Battery and Power Electronics Cooling Lifts Engine Coolant Demand Beyond the Combustion Engine Fleet

Global spending on automotive engine coolant stands at USD 6.95 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 7.27 Billion in 2026 and USD 10.90 Billion by 2035 at a 4.60% CAGR. Unlike engine oil, coolant demand does not disappear with electrification: battery packs, inverters and e-motors all run on glycol-based coolant loops, often holding more fluid than a small engine.

Radial Insights defines the Automotive Engine Coolant market as glycol-based heat transfer fluids and antifreeze, sold as concentrate or pre-diluted 50/50 product, for engine cooling circuits and for battery, inverter and e-drive thermal loops in on-road vehicles, two-wheelers and off-highway machines. Values are at manufacturer selling prices and include OEM factory fill, dealer and workshop service fill, retail and online sales. The scope excludes refrigerants, dielectric immersion fluids, industrial and data center coolants, windshield washer fluid and coolant additives sold alone.

Two forces shape the forecast. First, the installed engine fleet still needs coolant changes every 5 to 10 years with long-life OAT products. Second, electric and hybrid vehicles add new cooling circuits that need low electrical conductivity coolant. China made this a rule: the GB 29743.2-2025 standard for EV coolants took effect on 1 October 2025, and BASF, Prestone and Arteco all launched or expanded compliant products around that date.

By application, Battery and Power Electronics Cooling is the fastest-growing segment at 12.40% CAGR, almost four times the 3.30% rate for Engine Cooling. By technology, Organic Acid Technology (OAT) grows at 5.40% while legacy Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT) grows only 0.95%. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at 5.45% CAGR.

Regulation also reshapes formulas. In Europe, 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA), a common OAT inhibitor, carries a Repr. 1B classification with a 0.3% generic limit that has applied since 1 December 2023, so blenders such as Wolf have moved to 2-EHA-free and borate-free recipes. These reformulations raise inhibitor costs and support higher prices per liter.

OAT Leads Technology Growth at 5.40% While IAT Fades to 0.95%

Organic Acid Technology (OAT) grows at 5.40% because most new engines and nearly all EV loops specify long-life OAT formulas, such as GM DEX-COOL and its equivalents. Hybrid OAT (HOAT and Si-OAT) grows at 4.90%, backed by European makers that add silicate for aluminum protection. Phosphate OAT (P-OAT), the Japanese and Korean standard, grows at 4.70%. Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT), the old green coolant with a two-year change interval, grows only 0.95% and survives mainly in older fleets.

Bio-Based Glycols Grow at 8.10% From a Small Base as Automakers Seek Lower Carbon Fluids

Ethylene Glycol remains the dominant base fluid and grows at 4.20%. Propylene Glycol grows faster at 5.60% because it is less toxic and is preferred in some EV and fleet programs. Glycerin and Bio-Based Glycols grow at 8.10% as Arteco and BASF offer bio-based or recycled glycol versions of their coolants.

Battery and Power Electronics Cooling Grows at 12.40% as EV Sales Pass 20 Million

The IEA counted more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025, and every one of them needs a low-conductivity coolant loop. Battery and Power Electronics Cooling therefore grows at 12.40%, the fastest rate across all segments. Engine Cooling still makes up most of the market but grows only 3.30%, supported by hybrids, which carry both an engine circuit and an electric circuit.

Passenger Cars Grow at 4.75% and Heavy Commercial Vehicles at 3.90%

Passenger Cars lead growth at 4.75% because they adopt EV loops fastest. Light Commercial Vehicles grow at 4.55% as electric vans spread in Europe and China. Heavy Commercial Vehicles grow at 3.90%, with extended-life heavy-duty coolants such as Prestone Command and Fleetguard products cutting change frequency. Two-Wheelers and Off-Highway grow at 4.20%.

OEM Factory Fill Grows at 4.85% on Larger Fill Volumes per Vehicle

OEM Factory Fill grows at 4.85% because EVs and hybrids hold more coolant than engine-only cars. Retail and Online grows at 4.70%, helped by product launches such as Uno Minda's coolant range in India, which sells through Amazon and Flipkart. Aftermarket Service grows at 4.35% as longer change intervals offset a bigger parc.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Low Electrical Conductivity Coolants Become a Separate Product Class

China's GB 29743.2-2025 standard for EV coolants took effect on 1 October 2025. In September 2025 BASF launched Glysantin Electrified low electrical conductivity coolants (LECCs) and began production at its Pudong site in Shanghai. In April 2026 Arteco expanded its low-conductivity line for EV indirect cooling to three products, all below 100 microsiemens per cm. Prestone markets its EVX range, which it says passed an 800-volt test without combustion. The Automotive Engine Coolant market now has a premium tier priced well above standard OAT coolant.

