Chinese capacity and metallocene grades carry EPDM rubber to USD 7.44 billion by 2035

Ethylene propylene diene monomer sales reached USD 4.86 Billion in 2025, and Radial Insights forecasts the global EPDM Rubber market at USD 5.07 Billion in 2026 and USD 7.44 Billion in 2035, a 4.35% CAGR. The growth path is steady rather than fast, because the polymer's main outlets, vehicle seals and building profiles, track car output and construction activity.

Our EPDM Rubber market estimate covers solid, friable, pelletized and liquid EPDM sold by polymer producers to compounders, parts makers and plastics processers, valued at producer selling prices. It includes all catalyst types and all diene contents. We exclude EPM copolymers without a diene, thermoplastic vulcanizates sold as finished compounds, and the value added by compounders and molders downstream.

The automotive industry is the anchor. OICA counted 96.4 million vehicles built worldwide in 2025, up 3.9%, and each car carries several kilograms of EPDM in door and window seals, hoses and under-hood parts. In China alone, automotive parts used about 223,000 tonnes of EPDM in 2025, while domestic output rose to 326,300 tonnes from 278,300 tonnes in 2021.

Metallocene catalyst technology is the fastest-growing segment at a 5.60% CAGR, because grades such as Dow's Nordel IP and ARLANXEO's Keltan ACE allow faster extrusion and tighter property control. Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest and the fastest-growing region, holding a 46.80% share in 2025 and growing at 5.15% a year.

Supply is moving east. Kumho Polychem lifted capacity to 310,000 tonnes a year in May 2025, PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical started a 40,000 tonne unit in July 2025, and at least three more Chinese plants are licensed for start-up in 2027 and 2028, which will shape pricing in the EPDM Rubber market for the rest of the decade.

Gas-phase capacity grows fastest from a small base

Solution Polymerization is the dominant process, used by ARLANXEO, ExxonMobil, Mitsui Chemicals and Kumho Polychem, and grows at 4.10% as most new Chinese capacity uses solution technology licensed from firms such as ETIC. Slurry (Suspension) Polymerization, a route used by fewer producers, grows more slowly at 3.60%. Gas-Phase Polymerization grows at 4.90% because it yields granular product that compounders can feed continuously.

Metallocene catalysts take share from Ziegler-Natta

Ziegler-Natta grades still form most installed capacity, but we model a 3.70% CAGR as older lines age. Metallocene grades grow at 5.60%: Dow's Nordel IP is made this way, and ARLANXEO's Keltan ACE technology offers similar control, giving extruders faster line speeds for automotive seals.

Friable and pelletized forms win in continuous mixing

Solid Bales grow at 3.90%, still the default for internal mixers. Friable Bales and Pellets grow at 5.00% because they suit polymer modification and continuous compounding. Liquid EPDM, sold by Lion Elastomers as Trilene, grows at 4.80% in sealants, coatings and as a processing aid.

Wire and cable and automotive seals lead application growth

Automotive Weatherstrips and Seals grow at 4.70% as electric vehicles demand quieter cabins and more sealing length. Automotive Hoses and Belts grow at 4.20%, slowed by fewer engine hoses in battery electric cars. Building and Construction Profiles and Roofing grows at 4.00%. Wire and Cable is the fastest application at 5.30%, driven by grid and renewable energy cabling. Plastic and Lubricant Modification grows at 4.40%, helped by polypropylene compounds for bumpers and viscosity modifiers for engine oils. Tires, Tubes and Other Rubber Goods, where EPDM is a minor blend partner in sidewall compounds and inner tubes, grows at 3.50%, the slowest application in our model.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Korean and Chinese producers are adding most new capacity

Kumho Polychem held a completion ceremony for its fifth EPDM line at Yeosu in May 2025, adding 70,000 tonnes and lifting capacity to 310,000 tonnes a year. PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical started a 40,000 tonne a year unit in July 2025. Mysteel expects China's capacity to reach about 485,000 tonnes a year in 2026, with output near 343,900 tonnes, up 5.87%.

Chinese companies are licensing technology and buying plants

In December 2025 Shandong Dawn Polymer's board approved buying 80% of Ningbo SK Synthetic Rubber, which runs 50,000 tonnes a year of EPDM capacity, for Yuan516 million. In August 2026 Japanese engineering firm ETIC licensed its EPDM process to Guoneng Yulin Chemical in Shaanxi, adding to earlier licences for Shaanxi Yuneng and Shandong Dawn. Lihuayi (Lijin) Engineering Plastics is building a 50,000 tonne plant in Dongying for Yuan2.28 billion, planned for December 2027.

