Heavier electric vehicles and lighter spring materials lift coil spring value above vehicle output growth

The automotive coil springs market generated USD 5.84 Billion in 2025 and is projected at USD 6.05 Billion in 2026 and USD 8.33 Billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 3.62% from 2025 to 2035. Growth outpaces vehicle production because battery weight demands stronger springs while carmakers pay more for grams saved.

This study covers helical compression springs used in the primary suspension of passenger cars, SUVs, pickups and light commercial vehicles, supplied to carmakers and sold in the aftermarket as replacement and lowering or lift springs. It includes steel and composite glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) coil springs. Leaf springs, air springs, stabilizer bars, torsion bars, valve springs, and the shock absorbers and strut modules into which springs are assembled are excluded, as are springs for heavy trucks, buses and motorcycles.

Most light vehicles carry four coil springs, so unit demand follows the 96.4 million vehicles OICA counted in 2025. Value grows faster for three reasons. Battery electric vehicles weigh more and need springs made from higher-strength wire, often above 2,000 MPa tensile strength. SUVs and pickups, which use larger springs, keep gaining share. And composite GFRP springs, which can cut spring mass sharply, are moving from niche European models toward broader use.

Glass fiber reinforced polymer springs are the fastest-growing material segment at a 12.46% CAGR, and battery electric vehicles are the fastest propulsion segment at 8.72%. Africa grows fastest by region at 4.80% a year, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 48.30% of 2025 revenue.

Margins in the automotive coil springs market remain thin: NHK Spring forecast an operating margin of just 1.3% for its suspension springs segment in the year to March 2026, and Sogefi's suspension revenue slipped in early 2026, underlining the pressure on steel spring makers.

By spring design: side-load and progressive springs gain on ride and packaging demands

Linear-rate springs, the simplest and cheapest design, grow at 2.94% and remain standard on rear axles of compact cars. Progressive-rate springs grow at 4.27% because they handle the wide load range of EVs and crossovers, soft when lightly loaded and firmer as weight rises. Side-load springs, wound with a curved axis to cancel side forces in MacPherson struts, grow fastest in this dimension at 4.68% as carmakers chase lower strut friction and better ride. Miniblock and barrel springs grow at 3.35%, supported by compact rear suspensions that free space for batteries and cargo floors.

By material: GFRP is the breakout material, ultra-high-strength steel the volume upgrade

High-tensile steel springs grow at 3.28% and still make up the large majority of volume. Ultra-high-strength steel grades above about 2,000 MPa grow at 5.14% because they allow thinner wire and fewer coils at the same load, saving weight without a change of process. Glass fiber reinforced polymer springs grow at 12.46% from a small base; Mubea built a USD 57.7 million plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico for polymer-reinforced fiberglass springs, and Sogefi has supplied composite springs to Audi models in Europe.

By vehicle type: SUVs and pickups lead

Passenger car springs grow at 3.41%, close to the market average. SUVs and pickups grow at 4.36% because they keep gaining share in China, India, the United States and Europe and use larger, heavier springs. Light commercial vehicles grow at 3.72% as electric vans need higher spring rates to carry both battery and payload.

By propulsion: battery electric springs grow ten times faster than ICE

Springs for internal combustion vehicles grow at just 0.86% as the ICE share of new car sales falls. Hybrid vehicles grow at 6.94%, and battery electric vehicles at 8.72%, because each EV carries a battery of several hundred kilograms and needs stronger, higher-value springs. The IEA reports that electric cars were about a quarter of new car sales in 2025.

By sales channel: aftermarket edges ahead of OEM

OEM supply grows at 3.44%. The aftermarket grows at 4.11%, supported by an aging vehicle fleet in North America and Europe, by demand for lowering and lift springs, and by broad catalog programs from brands such as Lesjofors, which offers more than 7,000 spring part numbers.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Production capacity follows vehicle output to India

In May 2025, NHK Spring announced a new plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, to make coil springs and stabilizer bars, its third facility in India, with production starting in 2027. India produced 6.49 million vehicles in 2025 and posted record fiscal 2025-26 domestic sales of more than 4.6 million passenger vehicles. Sogefi's suspension revenue in India grew 16.4% at constant exchange rates in the first half of 2026, while its China suspension revenue fell 11.6%, showing how growth is shifting within Asia.

