Electric compressors push the Automotive AC Compressors Market to USD 22.10 Billion by 2035

Valued by Radial Insights at USD 11.86 Billion in 2025, the global Automotive AC Compressors Market climbs to USD 12.62 Billion in 2026 and USD 22.10 Billion in 2035, compounding at 6.42% a year.

Our scope covers refrigerant compressors fitted to passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, heavy trucks, buses and coaches, sold to vehicle makers and to the independent replacement trade. It includes belt-driven fixed and variable displacement units on combustion vehicles and high-voltage electric compressors with integrated inverters on hybrid, battery-electric and fuel cell vehicles. Stand-alone parking coolers, transport refrigeration units for trailers, and remanufactured cores sold between rebuilders are excluded. Values are at first-sale prices.

The market's value is moving away from the engine belt. An electric compressor sells for several times the price of a mechanical unit because it carries its own motor and power electronics, and on battery-electric cars it also cools the battery pack during fast charging and drives the heat pump in winter. The IEA reported more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025, roughly one in four new cars, and expects about 23 million in 2026.

By segment, R-744 (CO2) compressors grow fastest at 18.40% from a small base, and Electric Compressors as a type grow at 13.60%, more than double the market rate. By region, Africa is the fastest at 7.05% from a small base, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 52.40% of 2025 demand and remains the center of electric compressor output.

Investment is following the shift. MAHLE started high-voltage e-compressor production in Morristown, Tennessee in 2025 and opened a 300,000-unit e-compressor plant in Coimbatore, India in 2026, Valeo opened a 25,000 square meter electric compressor site in Bursa, Turkiye in October 2025, and Subros in India is localizing electric compressors with technology from Denso and Toyota Industries.

Electric Compressors lead at 13.60% while mechanical types stall

Mechanical Variable Displacement compressors still account for a large share of units on gasoline and diesel cars, but they grow at only 2.40% as combustion vehicle output plateaus. Mechanical Fixed Displacement units, common on entry cars and older platforms, grow at 0.85%. Electric Compressors grow at 13.60% because every battery-electric and most plug-in hybrid vehicles need one, and full hybrids increasingly use them so cabin cooling continues when the engine stops.

Scroll technology rises with electrification

Scroll compressors, the dominant design for electric units, grow at 12.10%. Swash Plate designs, the workhorse of belt-driven variable compressors, grow at 2.20%, and Wobble Plate units slow to 0.95%. Rotary Vane compressors, used on small cars and some electric applications, grow at 3.10%.

Buses and coaches grow fastest among vehicle types

Passenger Cars, which account for most of the market, grow at 6.55%. Buses and Coaches grow fastest at 8.90% because electric city buses need large electric compressors for both cabin and battery cooling, and Valeo's EDC-120 unit for e-buses enters production in China in 2026. Light Commercial Vehicles grow at 6.20% and Heavy Trucks at 5.15% as sleeper cab and electric truck programs add electric units.

Low-GWP refrigerants reshape compressor design

R-134a compressors grow at just 0.45% as the refrigerant is phased out of new cars in Europe, the United States and other regions. R-1234yf compressors grow at 6.85% and now serve most new light vehicle programs in those markets. R-744 (CO2) compressors grow at 18.40% because CO2 avoids fluorinated chemistry entirely, but they run at much higher pressures and need heavier, more expensive designs.

OEM fitment outpaces the aftermarket

OEM sales grow at 6.80% as new electrified platforms launch. The Aftermarket grows at 4.95%, supported by a large installed base of belt-driven compressors that wear out, while electric compressors on young electric vehicles will reach replacement age mainly after 2030.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Tire and thermal groups are combining under new ownership

Hankook and Company Group completed its acquisition of Hanon Systems in January 2025, becoming majority shareholder with a 54.77% stake. Hanon, which describes itself as the world's second-largest automotive thermal management supplier, reported 2025 revenue of KRW 10.88 trillion, up 8.9%, and operating profit of KRW 271.8 billion in February 2026. Ownership by a tire maker gives Hanon a stable parent while it invests in electric compressors and heat pumps.

