More Gears, Hybrid Drives and E-Axles Turn Transmission Fluid Into a Higher-Value, Lower-Viscosity Market

Radial Insights sizes the automotive transmission fluid market at USD 9.40 Billion for 2025, with revenue climbing to USD 9.74 Billion in 2026 and USD 13.45 Billion by 2035, a 3.65% CAGR. Growth comes from the gearbox mix: 8-, 9- and 10-speed automatics, dual-clutch units, hybrid transmissions and e-axles all need tailored fluids that sell at higher prices than older gear oils.

The Automotive Transmission Fluid market covers finished fluids for automatic, continuously variable, dual-clutch and manual transmissions, plus fluids for dedicated hybrid transmissions (DHT) and electric drive units where the fluid lubricates gears and cools the motor. Values are measured at manufacturer selling prices across OEM factory fill and the aftermarket. The scope excludes axle and differential oils sold for non-transmission uses, power steering fluid, engine oil, coolant, greases, industrial and off-highway hydraulic fluids, and additive packages sold to blenders.

Electrification affects this market differently from engine oil. A battery electric car drops the engine but keeps a reduction gearbox, and many e-axles use one fluid to lubricate gears, bearings and cool the motor windings. The IEA counted more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025, and ZF's 8HP evo, shown at IAA 2025 for mild, full and plug-in hybrids, signals that multi-speed hybrid transmissions will stay in production well into the 2030s.

By fluid type, E-Drive and Dedicated Hybrid Transmission Fluid is the fastest-growing segment at 13.60% CAGR from 2025 to 2035, against 3.10% for conventional ATF. Ultra-Low Viscosity (ULV) fluids grow at 7.40% as Ford, GM and Mercedes-Benz move to MERCON ULV, DEXRON ULV and MB 236.17. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at 4.40% CAGR.

Supply is shaped by a few additive houses. Lubrizol, Afton Chemical and Infineum design most of the additive packages behind branded fluids, and Lubrizol's AT9311 multi-vehicle ATF additive, launched in June 2025 for 9- and 10-speed and hybrid units, shows how one package can serve many OEM specifications.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Ultra-Low Viscosity ATF Moves From Factory Fill to the Aftermarket

Ford and GM 10-speed automatics and several Mercedes-Benz units now specify ULV fluids. In April 2026 Hot Shot's Secret launched Green Diamond ULV, a full Group III synthetic for vehicles that require Ford MERCON ULV, GM DEXRON ULV or MB 236.17, sold in 1-, 5- and 55-gallon packs. Aftermarket ULV launches show that these gearboxes are reaching service age, which lifts value in the Automotive Transmission Fluid market.

Multi-Vehicle Additive Packages Cut Complexity for Blenders

In June 2025 Lubrizol launched its AT9311 ATF additive, built in Shanghai for traditional and hybrid vehicles, 9- and 10-speed transmissions and ULV fluids, and validated over 100,000 km of driving. In March 2025 Texaco Lubricants launched a Multi-Vehicle ATF range of three products, ATF 2, ATF 3 and ATF 6, to reduce misapplication in workshops. Fewer, broader products help distributors serve dozens of OEM specifications.

Hybrid Transmissions Get a Second Generation

At IAA 2025 ZF showed the 8HP evo for 48V mild hybrids, 400V plug-in hybrids and a new 400V full hybrid. In the plug-in version, electric output rises from 160 kW to 200 kW and electric torque from 500 Nm to 600 Nm, while input shaft losses fall by about 28%. Aisin showed a one-motor hybrid transmission with a 6-speed automatic and an 80 kW eAxle at the same show. Each new hybrid design brings fluid specifications that stress cooling, friction control and electrical properties.

E-Axles Merge Gear Lubrication and Motor Cooling

Many e-axles now spray or circulate one fluid over gears, bearings and motor windings. That fluid must resist copper corrosion, stay low in conductivity and carry heat at high motor speeds. With more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025 according to the IEA, e-drive fluids have become the fastest-growing part of the Automotive Transmission Fluid market.