Spring makers reshape portfolios to protect margins

In July 2026, Sogefi agreed to sell its Precision Springs business, with three plants in France, the Netherlands and the UK and 2025 turnover of EUR 28.6 million, to Associated Metal Forming Technologies, controlled by One Equity Partners, at a net enterprise value of EUR 21 million. The deal lets Sogefi focus on automotive suspension coil springs and stabilizer bars. NHK Spring, for its part, forecast only a 1.3% operating margin for its suspension springs segment in the year to March 2026, putting pressure on spring makers to raise prices or exit low-return lines.

Lightweight materials move toward volume use

Carmakers are trading cost for mass in the suspension because each kilogram of unsprung weight saved helps ride, handling and EV range. Ultra-high-strength spring wire from suppliers such as Suzuki Garphyttan, hollow springs and GFRP composite springs from Mubea and Sogefi are all part of this trend. Radial Insights expects GFRP springs to move from luxury estates and sedans into premium EVs by the early 2030s.

Europe stalls as Asia carries volume growth

OICA data published in April 2026 show Asia Pacific vehicle output rose 7.6% to about 59.2 million units in 2025, while Europe fell 0.8% to 17.2 million. Sogefi cited an S&P Global forecast of a 1.7% drop in European car production for 2026 in its July 2026 half-year release. Coil spring makers with European-heavy footprints, where Europe is 67% of Sogefi's suspension sales, face slower volume than those based in Asia.

Restraints and Challenges

Thin margins and price pressure

Steel coil springs are a mature, high-volume part with limited differentiation, and carmakers push for annual price reductions. NHK Spring's suspension springs segment was forecast at JPY 163.4 billion in sales but only JPY 2.1 billion in operating profit for the year to March 2026 (NHK Spring investor briefing, November 2025). Such margins leave little room to fund new materials and automation.

Steel and energy cost swings

Spring wire is made from silicon-chromium and similar alloy steels, and hot coiling, heat treatment and shot peening are energy intensive. Swings in steel, alloy and energy prices hit spring makers before contract price adjustments catch up, especially in Europe, where energy costs remain high.

Weak European production and delayed launches

Sogefi reported that first-half 2026 suspension revenue fell 2.0% at constant exchange rates to EUR 259.3 million, with second-quarter revenue down 2.8%, and noted delays in launching new supply contracts in China (Sogefi half-year release, July 2026). Lower volumes in Europe and slow program ramps in China weigh on capacity utilization.

Competition from air suspension and composites

Air springs are spreading on premium SUVs and EVs, replacing steel coil springs on some trims, and composite springs require new tooling and testing. Traditional steel spring makers that do not invest in these technologies risk losing content per vehicle at the top of the market, which Radial Insights estimates trims about 0.3 points from steel spring growth each year.

Growth Drivers

Heavier electric and hybrid vehicles need stronger springs

The IEA counted more than 20 million electric cars sold in 2025, up 20%, and expects about 23 million in 2026, close to 30% of all car sales. China produced 16.63 million new energy vehicles in 2025, up 29%, according to OICA. A typical battery pack adds several hundred kilograms, so springs need higher rates and stronger wire, often ultra-high-strength steel above 2,000 MPa or composite designs. That raises value per spring set even when unit counts are flat. Radial Insights estimates that the EV and hybrid weight effect adds about +1.4% to the coil springs market's annual growth through 2035, the largest single contribution.

Rising vehicle output in Asia and the shift to SUVs

World vehicle production grew 3.9% to 96.4 million units in 2025, with Asia Pacific above 61% of output and China alone at 34.53 million vehicles. SUVs and pickups keep gaining share in China, India and North America, and they use larger and heavier springs than compact cars. NHK Spring's new Aurangabad plant, due in 2027, and Sogefi's 16.4% suspension growth in India in the first half of 2026 show suppliers following that demand. Volume and SUV mix together contribute roughly 1.2 points of the 3.62% CAGR in our model.

Lightweighting targets and new materials

Carmakers face fleet CO2 targets in Europe and fuel economy rules in the United States, China and India, and EV makers chase every kilometer of range. Springs are an easy place to save mass: ultra-high-strength steel allows thinner wire and fewer coils, and GFRP springs can be much lighter than steel equivalents. Mubea's investment in a USD 57.7 million fiberglass spring plant in Mexico and its USD 24.3 million coil spring expansion in Boone County, Kentucky, announced in 2024, show supplier commitment. Radial Insights credits lightweighting with lifting yearly growth by about 0.7 percentage points through 2035, mostly through higher prices per spring.

