Neodymium Grades Lead a Polybutadiene Rubber Market Heading to USD 13.60 Billion by 2035

Valued at USD 9.10 Billion in 2025, the global polybutadiene rubber market is set to reach USD 9.47 Billion in 2026 and USD 13.60 Billion by 2035, growing at a 4.10% CAGR as tire makers lift output and shift to low-rolling-resistance treads.

Polybutadiene rubber (BR or PBR) is made by polymerizing butadiene with neodymium, cobalt, nickel or lithium catalysts. High-cis grades give tire treads and sidewalls their abrasion resistance, low heat build-up and crack resistance, and BR is the second largest synthetic rubber after styrene-butadiene rubber. Lower-cis and lithium grades also toughen high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) and ABS plastics, and BR goes into golf ball cores, shoe soles, belts and hoses. This study measures the value of solid BR sold by producers. It excludes liquid polybutadiene, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene used in propellants and coatings, and BR consumed captively inside the same company's tire plants where no market price applies.

Supply is shifting east. China's polybutadiene capacity reached 2.122 million tons per year at the end of 2025, according to Mysteel, while ARLANXEO announced in October 2025 that it intends to close its Port Jerome site in France. Prices swung sharply: China's statistics bureau recorded BR9000 at 10,137.5 yuan per ton in early December 2025 and 17,361.1 yuan in late March 2026 after butadiene spiked.

The fastest-growing segment is neodymium polybutadiene (Nd-BR) at a 5.60% CAGR, because its linear structure lowers rolling resistance and wear. Africa is the fastest-growing region at 5.30%, while Asia Pacific (APAC) adds the most value, about USD 3.07 Billion over the decade.

Global synthetic rubber demand of 16.77 million tons in 2025, forecast by the International Rubber Study Group to reach 18.69 million tons by 2032, frames the steady volume outlook behind our estimate.

Neodymium Catalysts Win New Tire Capacity

Neodymium polybutadiene grows at 5.60%, the fastest rate in the study. Nd-BR has very high cis content and a linear chain, which improves abrasion resistance and lowers rolling resistance in silica tread compounds. SIBUR raised its neodymium catalyst capacity by 28% in September 2025 to support up to 250,000 tons per year of Nd-BR. Lithium and low-cis grades grow at 3.70%, nickel grades at 3.40% and cobalt grades at 3.20% as older lines lose share in new tire specifications.

Tires Lead, Plastics Modification Follows

Tires remain the largest application and grow at 4.20%. Polymer modification for HIPS and ABS grows at 3.80%, helped by appliance and electronics housings in Asia. Golf balls and other industrial goods grow at 3.30%, and footwear trails at 3.10% because thermoplastic and foam soles keep taking share.

Treads Grow Faster Than Sidewalls

Treads grow at 4.50% as tire makers blend Nd-BR with solution SBR and silica to meet EU tire label and US fuel economy goals. Sidewalls grow at 3.90%, closely tied to tire unit volumes, and other components such as chafers and carcass compounds grow at 3.40%.

Truck and Bus Tires Use More BR per Unit

Truck and bus tires grow at 4.40%, ahead of passenger car and light truck tires at 4.00%, because larger tires carry more tread rubber and fleets demand long wear life. Two-wheeler, off-the-road and other tires grow at 4.30%, supported by motorcycle demand in India and Southeast Asia.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Western Capacity Is Being Cut While Chinese Capacity Grows

ARLANXEO announced in October 2025 that it intends to close its structurally loss-making Port Jerome site in France, which makes polybutadiene and styrene-butadiene rubber. In January 2026, Mysteel reported that China ended 2025 with 2.122 million tons per year of BR capacity and expects 670,000 tons of additions from 2026 to 2030. The center of polybutadiene supply is moving firmly to China and the rest of Asia.

