Electrified Powertrains Are Rewriting Where Automotive Sealing Revenue Comes From
Radial Insights values the global automotive seals and gaskets market at USD 16.42 billion in 2025, rising to USD 17.01 billion in 2026 and USD 23.43 billion by 2035 at a 3.62% CAGR. Growth is modest in headline terms, but the mix underneath it is changing faster than at any point in the last two decades.
Our scope covers static and dynamic sealing parts fitted to passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks: cylinder head and exhaust gaskets, radial shaft and oil seals, O-rings and molded seals, and the newer battery pack, inverter and e-drive seals. We count both factory fitment and replacement sales at manufacturer selling prices. Body weatherstrips, glass run channels, anti-vibration mounts and hoses sit outside this study and are tracked in separate Radial Insights reports.
Vehicle output supplies the base load. OICA counted 96.4 million motor vehicles built worldwide in 2025, up 3.9% on 92.7 million in 2024, with China alone producing 34.53 million units. Every one of those vehicles carries dozens of seals and gaskets, from valve stems and crankshaft lips to transmission and wheel-end seals.
The growth engine is electrification. The International Energy Agency reports that electric car sales passed 20 million in 2025, roughly one in four new cars, and expects about 23 million in 2026. Battery pack and e-drive seals are therefore the fastest-growing product segment, with an expected CAGR of 11.85% through 2035, while cylinder head gaskets grow at only 1.35% as engine counts plateau.
Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest and the fastest-growing region, expanding at 4.45% a year on the strength of Chinese and Indian vehicle production and the localization of sealing plants by Japanese, German and Chinese suppliers. Europe grows slowest at 2.30%, held back by flat vehicle output and the cost of the proposed EU PFAS restriction.

| Propulsion Type | Battery Electric | 10.20% |
| Sales Channel | OEM | 3.30% |
| Sales Channel | Aftermarket | 4.25% |
Product Type: Shaft Seals Lead on Volume, Battery Seals Lead on Growth
Radial shaft and oil seals remain the largest product group because every driveline, whether combustion or electric, needs rotating shaft seals at the crank, gearbox input and output, and wheel ends. Their 3.40% CAGR tracks vehicle output plus a premium for high-speed e-motor seals that run above 20,000 rpm. Battery pack and e-drive seals grow at 11.85% from a smaller base as pack lids, cell-to-pack housings, connector interfaces and inverter covers all need gaskets that hold IP67 or IP6K9K ratings for the life of the car. Cylinder head gaskets grow at just 1.35% since new engine programs are scarce, and their sales lean increasingly on repair demand.
Material: Silicone and PTFE Gain Where Heat and Media Change
Silicone grows at 6.20% because it is the default choice for pack lid gaskets and form-in-place seals that must stay flexible from minus 40 to above 150 degrees Celsius. PTFE and engineered thermoplastics grow at 5.40% on demand for low-friction e-axle seals. Multi-layer steel grows at only 1.55% since it is tied to head and exhaust gaskets. Fluoroelastomers hold a 3.10% rate: demand from turbocharged engines and hydrogen systems is real, but the EU PFAS process adds uncertainty for European buyers.
Application: Thermal Management Becomes the Second Growth Pole
Battery and thermal management applications expand at 10.70%, the fastest application rate, because electric vehicles route coolant through packs, chillers and power electronics with many more connectors than a radiator loop. Transmission and driveline sealing grows at 3.25% as e-axles add seal content per vehicle. Engine sealing grows at 1.20% and exhaust and aftertreatment at 1.90%, both supported by Euro 7 and China 6b durability rules rather than by new engine volumes.
Propulsion Type: Hybrids Keep Combustion Seal Demand Alive
Battery electric vehicles post a 10.20% CAGR, but hybrid electric vehicles at 7.90% matter just as much to suppliers because a hybrid carries both a full engine seal set and a battery and e-motor seal set. Internal combustion vehicles still form the largest installed base yet grow at only 0.85% as global sales shift.
