Replacement demand and EV fitment keep brake pads on a 4.62% annual growth path through 2035

Global spending on automotive brake pads reached USD 12.84 Billion in 2025, rises to USD 13.43 Billion in 2026 and is projected at USD 20.17 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 4.62%. That trajectory rests on a vehicle parc that keeps getting older and on friction rules that force reformulation in Europe and the United States.

Radial Insights defines the automotive brake pads market as the value of friction pads, and the drum brake linings that serve the same wear function, sold for passenger cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles and two-wheelers through original equipment and replacement channels. We count the pad assembly, including backing plate, shims and wear sensors supplied in the box. Calipers, rotors, drums, brake fluid and labor charged at the workshop sit outside the scope, as do rail, aircraft and industrial friction products.

Volume is anchored in two places. China produced a record 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, according to CAAM data reported in January 2026, and every one of those vehicles leaves the line with four to six friction sets. In the United States, the Auto Care Association puts the average light vehicle age at a record 12.9 years, which pushes more cars into their second and third pad replacement cycle each year.

Battery electric fitment is the fastest growing segment at 9.12% a year, because EV production rises faster than any other drivetrain and each EV still needs a corrosion resistant, low noise pad even though regenerative braking stretches wear intervals. Ceramic formulations follow at 6.18% a year as copper limits and Euro 7 brake particle limits favor low dust chemistries.

Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest and the fastest growing region, holding 46.35% of 2025 value and expanding at 5.33% a year as China, India and ASEAN add production capacity and replacement demand from a younger but much larger parc.

Ceramic pads gain the most as low dust and copper free compliance becomes a baseline

Ceramic formulations grow at 6.18% a year, well above semi-metallic at 3.95% and low-metallic at 3.62%. North American buyers have favored ceramic pads for low noise and clean wheels for a decade, and the 0.5% copper ceiling that took effect in Washington on January 1, 2025 pushed more suppliers to re-engineer ceramic and NAO mixes rather than reformulate legacy metallic grades. In Europe, low-metallic pads still dominate on performance-oriented vehicles, but Euro 7 particle limits reward chemistries that shed less mass. NAO pads, at 4.31% a year, benefit from EIT Urban Mobility test data showing roughly 62% lower PM10 emissions versus low-steel pads.

Two-wheelers and light commercial vehicles outpace passenger cars

Two-wheeler pads grow at 5.34% a year because disc brake adoption on scooters and commuter motorcycles in India and Southeast Asia is still climbing from a low base, and anti-lock braking mandates on larger bikes add a second disc on many models. Light commercial vehicles grow at 4.86% a year on the back of parcel delivery fleets that run high stop-start duty cycles. Passenger cars, at 4.48%, remain the volume base. Heavy commercial vehicles grow at 4.12% as air disc brakes replace drums in North America and Europe.

Battery electric fitment grows three times faster than combustion vehicles

Battery electric vehicle pads rise at 9.12% a year and hybrid pads at 6.85%, while internal combustion engine pads grow at only 2.96%. The gap reflects production mix rather than wear rates: EVs recover much of their braking energy through the motor, which lengthens pad life, but the pads that are fitted must resist corrosion from infrequent use and carry noise damping shims for quiet cabins. ACEA reported a 17.4% battery electric share of EU new car registrations in 2025, up from 13.6% in 2024.

Aftermarket demand outpaces original equipment supply

The aftermarket grows at 5.07% a year versus 3.88% for OEM fitment. A U.S. light vehicle fleet heading past 301 million units by 2029 and averaging 12.9 years of age generates steady replacement jobs, and online parts sales widen access to premium ceramic lines. OEM growth tracks vehicle production, which CAAM expects to edge up only about 1% in China during 2026.