Feedstock Shocks Drive Price Volatility

Asian butadiene jumped to USD 1,320 per ton CFR China on 3 March 2026, an 11-month high, after the US-Iran conflict disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Shandong butadiene hit 16,000 yuan per ton on 10 March 2026, the highest since 2017, and China's BR9000 price followed to 17,361.1 yuan per ton in late March.

Ownership Changes in the US Supply Base

Goodyear completed the sale of most of its chemical business, including plants in Houston and Beaumont, Texas, to an affiliate of Gemspring Capital on 31 October 2025, receiving about USD 580 Million in cash from a USD 650 Million deal. The change separates a major US synthetic rubber producer from its largest captive tire customer.

Certified Sustainable Grades Gain Ground

ARLANXEO's Orange, Texas site gained ISCC PLUS certification for Buna polybutadiene in March 2026, allowing mass-balance bio-circular or circular feedstock claims. Tire makers with recycled and renewable material targets are starting to specify such grades.

Restraints and Challenges

Butadiene Price Swings Squeeze Margins

China's statistics bureau shows how fast costs move: BR9000 traded at 10,137.5 yuan per ton in early December 2025, about 26% below its March 2025 level, before rebounding sharply in March 2026. Converters that cannot pass costs through quickly see margins swing from loss to profit within a quarter.

Overcapacity in China

China's capacity of more than 2.1 million tons per year far exceeds domestic tire demand growth, which ran at 1.72% in 2025. Low operating rates pressure prices and push Chinese exporters into Southeast Asia, India and Europe, where local producers face stiffer competition.

Plant Closures and Restructuring in Europe

ARLANXEO's planned Port Jerome closure and Versalis' shutdown of its Brindisi cracker in March 2025 reduce European polymer and C4 supply, making European tire makers more dependent on imports and longer supply chains.

Flat Tire Volumes in Mature Markets

US tire shipments reached 337.4 million units in 2025, a record but essentially flat from 337.3 million in 2024. Without volume growth, North American and European BR demand depends mainly on mix and grade upgrades, which limits Europe to a 2.40% CAGR.

Growth Drivers

Rising Global Tire Production

Polybutadiene follows tire output. China produced about 1.21 billion pneumatic tires in 2025, up 1.72%, and new export plants in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia continue to add lines. In the United States, the US Tire Manufacturers Association forecast record shipments of 337.4 million units in 2025. Global vehicle production reached 96.4 million units in 2025, up 3.9% according to OICA, feeding both original equipment and replacement demand. The International Rubber Study Group expects synthetic rubber demand to grow from 16.77 million tons in 2025 to 18.69 million tons in 2032. We attribute about 2.2 points of the 4.10% yearly growth to tire volume alone.

Low Rolling Resistance and EV Tire Specifications

EU tire labels, US fuel economy rules and electric vehicle range targets push tire makers toward tread compounds that combine solution SBR, silica and neodymium polybutadiene. Battery electric cars took 17.4% of EU new registrations in 2025, according to ACEA, and EV tires must handle higher torque and weight without fast wear. Kumho Petrochemical runs 60,000 tons per year of Nd-BR, SIBUR is supporting up to 250,000 tons, and ARLANXEO is expanding its Triunfo, Brazil plant by about 25%. This mix shift adds close to 0.9 points to annual value growth and explains why Nd-BR grows at 5.60%.

Recovering Plastics and Industrial Demand in Asia

HIPS and ABS producers use polybutadiene to add impact strength to appliance, electronics and automotive interior parts. Asian appliance output and growing car production in China and India keep this outlet expanding. Kumho Petrochemical's synthetic rubber sales rose 46.3% in the second quarter of 2026 to KRW 987 Billion as buyers secured supply. We estimate non-tire uses contribute roughly 0.6 points of yearly growth, led by polymer modification at 3.80%.

Opportunities

Capacity in Supply-Short Regions

Latin America, India and the Middle East import much of their polybutadiene. ARLANXEO's Triunfo expansion, due to start up in 2027, shows how producers can serve local tire plants and avoid long shipping routes exposed to disruption.