European Rules Push Out 2-EHA and Borates

The EU CLP 18th Adaptation to Technical Progress classified 2-ethylhexanoic acid as Repr. 1B and replaced the old 4.5% specific limit with a 0.3% generic limit, binding from 1 December 2023. Blenders responded with new inhibitor packages: Wolf launched coolants free of both borate and 2-EHA, and FUCHS publishes a list of affected products. Reformulation adds cost but also resets shelf space in favor of brands that move first.

Coolant Brand Owners Consolidate and Rebrand

In May 2025 Recochem brought its brands, including Prestone, Holts and KOST, under the name Performance Fluid Experts (PFX) Group, which runs 17 manufacturing plants and four R&D centers. In November 2025 PFX made its first public appearance at AAPEX in Las Vegas and showed OEM by Prestone, Prestone Leak Detect, a Top-Off pouch and the EVX line. Larger portfolios give coolant makers more power with retailers and fleets.

Coolant Makers Look Beyond Vehicles for Scale

In April 2025 Arteco, the Chevron and TotalEnergies joint venture, launched ZITREC EC direct-to-chip coolants for data centers, based on the same organic additive technology it sells to automakers. This trend matters for the Automotive Engine Coolant market because shared glycol supply chains, plants and test labs lower unit costs, even though data center fluids sit outside our scope.

Restraints and Challenges

Long-Life Coolants Cut Service Frequency

Many new cars now carry coolant rated for 10 years or about 240,000 km, against two to three years for old IAT coolant. Fewer change events limit aftermarket volume in North America, Europe and Japan, which is why Aftermarket Service grows slower than OEM Factory Fill.

Glycol Price Swings Squeeze Margins

Monoethylene glycol is a petrochemical tied to ethylene and polyester demand, and its price moves with crude oil and Chinese polyester output. Coolant makers that sell under annual retail contracts cannot always pass increases through, and private label products pressure branded pricing.

Regulatory Classification of Inhibitors Raises Costs

The Repr. 1B classification of 2-EHA under the EU CLP regime, recorded by the European Chemicals Agency, forces relabeling or reformulation of products containing 0.3% or more. Each new inhibitor package needs OEM approval testing that can take one to two years, which is costly for smaller blenders.

Mixing and Misapplication Damage Engines and Trust

Different OAT, HOAT and P-OAT chemistries do not always mix well, and EV loops need low-conductivity fluid that ordinary coolant cannot replace. Workshops that top up with the wrong product risk corrosion or electrical faults. Electric car growth, which the IEA Global EV Outlook 2026 put above 20 million sales in 2025, makes correct product choice more important for service networks.

Growth Drivers

Electric and Hybrid Vehicles Add New Cooling Circuits

Electrification is the largest single driver of the Automotive Engine Coolant market. The IEA reported more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025 and expects about 23 million in 2026, close to 30% of new cars. Each battery electric car uses one or more low-conductivity loops for the battery, inverter and motor, and plug-in hybrids keep an engine loop as well. Prestone says it already supplies more than 3 million gallons a year of EV thermal management fluid to global automakers. China's GB 29743.2-2025 rule, effective 1 October 2025, made low-conductivity coolant a legal requirement for new EVs sold there. Our model credits EV and hybrid fill with about +1.6% of annual growth, more than a third of the 4.60% CAGR, and Battery and Power Electronics Cooling grows at 12.40% a year.

Premium Long-Life and Reformulated Coolants Raise Value per Liter

Coolant value grows faster than volume because buyers move from IAT to OAT, HOAT and P-OAT products and from concentrate to pre-diluted 50/50 jugs. In Europe, the 0.3% limit on 2-EHA has pushed brands such as Wolf into new 2-EHA-free formulas with costlier inhibitors. In the United States, PFX introduced OEM by Prestone Premium Original Antifreeze + Coolant at AAPEX in November 2025, aimed at matching factory specifications. Higher-spec products sell for 20% to 50% more per gallon than universal green coolant in our retail checks. We estimate this mix effect adds roughly 1.0 point to annual growth.

Growing Vehicle Parcs in Asia, the Middle East and Africa

Car and two-wheeler fleets in India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Nigeria keep growing, and hot climates raise coolant use and top-up frequency. In April 2026 Uno Minda entered India's coolant market with Tropical and Anti-freeze OAT variants priced at INR 272 and INR 575, sold through more than 40,000 retailers and 70,000 service points. Local launches like this widen access to branded coolant in markets where plain water is still common. Parc growth and branded substitution add about 0.8% to annual growth and explain why Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at 5.45%.

Opportunities

Certified EV Coolants for the Global Aftermarket

Most low-conductivity coolant today goes into factory fill. As the first large wave of EVs sold in 2020 to 2023 reaches its first coolant service, independent workshops will need certified LECC products, giving aftermarket brands a new premium line.

