EV Aerodynamics Is Turning the Humble Hubcap Into a Range Component

Automotive wheel covers generated USD 1.74 Billion in 2025 worldwide, a figure Radial Insights expects to reach USD 1.82 Billion in 2026 and USD 2.80 Billion by 2035, compounding at 4.86% a year. The growth story has shifted from cheap plastic hubcaps for steel wheels to engineered aero covers that add range to electric vehicles.

For decades, wheel covers were a cost-saving item: a molded ABS shell that made a base-trim steel wheel look like an alloy. That business still makes up most of the volume, especially in Asia and Latin America. What has changed is that EV makers now treat the wheel as one of the largest sources of aerodynamic drag. Mercedes-Benz says each 0.01 reduction in drag coefficient adds about 2.5% to long-distance range, and its two-tone full cover for the electric CLA, launched in July 2025, is up to 15 drag points better than a conventional wheel. Tesla fitted aero covers as standard on the new Model Y in January 2025 and a full cover on the Model Y Standard in October 2025.

Our scope for the automotive wheel covers market includes full wheel covers and hubcaps, aero covers and aero inserts fitted over or into alloy wheels, center caps, and trim rings, sold to vehicle makers and through the aftermarket. We exclude the wheels themselves, wheel nuts and locks, tire covers for spare wheels, and active aero shutters built into the wheel structure.

Aero covers and inserts for alloy wheels form the fastest-growing product type at 11.60% a year, and battery electric vehicles are the fastest-growing propulsion segment at 12.30%. Asia Pacific (APAC) leads and also grows fastest at 5.60%, supported by China's 34.53 million vehicles produced in 2025.

Global production of 96.4 million vehicles in 2025, reported by OICA, and electric car sales above 20 million, reported by the IEA, set the volume base for both the traditional and aero sides of the market.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

EV Makers Are Fitting Aero Covers as Standard

Tesla launched the new Model Y in China in January 2025 with 19-inch wheels under aero covers as standard, and the car's CLTC range rose to 593 km for the rear-drive version from 554 km. In October 2025, Tesla launched the Model Y Standard at USD 39,990 with new 18-inch wheels under a full cover and a 321-mile rated range. Tesla sells replacement 18-inch aperture covers for USD 65 each, which shows the value now attached to a single cover.

Premium Brands Are Designing Covers Into the Wheel

In July 2025, Mercedes-Benz introduced a two-tone full cover for alloy wheels on the electric CLA, which has a drag coefficient from 0.21 and an EPA range of up to 374 miles. In September 2025, BMW's iX3, the first Neue Klasse model, launched with a drag coefficient of 0.24 and wheels in an aerodynamically optimized Air Performance specification. Toyota's 2026 bZ, announced in May 2025, uses 18-inch alloy wheels with plastic covers on the XLE grade.

Active Aero Around the Wheel Is Moving Into Patents and Concepts

The US Patent and Trademark Office published Rivian's application for an active aero wheel cover in March 2025, describing a cover that switches between open for brake cooling and closed for low drag. In February 2025, Hyundai Motor Group published details of its Active Air Skirt, which cut drag by 2.8% on a Genesis GV60 and added about 6 km of range. BORBET has shown an active aero wheel concept with thermally actuated vents.

Aftermarket Brands Target EV Owners

A new group of aftermarket brands, including Basenor, Yeslak and Teslaunch, sells aero covers and replacement covers for the Model Y and Model 3. In April 2026, RONAL added its R72 aerodynamic design wheel to its aftermarket range, showing that aero styling is also reaching wheel buyers outside the OEM channel.

Restraints and Challenges

Alloy Wheels Are Replacing Steel Wheels on Base Trims

The traditional hubcap depends on steel wheels, and many carmakers now fit alloy wheels even on entry trims in Europe and North America. Each switch removes a set of four covers from OEM demand. This is the main reason full wheel covers grow at only 2.90% a year in our forecast.

US Tariffs Raise Aftermarket Costs

The US imposed a 25% Section 232 tariff on many imported auto parts from May 3, 2025. Dorman Products, a major US aftermarket supplier, reported in its FY2025 annual filing that about 77% of its 2025 purchases came from non-US suppliers and about 38% from China, and that tariff-related price increases began in the third quarter of 2025. Aftermarket wheel cover brands that source from Asia face similar cost pressure.

Weaker US Efficiency Rules Reduce the Aero Push

NHTSA published a proposal in December 2025 that would cut the estimated model year 2031 fleet fuel economy average to about 34.5 mpg from about 50.4 mpg. Lower targets reduce the pressure on US carmakers to add aero parts to every model, although EV makers still use covers to raise range figures. Global EV adoption remains the key offset: the IEA reports electric car sales above 20 million in 2025, about 1 in 4 new cars (IEA Global EV Outlook 2026).

