Heated, Sensing and Steer-by-Wire Wheels Lift Steering Wheel Value Faster Than Vehicle Output
Every one of the roughly 90 million light vehicles built in 2025 left the line with a steering wheel, and Radial Insights values the global Automotive Steering Wheels Market at USD 13.48 Billion in 2025, USD 14.10 Billion in 2026 and USD 21.18 Billion by 2035, a 4.62% CAGR.
Value grows faster than unit volume because the wheel has become an electronic module. A basic polyurethane rim is being replaced by leather or vegan-leather rims with heating mats, capacitive hands-on detection, haptic switches and, in a small but fast-rising group of vehicles, by yokes and retractable wheels for steer-by-wire and autonomous driving. Autoliv, which made 21 million steering wheels in 2025, expects rising demand for higher-value wheels with leather and integrated functions.
Our scope covers complete steering wheel assemblies, including armature, rim, cover, switch modules, heating elements and sensing mats, sold to automakers and the aftermarket for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks. We exclude the driver airbag module, the steering column, steering gear and steer-by-wire actuators, which we track separately.
The fastest-growing form factor is the yoke and retractable wheel segment at an 18.50% CAGR from a small base, and the fastest-growing technology is hands-on detection at 8.10%. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at 5.15% a year and the largest, with a 52.30% share, led by Chinese EV brands that fit heated, multifunction wheels as standard.
The Automotive Steering Wheels Market is concentrated among safety suppliers, because the wheel carries the driver airbag. Autoliv reports a combined airbag and steering wheel market share of about 44%, and ZF Lifetec, Joyson Safety Systems and Toyoda Gosei hold most of the rest.

Synthetic and Vegan Leather Outpace Real Leather at 6.20%
Leather remains the premium standard and grows at 4.10%, but synthetic and vegan leather rims grow faster at 6.20%. Chinese EV brands and several European makers now market animal-free interiors, and these materials hold up well with integrated heating mats. Polyurethane rims, common on entry vehicles and trucks, grow just 2.40% as even budget models move to wrapped rims.
Hands-On Detection Is the Fastest-Growing Technology at 8.10%
Capacitive sensing mats in the rim tell driver-assistance systems whether the driver is holding the wheel, replacing torque-based detection. As hands-on and hands-off assistance features spread to mass-market cars, this content grows at 8.10% a year. Heated wheels grow at 6.45%, boosted by EVs, where heating the wheel and seat uses far less battery energy than heating cabin air. Standard wheels without these features grow only 2.30%.
Yokes and Retractable Wheels Grow at 18.50% From a Small Base
Round wheels remain more than nine in ten units and grow at 3.70%. Flat-bottom and D-shaped wheels grow at 6.30% as sporty styling spreads to SUVs. The yoke and retractable segment grows at 18.50% because steer-by-wire removes the mechanical link: the Lexus RZ brought a yoke to European roads from Q3 2025, and the Autoliv and Tensor foldable wheel announced in January 2026 targets volume production in the second half of 2026.
Passenger Cars Lead Vehicle Types at 4.90%
Passenger cars carry nearly all heated, sensing and new-shape wheels, so they grow at 4.90%. Light commercial vehicles grow at 3.80% as vans gain driver-assistance features. Heavy commercial vehicles grow at 3.20%, with multifunction wheels for fleet telematics the main upgrade.
OEM Supply Grows at 4.75%, Ahead of the Aftermarket at 3.10%

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Retractable Wheels Prepare Cabins for Level 4 Driving
On 5 January 2026, Autoliv and Tensor introduced what they call the world's first foldable steering wheel for autonomous driving. The wheel supports manual driving and retracts in Level 4 mode, with an instrument panel airbag taking over protection. Tensor's Robocar is expected to be ready for volume production in the second half of 2026 for the US, EU and Middle East. Gasgoo reported in January 2026 that Chinese companies including Dongfeng Nissan, SAIC, Chery, NIO, Joyson Safety and Yanfeng have filed dozens of patents on retractable or concealable wheels since 2021.
Steer-by-Wire Opens the Door to Yokes
Lexus announced the refreshed RZ 550e F Sport with steer-by-wire and a steering yoke on 12 March 2025, the first European deployment of the technology after rules changed to allow it on public roads. Removing the steering shaft frees the wheel's shape and position, which is why the yoke and retractable segment grows at 18.50% in our model.
Chinese Supply Bases Are Scaling Fast
Joyson Electronics' Hefei plant rolled off its 1-millionth steering wheel in July 2025, a heated wheel for the Leapmotor B01, only about two years after the plant made its first wheel in 2023. Joyson supplies safety systems for Leapmotor's C10, C16, B10, B01 and C11 models, a sign of how quickly Chinese EV programs are pulling wheel volume into Asia Pacific.
