Tire Compounders, Electronics Potting and Rocket Propellants Push Liquid Polybutadiene Past USD 1.19 Billion
Radial Insights sizes the global liquid polybutadiene market at USD 708.50 Million in 2025, growing to USD 746.76 Million in 2026 and USD 1,198.80 Million by 2035 at a 5.40% CAGR.
Liquid polybutadiene is a low-molecular-weight polymer of butadiene, typically between about 1,000 and 10,000 grams per mole, that flows at room temperature. Producers sell it as non-functional resins with varying 1,2-vinyl content and as functionalized grades carrying hydroxyl, maleic anhydride, epoxy or acrylate groups. Compounders use it as a reactive plasticizer in tire treads and rubber goods, as a backbone for polyurethane adhesives, sealants and potting compounds, as a crosslinker in printed circuit board laminates and as the binder in composite solid rocket propellant, where hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is the standard. Our scope covers merchant sales of all these grades. Solid polybutadiene rubber and liquid polyisoprene are excluded and tracked separately.
Electrical and electronic encapsulation is the fastest growing application at a 6.70% CAGR from 2025 to 2035, because low-dielectric, water-resistant polybutadiene resins protect power modules, sensors and high-frequency circuit boards. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest growing region at 6.30% a year and holds 46.30% of 2025 value, reflecting tire, electronics and adhesive production in China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
Supply is concentrated in a handful of producers. Cray Valley, part of TotalEnergies, makes Ricon and Krasol resins in France, the United States and the Czech Republic. Evonik produces POLYVEST at two units in Marl, Germany, which switched to green electricity in July 2025. Nippon Soda, Kuraray, Synthomer and Idemitsu Kosan round out the leading group, while Chinese producers such as Zibo Qilong Chemical Industry focus on HTPB.
Tire makers are a growing customer group. Cray Valley began supplying bio-attributed Ricon to Continental's European tire plants in 2025, and Kuraray received Pirelli's Material Innovation award in October 2025 for its liquid rubber. As UNECE finalizes tire abrasion limits under UN Regulation 186, liquid polymers that bond into the rubber network rather than migrating out like process oils gain a technical argument in tread compounds.

HTPB and Maleinized Grades Outpace Non-Functional Resins
Non-functionalized liquid polybutadiene is the volume base, used as a reactive plasticizer and coating resin, and grows at 4.60% a year. HTPB grows fastest at 6.40% because it is the binder in most composite solid rocket motors and a soft segment in polyurethane sealants and potting compounds. Maleinized grades grow at 5.90% as adhesion promoters in tire cord bonding, metal-to-rubber bonding and electrical insulation, and epoxidized and other functionalized grades grow at 5.20%.
High 1,2-Vinyl Resins Gain 1.3 Points a Year Over 1,4-cis
High 1,4-cis liquid polybutadiene stays flexible at low temperature and suits sealants and rubber compounds, growing at 4.80% a year. High 1,2-vinyl grades grow at 6.10% because their pendant vinyl groups crosslink with peroxides into hard, low-loss networks used in high-frequency circuit laminates and in tire compounds that need a higher glass transition temperature for wet grip.
Electronics Encapsulation Leads at 6.70% While Coatings Trail
Electrical and electronic encapsulation grows fastest because power electronics, battery management systems and 5G and radar circuit boards need resins with low dielectric loss and very low water uptake. Propellants and defense follow at 6.20%, tire and rubber compounding at 5.30%, adhesives and sealants at 5.10%, and coatings and inks at 4.40%, where liquid polybutadiene competes with cheaper alkyd and acrylic binders.
Electronics and Defense End Uses Outgrow Construction
Electronics grows at 6.60% a year and aerospace and defense at 6.10%, supported by rising missile and space launch programs. Automotive, which includes tires and vehicle adhesives, grows at 5.20%, and construction, mainly sealants and waterproofing, at 4.30%.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Bio-Attributed and Low-Carbon Grades Reach Tire Plants
In September 2025, Cray Valley said it would supply Continental's European tire plants with Ricon liquid polybutadiene and Cleartack resins made with bio-feedstock from vegetable or used cooking oil processed at TotalEnergies' La Mede biorefinery, certified ISCC Plus under mass balance. Evonik switched both POLYVEST units in Marl to green electricity on July 1, 2025 and is releasing mass-balanced eCO grades. Tire makers told us renewable content claims now feature in supplier scorecards.
Tire Makers Recognize Liquid Rubber as an Innovation Lever
Kuraray won the Material Innovation award at Pirelli Supplier Day on October 24, 2025, one of seven winners among about 13,000 Pirelli suppliers, for its liquid rubber technology. Liquid polymers co-vulcanize with the tread compound, so they do not bleed out like aromatic or naphthenic oils, which helps maintain grip and wear over a tire's life.
Producers Plan Capacity Closer to US Customers
Kuraray reiterated in its May 2026 annual report that it intends to build a liquid rubber plant in the United States, part of a five-year capital program of about JPY 380 billion. A US plant would shorten supply chains for American tire, adhesive and electronics customers that now import from Japan and Europe.
Defense Buyers Secure HTPB Supply
The US Army Contracting Command awarded a firm-fixed-price HTPB supply contract worth USD 8,572,608 in February 2025, with completion set for February 2028. Solid rocket motor makers such as Northrop Grumman depend on HTPB binder, and governments are now treating it as a strategic material.
Restraints and Challenges
Butadiene Price Swings Pass Straight Into Resin Costs
Butadiene is a by-product of naphtha cracking, and lighter cracker feeds in North America and the Middle East reduce its availability. Producers told us butadiene price moves reach liquid polybutadiene contracts within one or two quarters, which makes it hard for compounders to hold fixed annual prices.
