Pre-Adjusted and Aluminum Hubs Are Taking Share as Truck Makers Chase Weight and Uptime

Radial Insights values the commercial vehicle wheel hubs market at USD 2.74 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 2.86 Billion in 2026 and USD 4.21 Billion by 2035 at a 4.38% CAGR. Demand follows truck, bus and trailer output, but value per vehicle is climbing as fleets specify pre-adjusted, lighter and longer-life wheel ends.

The study covers wheel hubs and hub assemblies fitted to light commercial vehicles, medium and heavy trucks, buses, coaches and trailers, sold to original equipment makers and in the replacement market. It includes conventional adjustable hubs, pre-adjusted hub systems such as ConMet's PreSet, integrated hub-bearing units and hubs with built-in electric drive motors. Brake drums, rotors, wheels, standalone bearings and seals sold separately are excluded, as are passenger car hub units.

Truck markets were mixed in 2025. ACEA reported 307,460 new truck registrations in the European Union, down 6.2%, while China's heavy truck sales rose about 26% to roughly 1.14 million units including a record 330,000 exports, and India sold a record 1.08 million commercial vehicles in fiscal 2025-26. North America remained soft, with ACT Research counting 19,172 Class 8 net orders in September 2026, 7% lower than a year earlier.

Electric drive hubs are the fastest-growing segment at 14.80% a year from a small base, and aluminum hubs grow at 6.15% as fleets cut weight. Africa is the fastest-growing region at 5.55%, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds the largest share at 41.60% in 2025.

The commercial vehicle wheel hubs market is also supported by a large replacement base. ConMet says more than 40 million of its PreSet hubs have been installed since 1995 and that about 2 million hubs need replacing each year in its installed base alone, which keeps aftermarket demand steady through truck cycles.

Pre-Adjusted Hubs Lead the Shift Away From Manual Bearing Setting

Conventional adjustable hubs require a technician to set bearing endplay by hand, and errors cause premature wheel-end failures. This segment grows at only 2.10% a year as fleets move away from it. Pre-adjusted hubs, pioneered by ConMet's PreSet in 1995, grow at 5.20% because they remove the setting step, and Webb Wheel, Hendrickson and others now offer competing systems. Integrated hub-bearing units grow at 4.95%, driven by European trailers and light commercial vehicles. Electric drive hubs, such as ConMet's eHub family shown at ACT Expo in April 2025, grow at 14.80% from a very small base.

Aluminum Gains on Iron as Weight Rules Tighten

Ductile iron remains the default material for heavy axles and grows at 3.40%. Aluminum hubs grow at 6.15% because each kilogram saved adds payload or range for battery-electric trucks. Forged steel, used mainly on severe-duty and some light commercial applications, grows at 3.70%. ConMet promoted aluminum PreSet Plus hub assemblies at ACT Expo 2025 and a lightweight aluminum hub at JSAE in Yokohama in May 2026.

Buses and Light Commercial Vehicles Outgrow Heavy Trucks

Heavy-duty trucks remain the largest vehicle group but grow at 3.95% because North American and European truck demand is cyclical and flat. Buses and coaches grow at 4.90%, supported by a 7.5% rise in EU bus registrations in 2025 and city fleet electrification. Light commercial vehicles grow at 4.75% with e-commerce delivery growth. Trailers grow at 4.60% and medium-duty trucks at 4.05%.

Trailer Axles Grow Fastest Among Axle Positions

Steer axle hubs grow at 4.10% and drive axle hubs at 4.25%. Trailer axle hubs grow at 4.65% because trailers outnumber tractors in most fleets, and integrated wheel ends from BPW, SAF-Holland and Hendrickson are standard on new trailers.

Aftermarket Demand Outpaces New Fitment

OEM fitment grows at 4.05%, tied to vehicle production. The aftermarket grows faster at 4.85% because the installed base of trucks keeps aging and hubs are replaced after seal failures, bearing damage or brake work. ConMet estimates about 2 million replacements a year in its own installed base.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Wheel-End Suppliers Are Preparing for Electrified Axles

In April 2025, ConMet showed its eHub 10, 80 and 170 in-wheel electric motors at ACT Expo alongside aluminum PreSet Plus hubs. These products combine hub, bearing and motor in one unit and point to a future where some hub value shifts into electric drive modules, especially for refuse trucks, buses and trailers with regenerative axles.

