Camera Monitor Systems and Feature-Rich Mirror Heads Lift Side Mirror Value Faster Than Vehicle Output

Automotive side mirror revenue totaled USD 11.60 Billion in 2025 and climbs to USD 11.99 Billion in 2026 on its way to USD 16.21 Billion by 2035, a 3.40% CAGR, as every new car still needs two exterior vision devices.

Radial Insights defines the automotive side mirrors market as complete exterior rearview assemblies fitted to the doors or cab of road vehicles: housings, glass, actuators, heaters, folding mechanisms, turn and blind-spot indicators, and camera monitor systems (CMS) that replace the reflective glass with a camera and in-cab display. OEM supply to car, van, truck and bus makers and replacement units sold through the aftermarket are both counted. Interior rearview mirrors, standalone surround-view cameras, and loose mirror glass sold for repair outside complete assemblies are excluded.

Unit demand tracks light vehicle production, which S&P Global Mobility data quoted by Gentex put at 77.49 million units in 2025. Value grows faster than units because content per mirror keeps rising. Power-folding, heating, puddle lamps, auto-dimming glass and blind-spot indicators are now standard on mid-range models in China, Europe and North America, and Gentex alone ships roughly 4 million auto-dimming exterior mirrors every quarter.

Camera monitor systems are the fastest growing segment at a 14.80% CAGR. Heavy trucks lead adoption: Stoneridge has produced more than 150,000 MirrorEye systems for 10 truck brands. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the largest and fastest growing region at 4.00% a year, led by China, where 33.10 million light vehicles were built in 2025.

Regulation sets the pace for digital mirrors. UN Regulation 46 and China's GB 15084-2022 already allow cameras in place of exterior glass, while US light vehicles still need conventional mirrors under FMVSS 111 as NHTSA studies how drivers use camera systems.

Conventional Glass Leads Volume While Camera Systems Lead Growth

Conventional glass mirrors remain on most of the 77.49 million light vehicles built in 2025, which is why they grow close to vehicle output at 2.10%. Auto-dimming exterior mirrors grow at 4.60% as electrochromic glass spreads from luxury to mid-range trims; Gentex's exterior shipments rose 2% to 4.138 million units in the second quarter of 2026. Camera monitor systems grow at 14.80% on truck fitment in Europe and North America and on early car programs in China and Japan.

Blind-Spot Indicators Are the Fastest Growing Feature

Integrated blind-spot indicators grow at 5.30% because radar-based blind-spot warning needs a visible alert in the mirror head. Power-folding grows at 4.20% as compact parking spaces in Asian cities make it a buyer priority. Power-adjust and heated mirrors grow at 2.80%, while manual-adjust units grow at just 0.90% as entry trims add electric features.

Heavy Trucks and Buses Adopt Cameras First

Heavy trucks and buses grow at 6.20%, the highest vehicle-type rate, because camera mirrors cut drag, improve night vision and remove blind zones on long cabs. Stoneridge launched a next-generation MirrorEye for buses and rigid vehicles in Europe in July 2025. Light commercial vehicles grow at 3.30% and passenger cars at 3.10%.

Aftermarket Grows Slightly Faster Than OEM

The aftermarket grows at 3.70% against 3.30% for OEM supply. Side mirrors are among the most frequently damaged exterior parts in parking and lane-change incidents, and complex heads with heaters, indicators and sensors cost more to replace.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Truck Makers Commit to Camera Mirrors

In May 2026 Stoneridge reported a MirrorEye program with a fourth North American truck maker, part of two awards worth more than USD 135 million in lifetime revenue. In April 2026 it said first-quarter MirrorEye sales were a record and cumulative production had passed 150,000 systems across six programs and 10 truck brands.

Global Rules Make Room for Digital Mirrors

In November 2025 UNECE's WP.29 adopted the 07 series of amendments to UN Regulation 46 by 38 votes to 0, covering partially folded camera wings and multi-field-of-view devices, and the amendment entered into force in June 2026. In the United States, NHTSA published a research notice in May 2025 on drivers' use of camera-based rear visibility systems versus traditional mirrors, a step toward deciding on FMVSS 111 petitions.

