Hybrid and Asian Engine Output Keep Piston Ring Demand Rising Through 2035

Global spending on automotive piston rings reached USD 4.86 Billion in 2025, and Radial Insights expects it to rise to USD 5.00 Billion in 2026 and USD 6.44 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 2.85%. The Automotive Piston Rings market grows slowly but steadily because every gasoline, diesel, hybrid and hydrogen combustion engine still needs a ring pack.

This study covers compression rings, scraper rings and oil control rings sold for on-road vehicles, both to engine plants (OEM) and through the replacement trade. Each four-cylinder engine typically carries 12 rings, so the market tracks engine builds more closely than vehicle sales. We exclude pistons, piston pins, cylinder liners, marine and stationary engine rings, and rings for off-highway machinery.

The demand base is still large. OICA counted 96.4 million vehicles built worldwide in 2025, up 3.9% on 2024, and China alone assembled 34.53 million units. Even with 20.7 million battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars sold in 2025, most of the global fleet and most new builds still burn fuel, and plug-in hybrids carry a full ring pack.

PVD Coated rings are the fastest coating segment at a 4.48% CAGR, as thinner, low-tension steel rings replace chromium plating to cut friction and meet Euro 7 durability rules. By region, Asia Pacific (APAC) leads on both size and pace, growing at 3.51% a year on Chinese and Indian engine output and two-wheeler volume.

Supply is concentrated. MAHLE, Tenneco through Federal-Mogul, NPR-RIKEN, TPR and SPR Auto Technologies hold most OEM programs, and the April 2026 agreement by NPR-RIKEN to buy Hastings Holding Corp. adds the leading North American replacement ring brand to a Japanese OEM supplier.

Oil control rings grow fastest among ring types because oil-consumption limits keep tightening

Top compression rings remain the largest ring type by value since they carry the most demanding coatings. Oil control rings grow faster, at 3.24% a year, because three-piece and two-piece designs with steel rails are now specified to cut lube oil consumption, a key input to particulate emissions under Euro 7. Second (scraper) rings grow slowest at 2.58% as many downsized engines move to simpler profiles.

Steel gains on cast iron as engines downsize and turbocharge

Cast iron still dominates heavy diesel and value two-wheeler engines, so its 2.05% CAGR reflects stable volume rather than decline. Steel rings grow at 3.92% because turbocharged gasoline engines with higher peak cylinder pressure need thinner, stronger top rings. The October 2026 Federal-Mogul Goetze plan adds 5.04 million steel PVD ring sets, a sign of where Indian OEM demand is heading.

PVD coatings replace hard chrome on friction and environmental grounds

Chromium plated rings grow at only 1.86%: hexavalent chromium is under authorisation pressure in Europe, and plating lines are costly to keep compliant. PVD coated rings, led by chromium nitride layers, grow at 4.48% since they cut wear and friction. Nitrided rings, at 3.12%, remain the cost option for steel oil rails, while plasma sprayed molybdenum stays in heavy-duty diesel at 2.74%.

Two-wheelers and heavy trucks grow faster than passenger cars

Passenger cars are the largest vehicle segment but grow at 2.41% as battery electric cars take share in China and Europe. Two-wheelers grow at 4.05% on Indian and Southeast Asian scooter and motorcycle output, where electrification is slower. Heavy commercial vehicles grow at 3.37% because long-haul trucks stay on diesel, natural gas and, from the late 2020s, hydrogen combustion engines.

The aftermarket gains on an ageing global fleet

OEM supply grows at 2.26%, tied to engine builds. The aftermarket grows at 3.72% because the average vehicle age keeps rising in North America and Europe, and engine rebuilds in Latin America, Africa and South Asia depend on ring kits. The Hastings brand, a replacement specialist, is the asset NPR-RIKEN agreed to buy in April 2026.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Supplier consolidation in Japan and the United States

Nippon Piston Ring and Riken combined under the NPR-RIKEN holding company, and on April 13, 2026 its board approved the acquisition of all shares of Hastings Holding Corp. through Riken Corporation of America. Hastings Holding, which controls Hastings Manufacturing in the U.S. and Piston Rings Komarov in the Czech Republic, reported net sales of USD 58.3 million in fiscal 2023. The deal gives a Japanese OEM supplier a direct aftermarket brand in North America and a European plant.

Capacity moves to India

India is the one large market where combustion engine output is still growing fast. Federal-Mogul Goetze (India) approved INR 335.1 crore on October 9, 2026 to add 8.15 million cast iron piston rings and 5.04 million steel PVD ring sets within 18 months, from an existing base of 54 million cast iron rings and 19.2 million PVD sets running at full utilisation. MAHLE reported that India was its fastest-growing region in 2025, with currency-adjusted sales up more than 20%.

Hybrids keep the ring pack in volume production

Toyota sold a record 5.04 million electrified vehicles in its 2025 fiscal year, about 48% of its 10.48 million total, and almost all of them were hybrids with gasoline engines. Hybrid engines run more stop-start cycles and lower oil temperatures, which raises the technical bar for oil control rings and favours low-tension designs. Suppliers now quote hybrid-specific ring packs rather than carrying over conventional designs.

Ring makers diversify while defending their core

Shriram Pistons and Rings formally became SPR Auto Technologies on April 2, 2026, and in December 2025 agreed to buy three Grupo Antolin India units for about INR 16.7 billion. MAHLE's 2030+ strategy lists combustion engine leadership alongside electrification, and its 2025 order intake for piston systems was among its largest contributors. The pattern is clear: ring makers are using cash from a mature business to buy growth in other parts.

