Hybrid Engines and Heavy Trucks Keep Crankshaft Demand Growing Even as Battery Cars Gain Share

Global spending on automotive crankshafts reached USD 7.85 Billion in 2025, rises to USD 8.01 Billion in 2026 and should hit USD 9.66 Billion by 2035, a 2.10% CAGR. Volume holds up because every hybrid, range extender and truck engine still needs one.

The automotive crankshafts market covers the forged steel, cast ductile iron and billet steel shafts that convert piston motion into rotation in road-vehicle engines: passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, medium and heavy trucks, buses and two-wheelers. Radial Insights counts finished, machined crankshafts sold to engine plants and replacement crankshafts sold through the aftermarket. Raw forgings sold between forging shops, marine and stationary generator engines, off-highway equipment engines and compressor shafts are excluded.

The backdrop is mixed. OICA counted 96.4 million vehicles built worldwide in 2025, up 3.9%, while the IEA reports that electric cars passed 20 million units and 25% of new car sales in the same year. Battery electric vehicles carry no crankshaft, yet 35% of electric car sales were plug-in hybrids and range extenders, which keep one. Full hybrids, CNG trucks and the next round of diesel truck engines add further demand for precision shafts.

Hybrid powertrains form the fastest growing segment at a 6.80% CAGR through 2035, well ahead of gasoline engines at 0.40%. Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest and the fastest growing region at 2.68% a year, carried by China's 34.53 million vehicles built in 2025 and India's 6.49 million. Europe is the slowest region at 0.90% because its car fleet electrifies first.

Pricing also matters. A heavy-duty six-cylinder crankshaft can weigh well over 100 kg and sells for many times the price of a small car shaft, so the shift of forging capacity toward truck and large-bore work lifts value faster than unit counts. Indian forgers such as Bharat Forge, Happy Forgings and MM Forgings are adding heavy press lines for exactly this reason.

Forged Steel Leads on Strength, Billet Steel Grows Fastest from a Small Base

Forged steel is the standard material for diesel, turbocharged gasoline and hybrid engines because it tolerates higher firing pressures; it grows at 2.60%. Cast ductile iron, used in low-cost naturally aspirated engines, grows at only 1.20% as those engines lose share in China and Europe. Billet steel crankshafts, machined from solid bar for racing and performance rebuilds, post a 3.30% CAGR. Callies launched a forged 4340 crankshaft for the Cummins 6.7L at the PRI show in December 2025, showing how performance buyers keep this niche active.

Heavy Commercial Vehicles Grow Fastest Among Vehicle Types

Medium and heavy commercial vehicles grow at 2.90% because battery trucks remain a small share of long-haul fleets and new emission rules bring redesigned engines. Two-wheelers follow at 2.80% on Indian and ASEAN motorcycle output. Light commercial vehicles grow at 2.20%. Passenger cars, still the largest unit pool, grow at 1.50% as battery cars take share in China and Europe.

Hybrids Drive the Powertrain Mix

Hybrid engines (HEV, PHEV and EREV) grow at 6.80%. China's range-extender boom and Toyota-style full hybrids keep engine counts high in electrified vehicles. Alternative fuel engines running on CNG, LNG or hydrogen grow at 4.90%, helped by Indian CNG cars and Chinese LNG trucks. Diesel shafts grow at 1.20%, and gasoline-only shafts at 0.40%.

Inline Six-Cylinder Shafts Gain on Truck Demand

Inline six-cylinder crankshafts, typical of 10 to 15 liter truck engines, grow at 2.60%. Inline four-cylinder and smaller shafts, the bulk of car and hybrid volume, grow at 1.90%. V-type and other configurations grow at 1.40% as V8 pickups and premium V6 engines face downsizing.

Aftermarket Outpaces OEM Supply

The aftermarket grows at 3.10% against 1.90% for OEM supply. An aging global fleet, engine rebuild work on trucks and buses, and performance upgrades all support replacement crankshafts.

