Electrification is shifting cooling fan demand from engines to batteries and power electronics

Radial Insights sizes the automotive cooling fans market at USD 5.94 Billion for 2025, rising to USD 6.22 Billion in 2026 and USD 9.36 Billion by 2035 on a 4.65% CAGR. The fan is losing its link to the combustion engine and gaining a new role in battery and heat pump systems.

The market covers front-end cooling fans and fan modules fitted to light and heavy vehicles: electric fan modules with motor, blade, shroud and controller, viscous clutch fans and fixed mechanical fans driven by the engine. These fans move air through the radiator, the air conditioning condenser and the low-temperature radiators that cool batteries, inverters and motors. Cabin HVAC blowers, seat ventilation fans, small electronics fans and the heat exchangers themselves are excluded.

The automotive cooling fans market tracks vehicle output, which OICA put at 96.4 million units in 2025, up 3.9%. Value per vehicle is rising because electric and hybrid cars often need larger fan modules with brushless motors that run more hours each day, including while the car is parked and charging.

The fastest-growing segment is High Voltage (400V to 800V) fans at an 11.20% CAGR, led by electric buses and trucks. The fastest-growing region is Africa at a 5.60% CAGR from a small base, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 50.60% of revenue and grows at 5.16%.

Thermal management suppliers are consolidating. Hankook and Company completed its takeover of Hanon Systems in January 2025, and Gentherm agreed in January 2026 to combine with the Modine Performance Technologies business in a deal valued at about USD 1 Billion. Scale in motors and electronics now matters as much as aerodynamic know-how.

By fan type, electric fan modules lead

Electric Fan Modules grow at 5.60% and already dominate passenger cars, because they run only when needed and save fuel or battery energy. Viscous Clutch Fans grow at 1.80%; they remain standard on diesel trucks and pickups but lose ground as truck makers adopt electric fans. Fixed Mechanical Fans grow at 0.50%, used mainly on tractors, older truck designs and low-cost vehicles.

By motor type, brushless motors take over

Brushless DC (BLDC) fans grow at 8.70% because they last far longer and allow precise speed control. SPAL rates its brushless fans for up to 40,000 hours, roughly the life of a commercial vehicle. Brushed DC fans grow at 1.90%; they stay in cost-sensitive cars where the fan runs only a few hours a week, and Brose builds cooling fan modules that use brushless motors for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles alike.

By voltage, high-voltage fans grow fastest

High Voltage (400V to 800V) fans grow at 11.20%. Running directly off the traction battery removes the DC-DC converter and cuts energy loss, a feature SPAL introduced with its 600V to 800V range in 2025. The 24V and 48V band grows at 6.10%, driven by trucks, buses and mild hybrids. The 12V band grows at 3.40% and still covers most passenger cars.

By application, battery and power electronics cooling rises quickly

Battery and Power Electronics Cooling grows at 10.40%, as every battery electric vehicle needs a low-temperature cooling loop and fans that also run during fast charging. Condenser and HVAC Cooling grows at 5.20%, supported by heat pumps, which Mahle now integrates into its thermal management modules. Engine Radiator Cooling grows at only 2.60% as combustion engine volumes flatten.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Thermal management suppliers consolidate

Hankook and Company completed its acquisition of Hanon Systems in January 2025, taking a 54.77% stake in the company described as the world's second-largest automotive thermal management supplier. In January 2026, Gentherm and Modine agreed a Reverse Morris Trust deal valued at about USD 1 Billion that combines Gentherm with the Modine Performance Technologies business, which has about USD 1.1 Billion of annual revenue. Larger groups can fund the motors and electronics that modern fan modules need.

Integrated thermal modules absorb the fan

In April 2026, Hanon Systems began supplying a highly integrated cooling unit for electric vehicles that combines several components into one high-power-density module. Mahle highlighted a thermal management module with an integrated heat pump in its 2025 results. When fans, heat exchangers and pumps are sold together, module suppliers capture more of the value.

High-voltage fans arrive in electric buses and trucks

SPAL Automotive Technology India showed 600V to 800V and 48V fans at the Passenger Vehicle Expo in Chennai in September 2025, removing the need for DC-DC converters. The company reported orders from Switch Mobility and Ashok Leyland and said passenger EV makers such as Maruti, Tata and Mahindra are exploring brushless fans.

Suppliers shift investment toward EV thermal systems

Johnson Electric, a major maker of fan motors, reported Automotive Products Group sales of USD 3,054 Million for the year to March 2026 and named thermal management systems for electric and hybrid vehicles as a growth area for investment. Mahle said cooling modules were among the largest contributors to its 2025 OEM order intake.

Restraints and Challenges

Flat vehicle production in mature regions

European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025, and output in the Americas fell 2.1% (OICA). Johnson Electric reported automotive sales in Europe down 2% at constant currency for the year to March 2026, citing sluggish demand and excess OEM capacity (HKEX results filing).

Price pressure on commodity 12V fans

Standard 12V brushed fan modules are a mature, price-driven product. Chinese suppliers compete hard on cost, and automakers expect annual price cuts. This keeps value growth in the 12V band at just 3.40% a year.