Restraints and Challenges

Battery electric cars remove the ring pack entirely

About 20.7 million battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars were sold in 2025, and China accounted for nearly 60% of them. Each battery electric car removes 12 to 16 rings from future OEM demand and, years later, from the replacement pool. This is the main reason the passenger car segment grows below the market average.

Vehicle output in Europe and the Americas is flat or falling

According to OICA's 2025 production statistics, Europe built 17.2 million vehicles in 2025, down 0.8%, and the Americas built 18.74 million, down 2.1%. Plant closures follow: NPR-RIKEN said it would close the Michigan plant of NPR of America, which employed about 70 people, and move its output to other sites.

Coating and environmental compliance costs

Hard chrome plating relies on hexavalent chromium, which needs authorisation in the European Union and strict controls elsewhere. Converting lines to PVD takes heavy capital, and the October 2026 Indian expansion plan of INR 335.1 crore shows the scale even for a mid-size producer. Smaller ring makers in Latin America and Africa struggle to fund this shift.

Margin pressure in a maturing business

MAHLE's 2025 sales fell to EUR 11.257 billion from EUR 11.681 billion, and its adjusted EBIT margin was 3.9%. SPR Auto's profit after tax for October to December 2025 fell 4.5% even as revenue rose. Thin margins limit price cuts and push buyers toward dual sourcing from Chinese and Indian ring plants.

Growth Drivers

Engine output in Asia keeps adding ring volume

OICA data show China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, about 3.25 million more than in 2024, and India built 6.49 million. Even after counting electric models, Chinese plants produced well over 20 million combustion and hybrid engines, and India's car, truck and two-wheeler engines remain almost entirely combustion-based. India also builds more than 20 million two-wheelers a year, each with a full ring set. This driver adds about +1.1% of annual growth to the Automotive Piston Rings market through 2035, and it explains why Asia Pacific (APAC) grows at 3.51% while Europe grows at 1.42%. Federal-Mogul Goetze and SPR Auto are both adding capacity in India to serve both domestic OEMs and export customers.

Hybrids and stricter emission rules raise ring value per engine

Euro 7 applies to new car and van types from November 29, 2026 and to all new cars from November 29, 2027, with longer durability requirements for emission performance. Low oil consumption over a longer life needs better oil control rings and harder top ring coatings, which lifts average selling prices. Toyota's 5.04 million electrified sales in 2025 show how large the hybrid base already is, and Japanese, Korean and Chinese automakers are adding hybrid lines for export. We estimate that richer coatings and hybrid ring packs contribute roughly 0.8 percentage points of the 2.85% CAGR, mostly through price and mix rather than unit volume. PVD coated rings at 4.48% and steel rings at 3.92% are the clearest result.

An older fleet supports replacement ring kits

Vehicles stay on the road longer in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Africa, and engine overhauls create steady demand for ring sets, gaskets and bearings. Aftermarket specialists such as Hastings Manufacturing, MAHLE Aftermarket, Federal-Mogul's Goetze brand and SPR's replacement business sell through distributors and engine rebuilders. Replacement demand grows at 3.72% a year, compared with 2.26% for OEM supply, and is worth about +0.6% of yearly market expansion. NPR-RIKEN's April 2026 move to buy Hastings Holding Corp., which reported USD 58.3 million in sales in 2023, shows that OEM suppliers now see the replacement channel as a growth asset rather than a side business.

Opportunities

Hydrogen and alternative fuel engines

Cummins has developed its X15H hydrogen combustion engine for heavy trucks, and Indian and Japanese makers are testing multi-fuel engines. Hydrogen combustion raises the risk of blow-by and water in the oil, so ring makers with new coatings and gap designs can win premium early programs.

Export supply from India

Indian ring producers already run at full utilisation, and new capacity is approved through 2028. As plants in Michigan and Europe close, global OEMs and distributors can source PVD steel rings from India at lower cost, which favours SPR Auto, Federal-Mogul Goetze and other Indian exporters.

Asia Pacific Holds More Than Half of Global Piston Ring Spending

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 52.40% of the Automotive Piston Rings market in 2025, worth USD 2.55 Billion. The region rises to USD 3.60 Billion by 2035 at a 3.51% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China built 34.53 million vehicles and India 6.49 million in 2025, and India's scooter and motorcycle engines add tens of millions of ring sets a year.

North America

North America held a 15.80% share in 2025, equal to USD 0.77 Billion. Spending in North America reaches USD 0.93 Billion by 2035 at 1.95% a year. The United States built 10.24 million vehicles in 2025, and the replacement trade led by Hastings and MAHLE Aftermarket supports demand as the fleet ages.

Europe

Europe represented 19.60% of global demand in 2025, or USD 0.95 Billion. Europe grows to USD 1.10 Billion by 2035 at 1.42%, the slowest rate, because its output fell 0.8% to 17.2 million vehicles in 2025 and battery electric cars gain share. Euro 7 durability rules from November 2026 raise ring value per engine.

Latin America

Latin America had a 5.70% share in 2025, worth USD 0.28 Billion. Latin America rises to USD 0.37 Billion by 2035 at 3.05%. Flex-fuel engines in Brazil and engine rebuild demand in Mexico, Argentina and Colombia keep both OEM and replacement volumes steady.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 3.60% in 2025, or USD 0.17 Billion. Middle East spending reaches USD 0.24 Billion by 2035 at 3.30% a year. Hot climates and heavy diesel truck use shorten ring life, and Turkey's engine plants serve European OEMs.

Africa

Africa held a 2.90% share in 2025, worth USD 0.14 Billion. Africa grows to USD 0.20 Billion by 2035 at 3.45%. Imported used vehicles and long service lives make Africa a replacement-led ring market, with Morocco and South Africa hosting most local vehicle assembly.