Lightweight Trailer Wheel Ends Are Being Redesigned

In September 2026, BPW presented its Wheelend ECO Pro at IAA Transportation, a new wheel end for Europe's 9-tonne trailer axle with a patent-pending "bionic" hub and disc that saves about 20 kg per axle. Small-scale production starts in 2027, which shows how European trailer suppliers are using hub design to meet CO2 and payload goals.

Aftermarket Positioning Gets Sharper

In March 2026, ConMet used the TMC annual meeting in Nashville to launch "Reliability in Replacement" messaging aimed at fleets that replace hubs with lower-cost alternatives. In October 2026, The Hub Corporation launched a filtered hub cap for the North American aftermarket. Suppliers are targeting the replacement cycle more directly as OE volumes soften.

Industry Rebranding and Consolidation

In May 2025, Cummins renamed its Meritor business Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems while keeping the Meritor brand in the aftermarket. SAF-Holland is integrating Haldex, and Webb Wheel absorbed Stemco's pre-adjusted hub line. Fewer, larger suppliers now offer complete wheel-end packages of hub, drum or rotor, bearing and seal.

Restraints and Challenges

Weak North American and European Truck Builds

ACT Research reported 19,172 North American Class 8 net orders in September 2026, down 7% year on year, citing regulatory uncertainty. EU truck registrations fell 6.2% in 2025. SAF-Holland's 2025 sales fell 7.6% to EUR 1,734.4 million because of weak OE demand in the Americas. Soft builds directly reduce OE hub volumes.

Wheel-End Defects Raise Liability and Inspection Pressure

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's 2026 International Roadcheck results show 10,350 of 54,575 inspected vehicles placed out of service, with brake-related violations making up 39.1% of vehicle out-of-service violations. Wheel-end problems drive warranty claims and push buyers to demand proven designs, which lengthens approval cycles for new suppliers.

Regulatory Uncertainty in the United States

In February 2026, the US EPA rescinded the 2009 Endangerment Finding that underpins federal vehicle greenhouse gas standards, and the Phase 3 truck CO2 rule is expected to be scaled back. Weaker pressure on fuel efficiency reduces the incentive for fleets to pay extra for aluminum hubs in North America.

Low-Cost Imports in the Replacement Market

Imported hubs from Asian foundries compete on price in the aftermarket, especially for older trucks. Fleets that buy on price alone may accept shorter service life, which pressures margins for premium North American and European suppliers.

Growth Drivers

Fleet Uptime Goals Favor Pre-Adjusted Hub Systems

Incorrect bearing adjustment is a leading cause of wheel-end failure, and every roadside breakdown costs fleets towing, downtime and possible inspection penalties. CVSA's April 2026 Brake Safety Day put 574 of 4,021 inspected vehicles out of service for brakes, or 14.3%, and the August 2026 Roadcheck found 5,451 brake-related violations. Pre-adjusted hubs remove the manual setting step. ConMet says over 40 million PreSet hubs have been installed since 1995 and that they have logged about 31 trillion miles. Hendrickson, Webb Wheel and Cummins also sell pre-set or integrated designs. Radial Insights estimates that the switch to pre-adjusted systems adds roughly 1.1% to the market's annual growth through 2035.

Asian Truck Output Expands the Unit Base

China's heavy truck sales rose about 26% in 2025 to roughly 1.14 million units, with exports reaching a record 330,000, and India's SIAM reported record domestic commercial vehicle sales of 1.08 million units in fiscal 2025-26, up 12.6%. SAF-Holland expects India to drive its Asia Pacific business in 2026. Chinese axle makers such as FUWA are also expanding abroad. This volume growth in Asia contributes close to 1.6 points of the global market's yearly expansion, the largest of the three drivers, because Asia Pacific (APAC) already accounts for the biggest share of hub demand.

Weight and CO2 Targets Lift Value per Hub

The EU's heavy-duty CO2 rules require a 15% cut against 2019 for 2025, with tighter targets later in the decade, and the March 2026 amendment lets makers bank credits over 2025-2029 rather than relax the targets. Lighter wheel ends add payload and range for electric trucks. BPW's Wheelend ECO Pro saves about 20 kg per axle, and ConMet markets aluminum hubs that weigh less than iron versions. Because aluminum and integrated units cost more than basic iron hubs, this trend lifts average selling prices. We attribute about 0.8% of annual value growth to lightweighting and electric axle adoption, concentrated in Europe and in electric bus fleets.

Opportunities

Hubs for Electric Trailers and E-Axles

Regenerative trailer axles and electric refuse trucks need hubs that carry motors, sensors and higher torque loads. Suppliers that design hub-motor modules early can capture a larger share of axle value as electrification grows in buses and urban trucks.