Suppliers are localizing e-compressor production near electric vehicle plants

MAHLE announced in August 2025 that it would build high-voltage air conditioning e-compressors in Morristown, Tennessee, its first such units made for North America, adding nearly 50 jobs at a site of almost 800 people. In August 2026 MAHLE began e-compressor production in Coimbatore, India with a EUR 7 million investment and installed capacity of more than 300,000 units a year.

Electric buses are becoming a distinct compressor market

Valeo unveiled its EDC-120 electric compressor with an integrated inverter for electric buses at Busworld in Brussels in October 2025, with production set to start in China in 2026. The same month Valeo opened a 25,000 square meter electric compressor plant in the Bursa Technology Organized Industrial Zone in Turkiye. Bus and coach compressors grow at 8.90% in our forecast.

India is building its own electric compressor supply chain

Subros won a Rs 1,280 crore order from Maruti Suzuki in January 2026 for electric and hybrid vehicle compressors over a seven-year lifecycle. In August 2026 it signed a localization agreement with Denso and Toyota Industries, with a Rs 265 crore expansion at Karsanpura, Gujarat targeting 400,000 units a year.

Restraints and Challenges

PFAS rules create uncertainty over fluorinated refrigerants

The European Chemicals Agency published an updated universal PFAS restriction proposal under REACH on August 20, 2025, and listed transport among the uses assessed for alternative restriction options. R-1234yf is a fluorinated refrigerant, so compressor makers face uncertainty over whether to invest further in R-1234yf designs or move to R-744 systems, which need heavier components rated for far higher pressures.

Electric compressor costs are high for entry vehicles

An electric compressor combines a scroll mechanism, a motor and an inverter, which makes it several times more expensive than a belt-driven unit. Entry-level electric cars in India, Southeast Asia and Latin America are price sensitive, and cost pressure on these units limits supplier margins even as volumes grow.

Electric vehicle demand is uneven by region

Global electric car sales fell 8% in the first quarter of 2026 compared with a year earlier, which the IEA linked to policy changes in China and the United States. European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025 according to OICA. Suppliers that built electric compressor capacity for faster ramps face under-used lines in some plants.

Mechanical compressor volumes are shrinking

Fixed displacement compressors grow at just 0.85% and wobble plate designs at 0.95% in our forecast. Plants built for these products need retooling or closure, and suppliers with large mechanical footprints, especially in Europe, carry restructuring costs.

Growth Drivers

Electrified vehicles need high-voltage compressors for cabin and battery cooling

The IEA counted more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025 and expects about 23 million in 2026, close to 30% of new cars. China produced 16.626 million new energy vehicles in 2025, up 29%, according to OICA. Every one of these vehicles needs an electric compressor, and on battery-electric cars the compressor also chills the pack during DC fast charging, which raises the required capacity. Suppliers are responding with new plants, such as MAHLE's Morristown line in Tennessee and its 300,000-unit Coimbatore plant. Electric compressors grow at 13.60% a year in our model. Suppliers are adding 800-volt variants for fast-charging platforms, and those units carry higher prices than 400-volt designs. Subros' Rs 1,280 crore Maruti Suzuki order shows that even cost-focused automakers in India are now sourcing electric compressors in volume. We estimate this driver alone contributes about 3.4 percentage points of the market's yearly growth, by far the largest factor.

Heat pumps raise compressor value per vehicle

A heat pump uses the AC compressor year-round to heat the cabin, replacing resistive heaters that drain range in cold weather. Heat pumps are moving from premium electric models into mainstream ones, which increases compressor duty cycles, displacement and value. Valeo and Hanon Systems both market heat pump systems built around their electric compressors, and Hanon's 8.9% revenue growth in 2025 reflects demand for this content. In cold markets such as Northern Europe and Canada, heat pumps can recover a meaningful part of the winter range loss, which is why automakers are making them standard rather than optional. Scroll compressors grow at 12.10% in our forecast, and we credit heat pump adoption with roughly 0.8 points of annual market growth.