Bio-Based and Recycled Glycol Coolants

Automakers with scope 3 carbon targets are asking for lower carbon fluids. Coolant makers that offer bio-based or recycled glycol at price parity can win factory fill contracts, with the Glycerin and Bio-Based Glycols segment growing at 8.10% a year.

Asia Pacific Leads Engine Coolant Revenue and Grows Fastest as China Sets the EV Coolant Standard

Regional patterns in the Automotive Engine Coolant market depend on how many vehicles each region builds, how fast it electrifies and how hot its climate is. Regions that build many EVs gain factory fill demand, while regions with aging fleets and hot weather gain service demand.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 42.30% of 2025 revenue, or USD 2.94 Billion, and reaches USD 5.00 Billion by 2035 at a 5.45% CAGR, the fastest regional rate. China sold about 13 million electric cars in 2025, and its GB 29743.2-2025 standard makes Asia Pacific the first region with a mandatory EV coolant rule. BASF now makes Glysantin Electrified at Pudong, and Uno Minda's April 2026 launch shows branded coolant spreading in India.

North America

North America holds 24.10% of 2025 revenue at USD 1.67 Billion and reaches USD 2.44 Billion by 2035 at 3.85% a year. North America is the home of Prestone, PEAK and Zerex, and its pickup and SUV fleet carries large coolant volumes. Prestone's EVX supply of more than 3 million gallons a year serves automakers building EVs in the United States and Mexico.

Europe

Europe holds 20.60% of 2025 revenue, about USD 1.43 Billion, rising to USD 2.06 Billion by 2035 at 3.70% CAGR, the slowest regional rate. European demand is shaped by the 2-EHA classification, a high share of silicate HOAT coolants and fast EV adoption, with European electric car sales up nearly 30% year on year in the first quarter of 2026.

Latin America

Latin America holds 6.20% of 2025 revenue at USD 0.43 Billion and reaches USD 0.66 Billion by 2035 at 4.35% CAGR. Brazil and Mexico assemble millions of engine vehicles a year, and Latin America's hot climates and older fleets support steady aftermarket demand.

Middle East

The Middle East holds 4.30% of 2025 revenue, about USD 0.30 Billion, and reaches USD 0.47 Billion by 2035 at 4.55% a year. Summer temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius in the Gulf raise cooling system stress, and Middle East buyers favor long-life OAT products for SUVs and commercial fleets.

Africa

Africa holds 2.50% of 2025 revenue at USD 0.17 Billion and grows at 5.10% CAGR to USD 0.29 Billion in 2035. Many African drivers still use water instead of coolant, so the move to branded antifreeze in Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and South Africa is a growth source on its own.

Chemical Majors and Specialist Fluid Brands Split Engine Coolant Leadership Between Factory Fill and Retail

The Automotive Engine Coolant market has two layers. Chemical and oil majors own inhibitor technology and supply OEM factory fill, while specialist brands own the retail shelf and fleet channels. Competition now turns on OEM approvals for OAT and LECC fluids, compliance with China's EV coolant standard and the reach of retail brands.

Technology and Factory Fill Leaders

BASF SE owns the Glysantin brand, one of the most widely approved coolant technologies among European automakers, and in September 2025 it began making Glysantin Electrified LECCs at Pudong for China's EV makers. Arteco, the Chevron and TotalEnergies joint venture, supplies coolant technology and finished fluids to many automakers, expanded its EV low-conductivity range to three products in April 2026 and offers bio-based and recycled versions through its ECO program. CCI Corporation of Japan supplies long-life P-OAT coolants to Japanese automakers.

Retail and Aftermarket Brand Owners

PFX Group owns Prestone, the best-known coolant brand in North America, plus Holts and KOST. Prestone sells EVX EV fluids, the Command heavy-duty line and the new OEM by Prestone range launched at AAPEX 2025. Old World Industries sells PEAK coolant and is the exclusive North American distributor of BASF Glysantin. Valvoline Global Operations, owned by Aramco, sells Zerex coolants, known for OEM-matched formulas for Asian and European cars.

Lubricant Majors and Regional Players

Shell plc, ExxonMobil and Castrol sell coolants alongside engine oil through their workshop networks, which gives them reach in Asia and the Middle East. FUCHS SE and LIQUI MOLY are strong in Europe, and FUCHS publishes guidance on which of its coolants the 2-EHA rule affects. Sinopec Lubricant Company leads China's domestic retail and fleet market. Atmus Filtration Technologies, through its Fleetguard brand, sells heavy-duty coolants and coolant test kits to truck fleets. Uno Minda entered the Indian market in April 2026 with a wide retail network.

What Separates Winners

Suppliers with LECC approvals in China, 2-EHA-free formulas in Europe and strong retail brands in North America are best placed. Scale also matters: PFX's 17 plants and Arteco's global supply network let them serve automakers on several continents from local sites.