Sensor-Equipped Smart Hubs

Hubs fitted with temperature and vibration sensors can warn fleets before a bearing fails. Telematics-linked wheel ends offer recurring data revenue and a reason for fleets to buy branded replacements instead of low-cost imports.

Asia Pacific Holds the Largest Share of Commercial Vehicle Wheel Hub Demand on the Back of Chinese and Indian Truck Output

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 41.60% share in 2025, worth USD 1,139.8 Million, and is forecast to reach USD 1,883.4 Million by 2035 at a 5.15% CAGR. China sold about 1.14 million heavy trucks in 2025 including record exports of 330,000, and India sold 1.08 million commercial vehicles in fiscal 2025-26. Local axle makers such as FUWA supply much of Asia Pacific (APAC) demand, while ConMet is targeting Japanese and regional OEMs after its May 2026 JSAE showing.

North America

North America accounted for 24.30% of 2025 revenue, or USD 665.8 Million, and should reach USD 943.8 Million by 2035 at 3.55% a year. The North American market has the highest use of pre-adjusted hubs, with ConMet, Webb Wheel, Hendrickson and Accuride all based there. Class 8 net orders of 19,172 in September 2026 show a soft OE cycle, but the large installed base supports aftermarket sales.

Europe

Europe held a 22.80% share in 2025, worth USD 624.7 Million, and is expected to reach USD 889.8 Million in 2035 at 3.60% a year. ACEA recorded 307,460 truck and 38,238 bus registrations in the EU in 2025. European trailer makers favor integrated wheel ends from BPW and SAF-Holland, and CO2 rules push demand for lighter hubs.

Latin America

Latin America represented 5.40% of 2025 revenue, about USD 148.0 Million, and is forecast to grow at 4.70% to USD 234.2 Million by 2035. Brazil's agricultural freight and Mexico's cross-border trucking drive Latin American hub demand, with a strong aftermarket for older trucks.

Middle East

The Middle East held a 3.40% share in 2025, worth USD 93.2 Million, rising to USD 151.7 Million by 2035 at 5.00% a year. Construction and logistics projects in Saudi Arabia and the UAE support truck and trailer purchases in the Middle East, and high heat increases wear on wheel-end seals and bearings.

Africa

Africa had a 2.50% share in 2025, about USD 68.5 Million, and is the fastest-growing region at 5.55%, reaching USD 117.6 Million by 2035. Mining haulage and imported Chinese trucks drive African demand, with South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya the largest markets.

A Few Wheel-End Specialists Control OE Fitment While Bearing Makers Compete for Integrated Units

The commercial vehicle wheel hubs market is concentrated in North America and Europe, where a handful of suppliers hold most OE positions, and more fragmented in Asia, where local axle and foundry groups compete on cost. Competition depends on proven field life, weight, warranty length and the ability to supply complete wheel-end systems.

North American Hub Specialists

ConMet, part of Amsted Industries, invented the pre-adjusted PreSet hub and remains the reference supplier for Class 8 trucks, with iron and aluminum hubs and the eHub electric range. Webb Wheel Products sells UltraSet pre-adjusted hubs and aluminum trailer hubs and took over Stemco's pre-adjusted line. Accuride's Gunite brand makes cast-iron hubs, rotors and drums. Hendrickson supplies integrated wheel ends with its trailer axles and suspensions.

Axle and Trailer System Suppliers

Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems, formerly Meritor, supplies axles and wheel ends to truck OEMs and sells replacement parts under the Meritor name. BPW and SAF-Holland lead the European trailer axle market with integrated wheel ends, and SAF-Holland now includes Haldex brakes. Dana supplies Spicer truck axles with wheel-end assemblies.

Bearing Makers With Hub-Unit Lines

SKF, Schaeffler, Timken, NTN and JTEKT supply hub-bearing units and tapered roller bearings for trucks and buses. Their strength is bearing engineering and global OE relationships, and they are best placed where integrated hub-bearing units replace separate hubs and bearings, especially in Europe and Asia.

Asian Volume Producers and Aftermarket Specialists

Guangdong Fuwa Engineering is one of China's largest trailer axle and hub makers and is expanding in India and Australia. Stemco focuses on wheel-end seals, hub caps and aftermarket kits. Price-led Asian foundries supply much of the replacement demand for older trucks, which keeps pressure on branded suppliers to justify their premium through warranty and uptime data.
