SUV demand in Asia and panoramic glass roofs push sunroof revenue toward USD 19.66 Billion by 2035

Radial Insights sizes the Automotive Sunroofs market at USD 10.62 Billion in 2025, with USD 11.29 Billion expected in 2026 and USD 19.66 Billion by 2035, implying a 6.35% CAGR as buyers in India, China and the Gulf treat an opening glass roof as a standard feature rather than a luxury.

The study covers roof opening and glass roof systems supplied for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles: openable panoramic sunroofs, fixed panoramic glass roofs, built-in sliding sunroofs, spoiler (tilt-and-slide) sunroofs and pop-up units, together with their frames, drive mechanisms, glass panels and integrated shading. Revenue is counted at the system level for OEM fitment plus aftermarket replacement and retrofit. We exclude convertible soft tops and folding hardtops, flat roof glass sold to buses and rail, and stand-alone glass repair services.

Demand follows the global shift to SUVs and crossovers, which carry larger roof areas and are the main platform for panoramic designs. Webasto, the largest roof system supplier, reported group revenue of EUR 4.0 billion for 2025, of which roof systems generated about EUR 3.0 billion, or 79% of sales. In India, Hyundai Motor India said more than 52% of its 2024 domestic sales included a sunroof, rising to 54% in the first half of 2025.

Switchable smart glass roofs, which darken on command, are the fastest-growing segment at a 13.40% CAGR, and openable panoramic sunroofs lead the product types at 7.90%. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the largest region with 52.40% of 2025 revenue and also the fastest-growing major region at 7.30% a year.

Supplier finances are the weak point in the Automotive Sunroofs market. Webasto entered a restructuring in 2025, cut up to 300 administrative jobs in Germany and still reported EBIT adjusted for one-time effects of EUR 51 million, against EUR 63 million in 2024. Price pressure from Chinese automakers and lower European volumes keep margins thin even as unit demand rises.

Openable panoramic sunroofs lead product growth at 7.90%

Openable panoramic sunroofs combine a front sliding panel with a fixed rear panel and are now offered on compact SUVs in India and China, not just premium cars. They grow at 7.90% a year. Fixed panoramic glass roofs, common on electric vehicles where engineers save height and weight by removing the mechanism, grow 7.10%. Built-in sliding sunroofs, the classic single-panel design, grow 4.20%, while spoiler sunroofs grow 3.60% and pop-up units, mostly aftermarket and entry vehicles, grow only 1.80%.

Laminated glass outpaces tempered glass as safety and acoustic needs rise

Laminated glass holds together when broken and gives better sound insulation, so automakers increasingly specify it for large roofs; it grows 7.20%. Tempered glass, cheaper and still widely used, grows 5.60%. Polycarbonate panels, lighter than glass and suited to complex shapes, grow 6.90% from a small base. Fabric folding roofs grow 2.10%, limited to a few city cars and off-road models.

Switchable smart glass is the fastest segment at 13.40%

Switchable glazing based on PDLC, SPD or electrochromic films lets passengers darken all or part of the roof with a button, and it removes the need for a bulky roller blind. Webasto showed segment-by-segment switchable glazing in panoramic roofs and has been promoting it to automakers since 2023. This segment grows 13.40% a year. Integrated interlayer shades, such as Webasto's Smart Integrated Glazing launched in April 2026, which slides a shade between two glass layers, grow 10.80%. Conventional roller blinds still fit most roofs and grow 5.20%.

SUVs and MUVs grow fastest by vehicle type at 7.10%

SUVs and MUVs carry the largest roof areas and are the main platform for panoramic designs, so they grow 7.10%. Hatchbacks grow 6.40% because Indian brands now fit sunroofs to compact hatchbacks such as the Hyundai i20 and Grand i10 NIOS. Sedans grow 4.30% as their share of new sales shrinks, and light commercial vehicles grow 2.80%, mostly from crew-cab pickups.

OEM fitment grows at 6.50% while aftermarket replacement grows 3.10%

Almost all sunroofs today are fitted on the assembly line, and OEM revenue grows 6.50%. The aftermarket, which covers glass replacement, drain and seal repair and some retrofits, grows 3.10%; retrofits are declining because factory sunroofs are now cheap and widely available.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Sunroofs have become a mass-market feature in India

In July 2025 Hyundai Motor India said it had sold more than 1.1 million sunroof-equipped vehicles over five years. Over 52% of its 2024 domestic sales had a sunroof, rising to 54% in the first half of 2025, and sunroofs are available on 12 of its 14 models. This shift from luxury to standard trim has made India one of the most important growth markets for roof system suppliers.