Middle East supply is being consolidated under Western marketers

ARLANXEO became exclusive marketer of the EPDM made by Rabigh Refining and Petrochemical in February 2026, selling it as Keltan KSA, after Aramco became Petro Rabigh's majority shareholder in 2025. Saudi Arabia supplied 66,700 tonnes, or 40%, of China's EPDM imports in 2024.

Trade defense keeps markets separated

China's commerce ministry opened an expiry review of its anti-dumping duties on EPDM from the US, EU and South Korea in December 2025, keeping rates such as 222% for Dow and 12.5% for Kumho Polychem in place while the 12-month review runs. US-origin EPDM made up only 0.65% of China's imports in January to November 2025.

Restraints and Challenges

Chinese overcapacity threatens margins

China's operating rate rose to about 78.6% in 2025, but planned plants from Guoneng Yulin, Shaanxi Yuneng, Shandong Dawn and Lihuayi could add well over 150,000 tonnes a year by 2028. When that capacity arrives, export prices from Korea, Saudi Arabia and Europe will come under pressure.

Weak results at some producers

Lotte Chemical booked a KRW18.8 billion impairment on its Lotte Versalis Elastomers joint venture in August 2025, after the venture posted a KRW4.1 billion net loss on KRW182.4 billion of first-half revenue. Losses of this kind delay investment and can lead to line closures.

Vehicle production in mature regions is flat

OICA data show European vehicle output fell 0.8% to 17.2 million in 2025 and production in the Americas fell 2.1% to 18.74 million, as reported in its 2025 production release. Seal and hose demand in these regions follows that trend.

Trade barriers and feedstock costs

Anti-dumping duties above 200% shut US producers out of China, and ethylene, propylene and ENB diene costs swing with crude oil and naphtha. Producers that cannot pass on cost spikes see margins squeezed. ARLANXEO's Keltan KSA agreement shows how producers are using marketing deals to secure lower-cost supply.

Growth Drivers

Vehicle output in Asia and electric vehicle sealing needs

World vehicle production rose 3.9% to 96.4 million in 2025, according to OICA, and China built 34.53 million vehicles, including 16.626 million new-energy vehicles, up 29%. Electric vehicles need more sealing length and better acoustic seals because there is no engine noise to mask wind and road sound, and battery packs need weather-resistant gaskets. Chinese automotive parts makers used about 223,000 tonnes of EPDM in 2025, the single largest end use in the world's largest market, and parts suppliers serving export programs from China, Korea and Japan need qualified grades from producers such as Kumho Polychem and Mitsui Chemicals. Even in Europe, where output slipped in 2025, the rising share of electric models raises EPDM content per car. We estimate that automotive demand adds about 1.7 percentage points to the 4.35% CAGR, concentrated in Asia Pacific.

Grid, renewable and building investment lifts cable and profile demand

EPDM insulation and jacketing are standard in medium-voltage cable, wind turbine cabling and solar installations because the polymer resists ozone, heat and water. Window and door profiles and single-ply roofing membranes use EPDM for weather resistance over decades. Mysteel expects Chinese consumption to reach about 479,300 tonnes in 2026, leaving roughly 135,000 tonnes to be met by imports from Kumho Polychem, Petro Rabigh and others. Construction demand is steadier than automotive demand because roofing and window replacement cycles continue even when new building slows, and cable demand is tied to multi-year utility budgets rather than consumer spending. That mix of end uses gives producers some protection from swings in car sales. Our model credits cable and construction demand with roughly 1.2% of annual growth, with wire and cable the fastest application.

New metallocene and pellet grades widen use in processing

ExxonMobil used the Global Polymer Summit in Cleveland in January 2026 to promote wider markets for its Vistalon EPDM, and Dow and ARLANXEO continue to push metallocene grades that extrude faster and need less energy to process. Friable and pelletized forms open EPDM to continuous mixing and polymer modification of polypropylene compounds used in car bumpers and interiors. Producers also gain because metallocene lines make narrower molecular weight grades that reduce scrap at extrusion plants, a saving that seal makers pass through in contract talks. We put the contribution of new grades at close to 0.8 points of yearly market growth, mostly in the metallocene segment.

Opportunities

Import substitution in China

Domestic consumption still exceeds output by over 100,000 tonnes a year, and the anti-dumping review keeps US supply out. Domestic producers such as Jilin Petrochemical, Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Elastomers and Shandong Dawn Polymer can capture this gap as new plants start.