Small Market Size Limits Investment
At USD 708.50 Million, the liquid polybutadiene market is small for the chemical industry, and producers run batch or semi-batch units. New capacity therefore arrives in steps, and outages at a single site can tighten supply of specific grades for months.
Cheaper Plasticizers and Binders Compete Hard
In tires and rubber goods, liquid polybutadiene competes with process oils and resins that cost far less per kilogram. Tire makers adopt it mainly in premium treads where wear, grip and low migration justify the premium. In coatings, alkyd and acrylic binders win most cost-driven projects.
Regulation Adds Testing Costs for Tire Compounds
The UNECE abrasion test method, summarized by ETRMA, requires convoy testing over 8,000 kilometers. Every new tread compound containing liquid polybutadiene must be validated against these limits, adding time and cost before a material change reaches production.
Growth Drivers
Tire Abrasion Limits and Premium Tread Compounds
UN Regulation 186, whose technical work UNECE reported complete in September 2026, sets the first abrasion limits for passenger car tires. New type approvals must comply from June 30, 2028 and all approvals from June 30, 2030, with a tighter Stage 2 from 2033. Tire makers are reformulating treads to reduce wear without losing wet grip, and liquid polybutadiene helps because it vulcanizes into the network, lowers compound viscosity for better silica dispersion and does not migrate out over time. Continental's 2025 agreement with Cray Valley for bio-attributed Ricon and Pirelli's 2025 award to Kuraray show that both European premium tire makers treat liquid polymers as development materials. We estimate abrasion rules and premium tread development add about +1.0% of annual growth to the liquid polybutadiene market through 2035.
Power Electronics and High-Frequency Circuit Boards
Electric vehicle inverters, battery management systems, charging stations and data center power supplies all use potting and encapsulation compounds that must resist moisture and voltage stress. High 1,2-vinyl and hydroxyl-terminated liquid polybutadiene give low dielectric constants and very low water absorption, which is why Nippon Soda and Evonik market grades for laminates and electrical insulation. Circuit boards for 5G base stations and automotive radar need low-loss laminates, and polybutadiene-based thermoset resins are one of the established options. Asian laminate and electronics makers in Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and China drive most of this demand. This electronics pull is worth roughly 1.2 percentage points of the 5.40% CAGR, the largest single contribution, and explains the 6.70% growth of the encapsulation segment.
Defense Spending and Solid Rocket Motor Output
HTPB is the dominant binder in composite solid propellant for tactical missiles, interceptors and space launch boosters. Western governments have raised munitions budgets since 2022, and solid rocket motor makers including Northrop Grumman are expanding output. The US Army's February 2025 HTPB contract, worth USD 8.57 million over three years, illustrates how defense agencies are locking in binder supply. In China, Zibo Qilong Chemical Industry and other HTPB producers serve domestic aerospace programs. We attribute close to +0.7% of yearly market growth to propellant demand, concentrated in North America, Europe and APAC.
Opportunities
Bio-Based and Mass-Balanced Grades
Cray Valley and Evonik already sell ISCC Plus mass-balanced grades. Tire and adhesive buyers with 2030 renewable content targets told us they are willing to pay a modest premium for certified grades, which could reward producers that secure bio-feedstock early.
Battery Pack Sealants and Thermal Interface Materials
Polyurethane sealants and gap fillers based on HTPB combine flexibility, adhesion and moisture resistance. Battery pack makers in China and Europe are testing these systems for module sealing and vibration damping, a niche that could add tens of millions of dollars of demand by 2030.
Asia Pacific Holds 46.30% and Grows Fastest on Tire, Laminate and Adhesive Production
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for 46.30% of 2025 value, worth USD 328.04 million, and grows at a 6.30% CAGR to USD 604.30 million by 2035. China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan host the largest tire, circuit laminate and adhesive industries in the world. Nippon Soda, Kuraray and Idemitsu Kosan supply APAC customers from Japan, while Zibo Qilong Chemical Industry serves Chinese HTPB demand.
North America
North America holds 23.40% of 2025 value, or USD 165.79 million, and reaches USD 259.94 million by 2035 at a 4.60% CAGR. Defense propellants, aerospace sealants and electronics potting anchor North American demand. Cray Valley produces Ricon at Grand Junction, Colorado, and Kuraray plans a US liquid rubber plant, as restated in its May 2026 annual report.
Europe
Europe represents 22.10% of 2025 value, equal to USD 156.58 million, and grows at 4.30% a year to USD 238.55 million by 2035. Evonik's two POLYVEST units in Marl and Cray Valley's sites in Carling, France and Kralupy, Czech Republic supply European tire, adhesive and coatings customers. Continental began receiving bio-attributed Ricon at its European tire plants in 2025.
Latin America
Latin America accounts for 4.20% of 2025 value, around USD 29.76 million, and grows at a 5.10% CAGR to USD 48.93 million by 2035. Brazil and Mexico drive Latin American demand through tire production, automotive adhesives and construction sealants, with almost all supply imported.
Middle East
The Middle East holds 2.40% of 2025 value, worth USD 17.00 million, and grows at 5.60% a year to USD 29.32 million by 2035. Construction sealants and waterproofing in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, plus growing defense manufacturing, lift Middle East consumption.
Africa
Africa represents 1.60% of 2025 value, about USD 11.34 million, and reaches USD 19.92 million by 2035 at a 5.80% CAGR. South Africa and Morocco account for most African demand through tire plants, mining equipment sealants and automotive assembly.
