Stricter Euro 7 and US Truck Rules Offset Electric Car Gains, Keeping Exhaust System Revenue on a Slow Upward Path

At USD 41.60 Billion in 2025, the automotive exhaust systems market is set to reach USD 42.18 Billion in 2026 and USD 47.80 Billion by 2035, a 1.40% CAGR, according to Radial Insights. Fewer combustion engines will be built in some regions, but each new exhaust carries more stainless steel, sensors and aftertreatment hardware.

This study covers the systems that carry exhaust gas from the engine to the tailpipe on road and off-highway vehicles. It includes exhaust manifolds, front and rear pipes, tailpipes, mufflers and resonators, the stainless steel canning and housings that hold catalysts, diesel and gasoline particulate filters and SCR units, plus hangers, clamps and heat shields. It covers OEM fitment and replacement sales. We exclude the value of catalyst coatings and precious metals, ceramic substrates sold on their own, exhaust gas sensors, exhaust gas recirculation valves, turbochargers and stationary engine exhaust.

Two trends pull the automotive exhaust systems market in opposite directions. Electric cars passed 20 million sales in 2025, about one quarter of the global market according to the IEA, and a battery-electric car has no exhaust at all. Yet Euro 7, Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, applies to new car types from 29 November 2026 with longer durability demands, and hybrids, which keep a full exhaust, took 34.5% of EU registrations in 2025.

The fastest-growing segment is hybrid electric vehicles at a 5.90% CAGR, followed by gas-fueled engines at 4.80% and titanium and other alloys at 3.90%. Aftertreatment canning grows at 2.35%, while exhaust manifolds grow at only 0.40% as more engines integrate the manifold into the cylinder head. The aftermarket grows at 2.05%, ahead of OEM at 1.25%.

Asia Pacific (APAC) is the largest region with a 43.60% share in 2025, and the Middle East is the fastest-growing region at a 2.35% CAGR. Europe grows slowest at 0.65%.

Aftertreatment canning leads component growth

Aftertreatment canning and housings grow at 2.35% a year because Euro 7, China 6b and the US 2027 heavy-duty NOx rule require larger catalysts, gasoline particulate filters and SCR systems that must last longer. Hangers, clamps and heat shields grow at 1.25%, mufflers and resonators at 1.10%, and pipes and tailpipes at 0.95%. Exhaust manifolds grow at only 0.40% because many new engines cast the manifold into the cylinder head.

Stainless steel and premium alloys gain share

Stainless steel grows at 1.80% a year as longer durability rules push automakers away from aluminized steel, which grows at only 0.30%. Titanium and other alloys grow at 3.90% from performance cars, motorcycles and weight-sensitive hybrid platforms.

Heavy trucks lead vehicle growth

Medium and heavy commercial vehicles grow at 2.90% a year because truck exhausts carry large SCR and particulate filter systems and diesel trucks are electrifying slowly. Two-wheelers grow at 2.60%, off-highway vehicles at 2.40% and light commercial vehicles at 1.70%. Passenger cars grow at 0.80% as battery-electric share rises.

Hybrids are the fastest fuel segment

Hybrid electric vehicles grow at 5.90% a year because each hybrid keeps a full exhaust, often with extra heat management for frequent engine restarts. Gas-fueled engines grow at 4.80% with CNG cars in India and natural gas trucks in China. Diesel grows at 1.20%, held up by trucks, while gasoline grows at 0.70%.

The aftermarket outpaces OEM supply

The aftermarket grows at 2.05% a year, against 1.25% for OEM. Mufflers and rear pipes corrode after eight to twelve years, especially where roads are salted, so an ageing fleet drives steady replacement.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Euro 7 raises durability and hardware content

Euro 7 applies to new car and van types from 29 November 2026, to all new cars from 29 November 2027, and to new heavy truck and bus types from 29 May 2028. It extends emission durability and adds limits for brake particles and tire abrasion. For exhaust makers, longer durability means more stainless steel and larger, better insulated aftertreatment housings.