Styling Resistance and Brake Cooling Limit Fitment

Many buyers remove aero covers to show the alloy wheel beneath, and some covers restrict airflow to brakes under heavy use. Rivian's active cover patent and BORBET's vented concepts aim to solve the cooling issue, but they add cost and complexity that limit use on mass-market models.

Growth Drivers

Electric Vehicle Range Targets Make Every Drag Point Count

The IEA reports that electric car sales rose about 20% in 2025 to more than 20 million, roughly 1 in 4 new cars, with China near 55% of sales and Europe at 28%. For EV makers, range is the headline number, and wheels are among the largest sources of drag. Mercedes-Benz states that each 0.01 cut in drag coefficient adds about 2.5% to long-distance range, and its full cover for the CLA is up to 15 points better than a conventional wheel. Tesla's decision to fit aero covers as standard on the Model Y in January 2025 and a full cover on the Model Y Standard in October 2025 shows how volume EV makers now specify covers from the start. We estimate EV-driven aero cover demand adds about +2.2% to the market's annual growth through 2035, the largest single contribution. Suppliers with molding, painting and clip-retention know-how, such as BORBET and RONAL Group, are best placed to win these programs.

Rising Vehicle Output in Asia Supports the Volume Base

OICA reported global vehicle production of 96.4 million in 2025, up 3.9% from 92.7 million, with China at 34.53 million and Asia Pacific above 59 million, more than 61% of the total. Entry-level vehicles in China, India, Southeast Asia and Latin America still use steel wheels with plastic covers on many trims, keeping hubcap demand steady. Chinese EV brands also adopt aero inserts on export models. Higher output in Asia contributes roughly +1.1% of yearly CAGR in our model, with Hyundai Mobis and Chinese molders gaining from local OEM programs.

An Aging US Fleet Sustains Replacement Sales

S&P Global Mobility reported in May 2025 that the average US light vehicle is 12.8 years old, with cars at 14.5 years, across about 289 million vehicles. Older vehicles lose hubcaps to potholes, curbs and theft, and owners replace them through retail and online channels. Brands such as Coast to Coast International, Pilot Automotive and Dorman Products serve this demand through auto parts stores and mass retailers. The replacement cycle supports about +0.7 percentage points of annual growth, even as new-vehicle fitment shifts to alloys.

Opportunities

Commercial Vehicle Aero Covers for Fuel Savings

Maxion Wheels showed a truck aero wheel cover concept in 2019, and fleets running long-haul trucks are looking at any part that cuts fuel use. As truck makers in Europe face CO2 targets, aero covers for heavy commercial vehicles offer a growth niche.

Personalized and Replaceable EV Covers

Covers are cheaper to change than wheels, so EV owners can restyle a car for a fraction of the cost of new rims. OEM accessory stores and aftermarket brands can sell color, finish and pattern variants, as Tesla does with replacement covers at USD 65 each.

Asia Pacific Accounts for 44.20% of Demand and Grows Fastest on China's Vehicle Output

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 44.20% of the automotive wheel covers market in 2025, worth USD 769.08 Million. APAC reaches USD 1,326.21 Million by 2035 at a 5.60% CAGR, the fastest-growing region. China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025 and accounts for nearly 55% of global electric car sales, giving APAC both the largest steel-wheel hubcap base and the largest pool of EVs with aero covers.

Europe

Europe produced 17.2 million vehicles in 2025, down 0.8%, and EU CO2 targets 15% below 2021 levels for 2025 to 2029 push European carmakers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW toward aero wheel designs.

North America

North America represents 21.30% of the market, or USD 370.62 Million in 2025, and expands at 4.00% a year to USD 548.61 Million by 2035. The US built 10.24 million vehicles in 2025, and a light-vehicle parc of about 289 million with an average age of 12.8 years sustains replacement hubcap sales in North America through retail chains and online stores.

Latin America

Latin America has a 6.70% share, worth USD 116.58 Million in 2025, and grows at 5.00% a year to USD 189.90 Million by 2035. Brazil and Mexico produce many compact cars on steel wheels with plastic covers, which keeps Latin America among the heaviest users of traditional hubcaps.

Middle East

The Middle East holds 3.10% of the market, valued at USD 53.94 Million in 2025, and grows at 4.80% a year to USD 86.20 Million by 2035. Fleet and taxi vehicles on steel wheels drive cover replacement in the Middle East, while rising EV imports in the UAE and Saudi Arabia add aero cover demand.

Africa

Africa accounts for 2.10% of revenue, or USD 36.54 Million in 2025, and grows at 5.70% a year to USD 63.61 Million by 2035. South Africa and Morocco host vehicle assembly plants, and Africa's large used-vehicle fleet creates steady demand for low-cost replacement covers.