Market Trends

Indian Forgers Add Heavy Press Capacity for Export Crankshafts

In January 2025 the Happy Forgings board approved about Rs 650 crore for heavyweight forged and machined parts of up to 3,000 kg, including crankshafts. In March 2026 MM Forgings set FY27 capex of INR 1.6 to 2.0 billion to lift forging capacity to 150,000 tonnes; its new 16,500-tonne press line will mainly make crankshafts and heavy front axle beams for export, with about Rs 300 crore of revenue potential.

Chinese Large-Bore Shafts Grow Faster Than Car Shafts

Tianrun Industry, one of China's largest crankshaft makers, reported 2025 revenue of RMB 4.07 billion, up 12.55%, in March 2026. Its large-bore crankshaft and connecting rod revenue jumped 53% to RMB 410 million, showing the margin shift toward heavy and large engines.

Europe Softens Its 2035 Combustion Phase-Out

In December 2025 the European Commission's Automotive Package proposed cutting the 2035 car and van CO2 target from 100% to 90%, with the remaining 10% offset by low-carbon steel or renewable fuels. This keeps a legal path for plug-in hybrids and range extenders after 2035 and lengthens the tail of European crankshaft demand.

New Truck Engines Arrive for US 2027 Rules

In July 2026 Cummins announced a phased launch plan for its model year 2027 truck engines, led by the X15 and X10. EPA's July 2026 proposal kept the 0.035 g/bhp-hr NOx standard, so new engine platforms, and new crankshaft part numbers, are still coming.

Restraints and Challenges

Battery Electric Cars Remove the Part Entirely

Electric cars topped 20 million sales and 25% of new car sales in 2025, and battery models made up 65% of that total. Each battery car replaces an engine that would have used a crankshaft. Even suppliers say so: CIE Automotive India's February 2026 investor deck lists "dependency on crankshafts to be redundant in EVs" as a business risk (CIE Automotive India investor presentation).

European Policy Remains Unsettled

The EU 2035 target remains under negotiation after the Commission proposal (European Commission Automotive Package). Forgers find it hard to justify new car-shaft lines when the volume after 2030 depends on a legislative vote, and European production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million vehicles in 2025.

Truck Cycles Hit Order Books

Sypris reported in March 2026 that its Technologies segment fell to USD 51.7 million from USD 75.2 million on the commercial vehicle downturn. Europe built 435.6 thousand medium and heavy commercial vehicles in 2025, down 1.6%, according to CIE's deck. Swings of this size make heavy-shaft capacity planning difficult.

Energy and Steel Costs Squeeze Forging Margins

Forging is energy intensive and alloy steel prices move with scrap and nickel markets. MAHLE's 2025 sales fell to EUR 11.257 billion from EUR 11.681 billion, a reminder that European engine suppliers face both cost pressure and falling volumes.

Growth Drivers

Hybrid and Range-Extender Output Keeps Engines in Electrified Cars

China produced 16.626 million new energy vehicles in 2025, according to CAAM, and a large share were plug-in hybrids and range-extender models that still carry a gasoline engine. The IEA says 35% of global electric car sales in 2025 were plug-in hybrids including EREVs, roughly 7 million vehicles with a crankshaft. Toyota, BYD, Li Auto and Geely are all expanding dedicated hybrid engines with high thermal efficiency, which use forged shafts with tighter balance and surface finish tolerances. Hybrid engines also run more start-stop cycles, which raises fatigue requirements and average selling prices. Radial Insights estimates this driver adds about +1.2% of annual growth to the automotive crankshafts market across the forecast.