Air disc brake pads for trucks grow fastest by brake system

Air disc brake pads for commercial vehicles rise at 5.26% a year, disc pads for light vehicles at 4.94% and drum brake linings at 2.41%. Fleets switch to air disc systems for shorter stopping distances and faster service, while drum linings hold mainly on rear axles of entry-level cars and older trucks.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Copper free portfolios are becoming the default across major brands

In June 2026, ahead of Automechanika Frankfurt, Brembo said its entire pad offering is now copper free and extended its Greenance low emission line. Washington's Better Brakes law set a below 0.5% copper limit from January 2025, and the three-leaf LeafMark Level N symbol now signals full compliance on pad boxes sold across North America.

Euro 7 turns brake particle emissions into a homologation item

Euro 7 caps brake particulate matter at 3 to 7 mg/km for passenger cars and 5 to 11 mg/km for light commercial vehicles. New vehicle types must comply from November 2026 and all new vehicles on sale by November 2027. S&P Global Mobility expects the requirement to flow into the independent aftermarket through ECE R90 approvals, which raises test costs for smaller pad makers.

Consolidation is reshaping the North American and Indian supply base

Friction One bought the Raybestos brand in June 2026 after Raybestos' former parent, First Brands Group, filed for Chapter 11 in September 2025 and announced the wind down of Brake Parts Inc. in January 2026. In India, Rane (Madras) completed its Rs 370 crore purchase of the Hindustan Composites friction business in August 2026.

Product line extensions target EVs, luxury imports and severe duty trucks

In June 2026, Akebono added six pad part numbers covering more than 8.6 million vehicles in operation, including BMW i4 and iX models and Hummer EV trucks. ZF Aftermarket launched TRW DTEC low dust ceramic pads in India in February 2026, a sign that premium chemistries are moving into price sensitive markets.

Restraints and Challenges

Regenerative braking stretches replacement intervals

Battery electric vehicles can run well beyond the typical pad replacement interval of a combustion car because the motor handles most deceleration. As EV share rises, from 17.4% of EU registrations in 2025 for instance, unit replacement demand per vehicle falls even as the parc grows. TMD Friction has said it expects replacement logic to shift from wear limits to time-based intervals.

Compliance testing raises the cost of staying in the market

Under Washington's Better Brakes law, manufacturers must certify each formulation through accredited laboratories and show proof on pads and packaging. Euro 7 adds dynamometer particle measurement; TMD Friction alone spent EUR 1.5 million on a new test bench in November 2024. Smaller regional brands may exit or sell, as the Raybestos and Hindustan Composites transactions show.

Raw material and energy costs squeeze margins

Friction formulations combine steel fiber, graphite, aramid pulp, resins and specialty minerals, and price swings in each feed through to pad costs with a lag. Brembo reported 2025 revenue of EUR 3,704 million against EUR 3,841 million in 2024, with weak premium vehicle demand weighing on volumes, a reminder that pricing power is limited when vehicle output stalls.

Counterfeit and non-compliant imports undercut quality brands

Low-cost imports that do not carry valid LeafMark or ECE R90 marks still reach online marketplaces in several regions. These products compete on price with certified pads and expose regulators to enforcement gaps, which slows the shift toward premium ceramic and low emission lines.

Growth Drivers

An aging vehicle parc keeps replacement demand rising every year

The Auto Care Association reported in June 2026 that the average U.S. light vehicle is now 12.9 years old, a record, and projected the parc to exceed 301 million units by 2029, nearly 10 million more than in 2025. The same report forecasts 5.4% growth in total U.S. aftermarket spending in 2026 to USD 599.7 billion. Older vehicles cover more cumulative miles and need two or three pad changes over their remaining life, and independent repair shops increasingly sell premium ceramic sets at higher ticket prices. Distributors such as Friction One, which reports more than 15,000 SKUs covering over 99% of passenger and commercial applications, are expanding coverage to capture this demand. We estimate the aging parc adds about +1.2% to annual growth in the automotive brake pads market across the forecast period, the single largest contribution of any driver.