Restraints and Challenges

Fill-for-Life Designs Shrink Aftermarket Volume

Many automatics and most e-axles are marketed as filled for life or carry service intervals above 150,000 km. Owners rarely change the fluid, so aftermarket volume grows slower than the parc and Aftermarket Service and Retail grows only 3.40% a year.

Battery Electric Cars Use Far Less Fluid Than Multi-Speed Automatics

A single-speed e-axle may hold a few liters of fluid against roughly 8 to 10 liters for some 8- and 10-speed automatics. As battery electric share rises, liters per new car fall in China and Europe, even though value per liter rises. The IEA Global EV Outlook 2026 expects about 23 million electric car sales in 2026, close to 30% of new cars.

Specification Proliferation Raises Testing Costs

Each automaker and gearbox supplier publishes its own fluid specifications, and new hybrid units such as those described in ZF's 8HP evo release bring further requirements. Blenders must fund friction durability, shudder and electrical tests for each approval, which favors large additive houses and limits smaller brands.

Misapplication Damages Gearboxes

Using the wrong ATF, CVTF or DCTF can cause shudder, slipping or failure. Workshops facing dozens of specifications sometimes choose a universal fluid that does not meet OEM needs, which hurts trust in multi-vehicle products and raises warranty risk.

Growth Drivers

Hybrid and Electric Drives Create a New Fluid Class

Hybrids and EVs are the biggest growth source in the Automotive Transmission Fluid market. The IEA counted more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025, about 1 in 4 new cars, and China alone sold about 13 million. Each of these vehicles needs either a dedicated hybrid transmission fluid or an e-drive fluid that lubricates gears and cools the motor. ZF's 8HP evo and Aisin's one-motor hybrid transmission, both shown at IAA 2025, prove that automakers are investing in new hybrid gearboxes rather than phasing them out. Prices per liter for e-drive fluids run well above conventional ATF in our supplier checks. We attribute about +1.5% of annual growth to these fluids, which is why E-Drive and Dedicated Hybrid Transmission Fluid grows at 13.60% a year.

More Gears and Lower Viscosity Raise Value per Fill

8-, 9- and 10-speed automatics have replaced 4- and 5-speed units across North America, and 7- and 8-speed DCTs are common in Chinese and European cars. These gearboxes use ULV and LV fluids built on full synthetic base oils. Ford MERCON ULV and GM DEXRON ULV fluids are now sold in the aftermarket, as Hot Shot's Secret's April 2026 Green Diamond launch shows, and Lubrizol's June 2025 AT9311 package targets the same 9- and 10-speed units. In our pricing work, ULV fluids sell at a 30% to 60% premium per liter to older DEXRON III-type fluids. This mix shift contributes roughly 1.1 percentage points of yearly growth, and ULV fluids grow at 7.40% a year.

Automatic Transmission Adoption in Emerging Markets

Automatic, CVT and AMT gearboxes are spreading fast in India, Southeast Asia and Latin America, where manual gearboxes once dominated. Japanese makers such as Toyota, Honda and Suzuki use CVTs widely in Asia, and Chinese makers fit DCTs and DHTs to export models. Each conversion from manual to automatic raises the fluid fill and the price per liter. We estimate this adds about 0.7% to annual growth, which helps Asia Pacific (APAC) post the fastest-growing regional rate at 4.40%.

Opportunities

Aftermarket E-Drive Fluids for the First Wave of EVs

EVs sold between 2020 and 2023 are reaching mileages where some automakers recommend a fluid check or change. Brands that bring certified e-drive fluids to independent workshops can build a new premium line, with the segment growing at 13.60% a year.

Multi-Vehicle ULV Products for Independent Workshops

Independent shops want fewer SKUs. Fluids that meet several ULV and LV specifications at once, backed by additive packages such as Lubrizol AT9311, can replace many single-OEM products and win shelf space as ULV gearboxes age.

