Hybrids and heavy trucks keep the Automotive Pistons Market growing to USD 4,395.07 Million by 2035
Despite the shift to battery-electric cars, the global Automotive Pistons Market grows from USD 3,742.60 Million in 2025 to USD 3,803.23 Million in 2026 and USD 4,395.07 Million by 2035, a modest 1.62% CAGR in Radial Insights' estimate.
The study covers pistons for reciprocating internal combustion engines in passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles and two-wheelers, supplied to engine makers and to the replacement trade. It includes cast and forged aluminum pistons, steel pistons for heavy-duty diesel and hydrogen engines, and the coatings applied to piston skirts and crowns. Piston rings, pins and cylinder liners sold separately, pistons for marine, rail, power generation and off-highway machinery, and brake caliper pistons are excluded. Values are at first-sale prices.
The base is large because combustion engines still power most new vehicles. OICA counted about 96.4 million vehicles produced in 2025, and the IEA put electric car sales above 20 million, so roughly three in four new cars still carry a piston engine, including full and plug-in hybrids. Every four-cylinder engine needs four pistons, and the global fleet keeps pulling replacement pistons for rebuilds.
The fastest-growing segment is Hybrid-Dedicated Gasoline engine pistons at 6.20% a year, followed by thermal barrier and crown-coated pistons at 4.60% and steel pistons at 4.40%. The fastest-growing region is Africa at 2.85%, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 54.60% of 2025 demand and Europe barely grows at 0.18%.
The supplier base is restructuring. Rheinmetall agreed in June 2026 to sell its Power Systems division, home of the Kolbenschmidt brand, to AEQUITA for a provisional EUR 350 million, and MAHLE said piston systems were among the largest contributors to its new OEM orders in 2025.

Steel pistons grow at 4.40% while cast aluminum flattens
Cast Aluminum pistons, used in most car engines, grow at just 0.95% as combustion car output plateaus. Forged Aluminum pistons grow at 2.15% on turbocharged and performance gasoline engines. Steel pistons grow fastest at 4.40% because heavy-duty diesel engines run higher peak cylinder pressures to meet efficiency and emission targets, and hydrogen combustion engines favor steel for heat resistance.
Hybrid-Dedicated Gasoline pistons lead at 6.20%
Hybrid-Dedicated Gasoline engines, which run Atkinson cycles with high compression ratios, are the fastest-growing fuel segment at 6.20%. Alternative Fuels, including CNG, LPG, ethanol and hydrogen, grow at 4.85%. Conventional Gasoline pistons grow at 1.10% and Diesel pistons only at 0.35% as diesel cars fade in Europe and India, partly offset by trucks.
Two-wheelers and heavy commercial vehicles outpace cars
Passenger Cars, still the largest vehicle group, grow at 1.30%. Two-Wheelers grow at 2.95% because motorcycle demand in India, Southeast Asia and Africa remains largely combustion-powered. Heavy Commercial Vehicles grow at 2.40% as diesel trucks stay dominant on long-haul routes, and Light Commercial Vehicles grow at 1.55%.
Coated pistons gain share as engines run hotter
Uncoated pistons grow at 0.40%. Skirt-Coated pistons, with graphite or polymer layers that cut friction, grow at 2.10%. Thermal Barrier and Crown-Coated pistons grow at 4.60% because hybrid and hydrogen engines run hotter combustion and need crown protection.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Defense and automotive groups are exiting piston businesses
Rheinmetall signed an agreement in June 2026 to sell 100% of its Power Systems division to Munich-based AEQUITA for a provisional EUR 350 million, with closing expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. The division had about EUR 2 billion of 2025 sales and roughly 6,250 employees, and the Pierburg, Kolbenschmidt and Motorservice brands stay with the business. Rheinmetall had already sold its large-bore and small-bore piston operations in 2023 and 2024.
Leading suppliers are recommitting to combustion engines
MAHLE reported 2025 sales of EUR 11.257 billion and adjusted EBIT of EUR 442 million in April 2026. The company said combustion engine products made up a larger share of order intake, and piston systems and air intake modules were among the largest contributors to new OEM orders. India was MAHLE's fastest-growing region, with currency-adjusted growth above 20%.
Indian piston makers are diversifying beyond the core
Shriram Pistons and Rings reported FY26 consolidated revenue of Rs 4,571.3 crore and profit after tax of Rs 561.4 crore in June 2026. Its core piston and ring business fell to 79% of revenue from 96% in FY24 after it acquired Antolin's Indian lighting and interior units in January 2026, and the company proposed renaming itself SPR Auto Technologies.
Hydrogen combustion engines open a new piston application
MAHLE supplies a hydrogen power cell unit, made up of the piston, rings, pin and cylinder liner, for MAN Truck and Bus's 16.8-litre hTGX hydrogen engine, with about 200 trucks planned from 2025. MAHLE said it is working on almost 30 hydrogen engine projects. In March 2025, Cummins helped found an alliance for hydrogen technologies. Alternative fuel engine pistons grow at 4.85% in our forecast.
Restraints and Challenges
Battery-electric cars remove pistons entirely
The IEA reported more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025, about one in four new cars, and expects about 23 million in 2026, close to 30% of new car sales. Each battery-electric car is a lost sale of four or more pistons, which is why Cast Aluminum pistons grow at just 0.95% and Europe at 0.18% a year in our forecast.
European vehicle output is stagnant
European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025 according to OICA, and the Americas fell 2.1% to 18.74 million. Piston plants in these regions face low utilization, and suppliers carry restructuring costs to consolidate capacity.