The US is revising, not scrapping, its 2027 truck NOx rule

The EPA formally proposed amendments to its 2027 heavy-duty NOx rule on July 9, 2026. The proposal keeps the NOx reduction levels of the original rule, which set a limit of 0.035 g/hp-hr in normal operation, but would roll back the 450,000-mile warranty requirement. Truck exhaust makers therefore still need new aftertreatment designs for 2027.

Suppliers benefit from a slower shift to electric cars

FORVIA said its Clean Mobility group grew 8.7% on an organic basis in the third quarter of 2025, to EUR 959 Million, benefiting from the electrification slowdown and strong demand from Ford and Stellantis in North America. It also took over an exhaust solutions business from a major European automaker.

India is becoming a hub for exhaust production

Tenneco Clean Air India launched an initial public offering of about INR 3,600 crore in November 2025, with a price band of INR 378 to INR 397 per share. The company reported a 57% share of commercial truck clean-air systems and a 68% share of off-highway clean-air systems in India for fiscal 2025.

Restraints and Challenges

Battery-electric cars remove the exhaust entirely

Battery-electric cars took 17.4% of EU car registrations in 2025, according to ACEA, up from 13.6% in 2024. Each battery-electric car that replaces a combustion model removes an entire exhaust system, typically worth several hundred dollars, from OEM demand.

Supplier revenues are under pressure

Eberspaecher reported 2025 sales of EUR 4,979.8 Million in May 2026, down 6.6% from EUR 5,333.2 Million, as vehicle output in Europe stayed weak. Lower volumes make it harder for exhaust makers to cover plant and tooling costs.

Steel and nickel price swings squeeze margins

Stainless steel grades used in exhaust systems contain nickel and chromium, whose prices are volatile. Most OEM contracts pass through only part of the raw material cost, and with a delay, which hurts supplier margins when prices rise.

Regulatory uncertainty in the US

The EPA's July 2026 proposal to change warranty and useful life rules for 2027 trucks has left engine and exhaust makers uncertain about final hardware specifications, which delays some investment decisions in North America.

Growth Drivers

Tighter emission rules add aftertreatment hardware

Euro 7, Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, applies to new car types from 29 November 2026 and to new truck types from 29 May 2028, with longer durability requirements than Euro 6. The US EPA's 2027 truck rule keeps a NOx limit of 0.035 g/hp-hr, and China and India continue to enforce China 6b and Bharat Stage VI. Automakers including Volkswagen, Stellantis, Daimler Truck and Tata Motors must fit larger catalyst and filter housings and better insulated pipes. We estimate tighter rules add about +0.7% of annual growth to the market through 2035, concentrated in aftertreatment canning, which grows at 2.35% a year.

Hybrids keep exhaust volume alive

Hybrids are replacing pure gasoline cars faster than battery-electric cars are. ACEA data show 3.73 million hybrid-electric cars and 1.02 million plug-in hybrids registered in the EU in 2025, together 43.9% of the market. Toyota, Hyundai, BYD and Geely are expanding hybrid output across Asia, Europe and Latin America. Every hybrid needs a full exhaust, often with extra heat management because the engine starts and stops often. This trend contributes roughly 0.5 percentage points to the market's yearly expansion and makes hybrids the fastest fuel segment at 5.90%.

Commercial and off-highway demand stays strong

Trucks, buses and construction machines electrify more slowly than cars, and their exhausts are large and expensive. Tenneco Clean Air India reported an incremental lifetime order book of INR 98,400 Million in December 2025, and FORVIA's Clean Mobility group grew 8.7% organically in the third quarter of 2025. Cummins, Volvo, Daimler Truck and Caterpillar continue to buy SCR and particulate filter systems for new engines. This driver lifts growth by an estimated +0.4% a year and pushes the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segment to a 2.90% CAGR.