Mass-Balance and Bio-Circular Grades

ISCC PLUS certified grades, such as ARLANXEO's Buna from Orange, Texas, let tire makers report renewable or recycled content. Producers that can document feedstock origin and carbon footprint will be favored in tenders from European and Japanese tire groups.

Asia Pacific Accounts for Nearly Three-Fifths of Polybutadiene Rubber Demand and Most of the New Capacity

Polybutadiene demand sits where tires and plastics are made. Asia's share keeps rising as tire plants and new BR capacity cluster in China, Southeast Asia and India, while Europe faces closures and slow growth. Trade flows matter as much as local demand: Chinese producers with low operating rates export to Southeast Asia, India and Turkey, and the March 2026 disruption in Middle East shipping showed how quickly feedstock costs can change regional competitiveness. Our regional rates combine tire output forecasts, plastics demand and expected capacity additions in each region.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 58.60% share of the polybutadiene rubber market in 2025, worth about USD 5,332.6 Million. APAC revenue rises to about USD 8,401.0 Million by 2035 at a 4.65% CAGR. ARLANXEO plans to close its Port Jerome site in France, Versalis shut its Brindisi cracker in March 2025, and EU anti-dumping duties of 4.3% to 45.3% on Chinese car tires from July 2026 support local tire output.

Latin America

Latin America represented 6.10% of global revenue in 2025, about USD 555.1 Million. Latin American revenue reaches about USD 837.6 Million by 2035 at a 4.20% CAGR. ARLANXEO is adding about 25% to its Triunfo, Brazil polybutadiene plant for a 2027 start-up, serving tire plants in Brazil and Mexico.

Middle East

The Middle East held a 4.30% share in 2025, worth about USD 391.3 Million. Middle East revenue rises to about USD 631.3 Million by 2035, a 4.90% CAGR. Polybutadiene Rubber Supply Is Led by Asian State Groups and a Few Global Specialists

The polybutadiene rubber market combines very large Chinese state producers with global specialists that focus on high-performance neodymium grades. Integration into butadiene feedstock, catalyst know-how and long tire-maker approvals decide who wins.

Chinese State Producers

Sinopec and PetroChina are the two largest synthetic rubber producers in China, with total synthetic rubber capacity of 1,920,000 and 1,660,000 tons per year respectively in the 2025 IISRP ranking. Both run integrated crackers that supply butadiene and serve the domestic tire industry with nickel and neodymium grades. Zhejiang Chuanhua and other private firms add Nd-BR lines.

Global Specialists

ARLANXEO, owned by Saudi Aramco, sells Buna polybutadiene from plants in the United States, Brazil and Europe and is restructuring its European footprint. SIBUR makes neodymium grades at Nizhnekamsk and Voronezh. Synthos, which bought Trinseo's synthetic rubber business in 2021, and Versalis supply European tire makers, though Versalis is closing crackers.

Korean and Japanese Producers

Kumho Petrochemical is one of the world's largest synthetic rubber makers and runs 60,000 tons per year of Nd-BR alongside its own butadiene. LG Chem sells BR to Asian tire makers. Zeon, UBE Elastomer, Asahi Kasei and TSRC are known for specialty and low-cis grades used in tires and HIPS.

How Producers Compete

Tire makers approve each BR grade for specific compounds, and approvals can take a year or more, so incumbents hold an advantage. Producers compete on neodymium grade quality, consistency of Mooney viscosity, butadiene integration that cushions feedstock swings, and the ability to supply several regions. Chinese producers win on price and scale, while ARLANXEO, SIBUR, Kumho and the Japanese firms defend share with premium grades and long-term contracts.

Captive and Tire-Linked Producers

Firestone Polymers, part of Bridgestone, and the former Goodyear Chemical business, now owned by a Gemspring Capital affiliate, supply both their legacy tire customers and the merchant market. Reliance Industries serves Indian tire makers from Jamnagar.