Sales Channel: Replacement Demand Outpaces Factory Fitment
The aftermarket grows at 4.25% against 3.30% for OEM supply. An aging car parc, higher average engine stress from downsized turbo engines and the arrival of the first large wave of out-of-warranty electric vehicles all push repair shops to buy more sealing kits, a trend visible in ElringKlinger's 2025 aftermarket results.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Sealing Makers Are Building Electric Vehicle Repair Ranges
In September 2026, ElringKlinger used Automechanika 2026 to widen its Elring aftermarket range, adding cylinder head gaskets for machined engines alongside sealing and repair solutions for e-drive units, batteries, inverters and high-voltage systems. The move signals that independent workshops now expect to open battery packs and reseal them rather than replace whole modules. Radial Insights expects pack-repair seal kits to become a standard aftermarket line by 2028.
Suppliers Are Reorganizing Around Sealing as a Stand-Alone Business
In March 2026, SKF restated its segments so that automotive sealing, worth about SEK 2.4 billion of 2025 sales, sits in its industrial segment, while the rest of its automotive unit is prepared for a separate listing in the fourth quarter of 2026. Freudenberg went the other way on scope: on 1 January 2026 it dissolved its e-Power Systems group and moved its hydrogen components business into Freudenberg Sealing Technologies. Both moves treat seals as a higher-margin core worth protecting.
PFAS-Free Materials Move From Lab to Launch
In April 2025, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies released an elastomer O-ring material for battery cells that it says cuts leakage by a factor of ten compared with thermoplastic seals and offers a PFAS-free alternative to some FKM parts. Buyers in Europe now ask for a PFAS-free option in requests for quotation even where the final EU rule has not been adopted.
China Becomes the Swing Market for Global Sealing Suppliers
Datwyler reported in February 2026 that China now accounts for more than a third of its automotive sales, and Cooper Standard noted that 51% of its 2025 new business awards came from Chinese automakers. OICA data show China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025. Western sealing firms are adding local compounding and molding lines to qualify for Chinese electric vehicle programs that run on 18 to 24 month development cycles.
Restraints and Challenges
The EU PFAS Restriction Puts Fluoroelastomer Seals Under Review
On 20 August 2025, the European Chemicals Agency published its updated PFAS restriction proposal, which assessed sealing applications for the first time as a separate sector. FKM and PTFE seals protect fuel, turbo and transmission systems where few substitutes match their heat and chemical resistance. SEAC's draft opinion went to consultation from 26 March to 25 May 2026, with a final opinion due by the end of 2026, so European buyers face at least another year of uncertainty on requalification costs.
Flat Engine Output Caps Gasket Volumes
Combustion engine production is past its peak. S&P Global Mobility expected Europe to build about 16.9 million light vehicles in 2025 and North America about 15.24 million, levels still below 2019. Cylinder head and exhaust gasket makers must therefore win share or price to grow, which squeezes margins at smaller suppliers.
Automaker Cost Pressure Limits Price Pass-Through
Trelleborg reported weaker automotive deliveries in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2025, and NOK's group sales fell 3.7% in the year to March 2026 even as its seal unit grew. Automakers facing tariffs and electric vehicle price wars push annual price-downs of 1% to 3% onto tier suppliers, which slows revenue growth relative to volume.
Qualification Cycles Slow the Switch to New Materials
A new seal compound for a battery pack or e-axle can need 18 to 36 months of validation, including thermal cycling, fluid aging and ingress tests. That delay means material innovations such as PFAS-free elastomers enter volume production slowly, and suppliers must fund parallel development for combustion and electric programs.
Growth Drivers
Electric Vehicle Battery Packs Add New Seal Content per Vehicle
The International Energy Agency counts more than 20 million electric cars sold in 2025, a 20% rise, and projects about 23 million in 2026, close to 30% of global car sales. Each battery electric vehicle needs a pack lid gasket that can run several meters in length, cell venting seals, connector and busbar seals, and coolant plate O-rings. Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has built a product line around cell sealing, and ElringKlinger lifted e-mobility revenue 40.8% to EUR 144 million in 2025. Radial Insights estimates that battery and e-drive sealing adds about +1.1% of annual growth to the overall automotive seals and gaskets market through 2035, the single biggest contribution of any driver.