Asia Pacific Is the Largest and Fastest-Growing Transmission Fluid Region on CVT, DCT and Hybrid Output

Regional growth in the Automotive Transmission Fluid market tracks vehicle production, the share of automatic and hybrid gearboxes, and the speed of battery electric adoption. Regions with rising automatic and hybrid output gain the most, while regions with mature automatic fleets depend on ULV upgrades.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 45.20% of 2025 revenue, or USD 4.25 Billion, and reaches USD 6.54 Billion by 2035 at a 4.40% CAGR, the highest regional rate. China sold about 13 million electric cars in 2025, many with DHT or e-axle drives, and Japan leads in CVT use. Lubrizol developed its AT9311 package in Shanghai with China's aftermarket in mind.

North America

North America holds 23.80% of 2025 revenue at USD 2.24 Billion and reaches USD 3.01 Billion by 2035 at 3.00% a year. North America has the highest automatic share of any region, and Ford and GM 10-speed units are moving the region to MERCON ULV and DEXRON ULV fluids, as seen in Hot Shot's Secret's April 2026 launch.

Europe

Europe holds 19.30% of 2025 revenue, about USD 1.81 Billion, rising to USD 2.37 Billion by 2035 at 2.70% CAGR, the slowest regional rate. Europe is shifting from manual gearboxes to DCTs, ZF 8-speed hybrids and e-axles at the same time, and electric car sales there rose nearly 30% in the first quarter of 2026.

Latin America

Latin America holds 5.90% of 2025 revenue at USD 0.55 Billion and reaches USD 0.77 Billion by 2035 at 3.40% CAGR. Brazil and Mexico are moving from manual to CVT and automatic gearboxes in compact cars and SUVs, which raises fluid value per vehicle across Latin America.

Middle East

The Middle East holds 3.70% of 2025 revenue, about USD 0.35 Billion, and reaches USD 0.50 Billion by 2035 at 3.75% a year. Middle East buyers favor large automatic SUVs and pickups, and high heat shortens fluid life, which supports regular service.

Africa

Africa holds 2.10% of 2025 revenue at USD 0.20 Billion and grows at 4.20% CAGR to USD 0.30 Billion in 2035. Used automatic cars imported from Japan and Europe raise ATF demand in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana, where many vehicles reach Africa with old fluid that needs replacing.

Additive Houses Shape the Chemistry While Oil Majors Control Factory Fill in Transmission Fluid

The Automotive Transmission Fluid market has a layered structure. Three additive companies design most of the chemistry, oil majors and national oil companies blend and supply factory fill, and specialist brands compete in the aftermarket. OEM and gearbox-maker approvals are the key barrier to entry.

Additive Technology Leaders

Lubrizol, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, is a leading ATF additive supplier; its June 2025 AT9311 package covers traditional and hybrid vehicles and 9- and 10-speed transmissions with a single treat. Afton Chemical was among the first to launch an additive for e-transmission fluids. Infineum offers a portfolio of e-fluid additives for hybrid and electric transmissions and reports more than 300 billion miles of field use with e-motors. Together they supply the base chemistry for many branded fluids.

Factory Fill and Global Brand Owners

ExxonMobil sells Mobil ATF products and Mobil EV fluids for electric drives. Shell plc sells Shell Spirax transmission fluids and Shell E-Fluids for electric drives. Castrol, now heading for Stonepeak's ownership, sells Transmax ATF and Castrol ON e-fluids. TotalEnergies holds long-running lubricant partnerships with Stellantis and Renault, and Chevron sells Havoline ATF. Idemitsu Kosan and ENEOS Holdings supply transmission fluids to Japanese automakers, a market where CVTs and hybrids are common.

Aftermarket and Regional Specialists

Valvoline Global Operations sells MaxLife multi-vehicle ATF and hybrid transmission fluids. FUCHS SE offers BluEV dedicated hybrid transmission fluids and TITAN ATF products. Motul markets DHT e-ATF fluids, and PETRONAS Lubricants International and Sinopec Lubricant Company supply growing volumes in Asia. Smaller brands such as Hot Shot's Secret target ULV aftermarket demand.

Where the Competition Is Heading

Winners will hold approvals for ULV, DHT and e-axle fluids with ZF, Aisin, BYD and other drive makers, and will offer multi-vehicle aftermarket products that reduce misapplication. Ownership changes such as the Castrol deal could also bring sharper focus on high-margin specialty fluids like these.