Vehicle production growth in Asia lifts original equipment volume

China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025 and exported more than 7 million, according to CAAM, while NEV production passed 16 million units. Each new vehicle carries four to six friction sets, and Chinese automakers increasingly source pads from domestic suppliers that are scaling up for export platforms. India adds momentum: Rane (Madras), whose friction business already generated over Rs 700 crore in revenue, bought Hindustan Composites' plants in Paithan and Bhandara to widen its OE and aftermarket footprint. Friction One's Juarez plant in Mexico targets 16 million pad sets a year by 2026, up from 10 million in 2025, to serve North American OE and replacement buyers. Rising production in Asia Pacific and Mexico contributes roughly 0.9 percentage points to the yearly growth rate.

Emission and material rules raise the value of each pad set

Euro 7 brake particle limits of 3 to 7 mg/km for passenger cars apply to new types from November 2026, and EIT Urban Mobility test results show NAO pads cutting PM10 by about 62% against low-steel pads. Brembo's Greentell disc and pad system, presented at Auto Shanghai in April 2025, claims close to 90% lower braking emissions. Compliant formulations use more expensive binders, fibers and shims, and suppliers recover development costs through higher prices on OE and premium aftermarket lines. In the United States, the January 2025 copper threshold in Washington effectively set a national standard because brands do not maintain separate inventories by state. Regulation-driven mix upgrades account for around 0.7 points of the market's annual expansion.

Opportunities

EV-specific pad ranges with corrosion protection and noise damping

Brembo's EV KIT and Comline's EVLine show suppliers building dedicated ranges for electrified vehicles. With battery electric fitment growing at 9.12% a year, brands that pair low drag pad designs with coated backing plates and quiet shims can win both OE nominations and higher-margin replacement sales.

Commercial vehicle air disc pads in North America

Momentum USA's New World Friction acquired Toronto-based Max Power Friction to offer a full Class 1 to Class 8 program, including air disc pads. As fleets convert from drums, air disc pad demand grows at 5.26% a year, an opening for suppliers with severe duty formulations and fleet service networks.

Asia Pacific leads on both scale and pace while mature regions grow on replacement

The regional picture in the automotive brake pads market follows vehicle production and parc age. Asia Pacific (APAC) adds the most value, while North America and Europe grow slower but carry higher prices per pad set.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for 46.35% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 5.95 Billion, and is projected to reach USD 10.00 Billion by 2035 at a 5.33% CAGR. China's record 34.53 million vehicle output in 2025 underpins OE volume across the region. India supports replacement growth through two-wheeler disc brake adoption, and Rane (Madras)' August 2026 acquisition of Hindustan Composites' friction business shows domestic suppliers are consolidating to serve it.

North America

North America holds 21.40% of the 2025 total, equal to USD 2.75 Billion, and grows at 3.57% a year to USD 3.90 Billion in 2035. The U.S. fleet averages 12.9 years and is heading past 301 million light vehicles by 2029, which keeps North American replacement demand steady. Friction One's Juarez plant, targeting 16 million pad sets a year, is becoming a key supply node for the continent.

Europe

Europe represents 20.15% of 2025 sales, or USD 2.59 Billion, rising to USD 3.79 Billion by 2035 at 3.90% a year. EU new car registrations rose 1.8% in 2025 to about 10.8 million, with battery electric models at 17.4%. European pad makers face the first Euro 7 brake particle limits from November 2026, which favor low emission formulations and raise the average selling price.

Latin America

Latin America makes up 6.30% of 2025 value, about USD 0.81 Billion, and should reach USD 1.28 Billion by 2035 at 4.66% a year. Brazil and Mexico anchor Latin American demand, and Frasle Mobility, one of the region's leading friction suppliers, opened its Movetech USA unit in Detroit in October 2026 to extend its reach north.