Aging Fleets Lift Replacement Gasket and Seal Demand
Average vehicle age keeps rising in the United States, Europe and Japan as new car prices climb, and older vehicles need head gasket, valve cover and crankshaft seal replacements more often. ElringKlinger's aftermarket revenue rose 12.5% to EUR 378.2 million in 2025 while its total revenue fell to EUR 1,640.9 million, showing how repair demand can offset weaker original equipment calls. Brands such as Elring, Victor Reinz from Dana, Fel-Pro from Tenneco and Corteco from Freudenberg compete for this business through distributor catalogs. We expect replacement demand to contribute roughly 0.6 percentage points of the market's yearly growth over the forecast period.
Hybrid and Emissions Rules Raise Seal Specifications
Euro 7, adopted in 2024 and phasing in for new types from late 2026, extends emissions durability requirements to 200,000 km for light vehicles, while China 6b and US EPA rules set similar long-life targets. Longer durability means higher-grade gaskets and seals with tighter leak limits at the exhaust manifold, turbocharger and crankcase ventilation points. Hybrid vehicles add both a combustion and an electric seal set. NOK's seal segment lifted operating income 6.3% to JPY 27.9 billion in the year to March 2026, helped by richer product mix. This specification upgrade adds an estimated +0.4% a year to market value growth.
Opportunities
Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Sealing
Freudenberg moved its hydrogen components business into Freudenberg Sealing Technologies in January 2026, placing bipolar plate gaskets and tank valve seals inside its core sealing unit. Fuel cell trucks and buses in China, Korea and Europe need gaskets that resist hydrogen permeation and deionized coolant, and early volumes give suppliers a chance to set standards.
Formed-in-Place and Liquid Gaskets for Pack Assembly
Henkel's Loctite formed-in-place and cured-in-place products show how dispensed sealants can replace die-cut gaskets on battery housings and e-motor covers. Robotic dispensing cuts inventory and suits the large, irregular joints of skateboard platforms, opening room for chemical companies and seal molders to partner with automakers on line integration.
Asia Pacific Holds Nearly Half of Global Sealing Demand and Grows Fastest
Regional growth in the automotive seals and gaskets market follows vehicle production and electric vehicle adoption. Asia Pacific combines both, while Europe and North America lean on aftermarket and premium content.
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 46.20% share of the 2025 market, worth USD 7.59 billion, and is forecast to reach USD 11.72 billion by 2035 at a 4.45% CAGR. China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025 according to OICA, and Chinese automakers lead global electric vehicle output. NOK, Sumitomo Riko and Freudenberg all run large molding plants across China, Japan, Thailand and India, and Indian sealing demand benefits from two-wheeler and passenger car growth.
North America
North America accounts for 20.40% of 2025 revenue, or USD 3.35 billion, and should reach USD 4.44 billion by 2035, a 2.85% CAGR. S&P Global Mobility put North American light vehicle production at about 15.24 million units in 2025. Pickup trucks and large SUVs carry high seal content, and the region's large repair channel supports Fel-Pro, Victor Reinz and Parker Hannifin's sealing products.
Europe
Europe represents 23.80% of 2025 sales, valued at USD 3.91 billion, rising to USD 4.91 billion in 2035 at 2.30% a year. European light vehicle production of about 16.9 million units in 2025 remains below pre-pandemic levels. ElringKlinger, Freudenberg, Trelleborg and Datwyler are headquartered in Europe, where the PFAS restriction debate and Euro 7 rules shape material choices.
Latin America
Latin America holds a 4.60% share, equal to USD 0.76 billion in 2025, and is expected to reach USD 1.11 billion by 2035 at a 3.95% CAGR. Brazil and Mexico anchor demand; Mexico's export assembly plants supply North American automakers, while Brazil's flex-fuel engines need ethanol-resistant fuel system seals.
Middle East
The Middle East holds 2.90% of global value, or USD 0.48 billion in 2025, and should grow to USD 0.72 billion by 2035 at a 4.15% CAGR. High ambient temperatures shorten elastomer life and lift replacement frequency, and new assembly projects in Saudi Arabia and Turkey add OEM demand.
Africa
Africa represents 2.10% of 2025 revenue, about USD 0.34 billion, and is forecast to reach USD 0.54 billion by 2035 at 4.55% a year. Demand is mainly aftermarket, served through South Africa, Morocco and Egypt, where vehicle assembly and component plants supply both domestic and export markets.