Opportunities

Composite springs for premium EV platforms

Premium EV platforms in Europe, China and North America are natural targets for GFRP coil springs, where weight savings directly extend range. Suppliers that can bring composite spring costs closer to steel, and prove durability over 15 years, can win large platform awards.

EV-specific aftermarket and performance springs

As the first large wave of EVs ages, owners will need replacement springs rated for heavier curb weights. Aftermarket brands such as Lesjofors and Eibach can build EV-specific catalogs, as well as lowering springs designed for heavy battery cars.

Asia Pacific (APAC) supplies almost half of coil spring revenue and nearly all of its volume growth

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 48.30% of the automotive coil springs market in 2025, about USD 2.82 Billion, and is forecast to reach USD 4.27 Billion by 2035 at a 4.24% CAGR. Asia Pacific produced about 59.2 million vehicles in 2025, up 7.6%, led by China at 34.53 million and India at 6.49 million. Japan's NHK Spring, Chuo Spring and Mitsubishi Steel and Korea's Daewon Kang Up are based in the region, and NHK is adding a third Indian plant from 2027.

North America

North America represented 19.60% of 2025 revenue, about USD 1.14 Billion, and is expected to reach USD 1.52 Billion by 2035 at a 2.90% CAGR. Pickups and large SUVs dominate North America's light vehicle mix and use larger springs, while a large, aging fleet sustains aftermarket demand. Mubea's Kentucky coil spring expansion and its fiberglass spring plant in Mexico anchor regional supply.

Europe

Europe held 21.90% of the market in 2025, worth about USD 1.28 Billion, and is forecast at USD 1.65 Billion by 2035, a 2.60% CAGR, the slowest of any region. European vehicle output fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025, and Europe is 67% of Sogefi's suspension sales. Europe still leads in composite springs and in premium side-load and progressive designs.

Latin America

Latin America accounted for 4.80% of 2025 revenue, about USD 280.32 Million, rising to USD 403.13 Million by 2035 at a 3.70% CAGR. Brazil and Argentina host local spring production for regional carmakers, and Mexico-based Rassini is a major Latin America suspension supplier, though Sogefi reported a 6.2% fall in South American suspension revenue in the first half of 2026.

Middle East

The Middle East held 3.10% of 2025 revenue, about USD 181.04 Million, and is forecast to reach USD 265.42 Million by 2035 at a 3.90% CAGR. Turkey's vehicle production base and replacement demand from the large SUV fleet in the Gulf states account for most Middle East spring sales.

Africa

Africa represented 2.30% of the market in 2025, about USD 134.32 Million, and is set to reach USD 214.66 Million by 2035, the fastest regional CAGR at 4.80%. African new vehicle sales rose 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025, and poor road conditions in markets such as Nigeria and Kenya shorten spring life and raise replacement demand.

Japanese, German and Italian spring groups lead OEM supply while specialist brands own the aftermarket

The automotive coil springs market is concentrated at the OEM level, where a handful of global spring groups supply carmakers from plants close to vehicle assembly. The aftermarket is more fragmented, with catalog specialists and suspension brands competing on coverage and availability. Wire suppliers sit upstream and increasingly shape spring performance through steel grades.

Global OEM spring groups

NHK Spring of Japan is one of the largest suspension spring makers, with a segment forecast at JPY 163.4 billion for the year to March 2026 and a new Indian plant due in 2027. Mubea of Germany is known for lightweight springs, including fiberglass composite springs made in Mexico and coil springs made in Kentucky. Sogefi of Italy runs 18 suspension plants in 8 countries and generated EUR 539.1 million in suspension revenue in 2025, and it has supplied composite springs to Audi.

Regional OEM suppliers

Chuo Spring and Mitsubishi Steel Mfg. supply Japanese carmakers in Japan and abroad. Daewon Kang Up is a key spring supplier to Korean carmakers. Rassini, based in Mexico, is a major North American and Latin American suspension supplier best known for leaf springs and also active in coil springs.

Aftermarket and performance brands

Lesjofors, part of Beijer Alma, sells more than 7,000 spring part numbers and keeps adding coverage for the North American aftermarket. Eibach is a leading performance brand for lowering and lift springs. Tenneco markets coil springs under its Monroe and MOOG brands alongside shock absorbers and struts.

Spring wire suppliers

Suzuki Garphyttan is a leading supplier of high-strength spring wire, whose steel grades enable thinner, lighter coil springs. Wire quality has become a competitive factor because ultra-high-strength springs above 2,000 MPa need very clean steel to avoid fatigue failures.