Middle East

The Middle East holds 3.45% of the 2025 market, valued at USD 0.44 Billion, and grows at 4.80% a year to USD 0.71 Billion in 2035. High ambient temperatures and heavy SUV use shorten pad life across the Middle East, and imported premium brands dominate Gulf replacement channels.

Africa

Africa accounts for 2.35% of 2025 demand, or USD 0.30 Billion, and climbs to USD 0.49 Billion by 2035 at 5.05% a year. An African parc dominated by used imports drives replacement-led sales, with South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya as the largest pad markets.

Global brake system majors and specialist friction houses split the market, with consolidation accelerating

Competition in automotive brake pads runs on three axes: OE nominations with automakers, breadth of aftermarket coverage, and the ability to certify formulations against copper, particle and noise standards. Scale matters because every new formulation needs dynamometer and road testing, and because distributors prefer brands that cover nearly every vehicle in operation.

Integrated brake system suppliers

Brembo leads in performance and premium vehicles and reported 2025 revenue of EUR 3,704 million; its Greentell system and copper free pad range position it for Euro 7. ZF, through its TRW aftermarket brand, supplies OE and replacement pads worldwide and is pushing DTEC ceramic pads into India. Continental, now operating its brake business as part of AUMOVIO, sells ATE pads with strong positions in German OE programs. Akebono Brake Industry, known for its ceramic pads in North America, continues to widen EURO and ProACT coverage for luxury and EV models.

Specialist friction material makers

TMD Friction, owner of the Textar and Mintex brands, says it has developed more than 50,000 formulations and has taken part in the UN Particle Measurement Programme since 2016. Nisshinbo Brake supplies friction materials to Japanese and global automakers. Frasle Mobility, part of Randon, is a leading Latin American friction supplier and opened Movetech USA in Detroit in 2026. Rane (Madras) has become a larger Indian player after absorbing Hindustan Composites.

Aftermarket-focused brands and private label producers

Friction One, with plants in Mexico and China and more than 15,000 SKUs, gained the century-old Raybestos brand in 2026. Momentum USA, through New World Friction and Max Power Friction, covers Class 1 to Class 8 vehicles. Power Stop is known for performance pad and rotor kits sold through retail chains. Bosch continues to market QuietCast and Blue pads through its aftermarket division.

How the field is shifting

The First Brands bankruptcy removed a major supplier from North American shelves and redistributed share toward Friction One, Brembo and Akebono. Over the forecast period, we expect players that combine low emission chemistry, EV-specific ranges and full coverage catalogs to gain share, while smaller regional producers face the cost of Euro 7 and copper compliance.

Primary Interview Insights

Material

How fast are customers moving from metallic to ceramic pads?

North American distributors told us ceramic lines now make up the bulk of their passenger car pad sales, and the copper rule removed the last reasons to stock older semi-metallic grades for most cars. European buyers said low-metallic pads still dominate on German brands but expect Euro 7 to change that within a few model cycles.

Propulsion

Do EVs reduce pad demand?

Fleet managers running EVs reported pads lasting noticeably longer than on equivalent combustion vehicles, with corrosion rather than wear often triggering replacement. Suppliers said this lowers unit volume per car but raises value per set because EV pads carry coatings and extra shims.

Regulation

What does Euro 7 compliance cost a pad supplier?

Friction engineers said each new formulation now needs particle testing on dedicated dynamometers, adding months to development. Several smaller producers said they are considering licensing formulations or selling to larger groups rather than investing in test benches.

Channel

How has the First Brands bankruptcy affected supply?

U.S. parts distributors described temporary gaps on Raybestos lines in early 2026 and said they shifted orders to other brands. Most expect supply to normalize once Friction One restarts Raybestos production in late 2026.

Commercial vehicles

Are fleets switching to air disc brakes?

Truck fleet buyers told us new tractor specifications in North America now default to air disc brakes on steer and drive axles. They value shorter stopping distances and faster pad changes over the higher component price.