Heavy Truck Emission Rules Bring New Engine Platforms

The US EPA 2027 heavy-duty rule keeps a 0.035 g/bhp-hr NOx limit, Euro 7 also covers heavy-duty engines, and India and China continue to tighten truck norms. Cummins has announced a phased launch of new X15 and X10 engines, and Daimler Truck, Volvo and PACCAR are readying their own platforms. Each new engine generation brings new crankshaft tooling, validation and higher-strength micro-alloyed steels. ACT recorded 42,700 Class 8 orders in December 2025, the only positive year-on-year month that year, as an early pre-buy began. Bharat Forge said its FY26 revenue of Rs 16,812 crore benefited from the North American truck recovery. We estimate the truck engine cycle contributes roughly +0.6% a year to market CAGR.

Asian Vehicle Output and an Older Global Fleet

OICA counted 96.4 million vehicles built in 2025: China 34.53 million, Japan 8.41 million and India 6.49 million. India's FY26 domestic passenger vehicle sales grew 7.9% to 4.643 million and commercial vehicle sales 12.6% to 1.08 million, according to SIAM. At the same time the global fleet is aging, which sends more engines to rebuild shops that regrind or replace crankshafts. Happy Forgings reported FY26 revenue of Rs 1,546 crore, up 9.8%, with commercial vehicles at 37% of its mix. Together, Asian output and fleet aging lift annual growth by an estimated 0.5 percentage points.

Opportunities

Large-Bore and Export Work for Low-Cost Forgers

Western engine makers are moving heavy forging to India and China. MM Forgings' 16,500-tonne press and Happy Forgings' 3,000 kg capability target this export work, and Bharat Forge produced its millionth crankshaft for Daimler's heavy-duty engines years ago, giving it a proven qualification record.

Hydrogen and Gas Engines

Hydrogen combustion and LNG engines run at high cylinder pressures and need strong forged shafts. Cummins, MAN and Chinese truck makers are developing these engines, and early adopters will pay a premium for validated crankshafts.

Asia Pacific Supplies Over Half of Crankshaft Revenue While Europe Slows First

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 52.40% share of the automotive crankshafts market in 2025. APAC revenue of about USD 4,113 Million in 2025 is forecast to reach USD 5,359 Million by 2035, a 2.68% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, including 4.261 million commercial vehicles, and India built 6.49 million, while Tianrun, Bharat Forge and Happy Forgings expand capacity in the region.

North America

The US built 10.24 million vehicles in 2025, ACT recorded 42,700 Class 8 truck orders in December 2025, and V8 pickups, diesel heavy-duty pickups and Class 8 trucks keep high-value shafts in demand ahead of the 2027 NOx rule.

Europe

The European market represented 21.30% of global crankshaft revenue in 2025. European revenue moves from about USD 1,672 Million in 2025 to USD 1,829 Million by 2035, a 0.90% CAGR, the slowest of any region. Europe built 17.2 million vehicles in 2025, down 0.8%, and its car fleet electrifies first, though thyssenkrupp, Alfing Kessler and MAHLE still serve truck and hybrid engines.

Latin America

Latin America held a 4.80% share in 2025. Latin American revenue of about USD 377 Million grows to USD 468 Million by 2035 at a 2.20% CAGR. Brazil built 2.64 million vehicles in 2025, almost all with flex-fuel combustion engines, while the Americas as a whole produced 18.74 million vehicles, down 2.1%. Mexico's export engine plants keep Latin American combustion volumes steady across the decade.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 2.30% of 2025 revenue. Middle East sales of about USD 181 Million should reach USD 229 Million by 2035, a 2.40% CAGR. Demand comes mainly from aftermarket replacement in hot-climate truck and SUV fleets, and Saudi Arabia lists crankshafts among its targeted local manufacturing opportunities.

Africa

African buyers accounted for a 1.60% share in 2025. African revenue of about USD 126 Million rises to USD 161 Million by 2035, a 2.50% CAGR. New vehicle sales in Africa rose 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025, according to OICA. South Africa's engine and vehicle export plants and a large, older used-vehicle fleet support both OEM and rebuild demand in Africa.