Suppliers are adding capacity close to Indian assembly plants

In February 2026 Webasto announced its third production plant in India, located between Manesar and Kharkhoda near Delhi, with capacity of about 500,000 units a year and a start of production in Q4 2026. Total Indian capacity will reach 2 million roofs a year. Webasto has invested more than EUR 110 million in India since 2019 and plans a total of EUR 174 million by 2030.

Shading is moving into the glass

In April 2026 Webasto launched Smart Integrated Glazing (SIG), which places the sunshade inside a double-glazed unit so that it slides between the glass layers. The design reduces roof thickness, which helps electric vehicles meet height targets and gives more rear headroom, and it blocks solar heat physically. Combined with switchable glazing and starlight-style ambient lighting, it points to roofs that act as a comfort and design feature rather than only an opening.

Restructuring is reshaping the supplier base

In March 2025 Webasto appointed Joerg Buchheim as CEO and Johann Stohner as Chief Restructuring Officer, and in October 2025 the company said it would cut up to 300 leadership roles in administrative departments at Stockdorf and Gilching by the end of 2025. Financing has been secured through 2028. These steps show how the leading supplier is adjusting costs while volume shifts from Europe to Asia.

Restraints and Challenges

Thin supplier margins limit investment

Webasto's 2025 results, published in its financial press release, show revenue down 7.4% to EUR 4.0 billion and adjusted EBIT of EUR 51 million, down from EUR 63 million. When the global leader earns low single-digit margins, smaller roof suppliers have even less room to fund new tooling, smart glass development and plants in growth markets.

Glass breakage and leak complaints raise warranty costs

Large glass roofs have drawn owner complaints about panels that shatter without impact, as well as leaks from blocked drains and worn seals. Each warranty claim on a big panoramic panel is expensive, because the glass, seals and sometimes the headliner must be replaced. Automakers are responding with laminated glass and tighter testing, which adds cost per roof.

Electric vehicle packaging pushes toward fixed glass

Battery-electric models need low roof heights for aerodynamics and space for batteries under the floor, so many use a fixed glass roof without an opening mechanism. A fixed panel generates less revenue per vehicle than an openable system with motors, rails and a blind. As BEVs gain share in China and Europe, part of the market moves to lower-value fixed glass sourced from glass makers rather than roof system suppliers.

Cabin heat in hot climates

Large glass areas raise cabin temperatures, which increases air-conditioning load and cuts electric range. Buyers in India and the Middle East value sunroofs but also complain about heat. Suppliers need infrared-reflective coatings, darker glass or better shades, all of which add cost and can slow adoption in price-sensitive models.

Growth Drivers

Sunroofs are moving into mid-range and compact models in Asia

The most important driver is the spread of sunroofs from premium cars into volume models in India and China. Hyundai Motor India reported that 54% of its domestic sales in the first half of 2025 had a sunroof, up from 52% in 2024, and that sunroofs are offered on 12 of 14 models, including small hatchbacks. Tata Motors, Mahindra, Kia and Maruti Suzuki have followed with sunroofs on compact SUVs. India produced 6.49 million vehicles in 2025 according to OICA, and China built 34.53 million. Webasto's plan to lift Indian capacity to 2 million roofs a year shows how suppliers read this demand. Radial Insights estimates that wider fitment in Asian volume models adds about +2.1% of annual growth to the market through 2035, the largest single contribution.

The global shift to SUVs enlarges roof area and system value

SUVs and crossovers have longer, wider roofs than sedans and hatchbacks, which makes panoramic sunroofs practical. A two-panel panoramic system with a front sliding panel, rear fixed panel, motors and roller blind costs several times as much as a small single-panel sunroof. OICA reported 96.4 million vehicles produced worldwide in 2025, up 3.9%, and SUV body styles took a growing share of that output in China, India, the US and Europe. Brands such as Toyota, Hyundai, Kia and BYD now offer panoramic roofs on mid-size SUVs. We estimate the SUV mix shift and the upgrade to larger panoramic systems contribute roughly +1.4 percentage points to yearly growth, and they explain why openable panoramic sunroofs grow at 7.90%.

Smart glass and integrated shading raise content per roof

Switchable glazing, integrated interlayer shades, ambient lighting and solar cells add electronics and higher-value glass to each roof. Webasto's April 2026 Smart Integrated Glazing and its switchable glazing that can darken individual roof segments are examples. Research Frontiers licenses SPD-SmartGlass, used in Mercedes-Benz Magic Sky Control roofs, and glass makers such as AGC and Saint-Gobain Sekurit supply coated and switchable laminates. Each of these features can add significant value per vehicle. Radial Insights credits higher-content glazing with close to +0.9% of annual market expansion, and it is why switchable smart glass grows at 13.40%, the highest rate in the study.