Euro 7 adds cost without adding volume
Euro 7 applies to new car and van types from November 29, 2026 and to all new cars a year later, with heavy-duty vehicles following from November 2027. Compliance requires better ring sealing, lower oil consumption and tighter piston tolerances, which raises engineering spend on engines whose volumes are falling.
Ownership uncertainty during divestments
The Rheinmetall Power Systems sale, still subject to regulatory approval until the fourth quarter of 2026, and earlier carve-outs leave some piston plants under new owners with private equity return targets. Automakers watch for supply risk and pricing changes during these transitions.
Growth Drivers
Hybrid vehicles keep piston engines in new cars
Full and plug-in hybrids keep a piston engine on board, and automakers are launching hybrid-dedicated engines with high compression and long strokes. China produced 16.626 million new energy vehicles in 2025 according to OICA, a large share of them plug-in hybrids and range extenders, and MAHLE is promoting range-extender systems with high-voltage generators. These engines need forged or coated pistons that carry higher prices than standard cast units. Hybrid-Dedicated Gasoline pistons grow at 6.20% a year, and we estimate hybrids add about 0.7 percentage points to the market's annual growth, offsetting much of the loss from battery-electric cars. Hybrid engines also start and stop far more often than conventional engines over their life, which raises demand for low-friction skirt coatings and durable ring grooves.
Vehicle output and two-wheeler demand in Asia and Africa
Asia-Pacific produced about 59.2 million vehicles in 2025, up 7.6% and more than 61% of the world total, according to OICA. India built 6.49 million vehicles and China 34.53 million, while African vehicle sales rose 22% to 1.29 million units. Motorcycles and scooters in India, Southeast Asia and Africa remain overwhelmingly combustion-powered, and MAHLE's above-20% growth in India and Shriram Pistons and Rings' FY26 revenue of Rs 4,571.3 crore show how strong this demand is. With roughly three in four new cars sold worldwide in 2025 still lacking a plug, according to IEA figures, the installed base of piston engines keeps growing in these regions. Two-Wheelers grow at 2.95% a year, and this volume driver lifts the market by close to 0.9 points annually.
Heavy trucks and hydrogen engines need steel pistons
Long-haul trucks will rely on diesel and, increasingly, hydrogen and natural gas combustion engines through 2035. Heavy-duty engines run at higher cylinder pressures to meet efficiency rules, which pushes a switch from aluminum to steel pistons that are several times more valuable. MAN's 16.8-litre hydrogen engine uses MAHLE's piston-based power cell unit, and MAHLE's Morristown, Tennessee plant has made steel pistons since 1978. Steel pistons grow at 4.40% and Heavy Commercial Vehicles at 2.40%. We credit heavy-duty and hydrogen demand with about 0.5 points of yearly growth.
Opportunities
Coatings for hotter, cleaner engines
Thermal Barrier and Crown-Coated pistons grow at 4.60% a year as hybrid and hydrogen engines run hotter and Euro 7 tightens oil consumption limits. Suppliers with coating know-how can sell higher-value pistons into flat engine volumes.
Aftermarket rebuild demand in emerging markets
The Aftermarket grows at 2.05% a year, faster than OEM supply, as older combustion fleets in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East need rebuilds. Branded replacement programs from MAHLE, Tenneco's Federal-Mogul and KS Kolbenschmidt's Motorservice reach these buyers.
Asia Pacific (APAC) supplies over half of piston demand while Europe stalls
Piston demand follows combustion engine output and the size of older vehicle fleets. Each region is described below with its own share, values and growth rate.
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 54.60% of the Automotive Pistons Market in 2025, worth USD 2,043.46 Million. APAC demand is forecast to reach USD 2,540.24 Million by 2035, growing at 2.20% a year. The region produced about 59.2 million vehicles in 2025 according to OICA, including 6.49 million in India, and two-wheeler engines in India and Southeast Asia add large piston volumes. Chinese plug-in hybrids and Indian motorcycles keep APAC piston output growing even as electric cars gain share.
North America
North America accounts for 15.40% of global demand, valued at USD 576.36 Million in 2025. The North America market grows at 0.85% a year to USD 627.27 Million by 2035. Pickups and heavy trucks with large engines keep pistons per vehicle high, and the aftermarket for older vehicles is deep. MAHLE's Morristown plant in Tennessee and Tenneco's Federal-Mogul brand serve local engine makers and parts distributors.
Europe
Europe holds 18.70% of the market, worth USD 699.87 Million in 2025, and grows at just 0.18% a year to USD 712.57 Million by 2035. European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025, battery-electric share keeps rising, and Euro 7 adds compliance cost. Europe remains home to MAHLE and KS Kolbenschmidt, whose plants now focus on hybrids, trucks and hydrogen engines.
Latin America
Latin America accounts for 6.20% of demand, valued at USD 232.04 Million in 2025. The Latin America market grows at 1.90% a year to USD 280.10 Million by 2035. Brazil's flex-fuel engines running on ethanol keep combustion strong, and older fleets drive steady rebuild demand.
Middle East
The Middle East holds 3.10% of the market, worth USD 116.02 Million in 2025, and grows at 2.05% a year to USD 142.12 Million by 2035. High temperatures and long driving distances shorten engine life, and Middle East buyers rely heavily on aftermarket pistons for SUVs and commercial vehicles.
Africa
Africa accounts for 2.00% of global demand, valued at USD 74.85 Million in 2025, and is the fastest-growing region at 2.85% a year, reaching USD 99.14 Million by 2035. African vehicle sales rose 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025 according to OICA. A large fleet of imported used vehicles and fast motorcycle growth in East and West Africa support the higher rate.