China Leads Digital Mirror Installations

In February 2026 Gasgoo reported more than 1 million digital rearview mirror installations in China's passenger car OEM market in 2025, with supplier Foryou reporting OEM installations up nearly 400%. Most of these were interior streaming mirrors, but the supply base and the GB 15084-2022 standard prepare China for exterior camera mirrors.

Mirror Suppliers Broaden Into Electronics

Gentex completed its acquisition of VOXX International in April 2025, adding consumer and aftermarket electronics to its mirror business, and its consolidated net sales rose 15% to USD 657.9 million in the second quarter of 2025. Suppliers are packing more cameras, lighting and sensors into each mirror head.

Restraints and Challenges

US Rules Still Require Glass Mirrors on Cars

FMVSS 111 does not yet allow camera systems to replace required mirrors on US light vehicles. NHTSA's May 2025 notice (Federal Register, NHTSA-2025-0021) shows the agency is still collecting driver behavior data from about 156 drivers a year, so the timing of any US approval remains uncertain.

Flat Vehicle Production

Light vehicle production quoted by Gentex is forecast to slip from 77.49 million units in 2025 to 75.49 million in 2026, a 3% decline, with China expected to drop from 33.10 million to 31.58 million. Mirror volumes follow vehicle builds closely.

Price Pressure From Car Makers

Gentex reported second-quarter 2026 net sales down 1% to USD 651.3 million, with total auto-dimming mirror shipments down 10% to 10.416 million units (Gentex Q2 2026 release). Chinese car makers push suppliers hard on price and often source from domestic mirror makers.

Camera Systems Add Cost and Validation Work

A camera monitor system needs cameras, displays, heaters and software that meet functional safety rules, which costs several times more than a glass mirror. Truck fleets accept the price for fuel and safety gains, but car buyers have been slower to pay for it.

Growth Drivers

Camera Monitor Systems on Heavy Trucks

Truck makers adopt camera mirrors because removing large mirror arms cuts aerodynamic drag, shows trailer ends while turning, and gives clearer night vision. Stoneridge expects 2026 MirrorEye revenue of at least USD 160 million, about 45% above 2025, and its Q3 2025 report showed MirrorEye sales up 78% year to date. Daimler Truck North America offers MirrorCam, based on MirrorEye, on the fifth-generation Freightliner Cascadia, and Mekra Lang and Continental supply European truck makers. Each camera system sells for several times the value of the glass mirrors it replaces. Radial Insights estimates heavy-vehicle CMS adoption adds about +1.1% of annual growth to the automotive side mirrors market through 2035.

Rising Electronic Content per Mirror

Side mirrors now carry heaters, power-fold motors, puddle and turn lamps, blind-spot icons, auto-dimming glass and sometimes surround-view cameras. Gentex shipped 44.8 million auto-dimming mirrors in 2025, with exterior units running at about 4 million per quarter. Euro NCAP and C-NCAP ratings reward blind-spot and lane-change assistance, and the alert usually sits in the mirror glass. Samvardhana Motherson, the largest mirror supplier, earns about 15% of group revenue from vision systems and supplies mirrors from 39 facilities in 17 countries. We estimate richer content per mirror contributes roughly +0.9% a year to market CAGR.

Vehicle Output in Asia and Wider Digital Mirror Rules

China built 33.10 million light vehicles in 2025, Japan and Korea 12.07 million, and India 6.49 million vehicles of all types according to OICA. Chinese brands adopt new features quickly, and more than 1 million digital rearview mirrors were installed in Chinese cars in 2025. UN R46's 07 series, in force since June 2026, eases approval of camera wings for car makers selling in 50-plus countries that apply UN rules. Together, Asian output and the regulatory opening lift growth by an estimated 0.6 percentage points a year.

Opportunities

Camera Mirrors for Electric Cars

Electric car makers fight for every kilometer of range, and slim camera wings reduce drag. Once US rules allow them, premium EV brands are likely to offer camera mirrors as options, opening a high-value OEM segment.