Opportunities

Lightweight stainless and titanium systems

Automakers that want to cut weight on hybrids and performance cars are open to thinner stainless steel and titanium designs. Suppliers that can meet Euro 7 durability with lighter systems can earn a price premium.

Exhaust systems for hydrogen and gas engines

Hydrogen combustion engines still produce NOx and need SCR aftertreatment, and natural gas trucks need three-way catalysts. Exhaust makers that develop systems for these engines can win early programs in Europe, China and India.

Asia Pacific Holds the Largest Share While the Middle East Posts the Fastest Growth

Regional growth in the automotive exhaust systems market follows combustion and hybrid vehicle output, truck fleet growth and the pace of battery-electric adoption.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 43.60% share of the automotive exhaust systems market in 2025, worth USD 18.14 Billion, and APAC revenue reaches USD 21.79 Billion by 2035 at a 1.85% CAGR. India's car, truck and two-wheeler output keeps rising, and Tenneco Clean Air India holds 57% of the country's commercial truck clean-air business. China's battery-electric share limits growth in car exhausts.

North America

North America accounted for a 22.10% share in 2025, or USD 9.19 Billion, and North American revenue is expected to reach USD 10.26 Billion in 2035, a 1.10% CAGR. US electric car share stayed just under 10% in 2025, pickups and SUVs dominate sales, and the EPA's 2027 truck NOx rule adds aftertreatment content to Class 8 trucks.

Europe

Europe held a 23.80% share in 2025, worth USD 9.90 Billion, and European revenue grows at 0.65% a year to USD 10.56 Billion by 2035, the slowest regional rate. Battery-electric cars took 17.4% of EU registrations in 2025, but Euro 7 from November 2026 raises the value of each remaining exhaust system. FORVIA, Eberspaecher and Boysen are major suppliers.

Latin America

Latin America took a 5.30% share in 2025, or USD 2.20 Billion, and the Latin American market grows at a 1.70% CAGR to USD 2.61 Billion in 2035. Brazil's PROCONVE emission phases and Mexico's export vehicle plants support OEM demand, while older fleets keep muffler and pipe replacement strong.

Middle East

The Middle East held a 2.90% share in 2025, worth USD 1.21 Billion, and Middle East revenue grows at 2.35% a year, the fastest regional rate, to USD 1.52 Billion in 2035. Low fuel prices, a growing truck fleet in Saudi Arabia and slow electric vehicle uptake support exhaust demand.

Africa

Africa accounted for a 2.30% share in 2025, or USD 0.96 Billion, and African revenue reaches USD 1.18 Billion by 2035 at a 2.10% CAGR. Imported used vehicles in Nigeria and Kenya need frequent exhaust repairs, and South Africa's assembly plants buy OEM systems.

Primary Interview Insights

OEM sourcing

How is Euro 7 changing exhaust specifications?

Purchasing managers told us that longer durability targets are pushing them toward higher grade stainless steel and better insulated catalyst housings. Several said exhaust content per car will rise even though volumes in Europe stay flat.

Commercial vehicles

How are truck makers preparing for the US 2027 rule?

Truck engineers said they are still designing to the original NOx limits because the EPA proposal keeps them. The main open question is warranty length, which affects how robust and costly the aftertreatment hardware must be.

Hybrids

Do hybrids need different exhaust systems?

Suppliers said hybrid exhausts must handle more frequent cold starts, so they often need close-coupled catalysts and heat management. This adds value compared with a basic gasoline system.

Aftermarket

What drives exhaust replacement demand?

Distributors told us corrosion is the main cause, especially in regions that salt roads in winter. They see more demand for direct-fit stainless systems that last longer than aluminized parts.

Raw materials

How do steel prices affect suppliers?

Suppliers said nickel and chromium price swings hit margins because OEM contracts pass through costs only partly and with a delay. Some are adding indexation clauses to new contracts.