Loss of engine fan content

Battery electric vehicles have no engine-driven fans, and viscous clutch fans disappear as trucks electrify. Engine Radiator Cooling grows at only 2.60% in our model, which drags on suppliers whose portfolios lean on mechanical and viscous products.

Copper, magnet and semiconductor costs

Brushless fans need permanent magnets, copper windings and power electronics. Swings in rare earth magnet and copper prices squeeze margins on fixed-price contracts, and controller chips add supply risk. Some suppliers are working on designs that reduce rare earth content.

Growth Drivers

Battery electric vehicles need more cooling hours

The IEA reported more than 20 million electric car sales worldwide in 2025, up about 20%, and expects about 23 million in 2026, close to 30% of new car sales. China built 16.63 million new energy vehicles in 2025, up 29%, according to OICA. An electric car needs fans for its battery chiller, inverter and motor cooling loop, and those fans run during fast charging when heat loads peak. Brushless fan modules for EVs therefore carry higher value and longer duty cycles than a simple engine fan. Hanon Systems, now part of Hankook and Company, began supplying an integrated EV cooling unit in April 2026. Radial Insights estimates that electrification adds about 1.3 percentage points to the market's yearly growth over the forecast period.

Electrified buses and trucks adopt high-voltage brushless fans

Electric buses and trucks carry large batteries and power electronics that need strong airflow. SPAL rates its brushless fans for up to 40,000 hours and now offers 600V to 800V versions that run directly from the traction battery, and it holds more than 90% of India's electric bus brushless fan segment. Ashok Leyland and Switch Mobility are among its customers. Because each electric bus uses several high-power fans, value per vehicle is many times that of a car. High Voltage (400V to 800V) fans grow at 11.20% in our model, and we credit commercial vehicle electrification with close to 0.6 points of annual market growth.

Heat pumps and stricter cabin and fuel rules raise condenser airflow needs

Heat pumps, now common in electric cars, use the front-end heat exchanger in both heating and cooling modes, which raises fan running time. Mahle reported EUR 6.1 Billion of Thermal and Fluid Systems sales in 2025 and named air conditioning systems with integrated electric heaters and cooling modules among its largest OEM order sources. Fuel economy rules in the United States, Europe, China and India also push automakers toward variable-speed electric fans that cut parasitic engine load. Condenser and HVAC Cooling grows at 5.20% in our segmentation, and we estimate this driver contributes roughly 0.8 points of yearly growth.

Opportunities

Brushless upgrades in mass-market cars

Brushless DC (BLDC) fans grow at 8.70%. As Indian and Southeast Asian automakers launch more electric and hybrid models, suppliers that can offer brushless modules at close to brushed prices can win large volume programs.

Replacement demand in the aftermarket

The global vehicle fleet keeps aging, and fan motors wear out after years of use. Aftermarket brands such as Valeo Service sell complete cooling fan assemblies, and electric fan retrofits for older trucks offer fuel savings that fleet operators can measure.

Asia Pacific supplies half of cooling fan demand while smaller regions grow faster

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 50.60% share in 2025, worth about USD 3.01 Billion, and should reach USD 4.97 Billion by 2035 at a 5.16% CAGR. Vehicle production in Asia rose 7.6% to about 59.2 million units in 2025, per OICA, with China building 34.53 million vehicles. China's 16.63 million new energy vehicles in 2025 add battery cooling fans on top of radiator fans, and India's electric bus programs use high-voltage brushless fans from SPAL.

North America

North America accounted for 19.10% of 2025 revenue, about USD 1.13 Billion, rising to USD 1.70 Billion by 2035 at a 4.10% CAGR. The United States produced 10.24 million vehicles and sold 16.7 million in 2025, per OICA. Pickups and Class 8 trucks keep viscous and electric fan demand high, and Horton supplies fan drives to PACCAR under a long-term agreement.

Europe

Europe represented a 21.80% share, about USD 1.29 Billion in 2025, and should reach USD 1.86 Billion by 2035 at a 3.70% CAGR. European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025. Mahle, Valeo, Bosch and Brose are headquartered in the region, and heat pump adoption in European electric cars raises fan running hours.

Latin America

Latin America held 4.60% of the market in 2025, about USD 273.24 Million, growing to USD 440.86 Million by 2035 at a 4.90% CAGR. Brazil built 2.64 million vehicles in 2025, per OICA. Brose do Brasil has won new cooling fan module business with local automakers, and hot climates keep fan duty cycles long.

Middle East

The Middle East took a 2.40% share in 2025, about USD 142.56 Million, and should reach USD 236.68 Million by 2035 at a 5.20% CAGR. Extreme summer heat in the Gulf drives early replacement of fan motors, and new vehicle assembly projects in Saudi Arabia add original equipment demand.

Africa

Africa accounted for 1.50% of 2025 revenue, about USD 89.10 Million, rising to USD 153.64 Million by 2035 at a 5.60% CAGR, the fastest regional rate. OICA reported African vehicle sales up 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025. Morocco and South Africa assemble vehicles for export, and an aging car fleet supports aftermarket fan sales.