Low-GWP refrigerant rules force compressor redesign

The EU MAC Directive bans refrigerants with a global warming potential above 150 in new cars, which moved European programs to R-1234yf, while US EPA programs have moved most new US light vehicles to the same refrigerant. Each change in refrigerant requires new compressor seals, lubricants and, in the case of R-744, high-pressure housings. The PFAS proposal published by ECHA in August 2025 adds pressure to consider CO2. R-1234yf compressors grow at 6.85% and R-744 compressors at 18.40%. Refrigerant transitions add around 0.6 points to the market's annual growth through 2035.

Opportunities

Electric bus and truck thermal systems

Electric buses need large compressors for cabins and battery packs, and Buses and Coaches grow at 8.90% in our forecast. Valeo's EDC-120 shows suppliers building dedicated products for this segment, while electric truck programs create similar demand for high-capacity units.

Localized supply in India and Southeast Asia

India produced 6.49 million vehicles in 2025 according to OICA, and Southeast Asian electric car share reached close to 20% that year according to the IEA. Local plants such as Subros' 400,000-unit Karsanpura expansion and MAHLE's Coimbatore site can win cost-sensitive programs from global brands and local automakers.

Asia Pacific (APAC) commands over half of compressor demand as China leads electric vehicle output

Compressor demand follows vehicle output, weighted toward regions with high electric vehicle production and hot climates. Each region below is described with its 2025 share, values and growth rate.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 52.40% of the Automotive AC Compressors Market in 2025, worth USD 6.21 Billion. APAC demand is projected to reach USD 12.09 Billion by 2035 at a 6.88% CAGR. The region produced about 59.2 million vehicles in 2025, according to OICA, and China alone made 16.626 million new energy vehicles. Japanese and Korean suppliers such as Denso, Toyota Industries and Hanon Systems compete with Chinese makers including Aotecar, while India adds capacity through MAHLE Coimbatore and Subros.

North America

North America accounts for 17.80% of global demand, valued at USD 2.11 Billion in 2025. The North America market grows at 5.62% a year to USD 3.65 Billion by 2035. Large SUVs and pickups with high cooling loads keep value per vehicle high. MAHLE's Morristown line, opened in 2025 with nearly 50 new jobs, makes the first MAHLE high-voltage e-compressors for North American programs.

Europe

Europe holds 19.30% of the market, worth USD 2.29 Billion in 2025, and grows at 5.88% a year to USD 4.05 Billion by 2035. European production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million vehicles in 2025, but Europe leads in heat pumps and R-744 systems. Europe is also where PFAS restrictions under REACH are being debated, which pushes European suppliers to develop CO2 compressors.

Latin America

Latin America accounts for 5.60% of demand, valued at USD 0.66 Billion in 2025. The Latin America market grows at 6.10% a year to USD 1.20 Billion by 2035. Brazil's hot climate means near-universal AC fitment, and a large fleet of older cars supports aftermarket compressor sales.

Middle East

The Middle East holds 3.20% of the market, worth USD 0.38 Billion in 2025, and grows at 6.35% a year to USD 0.70 Billion by 2035. Extreme summer temperatures in the Gulf shorten compressor life, which lifts replacement demand, and Middle East buyers favor high-capacity units for SUVs.

Africa

Africa accounts for 1.70% of global demand, valued at USD 0.20 Billion in 2025, and grows fastest at 7.05% a year to USD 0.40 Billion by 2035. African vehicle sales rose 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025 according to OICA. Rising AC fitment on new cars in Egypt, Morocco and South Africa drives the faster rate.