Lower-cost Gulf supply for Europe and India

Saudi production marketed by ARLANXEO under the Keltan KSA name and by SABIC's Jubail joint venture gives buyers in India, Turkey and Europe a nearby, feedstock-advantaged source, opening room for supply contracts as older European lines age.

Asia Pacific consumes nearly half of all EPDM and grows fastest through 2035

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) held a 46.80% share in 2025, about USD 2,274.48 Million, and we forecast USD 3,758.16 Million in 2035, the fastest regional CAGR at 5.15%. In APAC, China produced 326,300 tonnes of EPDM in 2025 and is heading for about 485,000 tonnes a year of capacity in 2026, while Kumho Polychem's 310,000 tonne capacity in Korea makes it one of the largest single suppliers. Japan adds Mitsui Chemicals and JSR.

Europe

In 2025, Europe accounted for 22.10% of total value, around USD 1,074.06 Million, and should reach USD 1,471.72 Million by 2035 at a 3.20% CAGR. Europe hosts ARLANXEO's Keltan plant at Geleen in the Netherlands, ExxonMobil's Vistalon production in France and Versalis' Dutral plant at Ferrara in Italy. Vehicle production in Europe fell 0.8% to 17.2 million in 2025, which limits growth in seals and hoses.

North America

North America represented 19.40% of 2025 spending, about USD 942.84 Million, rising to USD 1,304.49 Million in 2035 at a 3.30% CAGR. North America has large producers, including Dow on the Gulf Coast, ExxonMobil and Lion Elastomers in Geismar, Louisiana, but Chinese duties above 200% limit exports. Roofing membranes and automotive seals are the main local outlets.

Latin America

Latin America took a 5.30% share in 2025, roughly USD 257.58 Million, and we forecast USD 400.01 Million in 2035 at a 4.50% CAGR. ARLANXEO's Triunfo site in Brazil gives Latin America local synthetic rubber production, and vehicle assembly in Brazil and Mexico drives seal demand.

Middle East

The Middle East held a 4.20% share in 2025, about USD 204.12 Million, rising to USD 334.08 Million by 2035 at a 5.05% CAGR. In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia is a major exporter through Petro Rabigh and the SABIC-ExxonMobil Jubail venture, and it supplied 40% of China's EPDM imports in 2024; local demand grows with construction and cable projects.

Africa

In 2025, Africa accounted for 2.20% of total value, around USD 106.92 Million, and we project USD 172.51 Million in 2035 at a 4.90% CAGR. Demand in Africa centers on vehicle assembly and component plants in South Africa and Morocco and on cable for power grid expansion.

A handful of global producers hold most EPDM Rubber market capacity as Chinese entrants scale up

The EPDM Rubber market is concentrated. Western and Korean producers hold most capacity outside China, while Chinese state-owned and private firms are expanding quickly behind tariff protection. Competition turns on catalyst technology, grade range for automotive customers, feedstock cost and access to protected markets.

Global technology leaders

ARLANXEO, owned by Saudi Aramco, sells Keltan EPDM from Geleen in the Netherlands, Changzhou in China and other sites, and now markets Petro Rabigh output as Keltan KSA. Dow makes Nordel IP metallocene EPDM on the US Gulf Coast and is known for high-speed extrusion grades. ExxonMobil sells Vistalon from plants in the US and France and promoted new markets for the line in January 2026.

Asian producers

Kumho Polychem of Korea runs about 310,000 tonnes a year after its 2025 expansion and pays the lowest Chinese duty rate among Korean suppliers at 12.5%. Lotte Versalis Elastomers makes EPDM and SSBR at Yeosu. Mitsui Chemicals sells Mitsui EPT and partners Sinopec in Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Elastomers, and JSR, now part of ENEOS Materials, supplies Japanese automotive customers.

Chinese challengers

PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical is China's largest domestic producer and added 40,000 tonnes in 2025. Shandong Dawn Polymer is growing through the Ningbo SK purchase and an ETIC licence, and Lihuayi and Guoneng Yulin Chemical are building new plants for 2027 and 2028.

Specialists and regional suppliers

Versalis, part of Eni, sells Dutral EPDM from Ferrara. Lion Elastomers in Louisiana makes Royalene solid EPDM and Trilene liquid EPDM. SABIC, through its Jubail elastomers joint venture with ExxonMobil, and Petro Rabigh supply Gulf output to Asia and Europe.

How share will shift

We expect Chinese producers to gain share in general-purpose grades as plants from Lihuayi, Guoneng Yulin and Shandong Dawn start up, while ARLANXEO, Dow and ExxonMobil defend specialty automotive and cable grades where qualification cycles run for years and customers rarely switch suppliers mid-program.