Opportunities

Local roof production in India and Southeast Asia

With Indian brands fitting sunroofs across many trims, suppliers that build complete systems close to Pune, Chennai and the Delhi region can cut logistics cost and lead times. Webasto's third Indian plant, opening in Q4 2026, shows the scale of opportunity, and Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese assembly offers a second wave.

Heat-rejecting and lightweight roof glass for electric vehicles

Electric vehicles need roofs that block solar heat to protect range and that save weight. Laminated glass with infrared coatings, thinner glass and polycarbonate panels give glass makers and roof suppliers room to sell higher-value products to BEV makers in China and Europe.

Asia Pacific (APAC) generates more than half of sunroof revenue and adds the most value through 2035

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 52.40% of the market in 2025, worth USD 5.56 Billion, and reaches USD 11.26 Billion by 2035 at a 7.30% CAGR. Asia Pacific built about 59.2 million vehicles in 2025, per OICA, and in India more than half of Hyundai's domestic sales now carry a sunroof. Webasto's planned 2 million roofs a year of Indian capacity supports APAC growth.

Europe

Europe held 20.80% of revenue in 2025, worth USD 2.21 Billion, and reaches USD 3.55 Billion by 2035, growing at 4.85% a year. European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025, but premium German and Swedish brands fit panoramic and switchable glass roofs at high rates, keeping value per vehicle high in Europe.

North America

North America represented 18.60% of 2025 revenue, about USD 1.98 Billion, and reaches USD 3.25 Billion by 2035 at a 5.10% CAGR. North American buyers favor large SUVs and pickups, many with panoramic roofs, and the Americas produced 18.74 million vehicles in 2025.

Latin America

Latin America had a 4.30% share in 2025, worth USD 0.46 Billion, rising to USD 0.84 Billion by 2035 at 6.30% a year. Compact SUVs built in Brazil and Mexico are adding sunroofs in upper trims, and Latin American buyers increasingly treat them as a status feature.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 2.40% of revenue in 2025, worth USD 0.25 Billion, and reaches USD 0.50 Billion by 2035 at a 6.90% CAGR. Large SUVs dominate Gulf sales, and Middle East buyers prefer tinted laminated glass and strong shading because of heat.

Africa

Africa held 1.50% of the market in 2025, worth USD 0.16 Billion, growing to USD 0.32 Billion by 2035 at 7.20% a year. African vehicle sales rose 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025, and South Africa and Morocco are the main assembly hubs serving Africa.

One European leader and a few Asian and US system suppliers dominate roof systems, while glass makers capture more value

The Automotive Sunroofs market is concentrated among a small group of roof system integrators that design mechanisms, frames and controls, and a second group of glass makers that supply panels and switchable laminates. As fixed glass roofs and smart glass spread, glass suppliers gain a larger share of value.

Global roof system integrators

Webasto is the world's largest roof system supplier, with roof revenue of about EUR 3.0 billion in 2025 and plants in Europe, the Americas, China and India; it is known for panoramic roofs, solar roofs and switchable glazing. Inalfa Roof Systems, based in the Netherlands and owned by BAIC, supplies sunroofs and panoramic roofs to global automakers from plants in Europe, North America and Asia. Inteva Products, headquartered in Michigan, makes roof systems along with closures and interiors for North American and European brands.

Japanese suppliers tied to domestic automakers

Aisin Corporation produces sunroofs for Toyota and other Japanese brands as part of its body products business. Yachiyo Industry has a long history of sunroof production for Honda models. These suppliers benefit from long-term relationships but face competition as Japanese brands source more roofs from global integrators in China and India.

Glass makers and smart glass technology providers

Fuyao Glass Industry Group is the largest Chinese automotive glass maker and supplies panoramic roof glass to Chinese and global brands. AGC Inc. and Saint-Gobain Sekurit supply laminated, tinted and switchable roof glass, and Nippon Sheet Glass, through its Pilkington brand, supplies roof glazing in Europe and Asia. Research Frontiers licenses SPD-SmartGlass technology used in dimmable roofs such as Mercedes-Benz Magic Sky Control.

Competitive themes

Competition centers on cost per roof, local production near fast-growing assembly hubs, and the ability to integrate shading, lighting and sensors into the glass. Webasto's restructuring and its India expansion show the balance suppliers must strike: cut fixed costs in Europe while adding capacity in Asia, where more than half of market revenue now sits.