Aftermarket Retrofit for Fleets

Bus and truck fleets with older vehicles can retrofit camera systems to cut blind-spot collisions. Stoneridge's July 2025 European launch for buses and rigid vehicles targets this demand, and insurers increasingly reward fleets that fit such systems.

Asia Pacific Produces Nearly Half of Side Mirror Revenue and Leads Growth on China's Feature Race

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 48.60% share of the automotive side mirrors market in 2025. APAC revenue of about USD 5,638 Million in 2025 is forecast to reach USD 8,345 Million by 2035, a 4.00% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China built 33.10 million light vehicles in 2025 and Japan and Korea built 12.07 million, while Murakami, Tokai Rika, SL Corporation and Foryou serve the region's car makers.

North America

Light vehicle output in Europe was 17.05 million units in 2025, and Europe leads truck camera mirror fitment under UN R46 with suppliers Mekra Lang, Ficosa, Magna and Motherson's SMR.

Latin America

Latin America held a 4.60% share in 2025. Latin American revenue of about USD 534 Million grows to USD 731 Million by 2035, a 3.20% CAGR. Brazil built 2.64 million vehicles in 2025, and Motherson and Magna run mirror plants in Brazil and Mexico for regional and export programs.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 2.10% of 2025 revenue. Middle East sales of about USD 244 Million should reach USD 344 Million by 2035, a 3.50% CAGR. Demand comes mostly from imported vehicles and aftermarket replacement, and Saudi Arabia's new vehicle assembly plants, including Lucid's King Abdullah Economic City site, add local OEM demand.

Africa

African buyers accounted for a 1.50% share in 2025. African revenue of about USD 174 Million rises to USD 250 Million by 2035, a 3.70% CAGR. New vehicle sales in Africa rose 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025, according to OICA, and South Africa and Morocco host export car plants that buy mirrors from local suppliers.

Motherson, Magna and Gentex Anchor a Concentrated Mirror Supply Base as Camera Specialists Gain Ground

The automotive side mirrors market is concentrated at the assembly level. Samvardhana Motherson, Magna and Ficosa build most complete exterior mirrors for global car makers, while Gentex dominates auto-dimming glass and Stoneridge and Mekra Lang lead truck camera systems. We estimate the top five suppliers hold about 60% of OEM revenue.

Global Mirror Assembly Leaders

Samvardhana Motherson, through SMR, is one of the largest producers of rearview vision systems, with 39 facilities in 17 countries; it bought Visiocorp in 2009, a majority of Nanchang JMCG Mekra Lang in 2021 and the mirror business of Valeo's Ichikoh in 2022. Magna International builds exterior mirrors and its ClearView camera mirror systems in North America and Europe. Ficosa, part of the Panasonic group, supplies European and Asian car makers with mirrors and camera monitor systems.

Glass and Electronics Specialists

Gentex is the main supplier of auto-dimming electrochromic mirrors and shipped 44.8 million auto-dimming units in 2025. Murakami Corporation and Tokai Rika serve Japanese car makers, and SL Corporation serves Hyundai and Kia. Flabeg supplies mirror glass to European assemblers.

Camera Monitor System Leaders

Stoneridge leads truck camera mirrors with MirrorEye, which supports six programs across 10 truck brands. Mekra Lang has long supplied truck mirrors and camera systems in Europe. Continental develops camera monitor systems for trucks and buses.

Chinese Digital Mirror Suppliers

Foryou Corporation reported OEM digital rearview mirror installations up nearly 400% in 2025, showing how quickly Chinese electronics suppliers can scale. These companies are likely to compete for exterior camera mirror programs as Chinese brands adopt them.

How Suppliers Compete

Mirror programs are awarded per vehicle platform and usually run five to seven years, so winning a high-volume platform locks in revenue for most of a decade. Suppliers compete on weight, wind noise, folding speed and the ability to integrate cameras, lamps and radar alerts in a compact head. Global scale matters because car makers want the same mirror built near each assembly plant, which favors Motherson, Magna and Ficosa. Camera system suppliers compete on image latency, display quality, cybersecurity and functional safety approval, where Stoneridge's 150,000-unit field record gives it an edge over new entrants.
