast to reach USD 852 Million by 2035, a 5.80% CAGR, the fastest of any region. Asia Pacific vehicle production rose 7.6% to about 59.2 million units in 2025, Australia has a large caravan and boat towing culture, and SUV ownership is rising fast in China.

North America

North America accounted for 46.50% of global tow hitch revenue in 2025. North American sales of about USD 1,465 Million in 2025 should rise to USD 2,127 Million by 2035 at a 3.80% CAGR. US RV wholesale shipments reached 342,220 units in 2025, and US buyers took 828,832 Ford F-Series and 577,434 Chevrolet Silverado pickups, while CURT, B&W and the Flex-N-Gate-owned Reese and Draw-Tite brands lead supply.

Europe

The European market represented 31.20% of global revenue in 2025. European tow hitch revenue moves from about USD 983 Million in 2025 to USD 1,373 Million by 2035, a 3.40% CAGR, the slowest of any region. About 215,000 leisure vehicles were registered in Europe in 2025, including 94,134 in Germany, and Westfalia, Brink, ACPS (Oris) and Bosal supply most factory tow bars.

Latin America

Latin America held a 3.20% share in 2025. Latin American revenue of about USD 101 Million grows to USD 160 Million by 2035, a 4.70% CAGR. Brazil built 2.64 million vehicles in 2025, and midsize pickups such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger used on farms carry hitches as standard equipment in many markets.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 2.10% of 2025 revenue. Middle East sales of about USD 66 Million should reach USD 110 Million by 2035, a 5.20% CAGR. Large SUVs and pickups towing boats, desert buggies and horse trailers drive demand in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Africa

African buyers accounted for a 1.60% share in 2025. African revenue of about USD 50 Million rises to USD 86 Million by 2035, a 5.50% CAGR. New vehicle sales in Africa rose 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025, according to OICA, and South Africa's pickup-heavy market and off-road trailer culture support hitch sales.

Ownership Changes Reshape a Brand-Driven Tow Hitch Market Led by CURT, Westfalia and Brink

The automotive tow hitches market is moderately fragmented. A handful of groups supply most factory tow bars and receiver hitches, while dozens of regional fabricators serve the aftermarket. Brand recognition, vehicle-specific fit lists covering thousands of models and installer relationships matter as much as steel fabrication. The 2025 to 2026 restructuring of First Brands has shifted share toward rivals.

North American Leaders

CURT, owned by Lippert (LCI Industries), is one of the largest receiver hitch brands in North America and benefited when First Brands' supply was disrupted. Horizon Automotive Trading, a Flex-N-Gate subsidiary, now ships the Reese, Draw-Tite, Tekonsha, Bulldog and Fulton brands. B&W Trailer Hitches is known for gooseneck and Turnoverball hitches for heavy-duty pickups, and Andersen Hitches and Weigh Safe sell premium weight-distribution and scale-equipped hitches.

European Towbar Specialists

Westfalia-Automotive Group, independent since February 2026, makes fixed, detachable and retractable tow bars under the Westfalia, Siarr and Witter brands. Brink Group, owned by DexKo Global, supplies tow bars across Europe. ACPS Automotive, known for its Oris brand, and Bosal supply many European car makers with factory-fitted tow bars.

Accessory and Carrier Brands

Thule, with 2025 net sales of SEK 10,429 million, sells hitch-mounted bike carriers that raise receiver demand. Kuat makes hitch racks and adapters, and Roadmaster supplies tow bars for flat-towing cars behind motorhomes.

Distribution and Installation

Camco and Uriah Products sell towing accessories and hitch components through RV dealers and retailers. Installers and e-commerce sites compete on fit guides and installation speed, and car dealers increasingly install OEM-branded hitches before delivery.