Nearshore Plants Serve European Programs
ZF Lifetec opened an 8,000 square meter steering wheel plant in the Tanger Med zone in Morocco on 2 July 2025, with about 350 employees. Morocco offers lower labor costs and short shipping to Spanish, French and German vehicle plants, and the move shows how suppliers are shifting labor-heavy rim wrapping and stitching closer to European demand.
Restraints and Challenges
Steering Wheels Are Safety Parts With Long Qualification
Because the wheel holds the driver airbag, any new material or shape must pass crash and deployment testing. Autoliv notes in its 2025 annual report on Form 10-K (Autoliv 2025 Form 10-K) that airbag and steering wheel products make up about 68% of its sales, which reflects how closely the two are engineered together. Long validation slows adoption of new form factors.
Flat Vehicle Production Caps Unit Growth
Global light vehicle production was just over 90 million units in 2025 and is forecast to approach only 92 million by 2028. Unit growth below 1% a year means nearly all market expansion must come from higher content per wheel rather than more wheels.
Yoke Acceptance Is Not Yet Proven
Reviews of the Lexus RZ yoke show that some drivers find the feel unnatural, while supporters cite personalization. If buyers resist, automakers may keep yokes to niche trims, which would hold the yoke and retractable segment closer to the low end of our range.
Cost Pressure From Chinese Suppliers
Fast-growing Chinese suppliers such as Joyson and Yanfeng price aggressively for domestic EV programs. Global suppliers must match those prices on Chinese platforms, which squeezes margins even as content per wheel rises. Automotive News ranked Joyson 37th among global parts suppliers in 2025.
Growth Drivers
EV Thermal Efficiency Makes Heated Wheels Standard
Electric vehicles lose range when they heat cabin air, so automakers fit heated wheels and seats that warm the driver directly with far less energy. Joyson's 1-millionth Hefei wheel, built in July 2025 for the Leapmotor B01, is a heated unit, which shows how heating has moved from luxury trims to mainstream Chinese EVs. Heated wheels grow at 6.45% a year in our model. Each heated rim adds a heating mat, wiring and a control function, lifting wheel value by a meaningful amount over a plain leather rim. We estimate EV-led heating adoption adds about +1.1% of annual growth to the Automotive Steering Wheels Market through 2035.
Driver Assistance Needs Hands-On Detection
Hands-on and hands-off driving assistance systems must know whether the driver is holding the wheel. Capacitive sensing mats in the rim do this more reliably than torque sensing, and automakers including Toyota, Ford and Chinese EV makers are rolling such systems across more models. The NVIDIA and Uber plan announced in October 2025 for up to 100,000 Level 4 robotaxis from 2027 shows how far automation is moving, but the near-term volume lies in Level 2 assistance on private cars. Hands-on detection grows at 8.10% a year, and we credit it with close to 0.9 points of yearly market growth, because sensing content is added to wheels already being built.
Steer-by-Wire and Autonomy Create New Wheel Designs
Steer-by-wire separates the wheel from the steering rack, allowing yokes, adjustable ratios and retractable designs. The Lexus RZ launched with a yoke in Europe in Q3 2025, Tesla uses steer-by-wire on the Cybertruck, and the Autoliv and Tensor foldable wheel targets production from the second half of 2026. A retractable wheel needs motors, auto-centering and redundant controls, and Gasgoo estimates the mechanism alone could cost thousands of yuan. These designs add roughly 0.6 points a year to the market's CAGR by 2035, and more if robotaxi programs scale faster than we assume.
Opportunities
Retractable Wheels for Premium Private Cars
Gasgoo expects high-end private cars to adopt retractable wheels first, while commercial robotaxis go wheel-free. Suppliers that combine wheel, airbag and actuator in one module can capture far more value per vehicle than with a conventional wheel.
Smart Surfaces and Haptic Controls
Touch-sensitive and haptic switch zones on the wheel spokes are replacing mechanical buttons. Autoliv expects demand for wheels with additional integrated functions to rise, and suppliers that integrate sensing, heating and switches in one assembly can raise content per wheel without adding parts for the automaker.
Asia Pacific Holds 52.30% of Steering Wheel Value and Grows Fastest
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 52.30% share of the Automotive Steering Wheels Market in 2025, worth USD 7.05 Billion. The APAC market reaches USD 11.65 Billion by 2035 at a 5.15% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China leads, and Joyson's Hefei plant alone built 1 million wheels between 2023 and July 2025.
